Took a little time for myself this morning and lit quite an excess of candles just to have my coffee 🕯🕯🕯 (decaf after my recent hospital stay and figuring out some heart stuff - I’ve not been missing it actually). One of my favourite leisure activities is playing with paint samples and wallpaper swatches and imagining what else I could decorate in our new old house. I spend rather a lot of time pondering and find it very relaxing. ✨ There actual diy part is a lot harder of course, doing everything without help. You might be able to spot that I pulled up the old grey carpet in the dining room - yes! The dining room had carpet 🙈 Currently living with old fake wood floors that have heaps of paint and dried glue on them and no beading around the edges. Way better than carpet though! Have you ever painted laminate floors? Anyhow, I don’t know what the point of this post was. Just saying hi and that the decorating continues. My happy hallway 🤍🌿🤎🌾🖤 Swipe for before >>> afters. I know hallways can be tricky and mine was no different. It’s been through many changes in the short time we’ve lived in our new old house. The front door was originally stained mahogany, and I tried painting it four different @lick colours. 😆 it’s been green, beige, off black and we finally settled on the deepest darkest black. The staircase was also stained mahogany and after trying painting it white I much preferred the subtle difference of a darker beige neutral on the woodwork to contrast the white walls. You’ll see in the photographs a glimpse of my attempt to go off black on the lower walls and front door and even though it looked quite stylish it just wasn’t me. So the end result is a makeover of a makeover 🙈😂 Thank you @lick for patiently and generously sponsoring my adventures in paint. 🎨 I guess I’m treating this house like an artists canvas and feeling my way forward. If you carefully look, you will see… a tiny hint at the story, that will be… THE MAGIC FEATHER 🪶- my next picture book coming out later this year. I’m excited to show you all the work inside the pages. Lots of forest scenes that are painted with gouache and watercolour. It’s very hard to push your style of work when you are contracted for book after book and you are expected to deliver a definitive and recognisable style. Over the last years I’ve been feeling the urge to paint more and spend less time on the computer and so, with this book, I made a concerted effort to do this. It’s resulted in softer, more painterly scenes with less outlined shapes. Images that I’m really proud of. It’s the first day of the year 2022. Time for a fresh start, time to set new intentions. Right!? Of course in reality on this day everything stays the same in the world, and this line we draw in our calendar is arbitrary. A new year starts at the solstice, a new year could start with your birthday, on any significant day. I used to resist acknowledging the new year as a chance for change, preferred looking at life as a long continuing line of different chapters independent on the yearly circle. As I grow older I realise change and growth start with a thought and is always followed by action, powered by each and every one of us. So this day collectively gives us a moment, a tradition, a chance to ponder and reset in small ways. Together these small changes can make for big shifts. I’m hopeful for the world. I feel heavy and light at the same time this year. Calm but mournful. ✨ Here’s a little frog and a light for you...and as I wrote last year, ”I know things are hard right now... ✨Looking back at renovating and decorating in 2021✨ The first year in our new old house in ten pictures. I’ve been playing with pattern, exploring the spaces…all completely diy. It sometimes feels like nothing is moving or changing here and I want to redo areas already, but looking back at these pictures I can see how much love and work I’ve put into our home already.
