hiya! i hope you're still down to answering asks about That Line, sorry if you're not, do feel free to delete this too!

i think my initial reaction to that line was like a sucker punch to the gut with the way it was setup, i.e. the framing, him standing next to TK, and TK looking at him after he'd said that line. i was so pissed and i'm still pissed about it now. in no way is that fair to TK for him to have said that, no matter how angry or hurt he is. i'm not saying right/wrong bc it's never as transparent as that, i'm coming from pov of an audience and having witness both sides of the argument. yes, tk crossed a boundary when he visited iris even though both him and carlos had agreed not to, and i understand why carlos would react the way that it did. i hated it, but i don't really wanna get into it now. which brings me to,

i think, or at least i'd hoped that this might be setting up for carlos' character arc where – you'd previously mentioned that 403 is essentially confronting his past before taking that next step into his future with carlos, and i agree! – we'll be able to see carlos realising that he needs to be able to learn how to let go of the unfounded guilt he had towards this whole mess (i.e. marriage, iris getting kidnapped), and iris would swoop in and be like, 'hey, i'm no longer your legal responsibility now, and i am no longer your responsibility, period. i can take care of myself, and i'm sorry for the way things were but we're still best friends and i still love you. you can let go of this now.' something something about him having to confront and address things rather than chalk things up until he absolutely had to confront it, in order to move forward in his life, bc atp its at a standstill. and it's kind of like a full circle moment for him to realise that he didn't need to, and will never need to take on this weight and responsibility all by himself and pushing away the ones he loves in the meantime (i.e. TK 😭😭💗💗💓), when there's someone so willingly to take on this weight with him (back to my boy TK). i know i'm dreaming big but if i had to cope with shitty writing choices from a professional who does this for a living, i can pretty much read between the lines and interpret it however i want to.

which brings us back to That Line, so if the writers are willing to explore that route with carlos, it would make much more sense in relation to him implying that it was the marriage, and TK having been drowning in his own guilt and misery, misunderstood and took that to mean that carlos had meant with him (imagine the angst we would get from this if it was addressed on screen i'll cry).

i know i'm putting myself through the mental gymnastics and i'm pretty sure i'm 100% wrong in this. atp i'm still pissed at everything and especially carlos (i know its warranted but i'm still pissed and that's ok bc i'll get over it), but this is a headcanon i'd like to believe in until we have more context in 404 IF (and that's a big fat if) it ever gets addressed. if its just a result of a poor writing choice, i'm more than willing to pretend it never existed too.

I think 4x03 was a hard pill to swallow after how easily 4x02 went down. We've never seen Carlos shut out TK like this, even in the ice storm (he was mad but he was there. Although I should note I did not see the ice storm arc play out as it aired, so my experience of it is different to those who did watch at the time), but we've seen him be 4x02 Carlos before. The contrast is extreme after last week's squishiness. It's implied he 'doesn't like TK right now' immediately after being madly in love. It's new for us to get to grips with, how he goes from one to the other so quickly. I share your sucker-punch feeling and I still have it now to an extent – even after having talked myself into thinking Carlos was referring to himself and Iris. I guess I wish I didn’t have to *think* that, and rather I could just know. I’m happy for plenty of things to be left up to my interpretation as a viewer, whatever I’m watching, but a lack of clarity around something like this line doesn’t sit well with me. I have a very nervous disposition!

You’re right, the framing and the whole vibe made it seem like a super passive-aggressive reference to his own relationship, yet as I mentioned it’s total whiplash for the man who’d so recently comforted TK on the couch to say such a thing. If he *was* making a reference to being super displeased with TK to the extent of suddenly finding their relationship bad (just writing this reinforces to me how it makes no sense…) then the punishment does not fit the crime. Especially as Carlos is canon-aware that TK and Iris hugged rather than had a falling out.

Essentially, I share your headcanon and would really like to see them address this comment so we and TK aren’t left in the dark. There are actually so many good things that can come out of this arc, even if the writing itself leaves us with neon question marks blinking over our heads. By trying to ignore his past and leave it behind him, Carlos has inadvertently looped it tightly with his present and now he has to unpick it from this point. That’s fascinating! I want to see it. This is contrasted nicely with TK, I think, who in some ways ‘left the past behind’ when Owen brought him to Austin, but has been doing the hard work to face it and overcome it ever since, by going N.A meetings, taking his sobriety seriously, talking to the crew about it and his relapse, and finding an incredible man who opened up his heart again. Carlos is on a similar journey, in his own way, he just has to stop resisting and pretending and lying. I love Carlos so much – and it’s because I love him that I care. That lad needs to apologise to his fiancé. TK needs to understand that Carlos’ reaction was due to 99 problems and TK was maybe 1-ish (due to a transgression that was actually nbd). And they are going to be okay.

Keith and Hunk were talking while James and I were cuddling on the couch. However, I got a call from my father.

Pidge: *answers her phone* Hello? ... What do you need? ... I see... Consider it done. Bye. *hangs up the phone and stands up* Keith, we gotta go. I'll explain on the way.

Keith: *stands up* Alright.

James: Wait, you guys are leaving this early? We've only been hanging out for an hour!

Pidge: I know, babe, but this is important.

James: *stands up too* More important than me and Hunk?

Pidge: That's not what I meant-

Hunk: *stands up as well* I agree with James on this one. It's either you and Keith or you just by yourself that leaves and doesn't explain what's going on. We're supposed to be friends! Don't friends tell each other everything.

James: Exactly! *takes a hold of Pidge's hands* I'm your boyfriend, Katie, and yet whenever you pull this stuff, it feels like I don't even know you.

Pidge: James, I want to tell you and Hunk about what's going on, I really do, but it's complicated-

James: What's so complicated about it?!

Keith: *pulls Pidge away from James* Lay off, James. There's just some things that can't be shared-

Hunk: Why not?! What's so bad that you can't tell your closest friends about it?!

Things started to get out of hand. Hunk started accusing us of seeing other people while James thought I was cheating on him with Keith. It was being too much until I finally gave in.

Pidge: *sighs in defeat* Fine. You really want to know what's going on?

James: Yes.

Hunk: Absolutely.

Pidge: *looks at Keith*

Keith: *shrugs*

Pidge: *looks back at them* Okay. But don't say we didn't warn you. Let's go.

It was the worst mistake of my life. I knew from the second we stepped into the alleyway my father wanted me and Keith to go to, Hunk and James were starting to have doubts. I didn't blame them; I still don't. Keith and I were supposed to hunt down a fellow gang member who wanted to go rogue. Once, we found him, there was no going back for my ex friend and ex boyfriend.

Pidge: *stops James and Hunk at the end of the alleyway and continues forward with Keith as they spot a man with a traveling bag* ... *starts to whisper to Keith softly* Sneak around him.

Keith: *nods and approaches the guy slowly with Pidge trailing behind*

Pidge: *puts on a fake confident smile* Going somewhere, Julio?

Julio: *looks at Pidge and Keith surprised, but then tries to put on a calm face* Just heading out of town for a bit. I told your dad I'd be back in a few days.

Pidge: Oh really? *takes out a switch blade and flips it open, then starts fiddling with it* Word on the street is that you bought a rental in New Mexico. One of my clients said they saw a moving truck near your house a few weeks ago. My brother went to go collect your 20 thousand dollar debt to my father before you left, but he couldn't find you or your belongings through the window. How odd... *slowly walking towards him*

Julio: ... *laughs a little before smirking* Listen kid, you got the teasing skills of a detective. You're pretty spot on. However, this is where we part ways. I found a better place for me in New Mexico; a better gang too. But tell your father that I'll pay his debt when I'm dead. *starts to walk towards Pidge to get out of the alleyway*

Pidge: *gives Keith a nod*

Keith: *charges at Julio and grabs him tightly*

Julio: What the hell?! *tried to shake Keith off*

Pidge: *walks over to them and punches Julio hard, making Keith let go and sent Julio crashing into a wall*

Julio: *coughs out blood and tries to get up*

Pidge: *kicks Julio down straight in the middle of his chest and holds her blade up to his neck* I'm afraid that's not how things work around here. I hate to this to you cause we're like family. However, your debt is so over due that my father had no choice but to send me and when he sends me, that's when shit gets real, buddy. *presses the blade into his neck a bit* So what's it going to be? Stay and pay the money you owe my family or try to run away like a little bitch?

Julio: *starting to get scared* Katie, sweetie, there's no need to be violent. I can't pay my debt! I have no job! The money I used to pay for the rental was somebody else's! Can't you have mercy for once? For me? Katie, your father is unreasonable, please be considerate and let me leave!

Pidge: ... *stares at him blankly* "The world doesn't show mercy and neither shall we."

And those were the last words he heard.

Thinking again about it, I decided to give Ace a real name he had (I made him go by Sirius but I chose to go by something a bit more subtle than that) before he was found by Arecia.

Originally, the ones known as Joker and Tiz were named Lean Hampelmann and Tohno Mahoroha respectively and there’s Machina Kunagiri and Rem Tokimiya too. It’s known that everyone in Class Zero save for Ace had a family which I’m betting that Arecia arranged it so they die and she can take them under her wing like she did with Ace as the first one.

There’s an interesting detail about some of them asking about their past before coming to the facility they live in and Arecia looking bothered by that, which makes it clear that she wants them to believe that their lives begin since the moment she adopts them. So following that logic, it isn’t far-fetched to think that she put all of them new names (like come on, it’d be way too much coincidence that all of them got names after card values).

So from now on, I’ve decided that Ace’s real name will be Ciel (which means sky or heaven, I’d say it’s pretty fitting since as a star he comes from the sky). This is something that not even he knows until he recovers all his memories in specific verses and realizes that Arecia, in truth, isn’t his mother and that originally, he wasn’t a human either (which would be Type-Next, FnC and depending on the plot, Dissidia as well).

What monster from folklore protects you?

The shadows are the safest place... They are the place no one will think to look for you.

With an unassuming external facade of a simple white bird, the caladrius does not seem like something to pay particular attention to. However, this creature hailing from Roman mythos is capable of a miracle like no other: healing the sick. The caladrius nestles down on the chests of the diseased and ailing, its fantastical feathers absorb the ailment from the sick. With a mighty caw, it rides skyward, flinging itself and the sickness into the sun's blazing fury. It sacrifices itself for the betterment of others. This is the true beauty of the caladrius.

You don't seem like much... You're average. You have always been easily overlooked. The minority. Never had a problem blending into the crowd for a large part of you life. Maybe you have never been the type to readily accept a compliment. Whatever your reason, for a while you were content like this. You are fiercely loyal to your friends, maybe you would even die for them. Beneath your meek demeanour is a burning spirit. One that will not stand to watch other's suffering. The caladrius notices your flame and strives to preserve it. It understands that sometimes, you need to care for yourself before you care for others. Again (like in many other times, truly), this shows how Ace gives so much thought to everything, even to what technically he shouldn’t/people don’t/he knows Arecia would scold him if she were to know about this. I should check what he said before that but if it’s what I think it is which is a line of the song he’s used to sing (which he does frequently as idly dialogue):

Walk on wandering souls For your respite we pray Let our humble song clear your hearts of dismay, Rekindle the flame in your souls and set you free So walk on and become the light that guides the way.

Then, this would match perfectly with a headcanon I have for the Type-Next verse in which Ace sings for those who perished so they might be able to find some rest.

Sometimes it takes time to see the character you’ve grown attached in different situations and circumstances to learn about the highest peaks of their personality. Type-0 never had too much spotlight as a game itself sadly for reasons, but Dissidia gave it a really nice spotlight to show just how utterly tragic its story is and seeing people who have nothing to do with Orience regretting and lamenting Class Zero’s life as a whole and death, to the point of being sorry for being unable to do anything for them at all being so young. And most especially, I’ve been gladly surprised by Ace:

⭑ Given his memories and being told that his will is strong enough to make any wish he has come true, Ace took this as a chance of creating Akademeia and start slowly from there to create the rest of Orience in the Dissidia world. Class Zero is dead, so in the event that the Dissidia world is saved, none of them will have any home to return to. Furthermore, this place is the only one where they can build a future for themselves.

✩ His only hope in all of this is the false light Cloud of Darkness shed by saying that Arecia is here which adds to his wish to create something similar to Orience in hopes that she’ll return so he can ask her to revive them. He doesn’t want the rest to remember they died, he wants to spare them that pain after remembering how everyone grieved over how much it hurts or how scared they are of facing death so if Arecia is truly here and they do save the world–– once they return to Orience alive, it’ll be like nothing happened at all.

⭑ For thinking that this world is Class Zero’s paradise, Ace questions seriously if he’s sick in the head. But he knows that there’s no other choice, and he has the power to create everything he wishes. Fully aware that Cloud of Darkness didn’t grant him this knowledge out of good will, Ace knows that what he’s doing is bad and that he’ll become a potential enemy to everyone because they wouldn’t understand why he’s doing it in the first place–– he doesn’t expect them either, because he noticed through conversations of others just how different and grotesque are Orience’s ways in comparison to other worlds. But he doesn’t care, he’s doing this to guarantee everyone a future that they will never have anymore in Orience and if there’s need to fight, that won’t change anything from what he’s already used to.

✩ The tragic side of the coin is that the others from Class Zero explained the ways of Orience to the others and while they don’t find it as such a big deal, the others are sad for them. Ace has been drifting apart from everyone to continue with his own mission, hurt by other worlds’ values given how different they are and how they are much kinder compared to Orience. It suffocates him to be with the others and never say what he believes on his own volition, which makes him seek loneliness to forget these bad emotions that unlike Class Zero, he understands even though he shields himself with harsh concepts taught by Arecia because the truth is that he’s hurting more than anyone else.

⭑ Even though initially Class Zero thought Ace has gone nuts for doing what he’s doing, it isn’t until they recover their memories that they understand his actions which are actually backed up by others who also believe that it’d be the best for them to stay in this Akademeia, that no one would blame them if they abandoned the orders of saving the Dissidia world. But this is an empty Akademeia, devoid of people and surrounded by nothing but dark miasma and monsters. Without orders, they don’t know what they’re fighting for, but they want to figure that out by Ace’s side who they acknowledge to have an exceptionally kind heart, especially now that they realized that he’s been doing all of this for their sake.

✩ But it’s not only this why Ace seeks loneliness and refuses to go with them. Even at the expense of his own safety, he wants to wait here for Arecia in a blind hope Cloud of Darkness instilled in him that she’s in this world and for this, he faces everyone. Everyone knows now that Ace has been hurting because of the other worlds’ values and understand why he needs this quiescence (something that did touch me is Squall telling him that he doesn’t need to stay too close/get along with everyone, but being alone isn’t the solution), they regret not having paid him more attention/having been more careful with what they said even though they wouldn’t have any way to know since Ace never spoke up, just isolated himself to find ways to mute down his feelings–– because it’s not a surprise that he doesn’t know to cope with them.

Honey: When your muse loves someone (whether it be romantic, platonic, or familial love), how do they show it?

This question is quite complex, so I’ll be dividing this in each of the different types of love since Ace’s actions may vary between one and another.

Initially, Ace interprets by familial love only what he gets from Arecia. A motherly love he would never doubt about, not even when her principles may be scary or awkward at first–– that motherly love he feels is what brings him to do his best for her. To make her proud of him and never see once a disappointed expression coming from her, even at the expense of excising himself and his identity in the process.

The next time he ever thinks as a familial relationship is when he’s questioned about having a sibling and Class Zero comes in mind. This, however, isn’t in a good sense at all. Ace sees them as siblings instead of friends. This is because in his mind, friendship is something you choose to have or not, whereas is different with siblings. You live with them, they’re there always whether you have a say in the matter or not. You have to get along with them because you don’t have any other choice but to do so. That’s how he sees them.

However, after the event of the Militesi capital and when all of them escaped into the forest, Ace started seeing them differently. They’ve become an actual family to him, the only ones he could turn to in a world that had them in their crosshairs. They knew what they’ve done, they trusted one another–– none of them would ever betray anyone. Additionally, in the novel there’s a quote Ace says in tears when everyone save for him die (he’s standing in his last legs, too): “My memories… I lost all my memories. My soul… is empty. I don’t know who these people are anymore… but I’m sure they were my everything…”

They’ve become his everything, and he proves so in DFFOO where he creates Akademeia by siding with a villain of darkness when he recovers his memories while the others don’t. He wished they wouldn’t remember they died to spare them the pain and sorrow they went through. He knew he’d become everyone’s enemy because they wouldn’t understand why he’s doing this. He knew he was exposing himself to danger because of his blind faith that Arecia was there too, so he could ask her to revive them and ultimately, by the time everything is over return to Orience like anything ever happened. He built a home for them in a world where they can have a future.

Moving on to platonic love, Ace might come across as callous and cold-hearted given that most of what he’ll have to say will be bound to reason and logic. Still, behind that coldness with which he shows himself, anyone can tell how kind-hearted he is due to his actions. Said actions clash with the aloofness he represents, since through them he shows worry, care and the like.

Ace himself isn’t a touchy individual, but upon learning the warmth behind physical touches and once the right amount of trust is placed upon said person, he’ll start permitting the other to touch him more often and express physical affection as long as it doesn’t cross a certain line where he grows uncomfortable. Initially he’d show a discomfort with touches either by freezing in place, tensing or straight asking to not do that again. He isn’t used to the tenderness and goodwill that comes with it after being so roughed up with nothing but war and everything surrounding it since the age of 6, he might be afraid of getting used to such tenderness. But ultimately, he’ll simply let it be and he’ll be the one initiating small shows of physical affection in private.

He’s faster to get used to physical touch rather than opening up innerly. Touching is intimate to him, but disclosing anything remotely close to his true thoughts and deepest feelings is intimate in a different league. During times in which he’ll leave behind slowly logic and be more comforting with words, it’ll be obvious that he’s more tender-hearted than what he permits people to know and depending on the established bond, he might find courage in himself to disclose parts of himself gradually.

Romantic love can be really tricky when it comes to him. Like I mentioned in a previous headcanon post, Ace feels a lot and intensely, but that doesn’t mean he can identify what he feels. Love, in whatever shape or form, is the hardest for him to fathom. The romantic type especially, given that he never received it, it’s only natural that he won’t know what it feels like.

Like in other areas like having dreams aimed for the future or overall the most mundane of things he was never exposed to, Ace has the mentality of a 2 year-old/has really innocent thoughts. Whatever type of kiss would enter in the romance plane (unless it’s obvious that he sees said person in a familial way) to him because he’s just not used to initiate physical affection, even less kisses. When it comes to affection from a person that he finds beautiful (beauty to him doesn’t limit to what’s seen, but what’s inside as well) or he likes (he can like their values, thought process or personality traits, but he won’t identify that as feeling romantic love for them), he’ll feel a higher need of repeating whatever habits they’ve come down to but will never pursue them given his confusion as to why he wants to do this while in normal circumstances he would never.

Ace can go two ways when it comes to this: either he identifies somehow that what he feels for x person is romantic love or he likes x person so much (and said person maybe professed to have romantic feelings for him) that he’d straight ask them to teach him to love them. As weird as said petition might be, it’s something he wants to do, not something he’s forcing himself to do. Whatever way that comes to take place, it’ll be hard. There are many circumstances Ace is facing and before starting anything, he’ll stress the fact that it won’t be easy and that it’ll take time (without considering the background in general and the circumstances under which they met).

Once that barrier is crossed, he’ll show himself as an extremely loving person. While before he might’ve had no idea of what love really is, that doesn’t mean that he never imagined what would it feel like to have a significant other and what he’d treat them like. However, these will pale in comparison to what he’ll come to learn over the course of the relationship since it’ll be all a learning experience to him, with baby steps.

Olive: Is your muse prone to feeling envious of others? If yes, what is it that they typically feel envious over?

This is hard to answer, mainly because Ace isn’t one to compare himself to others since he couldn’t care less what others do. If any feelings of envy were to blossom, that would be when he grows close to someone which again, it’s a rare thing for him to do. He’s quite recluse for many reasons, which makes it hard for him to establish bonds.

Now, when he does have feelings of envy for someone, I’ve come to realise that it’s always related to sentiments which might be quite ironic, granted that Ace himself is a sensitive individual. Most of the times, he doesn’t feel like a human–– but like a weapon, something effective to use in battle with the heavy expectation of the world upon his shoulders that aren’t below success and perfection.

Both given the way he was raised and the heavy manipulation his soul suffered over hundreds of millions of cycles, his feelings–– what makes him human, have been muted considerably to the point that Ace doesn’t identify them anymore. Far from doing him a favour, this proved to become worse given that he still feels intensely and it’s even worse to be unable to understand why or what’s triggering this in the first place. This makes him feel powerless, unable to move forward. He’s stuck in one place, completely terrified of even showing himself vulnerable to one single person without feeling the chill in the bones that Arecia might find out in some way and punish him for this, or even see the disappointed look on her face.

What he envies from others is the spontaneity with which they allow their feelings to spring free, let themselves be carried by them as long as they last even if these same feelings might make lead them to err. But it’s okay, because it’s human to err. Nobody is a weapon or a robot, it’s feelings what carry humans instead of logic. Ace finds bravery in whoever displays their feelings freely.

Vermillion: Is your muse courageous, or would they consider themselves to be more of a coward?

Without a doubt, Ace is courageous. Although it might come across as recklessness, he isn’t fearful at all of throwing himself in the fray even if he might die for doing something. Given that he can be revived over and over, it’s his wish to fight in the war until is over for those who can’t be revived, so they won’t have to fight or be deployed in such dangerous missions like the ones he’s thrown into. He’s been trained to fight all his life, he’s confident of his own abilities and his limits and limitations and acts consequently as he sees fit to not fail or put himself in danger, even though accidents might happen sometimes.

However, his perception of himself varies considerably. While when it comes to anything war-related he’s nearly infallible, he sees himself as a coward with what matters much individually: himself. His feelings.

Again, given the way he was raised and the manipulation, he finds himself unable to cope with them even if it’s something that will haunt him in a daily basis. He’s afraid of the unknown, of not knowing what these feelings are. Instead of facing them, he runs away. He leaves them behind, seeks something–– anything to distract himself with so he can forget. It’s just a fleeting solution, but a long shot from something healthy and restorative like it should be.

As a cadet, he might be one of the best acquisitions someone could ever have and Ace isn’t one to sell himself short when it comes to this because he knows how capable he is. But it’s when his own identity is being compromised that he thinks of himself as a monster, especially when he comes to learn the values of others who had kinder lives than his own. He doesn’t know what he is, but he knows that there are many things that make him heavily inhuman and he loathes that with every fiber of his being.

Why does Ace nap a lot?

Easy explanation: Ace is a tired boy, done in most cases with a great part of Class Zero for which he needs a great deal of energy to deal with. Thus he gets bullied for being able to sleep anywhere, so of course he’ll do that even more out of spite.

In his daily life, Ace is in a constant struggle of keeping his emotions in check, both out of fear of Arecia (he fears disappointing her since he knows her opinion about emotions weakening humans and his soul has been manipulated and twisted to her liking since the very beginning) and simply because his feelings are complicated to the point that not even he understands them in most of the cases (be it because of the same repression his soul suffered and all that entails such or because never copes with them, choosing instead to shield himself behind Arecia’s harsh concepts he apprehended and logic despite the consequences he faces later on for this same reason).

Furthermore, there is the Crystal Lapse Memory that affects everyone. He doesn’t only give it importance because he feels guilty over Izana (which plays a great part in this), but because Ace himself dislikes this ugly reality the crystals do. Leaving people behind isn’t something he likes, he fears being left behind if he dies and he feels like a part of him is disappearing as well.

Through slumber, Ace’s subconscious is liberated in ways that he can’t be open in a state of wakefulness. His soul that has been transmigrated time and time again for each passing cycle according to the laws of metempsychosis contains the memories of the past and memories that shouldn’t be there anymore given the influence of the crystals even though for the most part, Ace will wake up without any recollection of what he dreamed (which is something common, but the laws of Orience adds to the feeling more).

In the best cases, he’ll come to talk to other souls that have left the plane of the living such as Izana in Agito, where he tells him that he knows Ace is mourning his death and grieving, something that Ace doesn’t mind because his death is more serious than what he might feel–– and where ultimately there is a forgiveness that was never there, because Izana never blamed him. While he won’t remember his face or voice, the conversation remains etched in his soul and thus in his memory in what becomes a rare transgression of laws that may occur given the strength of Ace’s special soul as part of the myth and prophecy.

Since the very beginning of the experiment in his purest state bereft of the heavy manipulation Arecia subjects him in order to bend him for her own purposes, Ace manifested perceptions above the average, one of which ties him to Agito.

Exhibit A: Knowledge of the existence of a new world (which is Orience but a different cycle) and the knowledge of being reborn in said world.

Save for the gods and a selected few of individuals (six in all Orience which are the three gods themselves Arecia, Gala [because it’s their experiment and due to their involvement with the world to find Agito and thus Etro’s Gate] and Diva [as the history recorder ordered to not intervene], Joker and Tiz [who decided to remove themselves from the equation and Arecia herself disposed of them for not finding them the use she needs], Cid Aulstyne and the Queen of Concordia Andoria Kaya Tranka Fam Forturio, who has ties to the Crystal), thus it is unlikely that others know about the existence of next worlds or better said, new cycles.

Though said knowledge eventually wanes for each passing cycle, it’s an important and relevant knowledge that remains etched unto his soul alongside the memories of each of the 600,104,970 following cycles that will be locked away in the depths of the soul even if it isn’t exempt of evolution given the befallen events.

Exhibit B: Despite the Crystal Lapse Memory, his mind is capable of remembering to some extent.

In Orience where all the memories of the dead disappear by the Crystals’ doing, including all experiences shared with said individuals and whatever has been talked, Ace is able to remember the last words left to him by Izana, fact that under normal conditions wouldn’t happen and said words have a deep influence into his actions:

Don’t look back… Move forward. Keep your eyes on the enemies beyond. And one day, topple Byakko–– and save this country.

Exhibit C: Ability to commune with the dead and remember said conversation despite the laws of Orience impeding so.

Again, during the events of the first/second cycle, Ace was able to have a real time conversation with Izana, who has been watching over him and was concerned about Ace’s guilt and negative emotions that come with finding out that he’s responsible for his death via slumber. Even though Ace was shown to experience dreams through his slumber that in truth are flashbacks to memories that the crystals wiped away from his mind, he’s able to remember the conversation and he’s relieved for knowing Izana’s thoughts and coaxed him to stop feeling guilty for something he who died doesn’t think he is. Ultimately, he can’t remember what he looked like or his voice, but the conversation burns deep in his mind, bypassing the Crystals and Orience’s laws.

The latter is what ties Ace to Agito without having ascended as such. Given the soul exposure he always had for absorbing souls for such a long time, he has a certain sensibility to the dead and allows him to hear voices/at times being able to converse with them. The connection to the dead is precisely what Arecia has been trying to silence in the process of manipulating and bending Ace to her will: feelings. His sensitive nature is what connects him to the dead, or the dead find their way to his soul which goes in crescendo the more Ace communes with them.
