// This is a post from my personal blog, where I vented about Eobard Thawne’s character arc over the years and how I feel he’s declined in quality and why.

Honestly, that is probably a large part of why I lost all the passion for Thawne and stopped updating this blog. (Though, I’m pretty bad at keeping up with ALL my blogs so that’s a factor too).

If interest in this blog allows for me to start running it again, I’ll definitely be dipping into the vibe of those earlier seasons. I’ve SEEN his appearances in later seasons and will definitely be factoring those into my personal history and headcanon for the character, but I may... tweak them a bit as I see fit. Three-dimensional, angsty Thawne is best Thawne!

For a very long time, I LOVED Eobard Thawne in The CW’s Flash TV series. I mean, I still love him, but… hoo boy his characterization has been shaky over the show’s 8 seasons. Excuse me for a minute while I rant about the downfall of one of my favorite characters ever under the cut. Watch out for spoilers.

            As far as he could figure, it had been about a day since he’d been taken. He’d returned to a crime scene for a Meta case they were working on, going by himself to see if there was anything new he could discover about who they were looking for, when someone had knocked him out from behind. Looking back, although the crime hadn’t even been remotely speedster-related, it had all the makings of a trap. Something to lure him out alone. He just couldn’t figure out why. 

            He hadn’t seen the Reverse-Flash in over a year. Guess he was overdo for a good mind screw, but still — kidnapping? He’d thought the other man was done with this.

            Pale fingers lifted to fiddle uncomfortably with the dampener collar fastened around his throat, and frowning at the takeout bag that had been thrust into the cage. Big Belly Burger, that figured. Did he not eat anything else? Regardless, Barry didn’t exactly have an appetite at the moment, even if he hadn’t eaten all day. “ I’m surprised, normally you just settle for hurting the people I care about instead of coming after me directly. Decided to cut out the middle man finally? ” 

            It was still hard to look at him, even knowing the whole Dr. Wells thing had been an act, it still hurt after all these years. This was the guy who’d been his mentor, his friend, someone he’d admired for nearly half of his life and had developed extremely very feelings for, ones that never completely went away. The betrayal still ached in him every time he encountered the guy.

He’d been so close!!!

After centuries of endless battle against his nemesis, he finally had the perfect shot. Sure, luring him into a fake crime scene to attack him from behind was hardly an ingenious plan, but sometimes simple was the best way to go. He’d done so many elaborate, personal, torturous schemes, and they all dealt their share of emotional trauma on Barry Allen’s life, but this... The self-righteous hero of Central City could be dead now.

Only, the Reverse-Flash couldn’t bring himself to deal the final blow. He hit the heroic speedster over the head, knocked him out, but when he went to tear his heart out.... he hesitated.

Thawne threw the take-out bag into Barry’s cage with a look of conflict and disgust, quickly turning away from his captive. What did he want from Barry at this point? He was fully capable of returning home - or anywhere in time, really - on his own now, he clearly couldn’t bring himself to kill his enemy... so what came next?

“In due time, Mr. Allen,” the man spoke softly, crossing his arms as he continued facing away from the young man in his cage. “You and I, we’ve been fighting this war for far too long, longer than you’ll ever realize. I’ve gone after people you love, hurt you irreversibly, made my mark on your world, just as you’ve made your mark on mine. Over and over and over. Perhaps,” he offered with a shrug, finally turning around to face the Flash with a smirk, “I just want to enjoy this for a while.”

I’m well aware of my feelings for Mr. Allen, and have expressed my love for him numerous times. It doesn’t make any difference, though, because - wait for it - we’re destined to be the greatest of enemies. If that still bores you, perhaps you should seek out a different form of entertainment.”
