Wait, I'm not done with this one yet!
Bible under the cut:
Way before Star Allies happened and having escaped from his personal hell, Marx went on to study to become a physicist (specifically, an astrophysicist).
Marx had previously dedicated himself to extensively observing and studying several dimensional anomalies and rifts throughout all of space. He knew they were a mess, but holy shit!
But he most certainly has grown more alarmed of his newfound discoveries about how the use (and abuse) of these dimensional space rifts (plus the whole deal with the Jambastion Fortress and Void Termina) has certainly left a mark that can open a lot of holes that distort time-space randomly.
That's not the worst part. While Marx knows that his numbers might not turn into a reality (they could, but not at his own predictions), he speculates that, at the pace these holes and such are opening, a phenomena could happen that might finally break space and eliminate everything known.
He has found himself talking to several people (even fellow scientists) at this point, and much to his chargrin, nobody really listens to him beyond a quick discussion of previous incidents.
He has gone to the point of swinging on this awful pendulum of "Well, if nobody listens to me, I might as well save myself," and "This day will eventually come and I will laugh, LAUGH, at every single one of you for not listening to me! We will all rot together!"
But wait, maybe he's not just sounding like a random loon to everyone!
Marx eventually finds out that Zan is definitely interested in his findings in spite of not liking him (or everyone for that matter), albeit for different reasonings and with the same goal.
Zan, we know her already, former cult member and Hyness right hand (wo)man.
After the events of Star Allies, the three mage sisters have been eagerly rebuilding their lives, but as any family, there are disagreements, some reconcileable others are not. Fran and Flame wanted to stay as far away from the cult as possible. Zan, on the other hand, is more reluctant to leave and might restart the cult to continue Hyness' legacy at any moment given.
Obviously, this has caused her other two sisters to drift away from her, leaving Zan with lots of free time, maybe a little too much free time...
Zan has definitely taken her time to observe these breakages without much explanation of what is behind these. She has tried to, but she needs an explanation beyond "divine grace."
All she knows is that the times she becomes aware of these changes, they either stop completely or stir things up even more.
Even what she perceives to be her own reality seems to be altered or even completely off, in a way she has found impossible to describe or discern, she just KNOWS is not correct.
She eventually landed with one of Marx's ramblings regarding space rifts and general anomalies. How could somebody just so... exasperating and vile be so eloquent and knowledgeable? AND HOW WAS NOBODY LISTENING TO HIM?! If no soul was gonna do it, she might as well do! So she set herself to listen to him and even taking the time to read to his papers.
Both fill each others twisted little corners in some way or another, but they would rather kill and die than admit it.
Does she still fervently believe in her own religion (the one given by Hyness)? YES!
Has she come up with her own theological explanation for it? Well, she's certainly going places! Very dark and inescapable places, but going places nevertheless...
Zan has basically drawn the conclusion that these manifestations are just the beginning of the end for everything and everyone known.
Whatever we see or experiment during these phases will end up being irreversible, that this will end up being Void, punishing us for our misdeeds and hubris.
That yes, salvation is possible, not physical one, because of the reasons previously mentioned by Marx, but we can earn forgiveness for our souls in the afterlife.
Basically, making amends with our end since that's the only thing possible left to do.
TL;DR: Both believe everybody is gonna die. Marx wants to stop it or deter it at the very least, but Zan has already accepted doom with little to no resistance.
Unhinged fucking idea of Marx and Zan getting along over generic doomsday ideas. But only that. Outside of that they would attempt to kill each other for sacrifice.
