I have so many feelings about being a 4 eyed genderless alien in a dying solar system. Trees are magic. Marshmallows are universal. Music will make the world.

i love seeing other people post about the mechanics of outer wilds like. we’ve all experienced crashing your ship into ash twin trying to get to ember twin. we all know the pain of going “ive totally got this” before smashing into bits of debris around brittle hollow. we all know how absolutely maddening it is to hear the sun music when you JUST got somewhere cool and know it’s gonna be hard to get back there

When Outer Wilds decided to compare exploring your local solar system with a hike in the woods what it really did was to say that science and exploration are already worthwhile just for the act of experiencing something yourself firsthand. Just going out and seeing new things.
The whole game is about looking at things. Nomai controls following the look of your reticle. Quantum objects changing when you look away and back again. The Eye of the Universe sitting there and waiting for you to perceive it.
When you enter the Eye first there is nothing, then the first thing you see is the first thing you know that is real - yourself. Then you see the world around you, and then the people that are most important to you. Then you bring about a whole new existence, just by being there and perceiving, and bringing in your own experiences.
Outer Wilds is about how just being there and experiencing the world is enough of a reason to exist.

*outer wilds spoilers*
god i’m thinking about the traveler and solanum because imagine you’re exploring an ancient city and you find the doodles and notes of a little kid playing with her friends. and imagine you keep finding the handwriting of this kid, tracking her life as she grows up, goes to school, becomes excited about exploring the stars just like you are doing. just like you were excited. imagine knowing that all of her people died thousands of years ago and there’s nothing you can do about it.
and imagine you’re exploring and you’re retracing her steps, because you love this kid. you care about this kid. and you want to understand what happened to her people, so you can maybe understand what’s happening to your sun, but also because you just care about them. you’ve always cared about them. it’s what made you want to become an explorer.
and imagine you find her. imagine you find her alive, and well, and none the wiser, because time hasn’t passed for her like it has for the rest of the universe. and you try to speak to her, and she doesn’t understand you, so you can’t tell her that you know her. you can’t tell her that you’ve come to think of her as a friend, a kind of companion in your journey through the solar system. but you indicate yourself, and you indicate her, and hope she understands. she says that even though she doesn’t speak your language, this encounter feels special. and she says,
“i hope you won’t mind if i think of you as a friend.”
and you don’t mind. in fact, you would like that very much.

sorry I'm not done thinking about outer wilds. I'm thinking about how the Nomai saw the proto versions of the Hearthians wiggling out of the water and said "look at them, they're beautiful, we have to keep this planet safe so it will be viable for them, and maybe we will know them someday" and they died before they could, but they left their influence all over Timber Hearth and the planets beyond and the Hearthians eventually built ships and translators and took to the stars and played songs for each other in the depths of space and everywhere they went, they found traces of the Nomai and wanted so badly to understand them, and one day a hatchling astronaut went to space for the first time, stared down a supernova with a translator in hand and thought "well that won't do" and took it upon themself to learn all they could about the Nomai and learn from all of what the Nomai left them and finish what they started and do what they never could in the Nomai's memory. All because some Nomai saw some four eyed creatures crawl out of a geyser and they loved them. The Nomai wanted to know the Hearthians and they never could, but the Hearthians knew them and loved them in return
