I was thinking about all the similar narrative beats between Critical Role (specifically campaign 2) and NADDPOD, so I made a list for fun (and also to try to convince more critters to become naddpoles, please listen to NADDPOD)
- most excellent found family vibes
- everyone cramming into a dome/One Big Bed to sleep together as love language
- personalized Magnificent Mansion as love language
- PC DEATH. WHILE THEY HAVE A GUEST PLAYER.
- multiple canonically queer characters among players and NPCs
- including lesbian Melora (hell yeah). Melora is also the MVP god of both campaigns, let’s be real.
- what’s with all these dang wizards messing around with timelines
- it’s 100% acceptable to deal with enemies or people you hate by humiliating them (this is more the Band of Boobs’ thing but the Mighty Nein are absolutely not above it.)
- move into a snooty magical city, immediately lower the property value and annoy all your neighbors. Plant that huge glowing tree on your roof! Turn that sacred fountain into a lazy river!
- NPC becomes a permanent party member. The DM did not intend for this to happen. Character becomes a beloved fan favorite.
- Stuff that was a joke in the early campaign will make you cry at the end (THE MIGHTY NEIN BECOMING NINE. ONE BIG BED.)
- DM makes everyone cry by making sad cat/possum noises
- lots of plot points dealing with PCs and parents/parental figures
- everyone decides that this enemy is their new best friend for no goddamn reason and are then surprised/disappointed when it doesn’t work out (I was thinking about Caduceus trying to get a hug out of the Inevitable End, but could also apply to Essek early on. For the Band of Boobs, this applies to every fucking bullywug they encounter.)
- There’s a PC who’s a follower of Melora and loves fungus and decay. Comes from a big family. The team cook. 100% cool with hallucinogenic drugs. A big part of their personal journey is about leaving home and deciding what they want to do with their life.
- another PC is an orphan who was treated badly because of their race. Tries to act like a big tough man at first to cover up their massive insecurity. Eventually unlearns a lot of toxic masculinity and learns to be vulnerable and let people in. Becomes the captain of a ship and gets a cool hat to go with it.
- the arguably cutest PC is a prank junkie, sometimes with serious consequences (ie, having to leave your hometown or almost dying For Real.) The consequences do absolutely nothing to deter them from pulling more pranks.
- a PC gets temporarily controlled by an evil force for a while
- the resident halfling loves collecting shit. This can range from buttons and trinkets to teeth and father figures.
- not much lifespan angst until the very end, but when it hits, it’s brutal.
- a villain gets reformed with the Power of Friendship.
