just realized that the worm speech was the last interaction between nikolai and pyotr. like nikolai fully ghosted him (literally) after pyotr called him his sun fucking brutal

i absolutely love that dostoevsky chose to open demons with vavara and stepan. it's so so interesting to meet these flawed but ultimately deeply emotional and loving characters and then be introduce to their demonic ass sons with no moral compass. when evaluating the grander story, vavara and stepan are ultimately sort of detached from the whole fivesome debacle. for fuck's sake, they're literally not even in the same province at the end. the whole book they've sort of just got their own shit going on while nikolai and pyotr terrorize everyone.
but. but. they're important anyway, if only for the contrast they provide. their relationship mirrors pyotr and nikolais' in a way; stepan idolizes vavara in a way similar to how pyotr idolizes nikolai. but a distinction is made at the end: nikolai dies completely alone, rejected even by his own mother while pyotr sets off (also alone) to god knows where. stepan dies with vavara and some random but kind girl he met earlier that week. his death feel comparatively much happier.
i feel like there are a lot of reasons why dostoevsky might've presented it that way, a lot of ways their relationships are different, but what sticks out to me is the fact that stepan and vavara actually knew each other. like, knew knew. pyotr projected his image of an ideal onto nikolai and worshipped that; nikolai didn't care for pyotr at all beyond amusement. but reading demons, you get the sense that, for all their misunderstandings, vavara and stepan do actually understand each other.
also it's just fun to have their parents involved because they are so horrible. usually awful characters don't have parents present in the story because it's a reminder that they used to be children and it humanizes them etc but vavara and stepan are just like. there
anyway stavrogin + verkhovensky (chaotic) >> stavrogin + verkhovensky (demonic)

thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.

"raskolnikov's struggle throughout crime and punishment is reconciling the part of his mentality that allowed him to commit murder and the part that allowed him to condemn it" no. raskolnikov's ideological struggle is between the part of him that is canonically super tall and the part of him that idolizes fucking napoleon
