Flour sack animation with background!!! ITS DONE!!! I know that there are still some small things that I could have changed but given the deadline and the fact I did a whole nother version for clean up, I’ve decided not to make anymore alterations, I think this mystery brief has been super fun and I’ve really enjoyed looking at the techniques used to make a flour sack move.

Fully finished background for my flour sack animation, I was very confused about the rules and honestly I’m not the biggest fan of it but with a completed animation of top I don’t think it will look as bad

Reference photos for my flour sack background, a grassy area, which is the terrain in which it will take place, and a night sky, since in the game hostile mobs only spawn at night.

After spending under an hour animating a brand new flour sack, I was given feedback by an unknown member of my class in order to improve my animation. The feedback I was given was helpful and pointed out things I originally didn’t notice, and some of these notes may carry through into my final flour sack animation and will be helpful overall. As mean as I felt giving criticism, I think this was quite fun, and I hope we can use it again to help better my work in the future.

THE CHAIR IS DONE!!! Honestly has been quite difficult but having been trying to make the most of the experience, I am going to try and get the phone done soon but I will prioritize my essay and some of the 2D work I want to clean up first

One of the photos from Tom Moore’s lecture, where he talked about cartoon saloon’s ‘Wolfwalkers’ giving us an insight into how the film was created. He talked aboout his wide animation career, where he worked in all different parts of the industry creating work with different companies such as Green Peace. This talk was really interesting as Tom has had such a wide range of experience in the industry and I believe he gave us a really good insite to what a career in animation entails.
“Technology is the frind of the traditional animation. It doesnt have to replace it. It can help you do it.” -Tomm Moore

After a million technical issues and a near nervous breakdown later, THE CHAIR IS COMING ALONG!!! Honestly I don’t think I’m going to get around to finishing the final scene but I am going to do my best to complete the phone.

@ mitchleeuwe on Instagram drew some examples of flour sack poses and uses examples of how to turn them into characters based on shapes. He has a book for character design I’m considering buying since he explains character designs, shapes, expressions etc very well. His page is full of examples and explanations of how to make improvements to make aspects of character design in terms of animation, I recommend everyone take a look.

Flour sack research references
Tumblr media
This gif shows the kind of smooth movement my flour sack will be doing, the way it leans in and out of its steps, the way the arms move with its body and the follow through movement of its ears and tail, give me a very clear idea of the kind of movement I want to portray in my flour sack. The ties in the corners of the sack moving will be the follow through action, and it will lean back as it walks, distributing its weight throughout it body.
Tumblr media
This gif of the carpet from ‘Aladdin’s movement is very similar to that of the flour sack, its shape and corner tassels being used as ‘hands and feet’ are good references for my flour sacks movement. it’s exaggerated expressions and large twists and turns are the kind of thing I would like to show in my own animation, although it may be harder since the flour sack needs more realistic weight distribution since it’s full, and may change shape depending on the way it moves, whilst the carpet is flat and more dynamic.

Was having issues drawing the cape, making the fabric move, so decided to animate a little ghost as another practice for fabric animations
