Also in a weird way, not literally of course, a strong case for inframaterialism can be made. Mainly through the idea of hyperstition, ie self fulfilling prophecies on a group/social level. Basically if no one believe in communism, communism will not be built, because no one acts. If many people believe in communism, communism *might* be built, because people may act on the belief and bring communism about. And of course success is not guaranteed, which the authors explicitly stated in game with the ultimate question in this quest.

This is pretty basic but few people talk about this. I guess you really have to be hyper invested in this quest to get inframaterialism!

in all honesty if steban and ulixes were real I would be furiously beefing with them on twitter, it would be an absolute bloodbath, but if I see people say they as characters aren’t meant to be sincere about their beliefs, or that steban isn’t working class, or that they don’t try to reach out to the union (they literally gave call me mañana the password, he just prefers not to join bc his whole deal is chilling out and doing what he wants) or that they aren’t on good terms with cindy (they literally are lol, they are much nicer to her than MLs—I mean nilsenist-mazovians—usually are to anarchists) I’ll get mad

Very fun to think through. So the jacket (not quite Nilsen, but the idea of revolutionary innovation in technology) can be a equivalent to the necktie, but instead of the more…intrusive thought™️ necktie, what kind of voice would the jacket embody?

I think canonically, Mazov is the Logic and Rhetorics Theory guy, while Nilsen is the unhinged romantic, with actual war crimes under his belt. Depending on what kind of role Harry can become, which ranges based on the player’s behavior, I think Kim’s roles would somewhat subtlety change, too. Nilsen would be perceived by Kim to be a Chaos Dragon archetype, despite the inframaterialism making some kind of sense.

Kim’s alignment to the idea of order would try to repress what Nilsen represents, so that checks out. This is why I am interested in exploring post-canon kimharry, where Kim may have an ego death/midlife crisis, due to seeing the phasmid, and seeing the possibility that *another world is possible*

if Kim started putting points into his dismally low conceptualization skill it would start telling him in a Katlan accent to build sausage grinders and throw his Moralintern bosses into them. and that’s why he doesn’t do it. ever. but—despite being so repressed, it still convinced him to wear the revolutionary airman cosplay

I agree to all of this. I think the lens of autistic Kim is so valid in this context: imagine all the masking and attempt to connect and coping mechanisms to deal with Living just all breaks down. Imagine being a workaholic only to go to the verge of suicide the hour you are alone and can decompress. Interpersonally he will be incredibly cold, by the book, and defensive, which is still remarkably different from Harry. Not a very cool and spectacular version of breaking down.

I actually think Punk Kim would be a better and more more liberated version of himself.

The only instance (as far as I can tell) where you manage to squeeze a political opinion out of Kim is if you choose the tankie dialogue options when Joyce is giving you your reality lowdown and he announces that his parents were brutally killed during the revolution but like. Even then there’s not really a stated opinion there, it’s more he’s just sharing a relevant anecdote or smth. And obviously he does feel a certain way about it, but he states that his parents were “ripped apart” in such a dry and bitter tone…it’s not even a refutation of the communard revolution or mazov or anything, it’s just the bone dry fact that the revolutionaries harmed him directly, and he didn’t like that at all. It’s the perfect moralist response to this highly emotional and political situation, so perfect that it’s actually a bit insane. Like how does THAT not radicalize you in one direction or the other? But the answer is that Kim IS radicalized, just towards moralism. You wouldn’t think it a possible position to have, but moralism isn’t actually a middle ground between two extremes, it’s a political faction unto itself. If communism represents the left and fascism the right, then moralism is like. Up. Which is definitely the conclusion the game wants you to draw; the Moralintern and the Coalition are all associated with things above: the airships, upward economic mobility, the moral high ground.

So then circling back to Kim and his personal life experiences, it makes sense why moralism would appeal to him. It makes sense that a kid living in the direct aftermath of a failed revolution that claimed the lives of his parents would grow up to be a desperate and resolute preserver of the status quo and nothing more, nothing less, especially if you take his race into account. Like Kim makes SUCH a big point out of the fact that he has no cultural connection to Seol, and he gets kind of irritated if you bring it up again. And obviously this is just a reaction borne from having to deal with a lifetime of racists, but i think he also gets frustrated bc he doesn’t appreciate the reminder that his existence as a Seolite man is ALWAYS going to be politicized.

And then you ALSO must consider the way that all of these elements of Kim’s personal history factor in to who he is, fundamentally speaking. Like his extreme professionalism, his competency, his commitment to the RCM, his sense of command over himself and others…a lot of that is just how he is, but I suspect it also has a lot to do with what it’s like being a member of a uniquely small racial minority in le caillou. I mean I don’t have martinaise’s census data on hand, but Kim being the only Seolite person you meet in a very racially and culturally diverse city feels pertinent.

So I guess this is all to say that while I don’t actively dislike harrykim swap AUs (I understand that they’re mostly an excuse to rough up a beloved character and give him a fun n sexy outfit; a noble pursuit), I do think they’re missing some fundamental aspects of not only Kim’s character, but just the basic racial dynamics of this world that the game has presented us with. If Kim entered his Breakdown Era, he wouldn’t be acting like Harry, primarily bc Harry’s breakdown symptoms are unique to Harry’s personality, but also bc Kim isn’t white!! He couldn’t get away with the shit harry does even if he wanted to.

one of the best bits in the whole game to me was when you can interrupt rené and gaston during their game. and phys instrument will be like YEAHHH THROW THE BALL! DON’T HESITATE! BE A MAN! and so naturally. i went for the check to toss it with my silly little +2 from non-hesitation. and it succeeds and their *boule* goes flying into the fucking ocean and immediately things are Worse! i have to go get them a new ball. they’re both upset with me. despite passing the check harry has failed on an Astronomical Level. and i very immediately realized that unlike any other game i’ve played, in disco elysium, the mechanics meant to help you and guide you will lie and mislead you. that was the moment–before volition and klaasje, before suggestion and dora–where i realized that this whole game was going to be on me. harry’s a detective! and even when you as the player are only dealing with your own thoughts, you have to detect. you have to play liar and lied-to with your own mind. no wonder he went fucking crazy
