The Fresh Art Fair Private View was in full swing this evening at Cheltenham Racecourse. I have a selection of work on stand 21 with Little Buckland Gallery. If you’re in the area and fancy having a look around DM me for free tickets. The fair runs daily until Sunday evening.

Mycenae II (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
Following on from previous works, Mycenae II continues the use of black and off-white bands set an equal distance apart but also uses a two-tone approach to the black. There’s a thin layer and a stain over a previous black layer which shows as a blue/grey finish under the final coat.

Broken Windows (2024), acrylic on canvas 150 x 90cm.
There’s so much going on under the surface in this painting. Not only are there many layers all referring to the previous one laid down, there are about five or six points at which I could have finished and they would have all looked very different from each other. One of the many things I enjoy in my painting process is the serendipitous way they come together.

Harbour (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
Another small painting exploring the single black band across a multi-layered, off-white ground. The title is really only due to the poetic sound of the word which matches the feeling I get from this piece.

Mycenae (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
As shown with my Harmonics series, I like to explore bands of black tightly pushed up against one another and the effect it has. This little piece follows in a similar vein but has more space between the bands. I couldn’t get Ancient Greek pottery out of my head having completed this, hence the name.

Early Morning Quiet (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
“almost dawn
blackbirds on the telephone wire
waiting
as I eat yesterday’s
forgotten sandwich
at 6 a.m.
on a quiet Sunday morning.
one shoe in the corner
standing upright
the other laying on it’s
side.
yes, some lives were made to be
wasted.”

Break (2023), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
My final painting of 2023. This one had some details in from early on in the process that I was keen to keep in. The rest of the painting followed on from there.

Tomorrow Morning (2023), acrylic on canvas 40 x 30cm.
Another small one following on from my previous post, ‘Italian Operas’. Reduced this one even more. Bare-bones almost.

Italian Operas (2023), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
This is the smallest painting I’ve produced for a few years and I have a few more underway at the moment. Really enjoying the intimacy of working on such a small scale.

Five Six (2023), acrylic on canvas 80 x 80cm.
I tend to think of these as ‘inverted’ pictures: Forms that I could have painted black but instead worked in a reductive way (from an off-white starting point to a largely black finish) until the forms emerge and the painting largely completes itself. At a certain point the main motifs emerge and I can then add white or remove black until the image works. I’m finding it quite a satisfying way to paint.
