Things of 2022, Part 4: YouTube
None of these are new this year, but have all gone up a level and continue to educate and entertain.
I stumbled upon Philosophy Tube in January 2021, two months after I came out, and the first video I watched was Abi's coming out video. Utterly blew me away as it expressed so much of what I had been feeling, but had been unable to put into words. This year her videos: Vaccines & Freedom, Transhumanism, and the Crisis in the UK NHS have been masterpieces. This channel has expanded my thinking enormously over the last two years, and made me question many things I had taken for granted. Well made and extremely well researched.
This one could have gone in the podcast list, but really works best on YouTube with the slide deck. As someone with an engineering background, this hits a lot of my interests. In depth looks at engineering disasters? sign me up. Yes they can be quite long, and sometimes erratic, but the enthusiasm for the subjects is self evident. The episodes this year on The Ponte Morandi and the Y2K problem were standouts for me, and older ones on the Space Shuttle and Supersonic transport are up there too.
I've been watch TPS for about 4 years now, and Dan & Mick have rekindled my love of guitar. I've played for years, but never really made time to practice enough or really understand what I was listening to. I am a massive nerd as well, so the obsession with gear and trying to just give yourself the equipment you need to fuel your creativity is fascinating. Their videos this year on following a custom build of an acoustic guitar, refrets on a vintage Strat, and the explanation of how a reverb pedal works by building a monster rig of individual pedals to show the signal path were fantastic. combine that with live performances, over an hour long chat with Paul Reed Smith, and shooting out vintage Marshall heads just brilliant.
GCN create so much content, but their coverage of the Zwift academy finals each year with a chance to win a pro cycling contract with world tour teams is always a highlight. Some of the challenges they do are amazing, like trying to beat the hour record on an e bike, or trying to get Strava KOM on the world's steepest climb.
Clearly a large professional organisation with big resources, but to knock out 4 or 5 videos a week, including a half hour cycling news show is fantastic.
This could so easily just be used for advertising their own products, but it's not. To see a business openly promoting their competitors products is amazing. It's all about showing that there is space for everyone. In depth product demos, conversations with other pedal builders, history lessons on where guitar tones originated. Also obviously adverts for their own new products (done with Shameless Plug audio and visual stings). Standouts this year, The guitar pedals of Jimi Hendrix, and Marshall's greatest pedals.

Gavin x Android!Reader: Bad Advice
Tumblr media
AN: I swear I can write about other characters besides Gavin, but Detroit Evolution got me chugging that I love Gavin Reed juice, so here we are! Have some angst in these trying times.
It’s been roughly six months since a treaty was reached with the city of Detroit and Markus, tensions are still high in certain areas but all in all? It could be way worse. At least, that’s what you tell yourself anyhow. Many people would still sneer at you for even implying you having an opinion; being a part of the first wave of androids being trained by the DPD is arguably one of the greatest honours you could have ever received, and yet...you don’t feel that special. You actually feel more cursed than anything else, and considering the qualms you still have by using the term ‘feel’ speaks volumes. And the cause of this curse? Gavin Reed. It feels like just yesterday you were chosen to work alongside the ray of sunshine known as Detective Reed, and the reason why you specifically were chosen is almost laughable. “You’re the most expressive,” Captain Fowler’s voice rang inside your head. “If anyone can make that stubborn piece of shit turn around, it’s you.” You, not the Android that has been working with the police since before the revolution, but you. Often you wonder if this memory is a virus, propelling you forward into a useless cycle of aggression, clarity, reflection and right back to aggression. Despite working alongside Reed for months anytime you feel yourself getting closer to a compromise, you’re cracked down on even harder. “...scrap…up…!” …? You stop, the soft rumble of static catching your attention as the bustle of the station carries on around you. Officers and criminals alike are moving in tandem in their respective areas, and at first you’re surprised no one is acknowledging the suspicious sound. While you were willing to write it off as a glitch in your audio processors, a glitch like this never lasts for this long. Maybe you should-- “There you are, you piece of shit.” Venom and charged hate, you would recognize that tone anywhere. Gavin Reed marches straight towards you, paper crushed in his left hand while the other trembles. “What the fuck kind of shit were you trying to pull?! Isn’t it supposed to be your job to catch criminals? That’s what we’re being told anyway.” “Yes Detective, it is--” “Good! Glad we both agree! Now, would you care to enlighten me as to how letting a criminal get away is the same as catching them? What does your rusted nut and bolt ridden brain have to say about this, huh?!” Your stare flickers from his face to his hand, LED flashing to yellow as you realise what it is he has crumpled; the report from your last assignment. “Detective Reed, the fugitive had you at gunpoint. While I am fast there was no probable scenario where I could have caught him without you either receiving fatal injury or a life altering one. I did my best to-- “Yeah?! Well it wasn’t good enough! The bastard got away and it’s all on you!” “...didn’t want…” Your vision began to tunnel; tiles fell down into a vast void as everything around you and the detective spiraled out of existence, leaving just the two of you. A sensation began to swell within you, causing you to take a step back and look down at the growing void around you. Was this...fear? As you look up you brace yourself, ready to hear more from your partner about how poorly you did, but there was nothing. Rapidly blinking you swivel around, panic rising as the pieces slowly begin to fall in place in your mind. This is not real. You are shutting down. “I’m sorry…!” That sound, that voice… Looking up reveals a static image of the man who was yelling at you not even moments ago...but an expression of horror and concern was ever present in lieu of his usual angry one. It takes more processing power than it should, but after a moment you’re able to latch onto the sight before you; now that you’re very aware of the impending danger you’re in time seems to be passing at an alarming rate, one wrong step taken and you could be stuck in this void for good. You’ve found your tether in Gavin. The focus on the image expands further and further until it takes up your vision entirely. A rooftop, rain, blue splashed up Gavin’s shirt and neck, the buzz of conversations around you...and you you remember. You wouldn’t let the criminal get away this time. When he sees your pupils move Gavin slumped in on himself, face falling into what could only be described as pure relief. “(Y/N)...? Scraps holy fuck, hey! They’re awake!” You try to stand, but the grip securing you in the Detective’s embrace tightened. You and he both knew it wouldn’t take much effort to break from this entrapment, so when you abandoned the motion to look in his eyes much of Gavin’s resolve faltered. “...never ever pull that shit again, you hear me Scraps?” “But last time I let him get away you said--” “You honestly think listening to me is a good idea? You really are a stupid pile of plastic…”

So Now Trump Has Earned Your Trust? A Note of Covid Caution from Michael Moore....
There is one absolute truth about Trump: He is a consistent, absolute, unrelenting, fearless, and professional liar. A serial liar. A factually proven liar. How many lies now has the Washington Post proven in these four years? 25,000? A lie at least twice during every waking hour? Think of all the bad people you’ve known in your life. Even the worst ones you couldn’t say that about.
So why on earth would we believe him today? Has he earned your trust now? No. Yet, we’re decent enough to not want him to be sick, to wish him well, and maybe just this once give him the benefit of the doubt because why would he lie about this?
That’s not the question. The question we — and yes, I mean you, too, the media — the only question we really need to be asking is this: Why would Trump all of a sudden just start telling the truth?
All of you, my friends, have been saying for four years, “Trump’s a liar! Trump is a liar!” Why would you believe him now? He very well may have COVID-19. In fact, let’s assume he does. Of course he has it! Does that make him not Trump? I’m certain Mussolini came down with the flu one time. Pinochet and Franco would catch a cold every now and then. Margaret Thatcher must have had a migraine or two. None of them suddenly became nice or did good things - or started telling the truth - because they got sick. Jesse Helms with a runny nose was still Jesse Helms.
But Trump has a history of lying about his health. His longtime New York doctor, Dr. Bornstein, admitted a few years ago that Trump dictated his perfect “doctor’s letter” during the 2016 campaign. Then there was the White House doctor who said Trump could live “200 years!” What about his lying about that emergency trip to Walter Reed “to complete his physical?” Trump also has a history of lying about his opponents’ health (like when Hillary fell ill at the 9/11 remembrance ceremony, or what he’s now been saying about Biden’s health).
So we must be skeptical. We must always remain skeptical when it comes to Trump. He may have it. But it’s also possible he’s lying. That’s just a fact.
But why would he lie about this? What would he have to gain? I mean, it looks bad that he’s called it a hoax for seven months, and he totally mismanaged the government response — and now he has it? Doesn’t it look terrible that he’s spent months downplaying wearing masks, dismissing social distancing, holding large rallies filled with elderly, at-risk supporters and even killing his own supporters like Herman Cain? And doesn’t this go against his brand of always projecting (and exaggerating) his own strength, his health, his genetics, his virility? Yes. This is all true. He would not want to admit he‘s come down with a hoax.
But — he’s losing the election. And he knows it. It’s not 2016. He was hated in 2016, but he’s hated even more now. Millions of Americans are ON FIRE and on the verge of serving him up a major league ass-whooping and a record landslide defeat.
So he needs - badly - to totally change the conversation about this campaign.
And he just has.
Democrats, liberals, the media and others have always been wrong to simply treat him as a buffoon and a dummy and a jackass. Yes, he is all those things. But he’s also canny. He’s clever. He outfoxed Comey. He outfoxed Mueller. He outfoxed 20 Republicans in the GOP primary and then did the same to the Democrats, winning the White House despite receiving fewer votes than his opponent. He’s an evil genius and I raise the possibility of him lying about having COVID-19 to prepare us and counteract his game. He knows being sick tends to gain one sympathy. He’s not above weaponizing this.
He’s been lying about how soon a vaccine will be ready. What better way to hammer home that lie then by directing a saga in the final weeks before the election that culminates in the release of this “vaccine.”
The NY Times tax story was horrible for him. As was The Atlantic story about him calling American troops losers and suckers. There are a dozen more of these stories coming in October. Just last night, The New Yorker detailed how his campaign finance director (and Don Jr’s girlfriend) was fired from Fox News for....well...behaving like a typical Fox News host by sexually harassing her assistant and forcing Fox to pay a $4 million settlement to that assistant due to her behavior. And also, last night, there was CNN playing an audio recording of Melania talking shit about children separated from their parents at the border — AND talking shit about Christmas. Christmas!
These stories are about to be a daily occurrence. However, they may get less airtime and be less damaging since Trump and FLOTUS are now “sick” and supposed to be in our thoughts and prayers.
But most dangerously, HE MAY USE THIS TO PUSH FOR DELAYING/POSTPONING THE ELECTION. The constitution does not allow for this, but he doesn’t give a f*ck about the constitution. He and his thug Attorney General Barr have no shame and will stop at nothing to stay in power. He may even use this as an excuse for losing.
Then there’s this:
He may use his Covid as a pretext to drop out of the race and move Pence to the top of the ticket. Pence would temporarily become President, and then Pence could pre-emptively pardon Trump for all of his crimes.
Again, though, he may have COVID. He probably does. But never, ever, ever take him at his word and never, ever, ever underestimate his survival skills or the depths of his deception or his evil.
What can YOU do today? Make your plan to vote and stick to it. Question everything. And if you and I are finally convinced he has it, do NOT sit silent as he schemes how to use this illness for his benefit.
Finally, on a personal note: Stay alive Mr. President. Your exit from public life must happen in the right and decent way. You have many years to live. You have a child to raise. Grandchildren who need you. A base that loves you. And the families of nearly the quarter-million dead who might be alive today had you done your job, had you cared, had you not played politics with people's lives. Over 200,000 lost souls — and YOU KNEW! You told Woodward in February it was a plague. 200,000 dead because of decisions you made, because you denigrated science and ignored the doctors.
I’m certain you’re listening to them now.
Covid must not remove you. That’s our job. With a pen and a ballot.

2019 Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (preliminary round)
Many of my longtime followers will know what is below. And yes, it’s that time of year again!
There are a few folks I wanted to extend invites to that I wasn’t able to get to in time (because of stuff IRL). If you are listed (and are interested), let me know so I can sort you into a group as soon as possible: @dansmonarbre, @dog-of-ulthar, @fredsbarandgrill, @loveless422, @shadesofhappy, @somequeerdistortion, @thethirdman8. Otherwise, you will still be tagged for the MOABOS final anyways because of your prior participation in previous years.
As is the year-end tradition on my blog, there is an Oscar-like ceremony honoring some of the best achievements from movies that I saw for the first time in their entirety this calendar year (the "Movie Odyssey"). I’ve always considered MOABOS a musical thank-you for your moral support on and offline throughout the year.
An unspecified number of songs have already advanced to the final round. Twenty songs will compete in this preliminary round. Like every year there has been a preliminary, there are two groups - Group A and Group B. Even moreso than last year, songs from musicals dominate and, after a year where personal time has come at a premium, it has also resulted in the most monolingual field we’ve had in a preliminary.
INSTRUCTIONS IN THE GROUP YOU HAVE BEEN SORTED INTO, please rank (#1-10) at least five of your group's songs. Please consider (to the best of your ability): how musically interesting the song is (incl. and not limited to musical phrasing and orchestration); its lyrics; quality of performance; context within the film (contextual blurbs provided for those who haven’t seen these films); choreography/dance direction (if applicable); and the song's cultural impact/life outside the film (if applicable, and the least important factor). Imperfections in audio and video quality may not be used against any song. The top four songs in each group automatically advance to the final round. I reserve the right to pick 0-2 songs from one or both groups that finished outside the top four in their respective groups to contest the final round. This was never a true democracy, as you all know!
The deadline for submission is Tuesday, December 10 at 11 PM Pacific Time. That's Friday, December 11 at 1 AM Central Time / 2 AM Eastern Time / 7 AM GMT / 8 AM CET / 9 AM EET. This deadline may be pushed back if there are a large number of people who have not submitted in time - but I would rather not have that happen, especially because more people are going to be called in for the final round. Feel free to send in comments and reactions with your rankings - it’s always fun to read reactions to individual songs, and it usually makes the process (for everyone) more enjoyable! Tabulation details are under the read-more.
Take your time, and and listen more than once if you wish. Please pay attention to which group you have been sorted into. The songs are (“Song title”, composer and lyricist, film title):
GROUP A
“Can You Imagine That?”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Performed by Emily Blunt, Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson, and Nathanael Saleh
Shortly after Mary Poppins (Blunt) becomes the governess for the Banks children (Davies, Dawson, and Saleh), she draws a bath after the children have covered themselves in dirt. The bath, however, is infused with Mary Poppins’ signature magic, leading to a fantastical segment.
“Detroit”, music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, The Happiest Millionaire (1967)
Performed by John Davidson and Lesley Ann Warren
(partial use in film)
Lovebirds Cordy Biddle (Warren) and Angier “Angie” Buchanan Duke (Davidson in his film debut) have been discussing their future together. Angie does not want to inherit his father’s tobacco business - instead wishing to head to Detroit to be a part of the automotive industry (the film is set in 1916, as the city was booming because of the auto industry).
“Gay Paree”, music by Henry Mancini, lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, Victor/Victoria (1982)
Performed by Robert Preston
In this musical, Carroll “Toddy” Todd (Preston) is a gay performer at the Chez Lui nightclub in Paris. This songs appears shortly after the opening credits and a short introductory scene. The use of the word “gay” in this song may be interpreted however you wish.
“Honolulu Baby”, music and lyrics by Marvin Hatley, Sons of the Desert (1933)
(Initial performance) / (brief reprise) / (non-film version)
First performance by Ty Parvis; reprise by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy; full non-film version by The Beau Hunks
Laurel and Hardy have tricked their wives into believing they have taken a Hawaiian cruise rather than attending the national meeting of a fraternity known as the Sons of the Desert - their wives disapprove of the latter for reasons that give away too many jokes in one of the best (and funniest) films I saw all year. The reprise is part of a joke that I’d also rather not spoil.
“I Dug a Ditch”, music by Burton Lane, lyrics by Lew Brown and Ralph Freed, Thousands Cheer (1943)
Performed by the Kay Kyser Band, Kathryn Grayson, Georgia Carroll, Harry Babbitt, Sully Mason, M.A. Bogue, and chorus
NOTE: An entirely separate song, “Should I”, is integrated from 3:04-3:36.
Apologies for the text overlaying the video. The second half of Thousands Cheer is essentially an elaborate revue musical performance for American World War II troops in which the film’s initial pretense of attempting a story is entirely dropped. “I Dug a Ditch” is one of the songs appearing in the film’s second half.
“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again”, music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin, Rocketman (2019)
Performed by Elton John and Taron Egerton
This is the first song played over the end credits of this biopic of Elton John. This is John and Taupin’s (John’s songwriting partner through the 1960s-1990s) first collaboration outside the Sherlock Gnomes series for this decade.
“Into the Unknown”, music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Frozen II (2019)
(end credits version)
Performed by Idina Menzel and AURORA; end credits version performed by Panic! At the Disco
Some years after being crowned Queen of Arendelle (which happened at the end of Frozen), Elsa hears an eerie voice calling out to her - a voice that will connect Elsa to her parents’ tragic fate. The voice’s melody will reprise throughout the film’s score.
“The Shady Dame from Seville”, music by Henry Mancini, lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, Victor/Victoria (1982)
(Initial performance) / (reprise to be watched at your own spoiler-y risk)*
Performed by Julie Andrews; reprise by Robert Preston
*watch at your own spoiler-y risk because it gives away the film’s comical musical ending
Victoria Grant (Andrews), after making her Parisian debut playing a man named “Victor” who is impersonating a woman, has become the hit vaudeville act of Paris. This is one of her signature performances. Preston’s reprise - which appears near the film’s conclusion - was done in one take, hence his sweaty and fatigued appearance at the end.
“Trường Tương Tư”, music and lyrics by Leon Le, Song Lang (2018, Vietnam)
Performed by Isaac and Liên Bỉnh Phát
Lyrics in Vietnamese
English translation and context are in the link.
“(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, Mary Poppins Returns
Performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda
This is the opening song in Mary Poppins Returns. Lamplighter Jack (Miranda) is turning out the London gaslights as night turns into morning, as he bikes through the city’s streets - filled with indicators of the Great Depression, industrial pollution, and the general overcast weather that tends to be associated with England. Jack reprises the songs a few times across the film and the song is quoted in the film’s score.
Group A participants include: @addaellis, @cokwong, @halfwaythruthedark, @myluckyerror, @phendranaedge, @plus-low-overthrow, @theybecomestories, @umgeschrieben, @yellanimal. Between six to ten others will be participating in this group, including myself and my sister.
GROUP B
“Crazy World”, music by Henry Mancini, lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, Victor/Victoria (1982)
Performed by Julie Andrews
Victoria Grant (Andrews) is a woman playing a man named “Victor” who is impersonating a woman. Victoria, as Victor, has become the hit vaudeville act of Paris. This is Victoria’s first performance as “Victor” not pretending to be a woman. Is your head spinning yet?
“East Bound and Down”, music and lyrics by Jerry Reed and Dick Feller, Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
Performed by Jerry Reed
This is the theme song for this comedy, which also describes the plot somewhat. Smokey and the Bandit is about two truckers - “Bandit” (Burt Reynolds) and “Snowman” (Reed) - who have been offered $80,000 by a rich Texan to pick up 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana, Texas and return to Atlanta within twenty-eight hours. In 1977, Coors was only found in the Western U.S. and transporting it across Southern state lines was illegal (giving Coors a mystique in the Eastern U.S.).
“Fortuosity”, music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, The Happiest Millionaire (1967)
Performed by Tommy Steele
Irish immigrant John Lawless (Steele) is one day off his Transatlantic ferry and is soon to take up a job as the Biddle family’s butler. This is the first song in The Happiest Millionaire, performed shortly after the opening credits. The song is also on the musical rotation for Disney parks’ Main Street and is reprised during the film and quoted in its score.
“Fun and Fancy Free (I’m a Happy-Go-Lucky Fellow)”, music and lyrics by Bennie Benjamin, George David Weiss, Ned Washington, and Eliot Daniel Fun and Fancy Free (1947)
Performed by Dinah Shore, chorus, and Cliff Edwards (as Jiminy Cricket)
Played over the opening credits; the main musical ideas are used a few times in the film’s score. This is Jiminy Cricket’s second appearance in a canonical Disney Animation Studios feature film.
“The Joint Is Really Jumpin’ in Carnegie Hall”, music and lyrics by Roger Edens, Ralph Blane, and Hugh Martin, Thousands Cheer (1943)
Performed by Judy Garland and Jose Iturbi
The second half of Thousands Cheer - where this song is found - is essentially an elaborate revue musical performance for American World War II troops in which the film’s initial pretense of attempting a story is entirely dropped.
“The Next Right Thing”, music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Frozen II (2019)
Performed by Kristen Bell
Anna (Bell) has seemingly lost her friends and her sister at what is the lowest point in the film. Uncertain what to do, she recalls a small piece of advice that leads her forward.
“Nowhere to Go but Up”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Performed by Angela Lansbury, Ben Whishaw, Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson, Nathanael Saleh, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Jeremy Swift, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, David Warner, Jim Norton, and company
On a sunny spring day, the Banks family and Mary Poppins go out to the local park to make a day of it. Certain non-lyrical inclusions in this song cannot be explained without spoiling the film. This is the final song of Mary Poppins Returns.
“Sương Chiều”, music and lyrics by Leon Le and Hoàng Song Việt, Song Lang (2018, Vietnam)
Performed by Isaac and Tú Quyên
Lyrics in Vietnamese
English translation and context are in the link.
“Trip a Little Light Fantastic”, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, Mary Poppins Returns
Performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Blunt, Tarik Frimpong, Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson, Nathanael Saleh, and company
After being scolded by their father, the Banks children are taken home by Mary Poppins (Blunt). Along the way, they encounter their friend, lamplighter Jack (Miranda), as they take a lengthy detour. The cycling skills seen in this number are probably anachronistic.
“Woodstock”, music and lyrics by Joni Mitchell, Woodstock (1970)
Performed by Crosby Stills, Nash & Young
This song appears in the end credits to Woodstock - the official documentary film for the eponymous August 1969 musical festival.
Group B participants include: @emilylime5, @ideallaedi, @introspectivemeltdown, @maximiliani, @mindo80, @themusicmoviesportsguy, @nazur, @stephdgray, and @underblackwings. Between six to ten others will be participating in this group, including myself and my sister.
If you have any questions or comments regarding the process or the songs involved, you may contact me at any time in any way you prefer. If you are having difficulty accessing the videos (especially if it is region-locked), please let me know as soon as you can.
Thank you all for being amazing followers and friends, and I thank you for your participation and support for the Movie Odyssey, this blog, and for me personally - no matter how long I’ve known you or in what capacity. I didn’t do as much outreach this year due to personal reasons, but I hope we have a healthy amount of participation. You will all be tagged for the final round regardless of your participation here. If turnout in one group is lagging behind compared to another, I may ask some of the more senior participants to participate in the other group, too. There is no pressure if you can’t do this, everyone. Thank you all again, and happy listening!
TABULATION
This preliminary round uses a points-based, ranked choice method which has been used since the first time I asked friends, tumblr followers, and family to help out. A respondent’s first choice receives 10 points, the second choice receives 9, the third choice receives 8, etc. The winner is the song that ends up with the most total points. This method, for the first time ever, will not be used for the final round. Tiebreakers for above: 1) total points earned; 2) total #1 votes; 3) placement on my ballot; 4) placement on my sister’s ballot; 5) tie declared

With a pen and a ballot."

So Now Trump Has Earned Your Trust? A Note of Covid Caution from Michael Moore....There is one absolute truth about Trump: He is a consistent, absolute, unrelenting, fearless, and professional liar. What better way to hammer home that lie then by directing a saga in the final weeks before the election that culminates in the release of this “vaccine.” The NY Times tax story was horrible for him. As was The Atlantic story about him calling American troops losers and suckers. There are a dozen more of these stories coming in October. Just last night, The New Yorker detailed how his campaign finance director (and Don Jr’s girlfriend) was fired from Fox News for....well...behaving like a typical Fox News host by sexually harassing her assistant and forcing Fox to pay a $4 million settlement to that assistant due to her behavior. basic bio
There’s something deep in Katherine's bones which prompts her to always want to looking at something closer. Like an invisible string tugging at her and pulling her nearer. And she follows often times without realising it.
Alas, things have the propensity to break in her hands, even when she’s being careful.
She doesn’t know how or why but it often seems to happen, and she doesn’t know why she can’t help herself from reaching out and wanting to hold things in her hands and inspect them closely ( even if it’s only to put them down a couple seconds later ).
This is how she manages to break her mother’s elegant mechanical wristwatch (given to her by her mother, who got it from her grandmother). It was a piece unlike any other, something so different from anything her young eyes had laid on that she couldn’t resist having a closer look. Her fingers moved slowly, carefully not to grasp the watch too hard - she was even careful not to touch the glass with her fingers as to not leave a print. She didn’t need to know what she was holding was an art deco antique, or that the twinkling stones adorning it were diamond and sapphires; just by looking at it there was something in her that told her what she had in her hands was precious.
She was so careful not to grasp it too hard that it had slipped right through her fingers when one of her siblings walked into the room, startling her.
She’s upset, her mother is upset. She cries, her mother doesn’t. She apologies once twice five ten times but her mother’s too busy fussing over the watch to pay attention. It’s a desperate feeling that begins to take over her chest, consuming ever fiber of her being entirely, head to toe, making her heart beat faster and faster, and all acerbated by the lack of acknowledgement and reassurance she's getting.
It’s an episode she should have been too young to remember, but she does nevertheless, in the back of her brain. Not the details of it but the feeling it left and which still lingers: things - family legacies - take precedence over her.
                                             --------------
With her there never seems to be an in between, and it's difficult  to keep herself distracted or in check in a healthy way, especially when her emotions are running high.
She figures out at an early age ( too early of an age ) that certain things sooth her - shopping trips, discussing nail colours and hair styles, what's in and what's out... it's harmless and easy. There's no need for substance or real discussion. It's all dopamine hits and she leans into those habits like they're a crutch.  ( Does she really need another dress? A new pair of shoes? She finds herself thinking about it at times. Does she? Doesn't she have enough? Don't so many things in her closet still have their tags on? What's the point of it? What's the point of thinking about it? She smothers those thoughts out by flipping through catalogs. )
Then come the parties.
Privately, she can’t help but to feel like the biggest cliché there is sometimes.
A rich girl who loves parties – what else is new?  But it’s the truth.   There is something deeply freeing about a good proper party. The kind where phones are left at the door, everyone knows everyone, and what happens there stays there. There’s always gossip, always something that goes slightly awry even if it’s turned into comic relief – but it rarely bleeds into the next day. Not openly anyway. For all the drama that might happen, everyone has something to lose, and the same thing to protect: their (family’s) reputation.
She finds it therapeutic to be in a place like that. Laughing loudly, stealing kisses, dancing on tables – she always sleeps better after, not tossing and turning in bed for literal hours before sleep finally arrives.
                                           --------------
for someone so chronically genuine, katherine's whole life has felt like a big performance.
”family first” was the motto of her childhood. you don’t go against family, you don’t discuss family with outsiders, you do everything to make family proud. (katherine’s parents have always ran their family like he did their business, and they did an outstanding job with no repercussions - on paper, that is.)
the only kind of problems katherine doesn't have are money problems. wealthy, low-key walking disaster with an outfit that's always on point but a brain that's always a mess (therapy and medication help though - sometimes), she's truly trying her best to be a good person but often comes up short in all sorts of ways.
the simple truth is that there’s no bettering her life in a lasting long-term way without fully recognizing her own mental illness and the toxicity of her family, and those are two things she can barely recognize let alone talk about or battle against. so she keeps holding things in or suppressing parts of herself, feeling like she’s constantly about to burst at the seams, never actually patching any problems up but just slapping some tape over them. and she always does burst eventually, which usually leads to a nervous breakdown, after which she tells herself she was just being dramatic, and the cycle keeps going.
katherine can easily befriend people from all walks of life, but bringing them all into her life is nearly impossible unless they fit the standard of the kind of people her family and childhood friends would approve of. even if she feels this is wrong, she lacks the strength to go against it.

Women in Folk - McKain Lakey
Tumblr media
Hey there!
Katie here with the next installment of the ‘Women in Folk’ blog. Today’s interviewee is McKain Lakey!
McKain is a freelance folk musician who primarily plays solo. She started playing guitar at age 11, writing original material at 12, banjo at 13 and has been singing since before she can remember. While she’s been mostly a solo artist (who toured for 8 months last year), she used to be in an old-time music duo called Woolly Breeches, and has made appearances with other bands as well; her electro-folk duo with Aseem Suri, Wyman Street, will be releasing their debut single June 30th. McKain came out with a 4-track solo EP entitled West about a year ago. While the EP stands on its own, McKain mentioned that one of the tracks entitled Sadie’s Song, became the beginning to an entirely different project she’s working towards now;
“One of the songs on the EP was inspired by a murder ballad entitled ‘Little Sadie’. Most murder ballads tend to represent only one side of the story. The stories are often told by the person that survived - the person doing the killing. That’s the side of the story that gets passed down from generation to generation. In researching a lot of old ballads, I found myself pretty frustrated by the lack of women’s stories, women’s voices. so I decided to write a response to the ballad of Little Sadie, taking it and re-writing it from Sadie’s perspective as she’s dying. The song talks directly to the person that killed her. Since writing ‘Sadie’s Song’ I’ve been working to develop that concept into a bigger project, which will hopefully culminate in a full-length album eventually. I hope to make it a collaborative project with other women musicians who are doing similar work.”
McKain did a 10-day writing residency in February with Hedgebrook in support of this project where she researched many of the old stories from which these murder ballads came. Her biggest musical influences for this album are “bad*ss old-time ladies” such as Hazel Dickens, Ola Belle Reed, and Ginny Hawker.
She attended the Berklee College of Music where her primary focus was on Audio Engineering, and it was being on the “fringes” of the Roots program there that introduced her to Passim, where she has since given three shows.
The next part of the interview reflects on her experiences of being a woman engineer and artist. (*strong language is used in the following interview*)
[full interview under the cut]
Club Passim: Talk a little about your experiences as a female artist in the Folk/Americana genre.
McKain Lakey: I’ve worked for many years as an audio engineer so most of my more pointed experiences with gender in music have been on that side of things. That is a big reason I became a performer actually. I did want to pursue my own music but it became pretty clear to me that that was my career path after delving into the world of live sound and getting burnt out from dealing with misogyny all the time.
Even though there are still a lot of stigmas and challenges to being a woman performer, I find it is a lot easier to be a woman performer than be a woman audio engineer. We are definitely underrepresented in both areas but I definitely experienced a lot more blatant sexism as an audio engineer than as a performer. But I really wouldn’t have it any other way. I feel like the experience of being a woman really informs the music I make and informs my perspective in a different way. I feel like we’re coming to a time where that perspective is becoming more valued, and it feels like a really ripe moment to make an impact as an artist by being true to those experiences as a woman in the world. It’s a cool time to be a woman artist.
Being a part of this community of women folk musicians reminds me of when I wrestled in high school. I was on a women’s wrestling team which was still a pretty new concept, so most schools didn’t have a team with girls that filled every weight class. This meant we wound up wrestling for each other’s teams a lot because if your team had two people in one weight class you would loan a wrestler to a team that didn’t have someone in that weight class. It really felt like a ‘wild west’ of women’s wrestling. But what was cool was that whenever I went to a tournament, there was always this huge sense of camaraderie. Even though we were technically in competition with each other, we were also rooting for each other because we played for each other’s teams all the time. You’re all in it together as women wrestlers, and I feel that same sense of camaraderie within women in folk music. There’s always this sigh of relief when you see other women, like “oh, my people”. The bond is very strong for ladies in folk music and that feels very cool.
CP: Do you notice a difference in how you’re treated by other artists, venues, audiences, and industry professionals before vs. after you play?
ML: Yes. Most of the time before I play people don’t take me seriously, but after my set they’ll understand I know what I’m doing. I’ve had a lot of luck with different venues that are very supportive, but every once in a while you have to play that sh*tty gig where no one really cares until you play your set and have a chance to make an impact.
CP: Often, all-male bands have a heavy female fanbase that buys merch, go to shows, support, etc. Do you feel your music is supported by men in this same way? Why or why not do you think that is?
ML: I would say so. If I look at the statistics online of the people who are streaming my music (though I don’t think it is a very good indicator), it’s more women than men, but it’s actually pretty evenly split. At shows, I hear positive responses from both men and women. Actually, for the song I wrote about Little Sadie, I get more comments from men telling me, “Hey that was a really interesting perspective. I’m going to think about that more, let’s have a conversation”.
CP: Incredible classical artists such as classical pianist Yuja Wang use their performance attire as a way to express themselves. This provocative style of dress has been viewed as “distracting” from the music by some. What are your personal thoughts on women using fashion and sex-appeal as a means of bringing in more audience members and assisting in selling their music?
ML: I don’t think it’s my place to judge what any woman wears on stage, period. Whatever your personal style is, whatever is authentic to you is what you should be doing. Women claiming their sexuality is a very powerful thing, so if that’s a big part of your art, then f*****g go for it, that’s rad. I don’t see any problem with that.
There’s a big focus on what women wear, but that conversation distracts from what they’re actually saying with their music. Maybe they’re trying to make a statement with what they’re wearing and we’re completely missing the statement because we’re focusing on the fact that it was “provocative”.
That is definitely something I struggle with as a woman artist. ‘What is the appropriate stage attire that is going to be reflective of who I am as an artist but still comes across as professional’? It’s something I think about a lot, and it frustrates me that men don’t have to think about that. They can show up in jeans and a t-shirt and no one’s going to really think less of them. I also struggle with what feels authentic to me vs. what comes across as authentic.  That’s something I encountered a lot in my duo Woolly Breeches- we often experimented with gender-bending, wearing a lot of men’s clothing. If I were a man I would wear pearl snap shirts every day, but wearing pearl snap shirts every gig as a woman was often seen as a gimmick. That’s the line that I struggle with and feel a lot of frustration towards. It’s completely uneven between the genders with stuff like that.
CP: In your opinion, how can men be more aware or informed about their women co-workers and collaborators in the music industry?
ML: Listening is a big part of it. On the personal accountability side, I’ve been trying to be okay with having any conversation that I would have with a female artist with a male artist. I think sometimes there’s this weird secret club of ladies where we’ll talk about our experiences of being woman musicians together, but we’re not super visible to our male peers. I’ve been trying to focus on being very transparent with where I’m at and not catering the things I talk about based on the gender of who I’m talking to. That has done a lot to spur conversations with male peers who have the potential of being strong allies but don’t necessarily know how to do that.
It’s definitely a two-way street, though. Males need to be actively listening to women. That goes in any setting. From listening when women are advocating for themselves and paying them what they’re actually worth, to listening to us in musical settings. Dudes - don’t just play over women musicians, make sure you’re listening to woman bandleaders just as well as you’d listen to a male bandleader. There are a lot of really subtle ways that men are socialized to ignore women or downplay their contributions. The simple act of listening and being present for women musicians is the foundation of implementing change.
CP: What do you do in a situation when you feel disrespected by the artists/co-workers you’re surrounded by?
ML: It’s very circumstantial. I am really picky with who I spend time with. Going to Berklee, I learned really quickly that I just don’t believe in forgiving a**holes based on their musical merit. I can always find another good musician to play with or hang out with who is a good person too. There are so many amazing musicians who are working hard to make this world a more equitable place, so when I see people being disrespectful, I just leave it. I don’t need to be in this situation, there are so many other places I can go where I WILL be respected.
However, there are those moments where you do need to confront the situation right away. The introduction to a person has been the biggest point of asserting myself actually. I learned this as an audio engineer. If I didn’t assert myself as having power and knowledge within the handshake of meeting an artist, then they would walk all over me for the rest of the night. I’ve definitely carried that with me in my interactions with other people. You have to introduce yourself as someone who is friendly, but also won’t take anyone else’s s**t. It immediately puts a damper on any further disrespect that might occur. That’s usually how I confront the issue before it even happens, though it sucks that that has to happen in the first place.
CP: What message do you want to display as a performer in folk music?
ML: To have respect and compassion for people’s stories. A big part of my work has been exploring perspectives of marginalized people throughout history. I focus mostly on women and queer folks because those are identities I carry. But at the heart of it, it’s about going into your interactions with people with kindness and compassion and to be present for the people you’re around. In the end, it’s all about respect.
CP: What words of wisdom/encouragement do you have for aspiring women in folk?
ML: The women in the folk industry, both musicians and tech, are a really good group of people. Having so many amazing women mentors, colleagues and friends that I’ve gotten to know through this scene is what I cherish most. Collaborating with these women is one of the best parts about doing what I do.
My biggest words of encouragement would be ‘Welcome!’ There are people here that really love you and want to support you. Your best resources are the women around you. We have to keep working on building this community together because it’s a really important one to have. There is a lot of potential for us to express ourselves through this genre, we just have to dive in.
                                                           ~
Perhaps my favorite thing McKain said in the interview was that she doesn’t believe in forgiving people for their attitude or behavior based on their musical merit. While attending Eastman I have most definitely run across this issue a number of times. Being an incredible musician does not excuse nor warrant the poor treatment of friends, peers, and mentors. Unfortunately, this still seems to be lost on many musicians today, men and women alike, though in my experience this attitude tends to appear more frequently in men.
Thanks, McKain for bringing this up and sharing your thoughts and experiences! We can’t wait to see your projects come into fruition.
Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for the next installment of the ‘Women in Folk’ blog!

TESTIMONIAL RECEIVED IN OCTOBER 2003: "Hello, My name is Eric, and I have recently purchased several of your systems, after friend made the recommendation. I am so glad that I trusted my friends judgment, and came to you guys! I am a freshmen in college, and actually, I'd been out of school for a couple of years already, and I was worried that I'd have trouble working full time while still keeping up with my studies. Well, when I said this to my best friend, the first place she directed me to was this web site! I was skeptical at first, but I decided to try your method out anyway. I got both the "accelerated learning/instant genius" CD and another of your products that I wanted in order to make the most out of my experience, "Crystal Clear Visualization", which actually programs you into being able to mentally recreate everything you experience (like having a photographic memory, only it effects ALL of your senses!) Anyway, to make a long story short, I followed my instructions and listened to each at least once a day. My first set of finals was this past week, and I just got my grades back, and I ACED EVERYTHING! Not just A's, but we are talking 98's and 100's! I owe it all to you! I have already purchased several more of your systems, and I now have confidence that my life will forever be changed for the better thanks you! You can quote me on this, in fact, please do! I want everyone else out there to know how QUICKLY these programs work, and just how powerful they really are! Thanks again, for everything! - Eric R."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reed Received this testimonial on August 8, 2002 -- "I would just like to say that last year I purchased the CMCS [Complete Mind Control System] from you and it has been an excellent program. IT DOES WORK I was totally amazed. Thank you and looking forward to future purchases."
"I don't know if you remember me or not, but I had got a cassette from you about 2 months ago or longer. On Mind Control On Others. This tape is so awesome it worked for me 3 days after I received it.  """EXCELLENT""" Bright Blessings To You, and Thank You for doing this making these tapes. Your an awesome person. Thanks, D. D." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Man the work you guy's are putting out is getting better and better. I'm blown away with the latest i received.. has me buzzing all over.. it was #2 in the seduction series "automatic flirt / pheromone"  Ive studied hypnosis for about 4 years now.. "Erickson.. etc." that latest CD is da'bomb.  This evening at the Community College i go to, i was a flirting machine.. all had a blast during our breaks!" -- regarding Reed's Automatic Flirt CD
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I have just run through your 4 CD "Mental Psychic Seduction System" and I just wanted to say that your expert use of Dual Binaural Beat Technology, much like Shamanic drumming, makes them the most powerful recorded hypnotic inductions I have ever experianced, more powerful than either 'Major Mark' Cunninghams "Hypnotic Awakenings" or evan Dr Richard Bandler's "Personal Enhancement Series". What is truly fascinating to me, though, was the immediately noticeable effects of the "Mental Psychic Seduction System" on my everyday encounters with other people. As far as I could tell, I was behaving just the same as I was before the inductions and yet, everyone I met after running through the System, especially women, reacted differently to me, in a much more relaxed, open and friendly way. At first, I assumed that the "Mental Psychic Seduction System" had simply enhanced my rapport skills at an unconscious level, which would be worth the price of the System alone. In fact, I found that when I deliberately set out to assertively lead rather than pace, I found that women were suprisingly happy to go along with whatever I suggested! Beyond these amazing new skills, I have found fabulous new synchronicities occurring on an ever increasing basis, as if the Universe itself was lending a friendly hand in my wishes and desires. Worth the investment many times over!!!" P.K. Received August 28, 2002

Your First 100 Million Dollars
I told him not to do it.
It's too powerful.
They won't believe it's possible, and if they do, they'll change the world.
"Let them use it to their benefit" he said.
I still don't think you should ever release this to the general public.
Fine.
OK.
Do you think they'll believe enough to actually USE them?
If they do, imagine what will happen!
I know.
I guess the real question is...
Can You Imagine Having 100 MILLION DOLLARS Now?
If you can, then Reed made the right choice.
Against my advice, Reed Byron has released a new NLP Hypnosis Audio, AAT Audio, and Sleep Programming Audio called
"Your First 100 Million Dollars"
Shhhhh, Don't tell anyone, but . . .
It was originally for Platinum members of his Inner-Circle.
This is the first set of "Platinum" Audios he has ever released . . . and I think it might be his last because all the Platinum Members are giving him pressure to keep these discs secure and safe from everyone else out there. You see . . .
You can't get these Audios anywhere.  (They used to be on CD - now they are only available here).  They are nowhere to be found.
I promise.
You won't find them online.
Unless you know a Platinum member of this new hypnosis club, you'll never ever see a copy.
So if you are ready to take action when the right opportunity arrives, then take action now.
If you want to use Reed's Platinum Inner Circle System to create Your First 100 Million Dollars.
Then you should subscribe today.
[Click Here for $1 Instant Access to Your First 100 Million Dollars Now NLP Hypnosis System]

What Is Reverb?: The Complete Guide to Mixing’s Most Useful Effect
What Is Reverb?: The Complete Guide to Mixing’s Most Useful Effect: via LANDR Blog
So what is reverb? Well, reverberation is all around us all the time.
It’s the natural result of sound waves interacting with every surface—hard, soft, tall, short and everything in between.
Every sound we hear is informed by the space it is heard in. In fact, our ears are used to it… Without that sense of space sounds often seem unnatural, thin, or hollow.
However, when recording in a studio environment, you use specific techniques and tools to reduce as much of the external acoustics as possible in order to capture the purest sound.
It’s good practice because you want your mixes clean to maximize your ability to edit and enhance them during the mixing phase. Cleaner sounds mean a better mix, and a better mix means a better master, so it all counts.
But if our ears are accustomed to sounds in space, don’t you want some room sound on your tracks? Great question…
The simple answer is yes! After you’ve cleaned your tracks, balanced the levels, and assembled your mix, you need that sense of space.
That’s where your reverbs comes in.
Why do you need reverb?
A strong understanding of reverb will help you become a better mix engineer and get better mixes.
Reverb is one of the most versatile effects in mixing because it’s applicable as a utility and creative tool. It provides that intangible sense of depth, fatness, and intrigue that immerses listeners and glues your mixes together.
Reverb provides that intangible sense of depth, fatness, and intrigue that immerses listeners and glues your mixes together.
But reverb is a huge subject, so there’s a lot to learn. In this guide I’ll show you how to control this powerful effect and use it to get your best possible mix.
What is reverb?
Reverberation is the effect where millions decaying reflections of sounds off of multiple surfaces heard after the initial sound source.
What does reverb do?
How reverb works can get into a whole bunch of math that’s super fascinating but I won’t cover it here.
What is important to know right now is what reverb can do for you!
Reverb provides space and depth to your mix, but it also gives the listener important clues about where the sound is taking place and where the listener is in relation to the sound.
Reverb lets you transport a listener to a concert hall, a cave, a cathedral, or an intimate performance space.
It also allows for natural (or added) harmonics of a sound source to shine through and gives your mix extra warmth and space.
Here’s a simple loop without and reverb reverb (dry):
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Loop_No_Reverb.wav
Now listen to the same loop with reverb (wet):
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Loop_With_Reverb.wav
As you can hear, the wet loop has overall better feel and texture than the dry loop. The synth line is smoother and flows together better and the overall mix gives off a nice sense of space. This is all thanks to reverb!
Nowadays, we almost exclusively use digital audio effects and VSTs to process sound. But the classic aesthetics of analog reverb are still what our digital versions try to recreate, so understanding analog and digital techniques are vital!
Reverb types and how to mix with them
Below are a list of common reverb types with audio examples. I’ll use the same sample of a conga drum to show you how each reverb type works:
Here’s a dry (no reverb) conga sample:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_No_Reverb.wav
Now let’s apply each different type of reverb to our conga sample to hear how it reacts.
Hall Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Hall.wav
Hall reverb simulates the acoustics of a concert hall or other large reverberant space. This is the most classic reverb. It’s great for classical, pop, and more traditional musical genres.
Use it on an entire mix or buss to glue tracks together or put a grouping of instruments in the same sound space.
Chamber Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Chamber.wav
Chamber reverb simulates the acoustics of an echo chamber or physical space made for analog reverb recordings.
It can also sound very neutral while still filling out the frequency range of a mix. Chamber reverb works best with small ensembles, classical music, and pop music. It’s useful in other mix situations as well, so trust your ears and experiment.
Trust your ears and experiment.
Room Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Room.wav
Room reverb simulates the acoustics of a mid-to-large-sized room and gives your tracks clarity.
Room works well for solo instruments—especially drums, acoustic guitars, piano, strings, and vocals.
Overall, room reverb lets you make individual instruments stand out in the mix making it great for any genre.
Live or Stage Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Stage.wav
Live reverb simulates the acoustics of a performance stage. It’s a classic choice for rock and pop music or any mix that needs to keep some of that live feel to it.
Stage or live reverb works well for individual instruments or for gluing an entire mix together.
Church or Cathedral Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Cathedral.wav
Cathedral reverb simulates the acoustics of a large, stone space with high ceilings.
It’s a fantastic choice for choirs, string ensembles, organs, epic leads or any other sound you want to put in a large, reflective space.
Spring Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Spring.wav
Spring reverb simulates the acoustics of an analog spring reverb device still commonly found in guitar amps.
It sounds great on rock, jazz, blues, and metal as well as electric guitar and rock organs. Spring reverb is one of the most common types of reverb because of its many applications across genres.
Spring reverb gives instruments that signature metallic “boingyness” that brings tracks to life.
Spring reverb gives instruments that signature metallic “boingyness” that brings tracks to life.
Plate Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Plate.wav
Plate reverb simulates the acoustics of an analog plate reverb device. It’s a great choice for pop music, especially for instrument sections like percussion, brass, reeds, and vocals.
Like spring reverb, plate has been in use for decades because of its many applications across mixing styles.
Gated Reverb:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_GatedVerb.wav
Gated reverb cuts off the decay trail of a reverb using a noise gate. Gated reverb was especially popular in the 80’s in rock and pop ballads.
It gives a distinct “explosive” echo, providing powerful emphasis to any sound. Use gated reverb on drums, bass, guitar, synths, and vocals to get that distinct reverb pop.
Convolution Reverb:
Convolution reverb uses a digital file of a recording in an actual space to simulate that specific space’s acoustic properties.
It lets you approach your reverbs with a DIY attitude—record any space’s reverberation qualities and apply them to your track!
For example: Here’s what my congas would sound like in my bathroom:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Bathroom.wav
So now that you understand how each reverb types sounds, it’s time to put them to use. Applying reverb properly starts with understanding your reverb parameters.
Here’s a breakdown of what to tweak on your ‘verbs.
Reverb Parameters
Understanding your parameters is vital for applying reverb correctly in your mix. In most cases ‘parameters’ is just a fancy word for knobs.
This list will breakdown some of the more common reverb parameters, but if you don’t see a certain parameter here, check your manual!
Common Reverb Parameters:
Type
Type refers to the previously mentioned types of digital reverb, but there are many more as well.
Type can normally be found on multi-effects processors or reverbs that include different types of reverb on one unit.
Size
Often referred to as depth or room size, size indicates the size of the room you’ll be putting your sound in with your reverb effect. The larger the size, the longer your reverb reflections will get.
Decay
Also known as reverb time or RT60, Decay refers to the amount of time it takes for the reflections of your signal to run out of energy and stop.
Understanding your parameters is vital for applying reverb correctly in your mix.
Pre-Delay
The distance, or time, between your initial sound source and the first early reflections.
Early Reflections
Sometimes called initial reflections or pre-echoes, Early Reflections settings determine the level of the very first reverb reflections you’ll hear.
Early Reflections act independently of the rest of your reverb, so being able to distinguish between the two is important.
Here’s what early reflection sound like on our conga loop:
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Early_Reflections.wav
Diffusion
Diffusion, also known as shape, represents the complexity of the room the reverb takes place in.
More complex rooms mean more surfaces to bounce off of and thus more diffusion. Diffusion also controls the density of the amount of reverbs, allowing you to create a more washy effect or have many distinct echoes.
Mix
Mix, also known as wet/dry mix, controls how much of your wet signal (signal with reverb) is mixed into your dry signal (without reverb).
The mix parameter is necessary because reverbs will be patched side-chained.
How to use Reverb to make your mixes soar
There are few hard rules for using reverbs, but the execution is ultimately up to you and what your mix needs. A good rule of thumb for reverb is always: less is more.
Too much reverb will give you a muddy and unintelligible mix, especially through loss of contrast in your low-end frequencies.
A good rule of thumb for reverb is always: less is more.
Hot Tip: never record with reverb—always add it later. Removing reverb is a tough process, but adding more is always an option.
If you ever need to remove reverb from a recording, read our guide on using noise gates to get started.
Ultimately, finding the sweet spot in the type of reverb that suits your track is key: Reverb will give your tracks the warmth, depth, and immersive character that will instantly add a professional-level quality and coherence to your mix.
Here’s how to setup a reverb in 8 simple steps:
How to use reverb in 8 steps
1: Patch sidechain
Create a separate return track and patch your reverb inline on this track. Use the sends from the track that you want reverb on, to send the dry, un-effected signal to the track that has the reverb patched inline.
You should now hear your reverb! If you need a quick refresher on sends and returns, read our sends and returns guide.
2: Select your reverb type
If your particular reverb has preset types, test all of them that it has available—It could be one, none, or it could be several depending on your reverb—and get a feel for their unique characteristics.
Ask yourself: where is the ideal space I want my sound in?
Select the type that best suits the general needs of your mix or individual instrument. Ask yourself: where is the ideal space I want my sound in? What extra quality will make this instrument/mix gel in a cohesive way?
My Ableton reverb doesn’t have preset types, so I’ll be setting the parameters manually! I’m going to add some reverb to my conga drums to help thicken them up and give a sense of space.
3: Set your size
The Size parameter (selected above) allows you to control the size of the space the listener will perceive your sound in.
The bigger the size, the longer the reverb will take to occur, and vice versa for smaller size.
The bigger the size, the longer the reverb will take to occur.
Size also affects the stereo image, with larger rooms usually giving a wider stereo image. Thus, the size parameter allows you to scale from longer, more expansive sounding reverb down to shorter, more intimate, and narrow reflections.
Setting your Size parameter in relation to your Decay (see Step 6) is the key combo with reverb, so prepare to fiddle with these two steps a bit.
4: Set your decay
Decay is the most important part of your reverb because it sets the amount of time it takes your reverb to return to silence.
Setting it too long leads to most of the problems associated with reverb and muddy mixes. When the reverb continues for too long, all the many iterations blend together and you can’t tell one sound from another—this is when you’ll know your reverb has gone too far.
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conga_Crazy_Decay.wav
As I mentioned before, Decay is traditionally scaled in relation to Size: larger rooms tend to have longer decays, so setting a large size with a long decay or a small size with a short decay is typical.
Most presets will likely do this automatically. But adjusting the two independently can create some really cool effects. So don’t be shy to go against conventional wisdom.
Set your decay time inversely to the amount of wet reverb signal you’ll add to your mix.
Reverbs with shorter decays have more freedom to be very loud because they will end quickly and not stick around muddying your mix. Reverbs with longer decays should be kept at a lower volume, otherwise your mix can sound like it’s lost in the grand canyon.
Reverbs with longer decays should be kept at a lower volume, otherwise your mix can sound like it’s lost in the grand canyon.
Hot Tip: For busy arrangements, use reverbs with shorter decays on individual instruments in order to keep their unique qualities crisp and clear.
5: Set your pre-delay
Pre-Delay gives you some space between your dry signal and the wet reverb signal.
A lower pre-delay time will give little or no time between dry signal and your reverb—thus simulating a small room—but can make your reverb messier.
Be careful, echoes can interfere with the rhythm, tempo or groove of a musical piece.
Mid-sized pre-delays will give a slight delay to your reverb, simulating a larger space and keeping the dry signal and reverb clear of each other, removing muddiness.
6: Set your early reflections level
Early reflections (represented above as the yellow circle in the Spin section) tend to sound more like echoes than normal reverb so treat them as such—if you want to create an echo or doubling effect, louder early reflections are excellent for this.
But be careful, echoes can interfere with the rhythm, tempo or groove of a musical piece. Stick to a lower volume to allow for easier blending.
7: Set your diffusion level
Diffusion allows you to add (or remove) texture from your reverb. In the example above, diffusion levels are represented in the diffusion network section of the reverb.
Higher diffusion levels simulate a more complex space with many obstructions (think of a packed concert venue). It also creates a smoother, warmer, more coloured sound.
Reverb gives a soul to your mix,
Lower diffusion levels simulate a basic shape with unobstructed, flat, reflective surfaces (think of an empty garage).
Lower levels create a clear, bright, less coloured sound. Diffusion can also affect the Decay time of the reverb, so this gives you another option to smooth out your reverb tails.
Hot Tip: Use a high diffusion settings to remove metallic clangs from percussion instruments.
8: Set your mix level
Your mix level (wet/dry) is overall your most important parameter.
It determines how your reverb is going to interact with the other elements of your mix and how much of your effect you’re folding back into your session.
Adjust the wet/dry mix level to add a little more or a little less reverb until it suits your mix perfectly. Always let your mix guide you for how much effected signal.
Hot Tip: Reverb tails are often more noticeable after mastering, so make sure to mix reference your track throughout to check your tails.
Because your reverb is patched side-chain, you can have multiple different instruments sending different amount of dry signal to your reverb return.

And here it is back in the mix!
https://blog.landr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Loop_Final.wav
Wrap it up
Reverb gives a soul to your mix. It takes your sound out of the vacuum and into the real world while still finding the perfect fit in your mix.
Reverb is easily and often overdone, but with the strong understanding you now have, reverb will allow you to bring your fans inside your mixes, and tell the sound story you were dreaming about when you first sat down in the studio.
In the end, applying reverb is always all about what sound best to you! So trust your ears!

Past, Present, and What’s on the Horizon – An Interview with Tritonal
Tritonal is a production duo and DJ tandem made up of Chad Cisneros and David Reed. They are co-owners of the record label, Enhanced Music, and radio hosts on their Sirius XM Electric Area show, Tritonia.
The duo formed in 2008 and quickly rose to the label ranks, starting off on the British record label, Anjunabeats, and eventually moving to Will Holland’s Enhanced Music, which they currently co-own. Their debut album, Piercing the Quiet, crushed the Beatport charts, landing 8 singles in the top 20, and 5 #1 singles on the Trance charts. They remixed Piercing the Quiet, which lead to a top 5 placement on iTunes dance album charts.
They released their Metamorphic EP trilogy from 2013-2014, cracking the top Five on Billboard’s Airplay Dance chart with the single, Now Or Never featuring Phoebe Ryan. In 2015, Now Or Never became a sports anthem for CBS’s Thursday Night NFL broadcasts.
In 2015, they went on tour with Cash Cash on their Untouchable Tour, selling out major city venues such as New York’s Terminal 5, San Francisco’s Warfield, and L.A.’s Club Nokia. They also collaborated with The Chainsmokers on their single, Until You Were Gone, and remixed Adam Lambert’s Ghost Town, boosting their streaming success online.
Last year, they released their Painting With Dreams album with hit singles such as Blackout, Getaway, I Feel The Love, and Rewind. They’ve toured the world, playing primetime hours at major festivals such as  Electric Daisy Carnival, Escape From Wonderland, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Zoo Festival, and Creamfields Australia.
They recently released their label’s 300th track, Good Thing ft. Laurell. They’ve also released an official remix of Armin Van Buuren’s Sunny Days featuring Josh Cumbee. This fall, Tritonal is set to go on their Horizon Tour with Seven Lions and Kill The Noise.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tritonal below. Take a listen to their new remix, then listen to their new featured singles on Soundcloud and read the full interview below to get the FULL Tritonal experience. Chad and David answered questions separately.
INTERVIEW:
Where does the name Tritonal come from?
Chad: A Tritone is a musical interval, otherwise known as a chord.  It’s a diminished 5th to be exact or an augmented 4th.  It has a very dissonant sound, and the actual word Tritonal is an explosive.  It’s 80% TNT, and we thought that musical explosivity is super rad!
Where are you from and how has that shaped the musician you are today?
Chad: We’re both from Austin, TX – although Dave grew up close to Washington DC.   Im not sure geographic region influenced our love of Electronic Dance Music a lot in the early days since we were finding most of our music online!   That said, Austin is a thriving live music area, and we get to see / hear loads of different cool bands!
What instruments did you play when you were younger?
Chad: Dave played Piano, and still does. I don’t particularly play anything, although was academically trained at University for Audio Engineering.  We use our instincts when it comes to music, and always bring it back to “how does this make me feel?”
Are there an instruments that you currently wish you COULD play?
Chad:  Definitely!  I wish I had been more studious at learning piano; it’s so fundamental in writing. It’s definitely handicap at times, and I am constantly reminded of it!  That said, we work really hard at our sound design, arrangements, and go with our instinctive guts on harmony and musicality.
Tell us the story of how you started creating music on your computer?
Chad: I actually started making old school beats on gear, a Roland MC-505 Groovebox and a Korg Triton Workstation.  We saved our tracks on Floppy Disks!  lol!
Dave started noodling with FL Studio when he was about 12 years old after listening to a Tiesto album.
What was your favorite studio moment when producing your Label, Enhanced’s, 300th release, Good Thing ft. Laurell?
Chad: Hands down when we nailed the acoustic guitar counter riff with our boy, Teal. We kept sending back n’ forth notes on the rhythm and melody of it. It’s such a mainstay of the vibe!
Tell us about your new remix for Armin van Buuren.
Chad: Well obviously we respect Armin as an artist so much, but much more as a human.   He’s such a great person.  We have been close with him for years and have played a few of his massive ASOT celebrations at Ultra, EDC, and in Amsterdam.   Although our sound has changed, we really wanted to give this record a euphoric twist.
What do you like to do when you’re simply hanging out – aside from music?
Chad: My wife and I just had Twins!  Wow, they’re so adorable, but can also be so much work!   I honestly can’t take credit, as my wife is the one who deserves all of it.  She has somehow maintained an amazing home for all of us, and I’m just blessed to be a part of it.   We have 3 kids now, and thats gonna be all for us!
Dave and I work out, we go on hikes, and hang out with friends when in Austin. It’s such a great city this time of year!
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
Chad: As someone in recovery, who’s been sober for almost 12 years – this plays a big part of my extracurricular activities.   Super active in meetings, sponsoring and mentoring others, and I also co-own and operate an Inpatient / Outpatient Detox Treatment Facility called Infinite Recovery here in Austin.   We treat alcoholism and drug addiction, helping people put their lives back together.
Who are your musical influences?
Chad: Both of our favorite band is Coldplay. We also love Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm.   We listen to so much music each week preparing for our radio show Tritonia, that we stay pretty involved in whats current.  Hard not to be inspired by so much awesome music out there!
Who is one of your favorite acts right now to watch live?
Dave: Cold play is pretty exciting; however, we enjoy a lot of acts including Galantis live! We like how they innovate with their drums and percussion fused in with their DJ set!
What are some of your favorite venues to play and why?
Dave: We really love Terminal 5 in New York, Echostage in DC and venues similar! They’re so much fun to play, watching a seething, soaring mass of people get down with our music. It’s awesome.
What are some of your favorite cities to play-in and why?
Dave: We are fortunate to be able to have played in many great cities! We really enjoy playing out in Hawaii though, as it’s a complete switch from the normal vibe of travel. It’s nice to change it up and maybe bring the family sometimes.
What DAW do you use and why?
Dave: We use Logic Pro mostly! We’ve come from a variety of DAWs and feel Logic supports our needs overall rather than switching between many programs. However, we do use Ableton Live frequently!
Do you have a typical music production process? If yes, can you explain it?
Dave: Indeed we do! Between the two of us, we like to start with the peak of the record, i.e the “drop” as some would say. It helps us understand where the most intense threshold of the record is, and then we like to boil it down from there to help prepare our verse, pre, etc. It’s a great method we feel works for us.
What is your favorite MIDI Controller or instrument to produce with right now?
Dave: Honestly, we’ve still been rocking our good ole’ M-Audio AXIOMs! But we’re all about upgrading our gear as we see fit!
What is one of your favorite or go-to VST Plugin?
Dave: Whew there are many we love to pinpoint here, including spire, nexus, avenger, sylenth and we really love Omnisphere! It’s super awesome!
Do you have a key production tip for our young producers out there?
Dave: Definitely! Whenever you begin your mix, especially if it pertains to something more vocal heavy, we like to bring the entire mix down a bit by a few DBs. Then, we can properly hear our levels when mixing in drums, leads, bass, etc. You don’t need to blow your ears at high volumes to get your mix proper – take your time
What is your favorite color?
Dave: haha! Anything on Phillip’s HUE!
Do you have a favorite in-studio snack?
Dave: haha we do! Almonds or apples is the way! At times, you might catch us with some of those Peanut M&M’S though!
What is next for Tritonal?
Dave: Quite a bit actually!! Not only do we have some new music coming down the pipeline soon, but we’ve also got a dope tour lined up along with Seven Lions and Kill the Noise this fall called the Horizon Tour!

Your First 100 Million Dollars
I told him not to do it.
It’s too powerful.
They won’t believe it’s possible, and if they do, they’ll change the world.
“Let them use it to their benefit” he said.
I still don’t think you should ever release this to the general public.
Fine.

If you’ve ever wanted to become filthy stinkin’ rich, get this 3 Audio System immediately!
It won’t last long.
Here is what other people just like you who have USED Reed’s systems and CDs:
TESTIMONIAL RECEIVED IN OCTOBER 2003: “Hello, My name is Eric, and I have recently purchased several of your systems, after friend made the recommendation. I am so glad that I trusted my friends judgment, and came to you guys! I am a freshmen in college, and actually, I’d been out of school for a couple of years already, and I was worried that I’d have trouble working full time while still keeping up with my studies. Well, when I said this to my best friend, the first place she directed me to was this web site! I was skeptical at first, but I decided to try your method out anyway. I got both the "accelerated learning/instant genius” CD and another of your products that I wanted in order to make the most out of my experience, “Crystal Clear Visualization”, which actually programs you into being able to mentally recreate everything you experience (like having a photographic memory, only it effects ALL of your senses!) Anyway, to make a long story short, I followed my instructions and listened to each at least once a day. My first set of finals was this past week, and I just got my grades back, and I ACED EVERYTHING! Not just A’s, but we are talking 98’s and 100’s! - Eric R.“
—————————————————————————————————–
Reed Received this testimonial on August 8, 2002 – "I would just like to say that last year I purchased the CMCS [Complete Mind Control System] from you and it has been an excellent program. IT DOES WORK I was totally amazed. Thank you and looking forward to future purchases.”
“I don’t know if you remember me or not, but I had got a cassette from you about 2 months ago or longer. On Mind Control On Others. This tape is so awesome it worked for me 3 days after I received it.  ”“"EXCELLENT”“” Bright Blessings To You, and Thank You for doing this making these tapes. Your an awesome person. Thanks, D. D.“ —————————————————————————————————–
"Man the work you guy’s are putting out is getting better and better. I’m blown away with the latest i received.. has me buzzing all over.. it was #2 in the seduction series "automatic flirt / pheromone"  Ive studied hypnosis for about 4 years now.. "Erickson.. etc.” that latest CD is da'bomb.  This evening at the Community College i go to, i was a flirting machine.. all had a blast during our breaks!“ – regarding Reed’s Automatic Flirt CD
—————————————————————————————————–
"I have just run through your 4 CD "Mental Psychic Seduction System” and I just wanted to say that your expert use of Dual Binaural Beat Technology, much like Shamanic drumming, makes them the most powerful recorded hypnotic inductions I have ever experienced, more powerful than either ‘Major Mark’ Cunningham’s “Hypnotic Awakenings” or evan Dr Richard X’s “Personal XXXXXX Series”. What is truly fascinating to me, though, was the immediately noticeable effects of the “Mental Psychic Seduction System” on my everyday encounters with other people. As far as I could tell, I was behaving just the same as I was before the inductions and yet, everyone I met after running through the System, especially women, reacted differently to me, in a much more relaxed, open and friendly way. At first, I assumed that the “Mental Psychic Seduction System” had simply enhanced my rapport skills at an unconscious level, which would be worth the price of the System alone. In fact, I found that when I deliberately set out to assertively lead rather than pace, I found that women were surprisingly happy to go along with whatever I suggested! Beyond these amazing new skills, I have found fabulous new synchronicities occurring on an ever increasing basis, as if the Universe itself was lending a friendly hand in my wishes and desires. Worth the investment many times over!!!“ P.K. Received August 28, 2002
