Slight departure from the Yotsuba theme but do you think that Light Yagami was corrupted by the Death Note or always had the capacity for evil?
i guess it depends what you mean by "corrupted by the death note"? i don't think the notebook has any sort of supernatural quality that makes the user Become Evil, if that's what you mean. rather, the power to kill people, especially so easily and with so few direct consequences for the killer, is inherently dangerous. as the saying goes, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely; every human has the capacity for evil, and few things bring that out more than the power to kill like what the death note gives.
i don't think pre-kira light is particularly evil, though, so much as he's got a bad case of Upper-Middle Class Boy Whose Father Is A Cop Syndrome, which is taken to its extreme in death note proper.

It's a unique type of frustration when you agree that a character is deeply flawed but other people keep missing what's actually wrong with them and assigning them new flaws that they don't even have it's like free my man he did none of that. He did a bunch of other shit tho.

I find Namikawa as a character very interesting but have always wondered the reasoning behind his behaviour. Do you think he acts that way for personal reasons i.e. he cares about his appearance/reputation, he acts like that due to external influences, for example the fact that he is born into money and has a specific act that needs to be upheld or a combination of both? (Longwinded-ish, sorry).
i think it's a combination of all these things!
at his core, namikawa is an ambitious person who desires success above all else. i imagine he developed this trait from a young age, being the son of a rich family led by a very successful businessman. unlike some of his peers, though, this idea of life as a corporate exec was never something he struggled with; i think namikawa always intended to go into business and has never regretted it for a second.
i personally headcanon that part of the reason for namikawa's ambition is the way he viewed his parents at a young age. my thoughts are that his father, despite having the external appearance of a traditional family patriarch, was always really subservient to his mother, and his mother took advantage of this in ways that were at times cruel (like having affairs right under his nose). this led namikawa to foster some contempt for his father for being so easily led, and deep down i think he'd like to surpass his father's position since he views his father as unworthy of his status and reiji needs to "correct" this.
his parents' relationship also led namikawa to view people in a binary: you're either the type of person who uses others or the type of person who is used. there is nothing more loathsome and pathetic than belonging to the latter category, so he does as much as he can to belong to the former. i don't think he's excessively manipulative for the sake of it or anything like that, but he's very concerned with staying on/getting to the top and being in control. (...well, maybe he does enjoy manipulating other people sometimes, but he doesn't usually indulge it in significant ways unless it's serving a greater purpose.)
...ok, moving back away from my namikawa family headcanons. reiji's primary motivation is to be as successful as possible, and so he has to be the type of person who will be successful: talented, intelligent, well-spoken, unrevealing, polite but detached enough to be somewhat intimidating. his behaviors and track record must demand that he is listened to and respected, so they do. in this world, his reputation and image are important, and so is upholding his family's name.
so yes, his behavior as the seemingly perfect, talented business exec is purposeful and done in order to maintain a certain reputation and image, part of which is the image of a good son. both of these are necessary for his general goals. namikawa is concerned with others' opinions of him only to the end that they impact his own prospects; on a personal level, i really don't think he cares what people think about him. if someone perceived him as stupid or weak or useless or what have you, it would upset him (probably by way of annoyance, depending on who it is), but it wouldn't impact his own self-image or anything.
speaking of self-image, i think the line is blurry for namikawa between how many of his behaviors are put-on and how many are genuine. the talented businessman character is so much of who he is that i think even when he's alone or in private, he just acts like that (although he still treats, say, his family differently from a business associate). he decided who he wanted to be, and then he became that person. there is no other namikawa.
(and don't apologize, i'm always happy to get yotsuba asks of absolutely any length!)

Which voices do you think suit each Yotsuba better out of the Japanese and English dub?
honestly, i am not a big fan of most the yotsuba english dub voices. i think they're all serviceable, but not particularly fitting.
higuchi's english voice actor does an amazing job and i love the behind the scenes interview with him; you can really tell he has a good grasp on higuchi's character. i also think mido's voice is really fitting, and i actually have a picture signed by her voice actor!
other than those two, i can take or leave pretty much all the english voices. none of them really land with me, but i don't hate them. ted cole's namikawa is hilarious, though. i will always be fond of english namikawa. he's somehow just too smug, and it's comical to me.
as for the japanese voices, i think they're all pretty good. i'm not really attached to any of them? i generally listen to the original japanese over the english dub, but i read the manga way more than i watch the anime in general, so i don't listen to the japanese dub that much either at the end of the day.
when i first watched dn in fifth grade, it was the english dub that i watched, so i've got a bit of a nostalgic attachment to it. this isn't really the case for the japanese dub, so while i definitely think light, for example, has stellar voice acting, my thoughts aren't really nuanced. i do like mido's voice in particular, though. mido just has a good track record with voice acting. other than that, none of them stick out to me, but i'd say they're generally fine interpretations of the characters.
if i had to choose, i'd pick english higuchi and mido, japanese namikawa for a serious choice and english namikawa for fun, and japanese everyone else.

what are your thoughts on higuchi x takahashi?
this can be from a canonical standpoint, a best case scenario standpoint or both
higuchi and takahashi as a ship is something i've thrown around before, but it's not something i'm into in canon. i think the main scenario i used to ship them in was a high school AU i had with my boyfriend and another friend of mine, but that's pretty far-removed from canon and i haven't thought about it in, like... years at this point. i think there was a point before that where i shipped them in canon, but i shipped just about every yotsuba ship at that point and i don't remember any nuanced thoughts on it...
canonically, though, you can boil their relationship down to "higuchi bullies takahashi". sometimes when higuchi picks on someone, he's got deeper reasons for it, like his jealousy of namikawa or shimura's suspicions being a potential danger to higuchi's aspirations. with shimura, he also just picks on him because he's an easy target... and that's the entire reason he bullies takahashi.
there really isn't that much more to it; higuchi wants to feel better about himself, takahashi seems like an idiot, higuchi is going to treat him like shit for it. i'm always a fan of "higuchi is attracted to another man and mad about it so he treats them like shit", and you could definitely work that in there, but i tend to use namikawa, shimura, or even hatori for that.
on takahashi's end, i think he just resents higuchi. all this guy does is make it a point to insult him, and while being pretty mediocre himself, no less. takahashi is a pretty big doormat, though, so he's never going to fight back; his response is always to look annoyed and then not say anything.
i enjoy shipping higuchi with shimura partially because shimura, as we've seen in canon, after enduring enough abuse, eventually turns around and does something about it. takahashi is just too passive for that, though, even under dire circumstances, so any relationship between him and higuchi would just be miserable for him... it's not something i personally find compelling, but if someone else has a take on it, i'm all ears.
