"I'm so glad that you were released. For the longest time, I feared that everyone's efforts would be for nothing..."

Hifumi smiles as she talks to Akira, hands gently placed on her lap as she enjoys the atmosphere of the cafe they're seated in. The bitterness she feels upon thinking about his previous arrest is unpleasant, but it's soothed by his presence here now, so it doesn't hurt to talk about it anymore - though she doesn't know what kind of feelings the memories hold for him.

It made her think a lot, when it happened. No... maybe even before that; back when she first realized that Akira was Joker, the Phantom Thieves' leader... that's when the thoughts started appearing in her head. Thoughts about justice, and what it really meant - along with people's ability to fight back against injustice, even in small ways... of course, she'd always known that there were unfair things in the world, but it had never really felt like she had any power to do anything about them.

But when she had managed to help Akira find his freedom again, Hifumi had felt so proud of herself. ...Perhaps such a thing was arrogant of her - she wasn't the only one fighting, after all, and sometimes she wonders if her presence made all that much of a difference in the end. But that doesn't change how pleased she is that she was able to help at all. Akira has done so much for her, after all...

"But I suppose you'd rather not think about that now. How have you been? It really has been a long time."

GOD THAT LAST STARTER WOKE UP MY TOSHIRO MUSE SO BAD...

i'm still desperate for like, interactions between my toshiro and other p5 characters who are kind of like. investigating him. trying to figure out wtf happened when he vanished. people don't know about the metaverse or do know but don't know his involvement... etc. i don't think i'm too likely to find any threads like that atm but also...

i'd love to see the P3 cast/shadow operatives investigating him too?? especially if they're suspicious of him or don't trust him for some reason. i'm not sure what that reason would be, i just feel like i'd really enjoy it! + the potential for both muses involved to be shocked at each other's involvement with shadows/personas when they figure it out... i love. >:)

"Sakura-san! It feels like it's been forever."

When Toshiro finally made his way back to the real world after believing he might not ever see it again, he knew he might not be able to see the Phantom Thieves for a long time. With what he planned to do - and has done, now- exposing his father's crimes, as well as accepting his own responsibility for staying silent for so long - he'd known that his life would quickly become a chaotic one.

But to call it merely a scandal would be putting it lightly. With the constant attention and scrutiny he was suddenly subjected to, under fire with criticism from all directions and having sent ripples of shock through the entire country - he didn't want to subject those kids to any potential negative attention that might come from being associated with him.

It might've been fine, of course, but it wasn't worth the risk. Anyway, the media had had enough of a field day trying to figure out the truth behind his abrupt disappearance alone, coming up with all kinds of crazy, ridiculous theories... though of course, none even as close to as crazy as the truth. The thought makes him laugh. ...They really have no idea.

But he couldn't keep the poor kids worried any longer after seeing firsthand how worried they were for him. In particular, he's especially glad to be able to meet with Futaba today. He's grateful to each and every one of the Thieves, and they've all wormed their way into his heart, of course, but when he thinks back on his time in the Kingdoms... often, it's Sakura's words to him that he remembers the most.

"I'm sorry about the hassle. Avoiding the media can be a bit of a nightmare, but... let's say I've picked up some tricks along the way!"

"Oh, no, it's fine. I'm not undercover or anything." Zenkichi assures Maruki with a slight smile, waving off his concern casually. ...It feels like he's undercover, though. He often feels that way nowadays, after everything he's learnt since meeting the Phantom Thieves for the first time... it's a ridiculous habit that he really needs to shake off, but maybe it just hasn't been long enough yet, because it's always playing on his mind.

It wouldn't do to become arrogant and start thinking of himself as better than others because of it. He of all people knows there's no way in hell he has the right to think like that - and he wouldn't want to. But the secrets he knows now are so extreme in nature that it's hard not to let his thoughts wander sometimes... Like they're doing right now.

"Ah, I don't know about that. I mean, I like to think I'm pretty sharp for my age, but..." Zenkichi laughs - it seems like he's more making a joke than he is bragging. "I find myself surprised all the time."

And isn't that an understatement?

"Besides, you strike me as the type of guy who's a bit more than he seems yourself. Call it my own intuition."

From the look he'd received, it seemed like Maruki had been right on the money as far as that guess was concerned. Not that he was too surprised, but it was nice to know that he hadn't lost his edge. His perceptiveness had helped him not only in his research and counseling, but in his taxi driving efforts. It was easier to pick up on which people were open to chatting as opposed to who wasn't. Some people wanted to vent, some to brag, and some wanted nothing more than a silent ride. He did his best to deal with all of them accordingly.

He can't help but let out a chuckle at the answer he's given. “I hope I haven't gotten you in trouble for pointing that out!” Was it meant to be a secret? Was Zenkichi meant to be undercover down here, scoping someone out? If so, he supposed he may have accidentally blown the case open. Not that he intended to get in the way of anything regardless. “It's just an old habit of mine.” It had helped him pick up on Phantom Thieves before. Those days were passed now, though, as was the peak of the group's activity.

“If you're an officer, I'd say you're probably even more skilled on picking up on these sorts of things than I am,” he offered modestly. Sure, he'd studied a branch of psychology, but primarily in the cognitive sense, and he didn't use it nowadays. He had to assume his own skills would be rusty when compared to someone who was more likely to survive off of such perceptions day to day. While he was curious about what sort of impression he gave off these days, he wasn't sure it was his place to ask more from him, considering the confession he'd already gotten.
