Those questions that are like "is it cheating? 🤔 is it cheating in a box? Is it cheating wearing socks?" get me cause it really makes it clear how a lot of people just aren't communicating their personal boundaries & betting on some universal truth of what's right and wrong. And then like 90% of people acting like that are deeply insecure so you end up with those people who are like "is it morally okay if you even fucking look at another person or should I kill them"

Eleanor's gradual descent into childishness marks The Haunting of Hill House as a sort of bildungsroman in reverse: she doesn't grow into adulthood, but rather develops her hitherto latent capacity for immaturity. Disturbingly and tellingly - it is not wholly clear that the narrative encourages readers to regard her steady transformation into brattishness as regressive. While it is clear eyed and discerning about the suicidal implication of her vertiginous descent, there is a subtle insinuation that ultimately death itself is Eleanor's cup of stars worth insisting upon - or at least a price worth paying in exchange for the fantasy of abiding forever in an alternate domestic universe wherein a self-indulgent spirit may run riot.

id: Perhaps the greatest horror of Jackson's haunting is not that the house seduces Eleanor into literally sacrificing herself for the sake of belonging, but that having done so, it still does not let her belong. Eleanor may imagine herself to be joining the ghostly children who try to enter her room, sing to her, hold her, and ask her for help, but this promised intimacy is as delusive as any other in Hill House. In Kahane's terms, Eleanor has given her life to become "everything" and has become nothing. The house does not want her any more than anyone else does; it wants her dead. After all, whatever walks in Hill House walks alone.

POEM
You called, you’re on the train, on Sunday, I have just taken a shower and await you. Clouds are slipping in off the ocean, but the room is gently lit by the green shirt you gave me. I have been practicing a new way to say hello and it is fantastic. You were so sad: goodbye. I was so sad. All the shops were closed but the sky was high and blue. I tried to walk it off but I must have walked in the wrong direction.
