i'm sorry to say this but i think the 2019 renault "growing pains" have largely been exaggerated :(

yes he made a few blunders (australia grassgate, azjerbaijan reversegate) but other than that, he was regularly outperforming nico hulkenberg right from the off, in *both* quali and race (he won the 2019 h2h with a good margin)

the jump we saw from 19 to 20 was largely the car itself improving alongside the developmental curve that dan inevitably helped with his input. the fall of ferrari in 20 only helped exaggerate that

this performance gap hasn't really happened before in his career; he's bested seb, matched max, bested nico and outright demolished a returning esteban

there's good news in the fact that dan's quali gap at medium-slow speed corner circuits with heavy breaking is getting somewhat smaller, and as he's almost always been able to match lando at high-medium speed corner circuits that's the most important thing.

he's happy with how he and the team are working together as he said in an interview with the race:

"I honestly can’t ask for more from what they’re trying to do to help me."

i hope dan can continue his progress in the car, because we all want to see him succeed, and the fact that this is an unprecedented blip in his career largely points to the idea that it won't last!

What’s the sweetest or most romantic thing anyone’s done for you? ❤️ One year for Christmas my boyfriend got me this little book (like a art book with blank pages) which he’d written and drawn pictures of things he’d do for me or we’d do together. It was like vouchers. It was so cute and I literally cried. I never actually used any of them before we broke up (it was a pretty devastating break up) but I still have it and it’s the best gift I’ve ever received.

thank you so much for sharing, anon! love the voucher idea and i'm sorry to hear about the break up, hope you're doing well by now! 💗 most romantic thing is kinda hard but i think it was my best-friend-turned-almost-boyfriend "waiting" for me to get better. i was struggling with depression at the time and the last thing on my mind was a relationship, so he just spent a lot of time with me and looked after me like a real champ. other than that, the sweetest thing(s) probably come from my mom, who has bought me so so so much and made it possible for me to see the most beautiful places in the world.
