17 | What they’d sing at karaoke.

Picture this, Edward Nashton getting invited out to a karaoke bar with his co-workers. And normally he'd turn them down, of course. But part of him thinks about the words of one of his favorite self help podcasters. Take the leap. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Let people in. And so he tries to ignore the lingering worry that they're deceiving him and agrees.

His coworkers absolutely have to get him to drink a little too much. It's textbook peer pressure. C'mon, Eddie boy, loosen up a little. Have some fun. How consuming alcohol and losing your inhibitions counts as fun, Edward has no clue. But he sighs, shrugs, and downs another drink. Under the influence of tequila and the increasing insistence of his coworkers, Edward finds himself clutching the microphone with clammy hands.

He stares at the lyrics of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by The Eurythmics being played on the monitor. His nerves are numbed down by the alcohol but with his puffy jacket still on, he drips with sweat. Edward hates his singing voice and he's not about to give his coworkers another reason to poke fun at him. So it's more like he's talking along to a vague melody all while bobbing his head intently to the synth beat. Slowly, his coworkers begin to clap in time as well, but Edward tries his best to tune it out so he can fixate on the lyrics running by on the screen. He only allows himself to listen to them when the song is over and they drunkenly cheer for him.

22 | How they spend their money.

Edward 100% has kind of a scarcity complex when it comes money. He doesn't make much at his job and the majority of it most likely goes towards paying for rent and other cost of living expenses. So the little that's left...I get the idea that he tends to hoard it all. He'd worry way too much about some unexpected expense coming along and him not having the money to cover it.

However, if he ever has an article of clothing that's getting so threadbare that he can't justify keeping it, the day he replaces it is a good day. Like this man buys himself a new pair of pants and maybe splurges on some socks just for fun (and probably feels kind of guilty about it afterwards but justifies it by saying that he only bought it because his feet get cold at night). But other than that, Eddie tries to stay as rational, practical, and frugal as possible.

Hello, Meda! Let’s say, hypothetically, for the sake of the argument, I was considering checking out some of Pedro’s roles to start pooooossibly writing for him. What shows/movies would you recommend to a total newbie? 👁️

Eli!! Hey!! 🫶🏻☺️

I’m leaving all my recommendations under the cut since I went on for a stupidly long amount of time lmao.

I would say that it depends on what kind of media you’re in the mood to consume right now!! My good reliable recommendation is always The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. That one features one of my favorite Pedro boys, Javi Gutierrez. He’s an absolute sweetheart and even though I’m not a massive Nicolas Cage fan, him and Pedro are such an enjoyable duo. It’s one of my go-to comfort films since it’s pretty lighthearted!!

Another good goofy one is The Bubble. Here, he plays Dieter Bravo. An aging, paranoid, somewhat washed up actor who has…so many fucking issues…so many of them. The movie itself isn’t fantastic (in my opinion lmao), it takes place during the earlier days of the pandemic so a lot of the humor it employs is very reminiscent of the time. But it’s still a fun watch, if only for the sake of our favorite trash panda.

In a similar, still somewhat lighthearted vein, I’d recommend Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It’s an action film with plenty of goofs and gaffs. In this one, Pedro plays a classic cowboy, Jack Daniels, also known as “Whiskey.” He’s got the southern charm, the lasso, and ever so slight himbo vibes.

I would say that quintessential Pedro is him as Joel in The Last of Us, Javier Peña in Narcos, and Din Djarin in The Mandalorian. Those are easily some of his most memorable roles in my mind and that’s for good reason!! They’re the parts where I think he really shines as an actor. However, I would highly recommend taking a look over content warnings for both The Last of Us and Narcos since both shows deal with some possibly triggering material if you’re not familiar with either of them!!

Last but not least, my underrated pick: him as Ezra in Prospect. Prospect was one of those films I didn’t think much of at first, but it’s lowkey one of my favorites. Ezra by himself is such a fascinating character but it’s also a great example of how well he bounces off of other actors?? He and Sophie Thatcher play off of each other so well (though I may be a tiny bit biased because I also adore Sophie lol). So if you’re ever in a little bit of a sci-fi mood, I would definitely recommend diving into Prospect!!

Keep in mind, there are so many other roles he’s played. His career spans all the way back to the 90s. Aside from the more well known things he’s been in, there are more indie projects he’s been a part of and little roles that he’s taken on various shows. I very strongly believe that there’s a Pedro boy for everyone and I hope you have fun delving into the insanity!! 💛

AAAAAAAAAHH YOU HAVE WATCHED THE BARBIE MOVIE 🎉🎉🎉

Yes, I have!!!! And oh my GOD I loved it!! Like, yeah, Oppenheimer was interesting…but Barbie was everything I was hoping for and more. Like I can’t wait until I can start watching it regularly because I can so easily see it becoming a comfort movie.

And the experience I had made it that much better?? I’m grateful I saw it with my mother because at multiple points I held her hand as we both just sobbed. Like overall…ugh, I haven’t have such a transcendent film experience like that in a while.

To be honest, witnessing all of the plagiarism nonsense from the past week or two has been more draining on my creativity than I originally wanted to acknowledge? Like I’ve tried to reblog signal boosts from other people where I can. But other than that, I’ve kind of been avoiding the site a bit. Because I never really know what new horror I’m gonna see when I open up my dash lmao.

But at the same time, I know that that’s exactly what those folks want. They find enjoyment in ruining an outlet that lots of us enjoy. So for now, my heart is just with the mutuals who’ve been affected. And I hope that if this plagiarizers don’t stop, we can at least learn to collectively ignore and block when we see them.

hi meda!

i’m back with another “gentle reminders” ask. it goes in line with one of my personal goals this year of trying to work on my kindness and how i show that kindness to others.

the beginning of a new year is always a bit tough for many people, for many reasons but at the scale of the fandom, i have noticed some negativity starting to spread. maybe it’s bound to happen on any social media but i always considered tumblr to be different, to be over the kind of discourse you could find on other apps. this place has been a true haven for many of us and i would like to keep it that way, so i thought, as a way to counterbalance this negativity, i could compensate with a nice message for one of the driving forces in the fandom: our dear writers.

i would like to begin by saying thank you.  thank you for dedicating your time, your energy, your love and sharing pieces of yourself with us. the fandom wouldn’t be what it is without you: just like a body needs a brain or a heart to function properly, fandoms need writers like they need others contributing. thank you for offering diversity, engaging with different tropes and characters to reach as many readers as possible. i will admit, some things proposed are not my cup of tea but i know they can be enjoyed by others, the same way some of my favorite fics wouldn’t necessarily attract others. so thank you for giving a chance to everyone to find what they enjoy, to discover, to learn, to cry, to laugh, to love and to be able to do so in an open, safe space. thank you for interacting with us as well. thank you for responding to our questions, sharing snippets when we get impatient, teasing us with your new ideas and making life a little more fun and exciting every day. and of course, thank you for doing all of this for free. for expecting so little in return when you give us so much.

now a few things i want you to remember: 

although we’re all thankful for having access to your art, your first fan should be yourself. write what you enjoy, write that self-indulgent fic, write your favorite trope, an improbable duo or crossover because you’ve always wanted to. do it for yourself. in the same way, have fun with it. writing is a hobby, it’s not your job, it’s not supposed to be a chore. so do what makes you happy. don’t worry about updating fics, about being slow, about posting too much or too little. some things might take time, some might need an hour to be posted but in the end, they all matter just the same. they’re worth being read and cherished and we will appreciate them. whether you have thousands of notes or barely a few hundreds, you have your place here. you’re still an amazing writer, you’re still an artist regardless of the stats. 

whether i've had time to binge-read your stories or just discovered you. thank you. i love you. i’m grateful for you. i see and appreciate your work. your efforts. you.  i’m sorry if you’ve ever been received with negativity but i hope this can make up for some of it.  you deserve nothing but kindness and appreciation and i hope you know how much you matter here.

Oh goodness gracious…I’m not going to lie, this made me a tad bit emotional. I haven’t posted much of my work. And honestly, that’s partially due to the level of negativity that has been propagating lately in this fandom. For me, it makes it a lot harder to just let go and write and post what I want to.

Hell, I currently have a WIP that I’m genuinely loving but I’m so afraid of subjecting it to an audience that can be so unforgiving. But no more. None of us should let that fear control the art we produce. It’s a story I want to tell so it deserves telling.

Kindness from folks like you heals a little bit of my soul. It reassures me to know that amidst the discourse and negativity, there are plenty of people who also just want to hang out, have fun, and spread love. 10 | How they deal with pain. 

Biblically, pain and suffering breed perseverance, character, and strength. So, whether than pain be physical or emotional, I can imagine Eli viewing it as a test and trying to meet it with that stiff upper lip. A lot of time, this results in him bottling everything up and then unloading it all at once in whatever direction he ends up in. Everyone believes that Father Eli Sunday is bringing forth the evil, demonic spirits and casting them away. But, in reality, with every devil that Eli casts away, he's only casting away his own rage, repression, and pain. With this kind of purge, he can choose to believe he is glorifying his God and proving his goodness and selflessness.

14 | How they did in school.

In modern terms, Eli gives me the vibe that he'd totally be a "devil's advocate" kind of kid. However, in the time period, if Eli did go to school I think that would manifest in him thinking he knows better than the teacher. After all, his daddy is a preacher and he's armed with the word of God. And none of that rotten book learning can outshine the good Lord's word. I see him being quiet and unassuming, but internally, he is buzzing with judgements. The teacher? Stupid. His peers? Fools. He'll regurgitate whatever answers he needs to in order to get good grades but internally, he scoffs at all of it.
