OK YEAH I completely forgot to post these!! A handful of my StarFox OCs. Maybe you recognize them? In order, they are: Petal, Geneva Shepherd, Izzy Dynamo, and Jast Todon.
As a refresher (or maybe an intro?):
Petal is an Aparoid made of Killer Bee and Borzoi fighter scrap metal. She was stationed on Katina, but lost all direction when the Aparoid Queen was killed. This event was fatal to most of the Aparoids, but as demonstrated by Pigma, some of them found a way to survive. Petal was one of them; her will was too strong to allow herself to die so soon. She would lay low and hide out of sight as to not be spotted by Cornerian soldiers, but was eventually discovered by Bill Grey. Rather than killing her, he took pity on her and let her live and integrate into society. She has no voice of her own and mimics other Lylatians’ voices to communicate. Since she spends most time around Bill, she sounds almost exactly like him.
Geneva Shepherd is a Cornerian-born German shepherd scientist affiliated with Andross’s empire and Venom. She views Venom’s rules as more freeing than Corneria, latching onto Venom’s side early into Oikonny’s rebellion; she was far too young to fight during the Lylat Wars. She runs a farcical Bioweapon rehabilitation program under the guise of benefiting the Cornerian government, but truthfully her program is a testing ground for her ultimate experiment: cloning Andross to revive him from the dead.
Izzy Dynamo is a Venomian frilled lizard mechanic. In his youth, though he was too young to fly a starship, he would help repair broken fighter ships alongside an older brother he lost to the Lylat Wars. He saw all Venom’s casualties as senseless and brutal, sympathizing with the remaining lieutenants who had lost many of their friends to the same war. He harbors a deep-seeded hatred for Corneria, but fears he is too weak to fight them himself. So, he made it his goal to unite Venom once more and pick up the pieces Star Fox tore out of the former empire. He teamed up with Geneva to covertly sew distrust and unrest among Corneria’s population.
Jast Todon is a hybrid—half sharpclaw half salamander—born in Sauria. As a non-dinosaur in a dinosaur world, he’d always feel inadequate and unwelcome for being “too soft”, especially among Sharpclaws. He didn’t even have clawed hands, how could he fit in, he thought. So as soon as interstellar travel was established between Sauria and the Lylat System, he left his home behind to start anew in Corneria. However, there, he began to experience the opposite problem. Suddenly he was dubbed “scary” and “beastly” by the denizens of the planet. No matter where Jast was, he felt alienated. He joined Andrew’s cause late into the rebellion and was assigned to Geneva and Izzy’s team as a bodyguard. He felt somewhat better about it, but still out of place in a way. He doesn’t care much for war or revenge, and just wants to meet someone who understands him completely.
Ok that was a lot!! I have been thinking abt these guys a lot lol. Hope you like them!

Spooky SF Headcanons
Happy Spoopy Day~  Hope everyone is well.  I thought I could celebrate on here with some spooky headcanons!
Venom
Venom is considered to be a haunted, cursed place. There are remnants of several civilizations scattered across the planet, the most prominent being the ancient Cornerus and the far more recent failed Cornerian Settlement Project.
Not much is known about the Cornerus or what happened to them but their ruins still haunt Venom’s eerie landscape. There are rumors of ghosts that dwell within, wailing in a state of perpetual limbo with eyes that can invoke madness.  Usually these ghosts do not stray far from the old Cornerus cities but occasionally there have been sightings in the jungles.  Most sightings are usually laughed off fearfully-- people don’t want to admit there might be a nugget of truth to any of these rumors but the amount of people who have seen something paranormal in the wilds is incredibly high.
The Cornerian Settlement Project happened quite some time before the Lylat Wars, before even the time of James McCloud, Peppy Hare, and General Pepper.  The project was a colonization effort to start a third planetary hub that would function as a center of trade with planets further from Corneria, such as Sauria and Cerinia.  Back then, Venom had a different name, tentatively called “Eden”, though that name was quickly nixed after the Settlement Project.  Although some experts had already scoped Venom out and had reported high levels of toxins in the air, most of those reports were dismissed by settlers.  The sight that followed the settlers arriving was allegedly one so traumatic that the survivors immediately ran back onto the ships in horror.  As soon as the first group arrived, over half their number dropped dead on boarding ramp, their lungs clotted with airborne poisons.  The survivors wished to leave but eventually did decide to settle the proposed colony area on Venom.  However, within two years, the colony was abandoned, even after measures were taken to try to purify the air.  It is said that not only did the air make it hard to populate the land but there was an unnatural force that pushed the Cornerians out-- a force no one could see but could feel.  A force that would dismantle bits of their infrastructure and haunt their government officials at night.  After the Project failed, the planet’s name was switched to Venom and it was used as a place for exile.
Of course, Venom has seen plenty of civilizations who survived the toxic atmosphere -- namely reptilians who have long made their home amid the jungles.  Though reptiles are not entirely uncommon in the Lylat System, the varieties seen on Venom were viewed with apprehension, no doubt stemming from the fact that the planet itself seemed cursed, so everything that lived there also carried that same stigma.  From these early discoveries of Venomian reptiles came legends of alien-like beasts that would thrive in the dark jungles, abducting Lylatians and feasting upon their flesh.
Fichina
Not many people would consider Fichina to be a terrifying planet-- after all, it’s home to sights such as the aurora borealis.  However its harsh climate has led to some terrifying discoveries over the years.
Fichina’s north and south pole clock the coldest temperatures in all of Lylat, however that has not stopped people from trying to live there, even those without any expertise in living in such harsh conditions.  Climate control centers dot the planet’s surface, trying to stabilize some of the weather in an attempt to play God.  However, there have been several cases of these climate control centers failing, resulting in lives being lost as entire cities are covered in blizzards.  Alternatively, heating systems connected to the climate control center have been known to occasionally fail, resulting in the worst case scenario imaginable-- entire cities frozen, its denizens inside, lifeless.
Yet despite the freezing temperatures, arctic animals often make their home on Fichina.  When Corneria arrived at first to establish peaceful negotiations with the Fichinans, they spread across the planet’s surface, even venturing out to reclusive villages up north.  One military officer reported back to Corneria with a chilling report that they had found several villages that had been infected by a sickness of some sort, turning most of their citizens (arctic wolves) into mindless creatures running berserk.  The Cornerians destroyed the village and all who were within to keep the sickness from spreading, later attributing it to something found in a local set of mines.  This report was eventually leaked to the public and twisted by media.  Over time, these barbaric, berserker wolves became something of a cryptic legend and there are claims some of them even still exist to this day.
Aquas
Though a planet that looks like a gleaming sapphire in the midst of space, Aquas is a planet drowning in a bloody history and filled with dark secrets.
It is believed that the monstrosity Bacoon destroyed the north and south poles of Aquas, flooding the continents with water.  This is a tale that has been believed by Cornerians for some time... but no one has really discovered how this was possible.  There has been some research done into this legend to ascertain the truth but no one knows for certain how the giant clam was able to do this.  There have been, however, strange shrines spotted on the ocean floor.  Shrines that bear an uncanny resemblance to shrines found on Venom and Sauria.  Did Bacoon... have help?  And if it did, what happened to that help?
After the defeat of Bacoon, Corneria opted to help the planet recover from all of the pollution Andross had dumped into its waters.  When they did, they also decided to explore the planet, scoping it out as a possible location for a colony.  The planet was perfectly fine, they believed, just covered in water-- nothing that they could not possibly work around.  However, as they searched the planet, they chose to dive into its depths.  Not only were they met with abyssal, dark waters but their scanners indicated an assortment of gargantuan things that lurked far, far below the water’s surface-- things that perhaps had not even seen the light in hundreds of years.  Although the colony project was given the greenlight, there were many scientists unsure if it should have been approved of at all.  Many beg the question if Bacoon was ever really alone down there.
Exploration into Aquas’s ruins have uncovered what may have been religious worship of Bacoon.  Worship that eventually was abandoned, resulting in the beast growing enraged.  Some of these depictions of worship include bloody sacrifices to the clam.
Eladard
Eladard’s surface is a nightmarish tangle of factories and cities, the planet’s environment completely disregarded. Eladard has become something of a junk planet, filled with graveyard-like dump sites.
Eladard’s capital city saw its fair share of strife after the planet was abandoned by wealthy Cornerians looking to profit off the planet.  The worst of its strife stemmed from its self-proclaimed mayor, who ruled the city with an iron fist and his own personal army of mobsters.  After he was dethroned and killed by mercenaries, his manor’s grounds were investigated.  Countless bodies were found on the site, some even taxidermied and kept in a trophy room.  The entire manor was burned to the ground and his body was allegedly burned with it.  The grounds now stand empty, just outside of town, charred.  Some folks have since tried to revitalize the area... but for some strange reason, nothing ever seems to grow there.  Not even grass.
Eladard’s clusters of factories have seen their fair share of work accidents.  From these accidents, occasionally there have been deaths.  And from these deaths have occasionally been ghost sightings-- usually late at night, from the graveyard shift.  Sometimes when the workers are packing up, they will swear they see their late coworkers, occasionally looking as though they are clocking in.  Other times, they can be seen across Eladard’s nightmarish landscapes, wandering about the factories aimlessly, as if they are unable to rest.
Space
Space... the final frontier some say.  But despite being beautiful, it is a silent, haunting place.
Tales of the unknown are common among pilots, particularly space-faring ones.  But one of the most haunting sights is near Sector Omega, where one of the final fights happened in the Lylat Wars.  It is said that there is a spaceship graveyard still out there, debris floating in limbo for all eternity.  It consists of both Cornerian and Venomian ships, abandoned by their respective sides and left to drift forever.
Every so often within the asteroid belt of Meteo, pilots have reported a strange portal.  Of course not many dare approach it out of fear... but a few brave souls have, plunging into the unknown fearlessly.  They disappear within and usually are found days later, sometimes on the other side of the Lylat System, babbling about strange lights and even stranger noises.  Each of them has described a world where reality is distorted and the laws of physics don’t seem to make sense.  All of their descriptions are similar with a few tweaks here and there-- moons with sneering faces, comets made of rainbows, strange random objects floating about, and strange, terrifying creatures lurking within.  Each and every account ends with the pilot being led to safety by something they can only describe as “the Whale”.  It should be noted that all of the pilots have experienced some sort of psychosis from prolonged exposure to this strange dimension and have all been needed to be hospitalized.  Cornerian officials from the CDF have looked into the matter but the findings have not been made public.

((As far as I know, there was written fight for Scales that was ever implemented in gameplay nor plans that were released publicly. With this in mind, how do you think a Scales fight would play out in gameplay terms? Or how would you make it play out?))
They were never released publicly by any official means, but dataminers and archivists have discovered and ripped several unused audio clips that somewhat demonstrate what Rare and Nintendo were planning with the Scales fight. There’s still a twist involved, but a fun one; the final showdown still would have occurred.
(Each line links to audio of each dialogue, click it, click it!!)
Tricky: Fox, Fox! Help me, I can’t move! Fox: Tricky? Tricky!! Scales: (laughs)
Scales: Fox McCloud! Will you stand and fight, or run like a coward!? Fox: Oh no... Scales: Fox McCloud: Savior of Dinosaur Planet... I feel I should be honored. Fox: It’s over, Scales! The tribes are gathering strength. You will never rule Dinosaur Planet! Scales: We shall see... But one thing is for certain: tomorrow, the Lylat System will be mourning your loss! Scales: Open fire! Falco: Hey McCloud! Still lying down on the job? Falco: Different time, different planet... And I’m still saving your butt! Good to see you, old friend! Fox: Falco?! Is that really you?! Falco: I heard about your mission and thought ya might need some help... For a small fee, of course! Falco: Now let’s kick his scaly tail! Scales: (defeat/possible Krazoa release)
Seems like two of Fox’s lines were recycled and used elsewhere in the game, and Falco’s intro was re-recorded with alternate lines and used in the final battle with Andross instead. There’s a ton of unused and alternatives that you can find at The Cutting Room Floor, they try to archive this stuff any time new things are discovered.

"My lord, my emperor?" Granga approaches the larger monkey, holding his well served glass. He didn't get too close but not that far from the emperor's, leaving his own space. He raises his glass and smile "Happy New Year, my lord. I hope you have a great year and that we can continue to fight for his dreams." ~ 🍸 [ FailedAndrosa ]
The event was a rather modest gathering; the Emperor’s impressive dining room occupied by those he had handpicked to accompany him in his celebration and liquor-stained tradition of ringing in the new year. This opposed to practically packing the area with people he’d been attempting to schmooze with: those he’d been trying to impress and convince to either join his cause--Venom’s cause--or fund it. No, this year was different. Instead of attempting to trap some poor soul into handing over his wallet so he may sponsor his insane effort of total domination of the Lylat System (and personal revenge against the Cornerian general... though of course that part has always been secret), Andross has chosen to keep it simple. No, only the individuals he fully trusted always kept close to him would be invited to his gathering.
...And their families, of course.
Tumblr media
Cadmium yellow eyes scan the dining room, wine glass in hand; the proverbial ball having dropped only short minutes ago. It wasn’t a rare opportunity to view Andross with a smile upon his striking mug, but what was rather unique was the genuine quality of his expression. This wasn’t some kind of pompous grin that reflected an unearned sense of superiority, or even some smug, close-lipped smile when he receives what he wants, when his lackeys accomplish their goals and meet his desires.
His gaze eventually leads him down, towards the owner of the voice that addressed the madman. Andross takes note of the respect that Granga offers him, the space between the two seems to shrink as the ape, in his pleased state, steps closer to his lieutenant. Large hand is quick to meet the shoulder of his most loyal and faithful follower and he gives him a friendly pat and even a playful squeeze while raising his glass in a warm response.
“And to you, my friend. Happy new year, Granga. The coming months will be kind to our war machines, our pilots and our efforts. We will provide the men and women of Venom a brighter future! Lylat will no doubt prosper under our rule and Pepper....”
Tumblr media
“Pepper’s corpse will burn.”

Character meme : Andross
Heck yeah, thanks for sending!
favorite thing about them: that emperor's beard and comb over he's got going is pretty cool. I'm also a fan of his obsessive nature; it really gets him places, though I'm not sure he ended up going in the right direction...
least favorite thing about them: I'm just going to blame Nintendo's neglect and lack of consistency once again. Everything he says makes him seem so one-dimensional too, but reading into his character is 👌💯
favorite line:
Tumblr media
brOTP: Andross and Pigma for sure
OTP: oh my god, I don't know, uH I guess Andross and his obsession with ruling the Lylat System. I have to say, obsession and persistence runs in the family.
nOTP: pass for now
random headcanon: Driving away those closest to him, family and friends, as he slowly makes his descent into madness... dramatic, I know, but all the times he's made his return? I always think it's only ever a fraction of his former self. It's so diluted to the point he does become, in fact, one-dimensional. only a single facet of who he once was. I'm going off the cloning and preservation of his mind from the old 1992 comic and the man just ain't right.
unpopular opinion: he's hot babey 🐒🔥 specifically his looks in the 1992 comic and dinosaur planet really do it for me heehee
song i associate with them: im really bad at these, i must pass;;
favorite picture of them: hm.. that panel up there was pretty good. Also, i still absolutely lose it over this pic u made, the one where he's aggressively vomitting out hearts gjsjjfjkfjsbahrog

🔥 + Star Fox Ocs
[ Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion.  | Accepting! ]
–-
I swear I answered this before. 100% I’m fine with them since Star Fox characters are simple archetypes anyway, OCs just need to build their foundations and make it strong with purpose so they don’t actually warp reality.
I’ll copy and paste it to prove my point:
Original Characters are not bad in any fandom whatsoever. While there is a constant fear and loathing of Mary Sues and Gary Stus, they’re actually kind of hard to do when you fully know the fandom source material. Original characters in the fandom are created to fit in an established canon franchise, what makes a Mary Sue/Gary Stu poor written is less of the perfection or tragic backstory. But it’s by their inclusion, that they warp reality.
They ignore canon, they usurp canon, or (in the most damning way) make characters out of character so they can fit into place. They interrupt the rules of the universe itself by not fitting in within the setting.Canon sues are super rare and hard to do, because you have to be incompetent as a writer, and if they are main characters they usually sink the whole franchise or series itself. This is why when canon sues do come around (Venus di Milo from the Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation)  they are often removed from the source.  A canon sue is hard to create if it happens – are you have to build a world around them and the rules around them most of the time. This isn’t saying you can’t break any rules, but there is very much a reason why say Tenchi from the Tenchi Muyo series is now loathed compared to what he was in the first OVA. He kept breaking the rules in his own universe to the point he’s now a god greater than the Choushin. Yeah. No. A fandom Mary Sue/Gary Stu is common because people don’t do research or find a proper place to fit the character or even get them to fit within the constraints of the universe they’re put into. A badly written shoehorned OC by any name, by any construction is what it is. A character being powerful or skilled at something does not make them a Gary Stu/Mary Sue. They are only a bad character when they obliterate any suspension of disbelief. This is why Krystal sometimes gets a lot of unearned hatred compared to say Amanda, Lucy, Beltino, and especially Panther. It’s because she doesn’t really fit the universe to the point the canon itself doesn’t know what to do with her but still keep the spot light on her.
She is not a Mary Sue per say, but she is a badly written character because she’s complex and contradicting but not giving the proper answers in a world of simple archetypes. Fox for instance, got his development in 64/Zero, his motive being defeating Andross. Krystal … didn’t get that type of development due to the fact she was aligned to being the love interest. So she never gets any catharsis. But to make her interesting, they gave her special powers that were only used in one major instant and not in the end when they should have been. (She should have been able to sense Peppy. End of story.) She was transparently only given those abilities, because we needed to get to Sauria somehow. It never comes up again. The other characters might play one note, but they play that one note well vs. the chaotic keyboard smashing of trying to figure out what to do with Krystal. ( Well, except for Dash but he has a flawed character construction and base as Krystal but different reasons but that’s a whole different story. He falls into the category he warps the entire plot to become the most important character. Krystal is a case she doesn’t fit. Both are easy fixes though, which is probably why they are going down the Zero path to reintroduce them later. )Original Characters are great and especially in a canon as open-ended as Star Fox, you can play a lot with them. It’s just a character you play closer and closer to the plot, you got to make excuses of why they are not there in the media. Luckily, there are many planets to choose from in Lylat where you can place them elsewhere while the main plot goes on. As long as you don’t break the universal constraints, or have a VERY good reason why it’s broken – you won’t have any real problem.

❝ Hm ,     who     told     you     that ? .  .  .     Mm ,     yes ,     technically     I     am     of     royal     descent ,     though     it     means     practically     nothing .

All hail Andross, Emperor of the Lylat System!  I like my Game Over Screens like I like my Chocolate, DARK but in a way that is clever and doesn't just have excessive violence or sexual assault or crap like that. Andross has defeated the StarFox team, and now rules the Lylat System with no one left alive to challenge him. He has snapped off the top end of Krystal's staff, kept poor old Slippy's cap, and slung the jacket of the fallen hero Fox Mccloud over his throne to remind all throughout the Lylat System who is now the master.

I’ve been a little mentally stuck on this Star-Crossed chapter so if you’re wondering where the next update is... yeah, writer’s block for that fic has been a bit rough lately.  ^^;;  I am, however, here to bring you the good news that planning for future fics is going surprisingly well!  I have a mini-fic that will probably land 25k words(ish) in the works and a longfic that I’m doing an outline for.  I don’t think I’ll be posting it until Star-Crossed is done or MOSTLY done.  I’ve literally written 2 fics in the middle of Star-Crossed and I don’t wanna stop and do that again.  Star-Crossed will be the main focus until it’s done, even if I have to strangle this writer’s block in order to make that happen.
I’m going to also go ahead and unofficially close the poll I had earlier!  Here are the results (thank you for those who voted):
Tumblr media
Love and War seems to be the winner and tbh, I’m a bit relieved because that’s the fic concept I’ve found myself having more inspiration for lately.  So that will be the next longfic after Star-Crossed!  Oh the antis are gonna love this.
Before that fic (or maybe alongside it?  Haven’t decided yet), however, I am going to be doing aforementioned small fic as a sort of break.  It’ll be somewhat a spiritual successor to And The World, A Little Bit Darker and will follow Andrew Oikonny pre-Star Fox Assault.
Anyways, that’s your fic news of the day.  I thought about just leaving it at that but I do feel quite bad that I haven’t been able to focus on SF as much lately.  Hyperfixations do in fact go brr.  Here’s a first, very rough draft sneak peek into the mini-fic I’m planning as a lil treat!
A rhythmic tap-tap-tap of Andrew Oikonny’s foot set a tempo that was just slightly off-beat from the jazzy elevator music playing as he ascended, his destination the quarters of Sargasso’s leader, Wolf O’Donnell.  Or Lord Wolf O’Donnell, as he had decided to style himself as of late.  Andrew was not sure who had planted in his head the notion that Wolf needed to call himself royalty to be respected but that was unfortunately the way life was now.  Wolf was all but retired from his mercenary work, having pilfered a small fortune and amassed a small army.  He ran Sargasso as a criminal hub, letting other unsavory sorts come through if they had the coin to pay for a place to lay low.  And Andrew supposed it was nice, getting a steadier paycheck and not having to risk his life for it.  But it was not the life he wanted for himself, and he had known that a long time ago, before Sargasso was even being built.
And Wolf had known it too, Andrew knew.  It was unspoken that eventually they would have to go their separate ways but the simian was hellbent on making sure that did not happen.  After everything had gone to hell on Venom, Star Wolf had become his new home and the mere thought of leaving it behind… Well, Andrew could not think about that happening.  Not after everything they had been through together.  They were a group of damn ruthless mercenaries but at the end of it all, they were a family.  In that weird and warped way.
But each time Andrew thought that to himself, he felt guilty.  He had not said a word to his mother since he had left and was fairly certain she thought he was dead by now.  And Andross’s memory clawed at him mercilessly, reminding him of what could have been.  Staying at Sargasso felt like a dailliance, flirting with apathy when there were things to be done.  Andross’s dream could still be realized if it continued to live in all of them.  And it lived fiercely in Andrew Oikonny’s heart.
He wanted to go back to Venom.  Back to the grind of freeing the Lylat System from Corneria’s oppressive rule.  And Wolf was fully aware of this; they had been having this discussion on and off for years now.  It ended the same way.  Wolf was adamant about staying at Sargasso, about letting old dogs lie.  And Andrew was adamant about the future his uncle had laid before his feet, that of a successor to a throne that was his birthright.  Each conversation had inevitably ended with Wolf “winning” the argument and Andrew had contented himself with waiting for a more opportune moment.  It was a cycle that had continued on for several years now… and now Andrew was at his limit, watching life and time slip on by as nothing was done.  Nothing changed.  The Sargasso residents, mostly ex-Venomian soldiers, ate, drank, and partied like the Lylat Wars never happened.  And Andrew was left to think on that legacy that beckoned to him back on that old poisonous planet, left by the wayside in favor of relaxation and booze.
Tap-tap-tap of his foot.  Then the doors opened and Andrew was met with the sight of Wolf in his luxurious albeit worn red armchair and Leon leaning against the desk next to him.  The perfect image of a crime boss and his faithful lackey.  Wolf was on speaker phone with someone.  A client, possibly.  Or another band of mercs looking to negotiate for a place to stay while the CDF scoured the galaxy for them.  Andrew didn’t know which.  And he frankly did not care.

what'd you recoomend if your trying to write a self insert character?
Tumblr media
Lemme put this under a read more bc this got long! This will just be what I would recommend from my own experience!
STIGMA
Personally I think the most important thing to remember when it comes to self-inserts is that not everyone is gonna be jazzed about role playing with you, even if you are well put together as a muse. So don’t put too much weight on people if they don’t want to ship, or roleplay or anything. It can be a bit of a stigma in some situations.
BE REALISTIC
Another thing to remember is to really examine the world that you’re building this self insert for, and examine yourself as a person. Realistically where would you fall in that universe? As a normal citizen? If your line of work is something like say some sort of repairman, then find some way that you realistically could get into a situation where you can interact with those in the series. For example, I cleaned houses while I was making Coyote, but I pushed it a bit and tried to really think about how someone like me could end up in a situation where he could interact with different people in the Star Fox series. He took a job as a janitor because he got kicked out by his mother, another event that happened to me. Incorporate your experiences, memories both good and bad, into the character / portrayal.
MAKE SURE IT MAKES SENSE / DEVELOPMENT
A lot of people make the mistake of trying to push their self insert to be something more dangerous and far from who the person is like in real life. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but it has to be done in a way that makes sense in terms of a story. Ask yourself what you’d have to go through in order to become someone vastly different than who you are now. Realistically assess danger when in character, don’t pull the whole “I’m not scared of you” bullshit unless it is very much realistic for you to do the same in reality. An example of this is how in reality I really love Wolf and Andross, specifically @icantlose and @lylat-ruler. However, if I were to meet a dangerous mercenary and a tyranical ruler in reality I would NOT be trying to joke around and make fun of them. Realistically think about how you would act in the situations you put your characters in.
INTERACTING WITH OTHER MUSES
You have to be fine with characters insulting, attacking and killing your muse / self-insert. If you take everything personally and make a big fuss about it that’s a no no, no one likes someone who throws a fit over something a fictional character said. It’s really Not That Deep and not worth the energy.
SHIPPING
Same rules apply with ships as it does with non-self-insert. Don’t force ships on people, stay realistic in your interactions. Ask yourself: if someone treated me like this / acted like this in real life how would I react? Of course it’s expected that sometimes muses have crushes but as long as you’re not force ships on anyone I don’t see any harm in it personally. Just don’t try and use that as a way of guilting people into shipping. Be upfront if you feel the chemistry and it’s realistic, or if you’d like to see it shipped. Ask them, be polite, if they say no they don’t try and act all wounded and butthurt. Say you understand and would still like to roleplay even without the ship, and move on. Maybe if you feel like having that angst you could always ask if they’d be comfortable with an unrequited love situation. But if they say no then drop it and move on.
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE PERSONALITY
Don’t be afraid to examine your flaws and strengths when building the self-insert. What are some good habits / things you’re good at? What are some bad habits / things you’re bad at? Include them all! A self-insert is you after all, if you make them too perfect or too imperfect then they don’t really seem like a person but rather a visual representation of how you see yourself and that doesn’t always work out because they may be one-dimensional in terms of personality.
SOCIAL POSITIONING AND WORLD-BUILDING
Look at where you fit in your world. What’s your gender, race, class, education, etc? Ask yourself how you feel about it, is it something you have to hide? Why? Examining your relationship when it comes to society is crucial, it helps to world build and flesh out the character more and it helps you think about how you can translate that over to the fictional universe.
MAKE PEOPLE CARE
Just like you have to do in regular stories, you have to give the reader / audience a reason to care about your muse! Why should they care if something happens to them? Are they in some position of power? Are they kind? Are they mysterious and drawing the audience to want to find out more before they die? Give your followers a reason to give a shit about the character, just as you would any other character. Without a reason to care there’s nothing really keeping people there, and this doesn’t mean you have to make the character related to some main character because being related to someone important isn’t a personality. Perhaps it could be something they use to defend themselves but there has to be more there, if there’s no intricacies or layers to your character then they’re not going to keep the reader’s attention. Build a character in a way that draws people to them, give them flaws and strengths and blind spots, let them have misplaced anger or toxic traits. When you do that you humanize them and thereby make the audience care about what happens to them. You make them relateable and lovable. Give good character bad traits and bad character good traits. Life isn’t black and white and your self-insert shouldn’t be either!
FEEDBACK
Don’t be afraid to get feedback even if it is negative or not what you want to hear, it can help you grow.
I think that’s all I can think of, but if you have any more specific questions about this subject feel free to ask!

“…Ya realize who you’re talkin’ to, right? The reason I’m in the situation that I am is because I did exactly that: stopped givin’ a shit about the rules, stopped carin’ about what people expected of me – all I knew was that I got hurt and I kept gettin’ hurt and that was gonna fuckin’ end.”
“You’re force-fed a lot of propaganda when ya join the army during a critical time. Andross was makin’ moves on Venom that had Corneria spooked and Pepper would do just about anything to ensure that we knew who the enemy was. The entire situation between Andross and Corneria was so morally ambiguous; right and wrong were such blurred concepts. Andross was hurtin’ himself and other people for the supposed betterment, growth and progress of our solar system and in order to keep his grip on the situation, Pepper hammered into our heads that we were the good guys, Andross was the villain, and we couldn’t allow whatever he was doing on Venom to continue. He used to make comparisons of Andross to the devil; remarks about how the devil was a master of makin’ people second-guess themselves, or mistakenly believe that his crimes were necessary evils. As long as Pepper could paint the issue into an easy-to-understand, simple concept that kept us on what he deemed was the correct side of this fight, he was happy.”
“Tensions between Venom and Corneria got worse and the delusion Pepper held over us got harder and harder for him to maintain. Less and less of us really believed we were heroes, y’know, the good guys – we all knew we were just tools. We were supposed to see Andross as this monster who’d hurt anyone and commit any crime to get what he wanted, but Pepper wasn’t really much different. Ya know where I’m goin’ with this, ya heard the story before: the platoon I was part of were sent off to Venom and got ambushed. I lost my eye, and Pepper wouldn’t order a rescue and wasn’t interested in talkin’ to Commander Cobb to discuss lettin’ me go.”
“It was then I realized Pepper was no different than Andross. I’d be lyin’ if I said I wasn’t suspecting it for a while, but, that was when the reality definitely sunk in. They were both powerful men who believed they were on the right side of history, fightin’ for what they believed in. Their morality skewed, I dunno if by their ego, or by the fact that the two were once friends – each man wouldn’t let the other one win, no matter what. Once ya discover that everything you’ve been taught are all lies, it starts to really sting, y’know? I really wanted to believe I’d make it, that one day, if I worked hard enough, I’d get to fly along the stars with James McCloud and his crew of heroes. But when I lost my eye, I realized that dream was dead in the fuckin’ water. Pepper wasn’t the saint he tried to portray himself as, we weren’t fightin’ for honor or the good of Lylat. We were fightin’ to defend a small man’s ego, and when ya fuck up and fail to protect that ego, he’ll drop ya right then and there.”
“I met Andross that day. Curled up on that filthy floor, with Maggie’s arms wrapped around me, I kept comin’ in and out of consciousness. She was instructed to let go of me and stand aside and she did reluctantly. Through a sea of armored soldiers, Andross appeared and looked down at me. That angry brow of his and those intense eyes were clear as day, through the blur of my tears and blood. Without a fuckin’ word, he started cleanin’ me up with tools from a small bag he was carryin’. I remember bein’ terrified and Andross’s presence was oddly comforting. He asked me what happened and why I was so far away from home, bleeding out on his floor and after I explained what Pepper did, Andross…empathized. And then he gave me a second chance. Andross probably took advantage of the state of mind I was in, but he took me in and allowed me to continue my military training – hell, the guy eventually granted me a squadron to command of my very own.”
“I stopped caring that day. I stopped caring about heroes, about villains. I stopped caring morals, about Corneria, about Star Fox, about Pepper. I was given an opportunity to get strong, to get mean and I was gonna make sure everyone knew how angry I was.”
“How angry I am.”

Nexus Support: Slippy/Fox (3)
“Don’t play dumb, Slippy,” murmured Fox. “I’ve…taken a lot from you.”
“…What?” Slippy shook his head. “No, Fox, you’ve given a lot to me.”
“That’s not true,” quietly contended Fox. “I pressured you into dropping out of the Academy with me.”
“Pressure nothing,” countered Slippy. “I chose to go with you.”
“After I went on about how I’d have a difficult time working on everything by myself, talking about how I could use someone with your talents, right, I made that a completely fair choice for you,” deadpanned Fox.
“But you did. Fox, you told me that you would find someone else and that I could have stayed to finish my work in school. Sure, I went with you, partially because we both knew it would take you a while to find someone on my level of engineering, but I made that decision to leave and stick with you.”
“Why though?” Fox threw his arms up and let them drop back down. “Slippy, we’ve been over this before, yet you never give me an honest answer. Why follow me through a path of vengeance?”
 “Vengeance and justice,” corrected Slippy.
“You’re missing the point,” argued Fox. “You could have had any kind of future you wanted, Slippy. With Space Dynamics, you could have become a big, full-time member, and proudly followed in your father’s footsteps, or even surpassed that. Beyond that, you could have done anything with your mechanical expertise.”
“And do you mind telling me where I’d be without my best friend?” Slippy folded his arms. “Fox, we both knew that you would have gone to whatever lengths it took to stop Andross. But if you didn’t have me at your side, if you didn’t have someone that really cared about you on the team, who would build the proper technology to help you and the others save Lylat and do his best to keep you alive?”
“See? That’s my point, I really didn’t give you a choice.”
“My joining you didn’t guarantee your safety, Fox!”
Harshly, Slippy pounded a fist against his desk and left it there for a moment. He then winced and waved it around, gently rubbing it with his other hand.
“True, it gave me a peace of mind, but I didn’t go just to help keep you alive. Your dad was my friend too, and even closer friends with my dad. Losing him, watching your heart and world break before my eyes, that made me angry.” Slippy sighed. “I knew how that was, feeling like you were totally alone in the world. But you actually lost both of your parents, Fox; what you felt was justified. What wasn’t, however, was what Andross had done to you. What wasn’t at all acceptable was that he would stop at nothing to make all of Lylat bow beneath his rule, his tyranny. I’m not a fighter, but I knew that with you, we just might be this galaxy’s best chance.” He shook his head and stared lower to the ground. “And for once, I wanted to help my friend with someone that was bothering him, because I owed you so much more than that.” He looked back up to Fox. “You gave me some pressure, Fox, that’s true. But don’t think you made my decision for yourself, and don’t think you stole an incredible future from me. Because, really, you didn’t.” He shrugged. “And…my role in the Lylat Wars did actually get me some additional attention and offers, so…it worked out for me, anyway.”
 “Slippy…I…I don’t know what to…how do I answer that?”
“You don’t need to.” Slippy beamed. “You saved Falco by giving him a chance to turn his life around. You saved Peppy by giving him hope for the future. And you literally saved Krystal from the threats on the Dinosaur Planet, as well as offering her a chance to start anew. With me, you’ve helped out more times than I can count, and way more than I can ever repay.” He picked up one of Fox’s hands and squeezed it tight with his own. “So, don’t ever think that your choices ruined anything for any of us, Fox. You helped all of us. We just try our best to return the favor and do what we can to help you too.”
 “I…Slippy…”
The frog patted his friend’s hand and released it. “I can give the rousing friendship speeches too, Fox, and I’ve known you long enough to do it right.”
“That you do, Slip,” relented Fox. “Thank you.”
“Not a problem! Anyway, it’s late, and I’m past sick of looking at these Reflectors, so I might work on a few more, but then I’m getting some rest.”
 “Do you want any help?”
“No way. You need to get some sleep too, Fox, and probably more than I do.” He pointed at the door. “So, get.”
“Fine, I’ll go,” relented Fox. “But don’t stay up late either, ok?”
 “Sure. Oh, and Fox?”
 “Yeah?”
“I…I miss my mom a lot too. It’s not the same as you, I’d imagine, but…”
“I get it, Slippy. Thank you.” Fox smiled. “We’ll talk more about that next time, ok? Be open to it, because I will bring it up.”
 “R-Right.”
 “Ok. Good night.”
Slippy nodded and watched as Fox stepped out the door to head to bed. He waited for a bit before turning back to work on the Reflectors, puzzling over the last of his thoughts.

Venomverse Lylat Fanon: The Ancient Venomian Empire
Recently I made a post about the influences a 1983 anime called Armored Trooper Votoms had on Star Fox, namely in the similarities between SNES Venom, Andross, and the planet Quaint and its ancient technology.
Well now I’m going to take that a step further and whip out a headcanon inspired by this detailing the ancient history of Venom and its relationship with the Lylat system.
Millennia ago, Corneria was not the only agrarian world paradise in the Lylat System. Three other planets shared that honor: Aquas, which whose original name is lost to time and was destroyed by ice cap flooding provoked by the Bacoon; Titania, a once advanced agrarian world that was devastated by an asteroid collision... and Venom, whose advanced technology was said to be greater than any other world’s in the Lylat System.
The lore in which I base this on stem from two sources; one is the blurb for Venom in the Star Fox SNES manual:
“When Andross was driven out of Corneria by Director General Pepper, he occupied this planet as his base. While it used to be known as the "evergreen planet", and boasted beauty second only to Corneria's, Andross has re-made it into a dark, polluted world of military machines. The natives, who were not advanced, were enslaved by Andross, and drafters into his military machine. Though they serve Andross, they can inwardly hope that the forces of Corneria can win a victory and liberate the Lylat system.”—Star Fox 1993; Instruction Booklet
This contradicts even the lore provided by the Nintendo Power comic (which is considered the primary lore for the SNES canon), given how in the comic Venom was already a desolate world and not polluted by Andross, but it does plant the idea that Venom was once a garden world much like Corneria. This is further supported in Star Fox 2, where Venom is seen lush and green again, having either recovered from Andross or been terraformed outright:
Tumblr media
So, if Andross couldn’t have polluted it, what happened to Venom to make Corneria the only remaining garden world in Lylat?
Let’s go back to Venom’s advanced technological ruins. Drawing again inspiration from VOTOMs, where the planet Quaint used its super advanced technology to subjugate the entire system they were in, I theorize in ancient history long since past, Venom did the same. For hundreds if not thousands of years, Venom was the mightiest world in the Lylat System, perhaps even the originators of Titania’s own advanced society before its devastation.
However, with such a history of conquest and domination, things were surely doomed to fall apart eventually. No empire lasts forever, and with such devastating technology at their hands, the ancient Venomians in all likelihood destroyed themselves, and ruined the once beautiful world of Venom with them. Perhaps this cataclysm of war is what brought the name Venom to the planet, after the Lylatian god of death and malice. With their civilization destroyed and planet ruined, the survivors broke into small, independent tribes and assumed a life of rustic survivalism on their dead world. They abandoned their technology that they had used to destroy themselves, and over the generations the knowledge to use that technology was lost and forgotten, until Andross’ fateful arrival millennia later.
Thus the animosity of Venom and Corneria dates back to history older than time: where as once the two were rivals, Venom fell and left only Corneria as the sole utopia in the Lylat system, ensuring its role of importance for the rest of Lylat’s history. When Andross armed and recruited the Venomian natives for his army, he likely evoked the name and image of their ancient ancestors, of their empire, boasting conquest to be their birthright and thus riling the simplistic reptiles into a war hungry fervor.
And it was with this technology that Andross finally perfected his designs that he could not complete while working with Corneria. The disastrous teleporter experiment that killed countless innocent lives and resulted in his banishment would now be realized, ironically, by the lost technology of the very same planet that he was banished to. This, along with realizing his telepathic abilities through cybernetic enhancements with the Telekinetic Amplifier and designing new, radical weapons, are all owed to the history Venom tried to forget. The history of their empire that once ruled Lylat, and once nearly destroyed them all.
