Oh! You were such a happy child

When I was younger my smile could light up a room,

now it is expected.

When I was small messing up was cute,

Now it’s unacceptable.

Oh! You were such a happy child

Maybe it was because as I child I didn’t carry the weight to succeed.

I didn’t understand the fight of poverty

that my parents always fought for me.

and that it was all just for me to exceed the limits given to me.

Or maybe it was because I didn’t see the disadvantages I have,

that someone could think the color of skin

was bad.

Oh! You were such a happy child

That was before the choice of who to love,

was bad.

Before I realized that,

being a woman was sad,

and full of misery,

people make it seem like a disability.

It was because as a child,

Life was worthwhile,

I was, undefiled,

I wasn’t a poor, gay, beaner.

Memories of my childhood are still there,

sitting in thin crisp air,
