☄ - Fear headcanon - the OG Star Wolf boys
FEAR AND SOME TOUGH BOIS.
Wolf O’Donnell -- He has the fear of dying without fulfillment.  It seems incredibly sentimental for a space pirate like him but he honestly fears a meaningless death.  One where he felt like he never really got to spit in the faces of those who spat on him.  He’s been in more life-or-death situations than he can count and sure, he’s afraid of dying in the same sense that everyone else is.  But he’s fueled more or less by petty revenge.  He wants people that hurt him before to burn.  He wants to die without regrets, without feeling like he left things unresolved.
Leon Powalski -- Leon is afraid of having no purpose.  Coming from a society where your purpose and your capabilities earned you respect or even sometimes a place at the dinner table, Leon is mortified at the thought that one day, he may have no purpose and no one to give him orders.  He doesn’t want to live a life with no goals, no road forward.  The idea of wasting away aimlessly terrifies him.  He clings onto the role of a follower for this reason-- they can give him a purpose, a reason to wake up in the morning.
Pigma Dengar -- Pigma is afraid of dying, although perhaps more so than the average person.  He knows it’s an inevitable outcome but he does his best to dance around it.  Because he’s one of the most wanted criminals in the Lylat System, he knows he’s painted a target on his back.  So everything to him is sort of a game-- keep surviving, no matter what.
Andrew Oikonny -- Andrew is afraid of being powerless.  When he was a young child, his father was abusive-- something that left some lasting mental trauma early into his childhood.  He would feel powerless as his father hurt him and his mother.  When eventually the cops were called on his dad and he was hauled away to jail, Andrew remembered feeling joy... joy over something that shouldn’t have been joyful.  His uncle moved in to help around the house.  And everything was great.  Until his uncle was arrested for the death of Vixy Reinard.  And as Andrew watched them drag him away, he felt that same sense of powerlessness.  Because of his relationship to Andross, Andrew struggled to find his place in Cornerian society.  He was harassed and bullied-- nearly to the point where he dropped out of school, despite being in the top five of his class.  It seemed like no matter how hard he tried, he was powerless and could not rise above the label the others had given him.  Years later, when it became known Andross was alive on Venom and building his own society, Andrew was compelled to leave Corneria to join him.  Corneria and everything that had happened there just reminded him of how unfair life was and how powerless he had been.  On Venom, he knew that he could rebuild himself.  He could become stronger-- the successor his uncle needed.  And then he would never be powerless again.

Favorite Villains - Wolf O’Donnell (Star Fox)
Tumblr media
It may not be as famous or influential as Mario or Zelda, but I have a lot of love for the Star Fox series. The dog fights piloted by dogs and other animals have a lot of charm and they’re just a blast to play. Plus they have one of the funnest rivals a video game has set a player against, Wolf O’Donnell and the Star Wolf team. Wolf makes his first appearance somewhat spontaneously in the midst of Star Fox 64, interrupting your missions now and then as a sub-boss of sorts, on the dollar of SF64’s true villain, Andross. You didn’t know much about them before they swooped in and started taunting you, the only real cue being Fox’s exasperated reaction, “Just who I needed to see; Star Wolf.” which despite seeming sort of rushed, I kind of love the exposition of. Just from this small interaction you immediately take in that this isn’t the first party Team Star Wolf has crashed and that they have a long and bitter history with Star Fox.
Much of Wolf’s appeal lies with his entourage, perfect foils to Fox’s team one for one. Rivaling the hotheaded Falco is the refined Leon Powalski, the reptilian right hand to Wolf. Peppy faces a ghost of his past in the form of Pigma Dengar, the avaricious former Star Fox member who sold Fox’s father, James McCloud out to Andross, causing his death, and Andrew Oikonny, the youngest of Star Wolf, is the nephew of Andross himself and rivals the equally green Slippy Toad. The way the dynamic equals out makes Team Star Wolf incredibly memorable and adds to their own relevance as well as that of Fox’s own team. A lot of the game, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy kinda just babble in your ear and provide occasional moral support--but the introduction of Star Wolf gives them their own demon to face. In addition to Fox and Wolf having their old animosity, Leon’s condescension, Andrew’s bullying, and Pigma’s toxic taunting give Team star Fox something besides money and a mission to fight for, and that makes those particular battles with Star Wolf the most memorable and cathartic to win out. What’s most interesting about Wolf is how despite working for Andross, he has really no connection outside of employment. Wolf doesn’t care if Andross achieves his goals, he’s only really accepting yet another job that he knows comes with a chance to outdo his rival, Star Fox. There’s no power or loyalty in it for Wolf, he’s just lost to Fox too many times to him finish a mission in peace. That said, Wolf would sooner give his own life before allowing someone besides himself kill Fox. As proven by when he put his neck on the line to stop the Aparoid’s final invasion, if anyone is gonna skin Fox, it’s gonna be Wolf.
With this in mind there’s a bizarre pragmatism mixed with a surprising passion there in Wolf. Between SF64 and Assault, Wolf dismissed Pigma and Andrew from his team--the former for his detrimental greed and the latter for having a clear loyalty to Andross over Wolf himself. Both were replaced by newcomer Panther Caruso, a ladies man (cat?), but most notably, no matter how much he shakes up the Star Wolf team, he keeps Leon close to himself as the second Star Wolf member. Their bond is a bit unspoken, but no matter how standoffish either one seems neither acts toxic to one another. There’s even an instance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl where you can trigger conversations from other Star Fox characters (a la Snake’s Codecs or Palutena’s guidance) playing as Fox, Falco, or Wolf on the Lylat stage--and Leon is so impressed by Wolf’s physical fighting prowess that he gets carried away admirably gushing about it to Panther’s utter bewilderment. Although neither would ever admit it, I think Wolf and Leon have a rather genuine kinship. Speaking of Smash, similar to King K. Rool, Wolf is able to explore elements of himself in battle that he never could in his source games. Like a pro-wrestler he lets out a seemingly trademark howl in battle that the fourth wall crowd even imitates for his character chant. He’s notably willing to get his hands dirty in battle, utilizing his claws and alike dirty tactics, which reflects his history as a space pirate as opposed to Fox and Falco’s more formal military combat.
Wolf’s dedication to money and himself mirrors Fox, who is indeed a mercenary for money but one of honor and takes jobs from the Cornerian military. It kinda makes one question where the line is for “good mercenary work”, the fact that Fox and Wolf both hail from such similar lines of work is poetic enough to make one question the ethics of destroying monkey satellites en masse. Even with that in mind, Wolf is almost an unconventional teacher figure to Fox too. The Aparoids, parasitic aliens that take over host bodies and make them into weapons of mass destruction, eventually got a hold of one of Fox’s most trusted friends, General Pepper. Fox expresses that he isn’t sure he could ever strike down someone with the face of a friend, but Wolf gives Fox the advice he needs; to not hesitate when the time comes. Coming from a more treacherous line of pilots than Fox, Wolf has probably had to remind himself of this more than once.
And while I rarely allow fanworks to super push my opinions on a character on the scale of this one, a big thing that pushed Wolf from “childhood nostalgia favorite” to “current love” for me is the parody Youtube series, “A Fox In Space”; although I feel calling it a parody series is almost a disservice, at least with the meaning the word ‘parody’ tends to convey presently. A Fox in Space almost feels more like a full scale adaption that has a good sense of humor. They’re some of the best original animation I’ve ever seen on Youtube with writing that feels organic and animation that rivals some TV shows in my book. Wry, yet still feeling halfway serious, and with an incredibly distinct old timey aesthetic and feel that I adore, it fleshes out the whole cast of the universe, including Wolf. We see more of Wolf’s interactions with Andross’ Venomian soldiers, the latter of whom resent Wolf as they take his orders, knowing he’s only below Andross on the totem pole and more so for his piloting skills than his loyalty (or lack thereof). He’s usually left with the only choice to flash facetious and phony smiles with his razor sharp teeth when he’s under pressure, and yet he has to do very little besides this to remain in safe keeping because he really is the only one capable of matching Fox in battle. We also learn that Wolf grew up under the roof of a boozing father, who was himself an alternative to a mother called ‘crazy’ by her husband. Wolf was romantically involved with Fara Phoenix, daughter of a Cornerian politician. This gave a young Wolf a difficult complex; feeling his only identity was wrought from rebellion under the eye of his controlling father, which in turn made him feel like a troublemaker, unworthy of being in the public eye, romantically involved with a daughter of politics. Considering canon materials have remarked Fara as Fox’s girlfriend, something tells me their rivalry began here at some point (AND THIS IS ALL STILL FROM WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY ANIMATED STAR FOX FANFICTION AND IT’S BEEN ACCEPTED BY ME AS JUST CANON I DON’T EVEN QUESTION IT ANYMORE). Wolf has never been Star Fox’s main villain, but he’s always been one of my favorite aspects of that universe. For such a simple idea for a rival bad guy, he’s a bit deep, with a memorable motif, voice, and dynamic with just about every character he comes across--the kind that leaves me hungry (like the wolf, ahycuk) for more content surrounding him.

“ 🔥 “
[ Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion. | Accepting! ]
Pigma Dengar by far is the best character of the Star Fox series and he has the most potential as a dynamic, intelligent, and entertaining antagonist.
Most people don’t like Pigma for good reason for his treachery, but often time that hatred blinds them to the point they can’t see any potential with him as an antagonist, instead choosing to write him out of the story swiftly rather than invest in him as a genuinely interesting character.
They choose to instead focus on the body count or how much damage an antagonist can do rather than what they can bring to the table in terms of investment, style, dynamic, and personality.
Pigma is incredibly fun and should be used more.

Part V: Defeat
“So much for hittin’ it big... hreheh, what a waste of time...”
Pigma trudged slowly back to his ship, his steps ever heavier, ever slower as he does. The only sound breaking the silence was the labored breathing of the old swine as he carried himself in defeat. All the while, the aliens continued to clamor and swarm around, ever following the pig as he drifted. He kept glancing down at the artifact he had. He KNEW it was looking at him now. He could feel its imaginary eyes staring right into his soul. He heaved for breath as he kept trudging along, unheard voices whispering in his mind, their words less a speech and more a scratching, skittering noise. It was comparable to a dead audio input, or a droning white noise.
“That... damn noise... have to be imagining it... gyah, get out of my damn head...!”
Pigma muttered to himself feverishly as he pushed himself along, the fatigue of the walk taking its toll on his unhealthy body. He gasped for air, the glass in his helmet fogging as he breathed. In the near distance, he saw a faint light - the light of the stars outside, glowing faintly and illuminating his ship. Almost there. He just needs to reach his ship, and then... he wasn’t sure what next. He had no one left to turn to. Star Fox would be on his trail soon too, and they would find him here. Even if these damned aliens defeated them, what good would it do HIM? He can’t sell the artifact. He can’t use it to push an advantage - he had no advantage. It was clear to him now that these things have an agenda of their own. They’re intelligent, or at least share an intelligence. He was a fool for trying to use them, he realizes that now, but it was too late to go back. They were attached to him. Attached to the artifact.
“Hroohreh... guess my luck never really turned around at all.... s’whole mess has jus’ been.... one misstep after another... jokes on you, Pigma, yer the biggest sucker in the Lylat system now... hrah hrah hreh....”
Pigma clamored into his space craft weakly. The noise was unbearable now, and it continued to intensify and deafen him. The insects were all staring at him, judging him. Damn them. Damn them ALL! How dare they?! What do they know?! Know of what Pigma has done!? What he did to.... James McCloud. To Peppy Hare. To Wolf O’Donnell. To Andrew Oikonny. What. Did. They. Know. NOTHING! Pigma sneered at them all, gnashing his teeth furiously as he closed the hatch of his ship and departed from the landing pad with a rumbling of his ship’s rockets. The old swine winced his eyes, light tears rolling down his fat wrinkled cheeks. The isolation was unbearable. The loneliness was crushing. The loneliness that he caused, that he brought upon himself. He could lie to himself about it no longer... because he had no one left to lie to.
“Dammit! Dammit, Pep! Jim! I’m sorry.... Lylat’s stars, I’m sorry... Wolf... you were right to hate me. I never deserved your respect.... Andrew.... gyuh.... you stupid kid! You’re probably dead! I were s’posed to watch yer ass... I never wanted ya to die... dammit.... dammit! Damn me!”
He sobbed lightly to himself. His whole life, he had pushed people away from him, and now that he had none left to push away, did he feel the true weight of loneliness. The aliens could feel it. Sensed it. Fed on it. They whispered to Pigma, in his despair. The noise now became words.
“Join us”, it says. “Join us as one flesh. Let us be together. Together as one.”
Pigma strained to block it out. He didn’t want to hear it. He stares down at the artifact, knowing it is calling to them. Knowing it is trying to get inside his head. It IS inside his head. He can feel every word like a spider’s leg crawling inside his skull, creeping through his mind.
“It is incredible. Your flesh will become our flesh. Our greatness will be your greatness. One mind. One Body. You must join us. Must.”
The pig could take it no longer. He reached down to grab the artifact so he may jettison it out of his craft and be rid of it... and that was when Pigma realized, he no longer had a right arm. At least, not what he recognized as an arm. It was elongated, twisted. It glowed dully with faint greens and blues, his fingers and hand now more of an indiscernible mass of flesh and machinery. The artifact glowed a bright, hellish red, the swine’s eyes went wider and beadier than they ever had before in his life. It was already changing him. It already had him. It was too late for him to escape.
“.... looks.... like... my jig is up then.... to hell with these bastards. I won’t let them take me... Pigma Dengar ain’t no one’s fool.... but my own....!”
Pigma’s ship drifted past the station as he counted his options. The aliens followed, and the pig knew he had but only one choice to try and save himself from their swarm. He stared at the stars surrounding him in all directions. Long gone where the asteroids. There wasn’t a planet or moon in sight. It was almost peaceful. The pig closed his eyes, it reminded him of younger days on Papetoon, staring up at the night sky with his friends, dreaming of a life in space. He was ready. It would only hurt for a moment. Using his free hand, Pigma unbuckled himself from his seat, and shakily reached for the control of his ship’s canopy. He opened his cockpit to the vacuum of space.
It only hurt for a moment. Then, he felt nothing at all, as the old pig drifted lifelessly out into space.
“Good bye, Lylat...”

Star Fox 2, Star Wolf Character Description Analysis
Star Fox 2 has been a mystery to the fans for years and even though the game was formally released recently, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the game.  Fortunately, though, with it’s release we’ve gotten more information on some of the character iterations within the game.  I was recently shown the Star Wolf character descriptions on a Discord server this last week and thought I’d share my thoughts/observations.
Tumblr media
Wolf O’Donnell -- As it was pointed out to me by @androsswannabe, Wolf’s description is actually very similar to what we know of Pigma in the later games.  This makes me wonder if we were supposed to get any form of dialogue at some point about Wolf formerly being part of the Cornerian Army, or maybe even a friend of James’s.  Who knows, really, it’s all speculation at this point but I do find it interesting they chose to talk about his weak loyalty out of everything.  I find a lot of Wolf in SF2 to be really inspiring for Wolf’s attire later in the series.  Particularly his spiky shoulder pad motif that definitely carries on in Star Fox Assault and Command (and even into spin-offs like the Super Smash Bros series). Obviously his scarred eye was replaced for an eyepatch on the other eye later on and his coloration was changed have less of a fade between the white and grey.  Note the yellow sclera of his eyes.  Kind of glad that went away in later games.
Tumblr media
Leon Powalski -- I find Leon’s one-liner to be arguably the most interesting out of the four members of the Star Wolf team.  We know later on that Leon is meant to be Venomian (at least, according to Starlink).  I wonder if this is to imply that Cornerians view Venomians as “aliens”, which seems... kind of dehumanizing (as dehumanizing as you can get when referring to space animals, that is).  I actually had a dumb moment and forgot what the word “inscrutable” meant (because I thought it meant “cruel”) and that only added to the enigma, if I’m honestly.  According to a quick Google search, it means “impossible to understand or interpret” which feels incredibly ambiguous.  Is it hard to understand him because of his sinister mentality? Or is it hard to understand because he’s an “alien”?  Is... Is Leon supposed to have a thick accent or maybe speak in another language?
Tumblr media
Pigma Dengar -- Much like Wolf’s description, Pigma’s seems misplaced-- to the point in which I wonder if Wolf and Pigma’s characterizations just got reversed at some point in SF64′s development.  While I would agree that Pigma is arrogant and cruel, I feel as though these words really wouldn’t be anyone’s first picks when they go to describe what they know of Pigma later in the games.  However, it is important to note that this iteration of Pigma has nothing to do with James’s disappearance and never was part of the Star Fox team (that we know of, I guess).  I find most interesting that they say he’s incredibly strong, which I had kind of headcanonned anyways, but that sort of confirmation made me feel good.
Tumblr media
Algy -- What I find the most interesting about Algy’s description is that it’s definitely the longest of the four but he’s the character that got scrapped.  His description seems to imply he’s an underhanded character who resorts to whatever lowblows he has to in order to win.  Which, I really think you can argue about any of the Star Wolf characters, but considering Nintendo is choosing these statements to highlight their most prominent features, I find it interesting.  The way the description reads makes me think he’s good at analysis -- which would pit him up nicely against Slippy as a rival.  Another random note about Algy: Even after they had the chance to formally give him a last name, they didn’t.  And in later concept art shown for SF2, he’s absent entirely in favor of Andrew.  Poor Algy.  Maybe one day we’ll see him and his deviousness again.

Part VI: Unrest
“It’ll.... only hurt for a moment...”
Those were Pigma Dengar’s last thoughts as he made the decision to end his own life rather than face whatever fate the alien insect machines had in store for him. As his body was exposed to the vacuum of space, he felt his whole body depressurizing in an instant. The pain was overbearing, but brief, as the air from his lungs was pulled right from his breath, the pull of space tugging him out from his ship. Lifelessly, he floated from the meteo zone... but the aliens were not done with the deceased pig yet.
“Incredible! You must join us...!!”
The aliens swarmed over the swine’s body. They bit into him, grabbing hold of him and bringing him towards a large, floating mass of metal that had become detached from the space station nearby. They perverted his body, making him part of them, and them a part of he. Pigma was gone, but they still needed him. Another brought forth the artifact, implanting it into the pig’s unbeating heart, replacing its muscle and blood with machine. He was reborn as something not himself.
“We will answer. We are the ultimate existence. You will join us.”
Star Fox eventually came to face Pigma, only to find his monstrous, mutated self instead. As his body was wholly consumed by the Gorgon-like machine that made up his new form, Pigma became the voice by which the aliens spoke through. Undaunted by their taunts, the heroic team did battle with the alien menace, and destroyed the machine which Pigma had become part of. The perversion of his body was finished. He should have been granted true peace in death. He was not.
“Hrrrnhrnnnhrnnn.... what... have... I... become...?!”
The destroyed ruin of Pigma’s monstrosity form drifted through space for months untouched. Robbed of the alien artifact and badly damaged, it was just a gravestone for Lylat’s most wanted criminal. Yet, the alien influence remained. When their invasion was stopped, and their species destroyed, their taint on Pigma was released in full... but not as Pigma had expected. He awoke suddenly, bodyless, helpless, drifting through the void alone. Where was he?! WHAT was he?! He looked around - but he had no eyes. He felt around - but he had no body. He was neither alive nor dead, a spirit trapped in the mortal veil of outer space. There was no rest for the old man.
“This.... can’t be.... how I go... I just... can’t...”
Deep in space, the tormented spirit drifted in flux. It grew and festered, its energy causing magnetic storms and radiation disturbances in the sectors. None could understand it, none could explain it. Pigma’s hate reached out to the farthest reaches of Lylat. It was calling out to people. They did not know it, but this restless spirit needed them. One by one, they sensed a drawing to this region of space, despite the risks and known dangers... for what reason, they did not know yet, but it could not be left alone. Would their curiosity be stated? Or would the spirit of Pigma be left to linger still in deep space...
“Hrhph hrph hrph... my fire... still burns strong...”
