Madara definitely doubted Hashirama’s love for him after hashirama was willing to kill him for Konoha. It’s one of those feelings that brings him the most shame and he represses it to the best of his ability but it’s there. subtle but there. Madara is a very prideful person but he also feels a lot and only Hashirama has ever managed to uproot him in such a way.
The way I picture it is that Madara challenging Hashirama to a fight to the death was also his way of getting Hashirama to pay attention to him and focus on him for one last time. But I also think part of him knew they had reached a point of no return. Madara briefly wondering if Hashirama would ever try to spare him, knowing likely not but maybe still hoping slightly, only for Hashirama to stab him and vow to kill anyone who harms Konoha…..
Overall, despite that, Madara still loves Hashirama, and Hashirama still loves Madara. The love was never lost in my opinion, even during their darkest times, but Hashimada to me have this unspoken depth, this unresolved conflict and feelings of inadequacy. It doesn’t overshadow the obsession they consistently feel for each other; I think it just worsens it.

Personal revenge vs community justice is the usual tension in revenge stories where a single character chooses to enact revenge for themselves or the people they love and in the process hurt innocent bystanders but that does not work for "sole survivor" or "genocide survivor" stories. There is no such thing as "eye for an eye" revenge, no proportional punitive justice, when it was a wrong done to a community.
The reason why Sasuke's revenge is so justified is that killing one man to avenge an ethnic cleansing is not proportional in the least. There is no getting your enemies to suffer like the Uchiha have suffered. Revenge in this context is a consolation and a bad one at that, but it's all he has. Sasuke has no community to fall back on anymore, no community to hurt in his pursuit of revenge and that tension is lost. Furthermore Sasuke goes out of his way to spare collateral damage, consistently refuses to kill and spares his friend even though killing him promised him the power to kill itachi. There is no collateral damage to Sasuke's revenge, no destroyed community, and that undermines the central tension of morally grey revenge arcs.
The only collateral damage to Sasuke is himself, how he destroys his life in pursuing revenge, but even that is flimsy. His life has already been destroyed by the genocide because, again, this isn't a personal hurt but a whole lifestyle, culture, and people who were eradicated. He's already had his world blown up before so it's not like he's making an uninformed decision. Sasuke chooses to go to Orochimaru because the hurt is really, truly, incomparable to the wrong done to him. Again, a lack of proportionality. Avenging a genocide trumps personal hurt.
Then we get to the "destroy konoha" bit after the reveal that his people's demise was not the work of one man but the actions of military leaders motivated by the bigoted opinions of the even wider community that actively isolated the Uchiha before they were murdered. Now I'm not such a loser to have a bad faith idea of Sasuke thinking "destroy konoha" meant personally targeting konoha babies considering all his actions, but it means killing the individuals responsible as well as the state, the system that did this. It's revenge, sure, but it is also now very much a pursuit of a higher justice and, yes, restorative community justice. He is working to materially improve the condition of the world by, yes, killing a bunch of people who absolutely deserved it. It is revenge and justice rolled into one. He gets to have his cake and eat it too.
There is only ONE moment in the whole of the series where Sasuke ever lets his hatred get the better of him, and again it is the only action he ever truly apologizes for. It's when he stabs karin to get to danzo, hating that man so much and needing to undermine his belief that Sasuke wouldn't do anything to avenge his people. Every other moment his hatred is normal, I'd even go as far to say good.
His revenge quest is good if tragic because it's a poor consolation next to the justice he will never get, and his subsequent revenge against konoha lies within justice, works in tandem with it, and is good.

For my next hashimada fic I had a canon compliant idea where it’s hashimada at the founding of their village, trying to establish Konoha… the beginnings of their lesbian situationship…. All that crazy ass sexual tension that two shinobis w history on a mission alone would have…
All their sweet moments but on the flip side bc it’s canon compliant there’s this feeling of unrest as well… sweet yet chaste and fleeting. Kinda fluffy at the same time. Anyone get the vibes.

I've read your new hashimada fic and ahhh it pulled at my heart strings, this isn't exactly an idea for a fic, but I'm curious at what your take on mito and madara interactions? And for a hashimada fic would you put them in a poly relationship or is hashirama cheating her and madara is technically his mistress (maybe hashirama only views the marriage as deal to keep the alliance with the uzumaki, poor mito tho since in Minato's oneshot she is shown to genuinely have loved him). hi!! thank you for reading my hashimada fic ^_^. hmmm mito and madara interactions… i feel like madara doesn’t have any strong opinions on her, he might feel resentment towards her by proxy of sealing the kyuubi but hmmm other than that, she’s just another one of hashirama’s close people.
i do mention mito in my fic since it’s only canon divergence once madara wins the war, i think it’s more like? for back then, hashirama and madara weren’t exactly dating, I can’t imagine them dating… more like a crazy lesbian situationship that dooms the world, yes they’ve kissed and everything but it never crossed into that committed territory. people might have different views to me which is fine but personally i think neither had any conflicting thoughts about the marriage bc even if hashirama loved mito it’s not in the same way he loves madara u get me? mito can be romantic love of decades but madara is his other half and hashirama loves madara in a way that transcends romance, sense, death etc.
i wouldn’t put them in a poly relationship bc i don’t think madara could ever come to love mito (uninterested in everyone who isn’t hashirama) and i wouldn’t have hashirama cheating on mito bc i really think he would never. the way i hc it is that mito married hashirama once madara left, for the konoha uzushio alliance but they also felt genuine love, so if i were to write a fic where madara never leaves Konoha i would have mito marry someone else🤔poor girl I don’t want her to get cheated on, I think cheating can be interesting in fics but im not a fan of that in hashimada. i also don’t think madara would ever allow himself to become any sort of mistress figure; his pride and ego absolutely would not let him. Like to him that’s beneath him you get me? Hahahaha
madara and mito interactions would never be antagonistic to me in aus where madara stays, he might hold some respect for her sealing prowess, and maybe in a world where Madara finds happiness they can get along!
