Hot take the best DMs aren’t ones who have some incredible, completely original, lore-deep story planned for you. The best DMs are the ones who are creative, good at improv, have a neat world, and know their players.

They know exactly what will make the game the most fun for each person, and they tailor it so. Let your players make the story; if you try to, you might enjoy it but they won’t. If you want to write a story then go write a book. D&D is a ttrpGAME and the entire purpose is to have fun.

GO on that adventure with your players and give them a story they’ll want to tell people about more than the story of their own wedding. Pick fights you know will challenge them, and if they don’t like fights, then DON’T PUSH THEM into a fight. You are a narrator. Best DMs are happiest when the team you’re leading is at maximum fun level, no matter what that means doing, even if you feel like it’s unoriginal-

D&D going mainstream really messed up people's expectations cause chances are you're not gonna find a DM who has the free time, talent and resources to put on a tale that competes with Tolkien. you're gonna find your friend's roommate Phil who's read one of the manuals a few times and has to pause to get a calculator out to figure out how much damage your attack did and his story is blatantly ripping off a dragon age 2 side quest
