If Cryptid Four is Enby, is Cryptid Shadow also Enby? Do all the colors identify as the same gender or do they identify differently? Apparently this is keeping me up at night
The colors are all their own people, and they do identify differently! Four, as we know them, is nonbinary. They use they/them pronouns. But the colors are different!
Red uses any/all (no gender, just vibes)
Blue uses he/she/they (gender fluid. They’ll tell you their preferred pronouns at any given time)
Vio uses he/they pronouns.
Green uses he/him.
Shadow uses he/him

What exactly is the hero’s spirit in this au? As there ever been a “normal” link
What is the Hero’s Spirit?
It’s Sky.
He forged it in the Goddess’s Silent Realm: a soul so strong, so powerful, that when it’s reincarnated, it’s inherently special. Unbreakable. Goddess blessed and Chosen. Every single Link is Sky’s spirit, with the exception of Wind and Spirit. (Wind who made his own and Spirit who inherited Wind’s).
I PROMISE that there’s more to this- about reincarnation and how that works with our immortal members of the group. Again, I feel guilty for talking about it without being able to reveal the full story. This one’s a MASSIVE spoiler and I will not say anything more on the subject haha.
And there have been “normal” (Hylian) Links, they just don’t stay Hylian for long haha! Take Sky or Time or Spirit, for example. Wild, too! All of the Cryptid Links are just that: cryptids! I tried my best to make them all different! But even if they weren’t little goblins, I think it’d be a stretch to call any Link “normal” haha!

Hey I forgot to mention Twilight. I don’t know why it slipped my mind haha! Twilight can see spirits and Poes (so he’d be able to see Spirit’s soul), but only when he’s in the shape of an animal and using his special senses.
I feel like it’s also pretty important to note that Wild isn’t a normal spirit. He’s like… a half Poe, in the sense that he is dead and he should be in the afterlife (technically), but he’s not lost. He’s in no rush to move on. He’s a more powerful spirit because he possesses the Hero’s Spirit- which I’ve already mentioned is kind of a booster for any spiritual or magical ability that a Link would have already had. (So Twi’s god powers are strengthened, Hyrule’s fairy magic is strengthened, etc.) Because Wild isn’t a typical spirit, everyone can see him!
sorry if it's been asked already, but can Wind still see ghosts? and if so, can he see spirit when he's using soul magic?
In my au, Wind cannot see ghosts. He’s a lil fish guy and we love him, but he’s not nearly spiritual/magical enough to see them. The only people who can see Spirit (uppercase) while his soul is separated from his body are spirits (lowercase) and Time, but only with his glowing eye! So Wild, Wars, and Time can see his soul, the rest are stuck with his empty body.

I'm curious, in your recent post talking about reapers, does that connect in any way to the bargainer statues in ToTK?
YES!! It does!
I’m not gonna get into it right now, because I feel like talking too much about it will be spoiling some things but… I mean. Think about the purpose of the statues. The purpose of Reapers.
They’re… kind of the same, don’t you think?

I LOVE UR LIL REAPER DUDE HES SO COOL AND PRETTY AND POGGERS I ADORE HIM SO MUCH!!! He deserves to have the best bonding experience with his train,,
JUST. IM NOT OVER THE SYMBOLISM OF LIKE,,, he does the usual transporting of people and goods, but taking that to the next level and also assisting in the transport of spirits and souls to their next adventure has me SO SOFT like,, this boy is helping everyone he can get to where they need to be!
I do have a few questions aside from my gushing, though! Uh first of all, I'd have to ask, when did he die? It's alright if it's not shared yet for lore reasons or if you just haven't decided yet, but it's interesting to me! Was he always able to see spirits? Was Zelda a one time deal, or is he only able to see her for his adventure because he'd already died and become a reaper?
ALSO!!! Does his normal body get rest when his spirit does reaping stuff? Or is it just completely unrestful "sleep" and he'd need to rest normally afterward to recover? Or would it be like, his body is recovered but his spirit is still tired? Is there some sort of gap between the two?
SORRY THIS ASK IS ALL OVER THE PLACE I DONT DO THIS VERY OFTEN i just once again wanna say thank u for adding spirit tracks and,, yeah! hes so very poggers and im very excited to see his dynamics with everyone!
Hi! I’m so glad that you like the Little Guy! I’m quite fond of him as well haha!
To answer your questions:
Spirit died pretty early into his adventure. He doesn’t remember the exact moment, but do you remember in like- the opening sequence of Spirit Tracks? When Byrne attacks Alfonzo and then hits Link SO HARD. Sends him FLYING. And we don’t see him get up until after Zelda’s spirit is removed from her body. That’s when he died. That hit killed him. And that’s when he started being able to see spirits. (That’s why he was able to see Zelda)
Secondly, he kind of rests while he’s reaping. You kind of got it already- his body is able to sleep but his mind is still active. He’s actively doing his job, which is labor, but it’s not physical. His sleep schedule is almost as messed up as Sky’s haha! He appears to be unconscious more often than not, but the only time he’s truly resting is when his soul is still within his body.
I hope this answers your questions? I love Spirit and I’m glad to have him in my au! There will definitely be more Spirit related content coming soon!!

Living in a world as populated as it is by mortals, it is rare to come across a being who is not so. Rarer still is it to come across one who is both mortal and immortal- those who toe the line between Life and Death.
Reapers are abundant but undetected, doing their work for the spirits while hidden in a mortal body. They are bound to no Gods, serving only the lost souls of the land and answering only to the inevitability of Life and Death.
Hylian legends depict Death as a woman clothed in flowing white fabric, serene and tranquil, everlasting and inescapable. Some fear her, some hate her. Most bunch her up with the Goddesses.
She is not a Goddess.
She is… a promise.
And just as they’ve cast Death’s image onto a Goddess that doesn’t exist, they attribute Life’s gifts to Hylia, singing her praise. Hylia, the little sister of the Golden Three, tasked with protecting this world, is not Life.
Life has existed here for far longer than Hylia has. Some say that she was created with the breath of Farore, others speculate that she came before.
People think that Death exists in Life’s shadow, that they are entirely separate from one another. One brings joy, the other brings pain. This is, wholly and entirely, untrue.
For Life and Death wear matching white cloth, and they stand so closely together that they are indistinguishable from each other. One cannot exist without the other. They are… the same, in nature. They are patient. They take nothing more than what they are given; they give nothing more than what they take. It is balanced, in that way.
Everyone must face them, one way or another. Even Gods cannot deny the push and pull of Life and Death.
Although, there are occasions in which they can be swayed. In the case of a young boy who’d met his end during his quest, so beloved by the spirits, Death chose to wait. She did not claim his soul, not yet. She heeded the pleas of the spirits and allowed him to continue on- to finish what he had started. But this was not without a cost.
The boy- only twelve years old- was named Link, and he was not unique. Those who are favored by the spirits and succumb to illness or injury are often granted these second chances. They may never remember that they had died, but they are forever changed.
These people are known as Reapers. They recruited by Death to guide lost spirits to the afterlife. They have heartbeats, they breathe, they require sustenance. Reapers are mortal, normal people.
Until it becomes time to do the reaping, that is.
In order for a Reaper to find and guide spirits, they must use spirit magic. Spirit magic is as potent and variable as any other type of magic, except its power source is distinct: it is fueled by the power of an untethered soul. It comes naturally to Reapers, except in order to use it, they must free their soul.
Reapers have the ability to separate their souls from their bodies, becoming nothing more than a spirit. Once freed, they are immediately pulled to the nearest lost soul and it is their duty to aid them in their journey to the next life. The pull of a Poe is just as potent as the pull of a portal: demanding and unavoidable. Reapers feel it physically.
When their soul is outside of their body, a Reaper will appear comatose to the waking world. Unresponsive and unmoving, almost like they’re asleep. Their hearts still beat, their lungs still breathe. They still live but there’s nothing there. If their body is moved during this time, the Reaper will have a difficult time returning to it. Their survival will depend on whether or not they can find their body.
Link is one of many Reapers that serve under Death, and he is not unhappy. He sees the Threads of Fate that bind all things- the red ones of the living, the black ones of the dead, and the white ones of the immortal- and he takes pride in helping wayward Poes follow these threads home. He… has experience guiding souls, after all.
Link doesn’t remember when exactly he died, but he knows it had to have happened during his quest to rid the Demon King from Princess Zelda’s body. With her spirit by his side, he felt unstoppable. And his new job isn’t much different. He doesn’t feel sadness when he guides a Poe to their next adventure. No, he feels… at peace.
Death is extremely welcoming to him, for she knows that in time, he will return to her. Just as all things do. Link- our Spirit- admires Death. He serves under her but he is not opposed to it. He’s wholly dedicated to his job. He takes pride in it. It doesn’t interfere with his waking life too much and even as he cast on another adventure, it’s not too much to manage. Death treats him well, and he’d never denounce her.
When he’s reaping, he’s making a difference. He’s helping people. Is that not what a hero should strive for?
He’s… home.
Some notes!
• This kind of turned into a post about Reapers specifically and less about Spirit, but ehhh lore is lore
• Spirit and Wind are BEST BUDS. I’ve been referring to them as “the twins” in my head this whole time
• Spirit’s pupils glow when he is looking at the Threads of Fate. He can’t see them all the time, just when he really focuses on them, or else he’d be blinded by all the string everywhere!
• More on that- he doesn’t only see the threads that bind people to each other. He also sees the threads that bind people to objects. Everything has a memory, everything has a story.
• Something about Spirit’s presence is so inherently peaceful. He speaks quietly and clearly, he moves like a whisp, he smiles so gently. He can 100% be a little goblin in his own right, but he can be incredibly comforting when he wants to be.
• He cannot swim. Wind is APPALLED.
• He knows that Time is a God right away. His string is white. He doesn’t tell anyone, though, because it’s not his place. Everyone has their secrets, everyone should have the right to reveal themselves at their own pace.
• He and Wild sure do have a relationship. Yep. Just. The Reaper- the one who is tasked with guiding lost souls. And the literal spirit, actual ghost. Uh huh. They. Um. Yeah, they definitely have a dynamic. (This dynamic is the reason that I was convinced to add Spirit to my Cryptid Chain)
• A spirit is any soul without a body. A Poe specifically refers to a spirit that is lost. Hopeless. One who needs help. Wild is not a Poe. (Kind of)
• Spirit is like Time in the sense that he has not fully ascended, and won’t until his mortal lifespan is over. When he dies, he will continue to be a Reaper, but much more powerful as he will not be bound to a body. But that’s far, far off. He’s twelve, I won’t be cruel to him
• hehehehe
• He’s so incredibly good at playing the pan flute.
• Also this kid’s hilarious without even trying. (Spirit Tracks is the funniest Zelda game of all time)
• NERD. HE LOVES HIS TRAINS. HE IS IN PHYSICAL PAIN THAT NONE OF THE OTHER LINKS EVEN KNOW WHAT A TRAIN IS!!! SEND HELP!!! TELL HIM ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE TRAINS!!! HE MISSES HIS TRAIN!!!
• He has the unique ability to talk to Poes and Spirits directly, so he’s gonna be the best bet when it comes to translating for Wild. If Wild will let him come close, that is.
• “Don’t disturb me guys, I have some reaping to do,” he says, and then takes a nap. The others can’t tell.
• Or, mid battle, the decides they could really use a blast of spirit magic to aid them. So he just. Separates his soul from his body, as one does. Falls limply to the ground as the monsters they were fighting just suddenly all die. What just happened???
• Do monsters have souls? Do they become Poes? Thoughts that keep Spirit up at night.

I decided to make Cryptid Sky an Avian because he’s the Bird Boy. He always has been the Bird Boy and always will be the Bird Boy. Originally, the Cryptid au was supposed to be a Mer au! Because I love drawing Mer haha. But I only got as far as designing Sky before I realized I wasn’t super excited about the idea. Taking Sky away from the sky? Unthinkable. I scrapped the whole idea and let the bird boy fly.
As for deciding to make him a Loftwing? It just felt natural haha! In Skyward Sword, Loftwings are specifically said to be the other half of a person’s soul, and Sky is the first hero. The one who forged the Hero’s Spirit. Well, what’s a spirit if not a soul? And how can you strengthen a soul that is split in half? So I brought the two back together, thus creating the Avian we all know and love! Not Link, not Aepon. Sky.
(And of course, a big reason for giving Sky wings is that I wanted to draw wings haha! Sky’s wings are some of my new favorite things to draw, actually! Are they anatomically correct? No way. But they’re fun!)
While he can’t shapeshift (that’s Twilight’s thing), he DOES act more Link-like or more Aepon-like depending on certain interior or exterior stimuli. He is very much a bird. Chirps and squawks and sings like a bird. He’s just. He’s my guy. I love him so much haha!
I’ve been wondering which of our Sky’s has bigger wings 🤔
Hmmmmmmmm I had to do some research for this one!
Looking at your art (which is AMAZING, by the way), I think that their wingspans are pretty similar. But it looks like my Sky has fuller wings! So… wider? Longer feathers!
Your Sky is based off of a frigate bird, which the internet told me has around a 7.5 foot wingspan. (I did a double take! That’s HUGE!!) My Sky is a fusion between a Loftwing (Shoebill stork) and a Skyloftian (person). The internet told me that a shoebill stork’s wingspan can get up to 8.5 feet long! Which is longer than the frigate bird but NOT if we account for the ratio of body to wing. Frigate birds legitimately look like if a child drew an “m” on a paper to represent birds. They’re like 90% wing and I love them for that.
So. If we took these proportions and sized them up to fit onto a person, I think, realistically, your Sky would have bigger wings than mine. Longer. Mine would still have fuller wings, though. The way that we draw their wings is very similar in length, like if they both represented the wingspan alone. But if we account for the proportions of body size to wing?? Yours would be HUGE in comparison to mine!
I think? I’d love to hear your input on this haha!

Hi ! Sorry if you already answered that but does Wild care about the god reveal thing ? Cause Time is shiny- And he loves shiny things. But at the same time would Wild actually just stuck around him more ? Since yk he prefers to hang out with the huh... Spirit related people ? Or does he go and be lonely :') ? Does he even get lonely ? Since he steals the others things because it's shiny some must have to be upset with him right ? And some might hold grudges against him for more time than others and knowing that Wild probably can't help himself but : I need shiny thing.
The others are probably going to be upset at him that he never stop doing that. And then some are going to either confront him about it and he might close up in his shell or they'll avoid him or be cold with him and that would impact the relationship. And since he doesn't talk much all by himself he might not have any interactions or very few and that might be for battles etc... So would he get lonely ?
Hylia did I ramble... I love your AU ! 'S not my fault you did smt to make my brain go : Zoomies time my cotton ball
Before the God Reveal, everyone just kind of assumed that Time was a spirit. And they assumed this specifically because Wild was so close with him. Wild can communicate ideas telepathically with other spirits and spiritual beings- like Wars and Time. He can communicate complete sentences and words to Spirit, who is a Reaper. Time, apart from being generally shiny, seems to understand Wild, and Wild is very close with him, so everyone just assumed. They had no reason to think that a literal God was among them.
(Sky knew because he’s had enough experience with Gods to recognize them. Spirit knew because of his massive displays of power, which only the Reaper could detect. But everyone else was clueless. At least… at first).
So the God Reveal doesn’t really change how Wild sees Time. He’s still a shiny guy. Still one of the few people in the group that can understand him. They stay close, because honestly? Wild doesn’t care about Gods. Even a little bit. He cares more about the people that Time hurt because of his secrets. The trust between them is rattled, but yeah. Wild still talks to him. He still pokes at the eye. Touches the armor. Forgets about personal space.
Wild can get lonely. He’s a very social creature, having lived surrounded by forest spirits his whole life- er, his whole… death? He doesn’t remember being alive haha! Just the Blupees and Koroks that play with him, the Deku Tree that guides him, the Lord of the Mountains for which he’s named. Wild thrives off of closeness. He needs companionship.
And I’ve actually gotten a lot of asks about this haha! The Cryptid Chain are not mad a Wild. They’ll get (understandably) annoyed when Wild tries to touch them or steal their things, but it’s mostly playful. Harmless. There’s no bad blood between them. They all LOVE Wild! He’s such a little guy. And he’s a good brother. They WANT him to be close to them.
EVEN LEGEND.
(Legend’s just… Legend about it)
And on the communication thing! It’s true that only Wars, Time, and Spirit can telepathically shares ideas (and in Spirit’s case, whole conversations) with him, but that doesn’t mean that the others can’t understand him! Wild is VERY expressive, and the others have gotten very good at reading his body language! It’s a two way street- both sides need to put effort into being understood. Wild is so very loved. I need you to know that.

More Links in a Chain/Chain as Cryptids au crossover sketches because I have no self control!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured are: Tash’s Sky holding my Wars. He can guide Sky in the same way that Fi can- probably even better, since he’s actually conscious. (No offense, Fi). And then there’s Tash’s Wild, meeting his own ghost. Exciting. And then our Skys, because I do pick favorites and I LOVE THEM!!!
This is a crossover of my Cryptid au and @tashacee’s fic: Links in a Chain. Really, it’s a collection of fics but if you haven’t already read them, PLEASE DO!!! Tash has such wonderful stories!!
I love throwing our Links at each other and seeing what happens when they collide. It genuinely makes my whole day getting to talk about them. And with Tash’s permission, I’m sharing some art with you!

YES!!!! I love the little guys haha!!!
For those who don’t know, because I can’t remember if I’ve said this publicly or not, Wild has magical hair! Think… Lion from Steven Universe, or Eda the Owl Lady haha! He doesn’t have a Sheikah Slate, but he can store A LOT in his hair!
Legend gets reasonably annoyed when Wild steals his things, but there’s no real animosity between them. Legend would be such a hypocrite for being angry at Wild for being a thief. He, himself, is a little pickpocketing menace.
Legend and Wild are BROTHERS and they have my whole heart and THANK YOU, TASH for drawing them!! I love it!!!

@sapphicseasapphire's wonderful cryptid bois, hanging out! I love Legend and Wild so much, they're such lil guys. Legend doesn't hate Wild! He's just Legend and Like That. Wild loves Legend. He has MANY shinys.
Thank you to @a-manicured-lawn for the idea of the Chain keeping whole ass drinks in Legend's hair lmao

I’m not sure if this was asked already or if someone has asked something similar but does Wild disappear like a Blupee when caught or startled?
Yes! As a spirit, Wild can do this one of two ways:
1. He teleports. Wild does not have Sheikah technology in my au. No Slate, no shrines, no towers. The whole reason that he’s a spirit is because he was not brought to the Shrine of Resurrection in time. However, he can still teleport around his Hyrule- only in his Hyrule. He’s not limited to shrines, either, he can teleport anywhere. If he’s startled be can simply peace out.
2. He becomes invisible. Well. Not necessarily invisible, but harder to detect. He is, at his core, a Poe. Poes appear to most people as little flames. Small lights, often blue. Wild can choose to look like this to others- to change how they see him. A small blue flame, undetectable to eyes who are unfamiliar with spirits and souls, can be a very good way to hide.

No rush with this ask but I just remembered! Back in my last ask you said you finally got Four figured out, I'd love to hear about their lore! Unabashed favorite character alert, I think Four's design is so cool and I love their concept so I super wanna hear about em. Like I said, no rush if U wanna tackle Spirit's lore reveal first
Nonono I’m happy to talk about Four!
Full disclosure, I’m very busy with schoolwork (the semester ends in like two weeks!!! I’m barely hanging on) so I don’t currently have the mental capacity to sit and write pages and pages of lore. Writing is so incredibly draining for me, so you probably won’t be getting a full lore post for Spirit until this weekend! It’s one of those things that will take pages and pages to explain and I just… can’t do that right now haha! So I’m happy to talk about Four in the mean time!
Four is… a special case. I want them to be a mystery. Every time someone asks about their backstory- particularly about Shadow- I will always respond by telling them it’s a spoiler. (As I’m starting to organize my thoughts and get my feet under me to get serious about actually writing fics, I’m getting more secretive about story elements. I don’t mean to dangle it in front of your faces, but I don’t want to spoil the big things! I’m sorry if this seems cruel).
Four is pretty secretive about their past, very protective of the things they love, and still working through a lot of their issues. The colors are having a bit of a rough time reflecting on their adventures and so Four… doesn’t really talk about it a lot.
Like I said before, I want Four to be a closed book. The others will know them as an Enigma. They’ve never seen anything like Four before. I will say that they are an original species- like the Aquili for Wind. Their horns are normal for their people. Their affinity for the elements is normal for their people. Their ability to split? Not so much. The colors are still a secret.
(Think… dragons.)
Four thinks it’s entertaining to keep the others guessing. At first, it’s a defense mechanism. Trying to keep their cards close to their chest, never giving the others too much of themself. But as trust starts to grow between the Chain, it kind of becomes more of a running joke? Sometimes, they’ll give small bits of information over dinner. Long nights sitting around the fire. They’ll tell stories of their adventures, but they’d mess up with pronouns and perspectives the same way that Sky does.
Sky, for the same reason, doesn’t share much. Telling stories is hard when there’s multiple consciousnesses trying to speak through one mouth.
Again! I’m sorry, I know you probably wanted more backstory, but just like Four, I’m keeping my cards close to my chest for this one. It’s a secret to the Chain, and it’s a secret to everyone. Just know that I typically don’t stray too far from the game’s (and in this case, the Manga’s) canon. Or at least. I try not to.
