It's not a mistranslation! It does say 'fell for you' which is a word used for romantic purposes. However, it's definitely not meant t o be taken in that context.

I think the best way I can explain it is how you say 'i was taken by you' (?) in english. It's definitely used romantically however, someone can also use it in JUST admiration. Like when you see someone do a very good job, or if someone excelled at something, etc.

I could be wrong but it could be because being 幼馴染み 「childhood playmate」 is different from just knowing someone since you were a kid.

In Japan, 幼馴染み has a special relationship that I can't really explain in english. It's just that the relationship between them is not that simple.
