Live(In) the Life
Check out the video for the full tour!!
youtube
Let's start off this brand new location by taking a look at the live-in quarters of this abandoned house!!
Once located in a wonderfully quiet rural area surrounded by forest and agricultural land, we find a small street with about 5 abandoned houses. The properties were bought for redevelopment and are currently being replaced with higher density housing.
One of the homes has already been demolished with another house that looks like it had burned down. There are also a few outbuildings on some of the properties along with the remains of a couple vehicles as well as a small motorcycle.
With half of the new development already completed, this area is going through a huge transformation and will never look the same!
Today we will be visiting the final of the three homes, the house was owned by a man named Bill and his wife Christine. They were married very late in life, in fact it was not until 2007 when they tied the knot and at the time, Christine was 69 years old. They both loved cats and had numerous strays make their house a second home, allowing them to come and go as they please through a pet door. They had a good 15 years together as a married couple until Christine passed away in 2022 at the age of 84 in this very house. Bill was by her side the entire time and took care of her in her final days.
Bill had a passion for working with wood dating back to his childhood. He started by selling wooden pens on the side while also working full time as a salesman for 35 years. He would also go on to make a wooden rocking horse for each of his grandchildren.
In 2010 after he had retired, Bill met a wood turner named George who introduced him to a whole new world of woodworking. He bought himself a lathe which was a Canadian Tire special and started a business selling his creations. He also dabbled in fractal burning to give his finished pieces an extra special look. He sold his work online as well as at some of the local artisan markets.
Bill would later pass away, shortly after his wife Christine.

And finally, let's have a look at this more modernised house next door that was clean enough to move right in!!
Today we will be exploring two of the three remaining houses. The first house house is a cozy looking bungalow that appears to have had an addition later in its life. The home was filled with many personal belongings along with some furniture and even a minivan left behind the house. House number two is a bungalow that was in much better shape having had some updates over the years, it was very clean with only a few possessions left behind. There are a few interesting surprises on these two properties, join me as we uncover their secrets.

Hoarding Issues
Don't forget there is also a video that shows the whole house!!
youtube
And finally, here is a set of photos which show some of the items that were left behind!!
This week we get to explore an extreme hoarding situation. It appears as though the house has been abandoned for about 13 years since the latest date I could find was from 2011. The large home has not faired well during that time suffering from water damage due to a failing roof. The ceiling has completely collapsed in the master bedroom and insulation covers everything in the room. All of the personal belongings have been strewn about the house including boxes that used to be full of stuff. There was broken glass hidden beneath that clutter everywhere you walked making for a treacherous environment.
I was not able to find much definitive information about the previous owners other than a man who lived in the house was born in 1943 and presumably his wife who was born in 1961 in Hong Kong.
There is a rumour that both the husband and wife were doctors and the husband had their license revoked for a short period before he would later resign from his practice. The wife had continued to work in the field. I was not able to find any evidence of this in my research. However, I did learn that the husband worked as an airport supervisor from paperwork found in the home.
As for the reason why the house was abandoned, that we may never know but in situations like this, it is entirely possible that one or both of owners passed away.
Seeing the condition of this home, it could certainly be saved if someone wealthy had a lot of money to sink into the project but the reality is, with the extensive damage the building has received, it will likely be demolished in the future.

Abandoned Neighbourhood - House 8
You can find the video tour here!!
youtube
Moving along we take a look at the master bedroom along with some more of the main floor!!
Partially updated from its original 1988 build this is the eighth house in the my series of the abandoned neighbourhood. It was a two-storey brown brick house with a partially updated interior that still had almost all of the original stained hardwood details such as the staircase and floors. Rooms like the kitchen and the bathrooms look to have been updated once since it was built but in a tasteful way. Unfortunately like many of the other homes on the abandoned street, the basement was flooded, so we only get a glimpse of what it may have looked like.
Once located down a mature tree lined street and surrounded by forest and walking trails was a group of 14 abandoned luxury houses. They were bought by a developer for prices ranging from $3 million - $8 million dollars. The homeowners were given two years to live in the homes rent free before they were demolished.
Westford Homes was the original builder of the neighbourhood in the 80s, there were 5 different designs of homes to choose from. All of the houses were built in 1988 and each one had a single brick with the builders name on it.
There was opposition to the new development that will replace this one but ultimately it was approved. The current amendment allows for 139 new homes to be built and the size of the houses will be up to 4000 sq/ft. The neighbourhood is already long since sold out and the price of the homes was around the $2 million mark.

The Raccoon Mansion
You can see the full video walkthrough here!!
youtube
And finally, let's take one final look at this fire damaged house with a peak at the second floor!!
Built in 1983 and lived in for just 20 years before this mansion was abruptly abandoned. In 2003/04 after a small fire that started in the basement, this mansion received massive smoke damage and destroyed a lot of the owner's personal belongings. From notes found throughout the home, it looks as though they did try to salvage what they could before leaving. But with many personal items, kids' clothing and furniture left behind, this home was extremely interesting to explore. The basement was flooded at some point and pretty much everything is left down there.
Over the last 20 years the mansion has remained completely untouched but the roof has now begun to fail, there are walls collapsing and the bugs and raccoons have completely taken over the house since and it will never be lived in again!

There is also a full video tour of this location if you are interested!!

And finally we take a peak at the family room, living room and the staircase!!
This week's home is a side-split and was likely built in the 50s or around that time. It's a great example of the type of homes that were original to the neighbourhood when it was first established. Sadly due to the plot sizes, the scarcity of undeveloped land, its proximity to the lake and a change in the way people value the "things" in their lives, it along with the rest are slowly disappearing. They are being replaced with much larger mansion style homes often lacking in character and architectural design principles. Pretty soon the whole neighbourhood will be filled with large soulless mansions with Teslas and Maseratis parked in front of their 4 car garages.

The Movie Director's Mansion
Don't forget about the video, it also gives more information about the home's history!!
youtube
Sitting within the rainforest and above a towering cliff overlooking the ocean, lies this long abandoned mansion.
Originally built in 1926 and designed by architect Percy Leonard James, who was also responsible for other significant buildings in the area.
In 1998 the home was sold to director John Lee Thompson and his wife Penny.
Ten years later the mansion and large property were sold to an undisclosed foreign buyer.
More recently, the home has become heavily vandalised, covered in graffiti, with walls completely demolished and all of the bathroom fixtures tossed and destroyed. Sadly, demolition is the likely future fate of this once prominent house.
