Sunshine - Daisy Johnson x Romanoff!Reader

Hey! I have a Daisy Johnson x reader request. When being sent to the future, Daisy and Reader meet their grandchild. Said grandchild is brought back with deke, they have no idea that they are their grandchild until something happens to reader and they think she won't make it. Or the grandchild says something that reader always says and Daisy puts it together. (That make sense? God, I hope so. Sorry it's long.)

Daisy Johnson leans against her girlfriend, as (Y/n) Romanoff shovels pancakes into her mouth, her fiery red hair making a curtaining plate as she eats.
"You know," Phil Coulson says, eating his own food. "I think this is really the first time we've all been together in a really long time."
(Y/n) hums in agreement, swallowing another huge bite of pancake and May smiles warmly at Coulson.
(Y/n) lets out a whine as Daisy steals a bite of pancake from her, and everyone - Mack, Elena (Yo-yo), May, Coulson, Daisy, and FitzSimmons - laugh.
"Why do you always have to steal my pancakes, Sunshine?" (Y/n) asks her girlfriend, a frown on her face.
"You know you love me," Daisy replies, gazing fondly at her girlfriend. Daisy grins mischievously, taking another bite from (Y/n)'s plate.
(Y/n) blinks affectionately at Daisy. "I do," she murmurs in Daisy's ear.
"Anybody have room for some pie?" a waitress asks
(Y/n) drops her fork in excitement as the others murmur their agreement.
"Okay, so we have apple, strawberry, rhubarb, and chocolate banana cream," the waitress continues, looking amused at the excited expression on (Y/n)'s face.
There is a crackle of electricity, and the diner powers down.
There is a whir of electricity, and all the SHIELD agents sigh as lights appear outside the restaurant, resembling headlights.
"Here we go," May grumbles.
A door slams open, and some of the other customers gasp.
(Y/n) looks sadly down at her plate of pancakes before, simultaneously, the agents sit up straighter, lifting their hands into the air.
"Phillip J. Coulson," A man with a calm voice says, appearing behind said man.
"Yep, that's me," Coulson says with an eye roll, his eyes fixed on his own plate. "You got us. Nice job. And hey, congrats on the whole power-outage thing," he adds. "It was very . . . ominous."
A device powers on, and there is an actual ominous high-pitch ringing noise.
"The window closes in less than two minutes," the calm voiced man says. "Take them."
. . .
All seven agents gasp as they finally regain their breath.
Daisy sneaks her hand into (Y/n)'s, interlocking their fingers as the agents look around the dark room.
"Is everyone okay?" Coulson asks.
"Yeah, I think so," Mack replies.
Looking around the room, Simmon's eyes fall on a white rock with red lines running through it.

The Monolith melts into a white sludge, like solidified milk, and washes over the seven agents.
. . .
When (Y/n) blinks, she finds herself standing beside, not Daisy, but a woman who looked a lot like her older sister, Natasha. The same splash of freckles across her nose and cheeks, the same fiery red hair, but she had familiar chocolate brown eyes, but (Y/n) shrugs off the younger woman's - she may have been twenty or twenty one - appearance for a moment.
"You," The woman turns to address (Y/n). "We've been waiting for you to come save us."
(Y/n) tilts her head questioningly.
"You must be (Y/n)," the woman continues and (Y/n) nods.
"How do you know me?" (Y/n) asks, frowning slightly.
The young woman replies, "Virgil and I always believed the stories."
"Believed what?" (Y/n) asks. "What stories?"
"Well, this one," she answers. "T-that you would - you would come and save us."
"Save who?" (Y/n) narrows her eyes.
"Humanity," the younger redhead answers, looking grim.
. . .
Coulson, Yo-yo, Simmons, and Mack are running down a hallway, Yo-yo shooting at one of the aliens chasing after them.
There is a rumbling, and Daisy Johnson is framed in the corridor where the alien had just been - it had been exploded.

"Right?" Daisy asks shakily.
"Yes, that was right," Coulson replies, "and not the only one."
Daisy looks around at the group, noticing the two missing bodies. "Where's (Y/n)? And May?"
. . .
Coulson, Yo-yo, Simmons, and Mack stalk cautiously behind Daisy, who walks with her hand out, ready to strike.

"This has to be the coolest we've ever looked," Coulson comments.
. . .
"My friend should be here somewhere," (Y/n) comments as the two redheads walk down one of the corridors.
There is an intersection and (Y/n) crashes into a familiar, shorter figure.
"Whoa," (Y/n) says as her girlfriend scrambles to her feet, raising her hand defensively.
"Hey," Daisy says, looking relieved, wrapping (Y/n) in a tight hug.
"Hi, Sunshine," (Y/n) says so softly that no one else but Daisy could hear.
"I suppose I'll leave you here, then," the younger redhead says.
"Thanks -" (Y/n) pauses, not knowing the younger woman's name.
"Natalie," Natalie replies.
"Thank you, Natalie," (Y/n) nods.
Natalie turns and walks off, looking around cautiously, leaving (Y/n) with her friends.
"Seems like it's just a lot of work just to keep this place afloat," Coulson comments, looking at the walls.
"But it's designed for humans to survive -" Simmons says. "Atmosphere and simulated gravity - and machinery seemed to be for reclaiming water, I think."
"Yeah, it looks man-made," Coulson agrees.
"Could possibly be a colony?" Simmons wonders aloud. "Moving mankind to the stars? Maybe that's what Virgil meant by 'humanity,'" Simmons goes on.
"That's what Natalie said, too," (Y/n) says. "Said she and Virgil had been waiting for us to arrive."
"I don't know," Coulson says. "That plasma gun wasn't man-made, and I don't think they could've built this place without some outside help. It's got some serious miles on it."
"Decades it looks like," (Y/n) comments, "but that means that this program had to have been started in the eighties by Howard Stark. And that doesn't feel right. Tony would've mentioned something."
"Yo-yo found something," Mack says, appearing out of the gloom.
(Y/n), Daisy, Coulson, and Simmons follow Mack, and they find a flare still lit on the ground.

As the group walks up to the flare, it goes out, and Coulson frowns.
The group lines up in front of the door, stepping back.
(Y/n) steps forward and kicks down the door.
The agents walk into the room, catching sight of the dead men on the floor.
Daisy sighs heavily. "Nothing," she says.
"Nothing alive," Yo-yo says.
(Y/n) kneels down, studying the fresh blood on the ground.
"Hey," Coulson says, noticing the blood, as well as Melinda May's jacket.
"They didn't get to her, did they?" Yo-yo asks, looking rather concerned.
"May would've put up a fight," (Y/n) replies.
Coulson nods. "And they left the other bodies here," Coulson adds.
"'Water reclamation,'" Daisy reads off a computer screen.
"You were right, Jemma," Coulson says.
"I figured it out using magic," Simmons replies, glancing at Mack with an amused gleam in her eyes.
Mack shakes his head, not looking the least bit amused.
The console beeps and Daisy leans over the computer. "I can try and find out a layout and track May," Daisy says.
"It's in English," Simmons says. "They're tracking debris fields called 'frozen oceans'."
Daisy types on the computer, and there is a silence that is only disturbed by the clacking of a keyboard.
"They're collecting water form ice in space," Simmons says and she and Daisy look up from the computer. "This is a colony."
"Which means unless they all came through a Monolith . . . " Coulson trails off.
"Then we're close enough to Earth for people to travel here," Daisy looks back down at the computer.
"And we can get home," (Y/n) says.
"Yes, bu just as important," Simmons adds, "collecting ice means they have a spacecraft, and if they have a spacecraft, they must have a laser-based rapid-transmission system," Simmons rambles. "If we can find the ship and fly above the debris field . . ."
"We can send a message," Coulson finishes.
"We can send a message to Fitz back on Earth," Simmons goes on.
"Okay, okay, so if I can find a layout, find a ship, find May, it's a start," Daisy says. "This interface looks similar to -"  the monitor beeps, and (Y/n) leans down to read the message, her hand resting on the small of Daisy's back.
"'Human access denied'?" (Y/n) reads.

"Coulson, do you recognize this language?" Daisy asks.

"No," Coulson replies, leaning forward to look at the hand print. "I don't think humans are running this place after all."
There is a thud on the door and (Y/n) moves her hand to rest on Daisy's waist.
The door bursts open and two blue aliens step into the room, through the doorway.
The aliens attack Yo-yo, and knock her to the ground and (Y/n) advances but one of the blasters smacks her in the ribs and she hits the wall, sliding down it with a gasp of pain.
Mack tries to knock down one of the aliens with a metal pipe, but the alien doesn't gall down.
The other blue alien raises a staff and a white light floods through the room, knocking everyone in the room out.
. . .
When Daisy comes to, she blinks deliriously, but she focuses herself faster when she hears yelp of pain from (Y/n).
Sitting up, Daisy blinks again, looking at Simmons who is wrapping a cloth around (Y/n)'s ribs.
"Thankfully they're not broken," Simmons says, tightening the cloth.
"Sure feels like it," (Y/n) mutters.
"Are you okay?" Daisy asks, looking worried.
"Don't worry, Sunshine," (Y/n) replies, wincing a little, but Simmons and Coulson share a look of amusement. "I'll be alright."
Daisy softens before looking at the rest of the jail. "Mack?" she asks. "Yo-yo."
One of the Kree says, "We'll leave the transgressors on the floor chief?" He pauses. "To use as he needs."
Daisy swallows thickly, glancing at (Y/n).
"He should be interested that they've removed their Metrics," the Kree continues.
Daisy stands up and stumbles over to the doors. She slams her hand against the door. "Hey," she says, her words slurring a bit. "What are you gonna do with our friends?" she questions and (Y/n) gets to her feet, her arm resting on her bruised ribs.
(Y/n) puts her other hand on Daisy's shoulder, squeezing gently.
"Whatever we want," one of the Kree says. "Experiment. They knew the rule, and they broke it."
"They're not gonna make it easy for you," Daisy says, her eyes watering.
The two Kree walk towards the door, and (Y/n) gently pulls Daisy back.
"No," the Kree replies. "They'll beg for their lives as you humans always do. I've done twenty-two rotations and I have never observed anything else."
(Y/n) swallows thickly. She takes Daisy's hand and leads her back over to the bench. "They'll be alright, Sunshine," (Y/n) murmurs. "They're strong, the two of them." Daisy turns to study (Y/n), but even though (Y/n)'s words were meant to keep Daisy from worrying, but (Y/n)'s eyes betrayed her words.
. . .
"Okay," Coulson says. "New plan."
"The Kree have been abducting humans to this outpost for years," Simmons offers.
"Running experiments?" Daisy asks, pacing the room, and (Y/n) furrows her eyebrows.
"Well, their genetic work in creating Inhumans is well-known," Simmons says. "Maybe they're doing more of the same."
(Y/n) frowns.
"Yeah, well I'm not going to wait around to find out," Daisy says, raising her hand at the door. "So . . ."
She falters as the door opens, and three figures are framed in the door.
"May," Coulson says, taking a stop forward.
The older SHIELD agent is leaning against a familiar red haired woman, and a spiky haired young man beside them.
"Buddy!" the young man says, stepping into the room. "Just go with it," he whispers. "We've been looking everywhere for you guys," he says in a normal voice. "Man. What a mess back there, huh?" he asks. "These poor suckers," the young man turns to look at the Kree. "Virgil - you know, from R&R? He was trying to scam these guys out of some tokens. This one," he turns to May, "came running to me begging for help, the poor thing. When I get my hands on that no-good louse, he's gonna have some explaining to do."
"Where is Virgil, anyway?" Natalie asks.
"He's dead," Coulson replies.
"Good," Natalie says after a moment of silence. "Good," she turns to the Kree.
"He got what he deserved then," the young man agrees, nodding to Natalie, "didn't he, for trying to drag these poor transfers up from Processing into the Wet Works," he grabs Coulson's hand, showing it to the Kree, "just to steal their Metrics."
"So, he's just Roach food then?" Natalie asks.
"Oh, yeah," Coulson replies.
"One more vacancy, right?" the man asks.
"That's what I was gonna say," Coulson agrees.
"Guys," the young man stammers.
"What did we tell you about trusting Virgil?" Natalie asks.
"She's right, we did go over this. What did we say?" the young man adds.
"Don't trust Virgil," Simmons says.
"N-not to trust him," Daisy says simultaneously, her arms crossing.
"God, you repeated it back to us," the young man says, "and we said back - it was like a pass-and-catch thing."
"Look," Natalie turns to the Kree. "We really appreciate your help with these guys, but I can take them off your hands, even slip a few tokens your way for your trouble."
There is a moment of pause and the Kree warrior nods.
"Right, let's go," the young man says, and (Y/n) lets out a soft sigh.
Daisy keeps close to (Y/n) as the two walk down the hall after Natalie and the young, spiky-haired man at her side, May and Coulson in front of (Y/n) and Daisy.
"Don't worry, Sunshine," (Y/n) murmurs, soft enough for only Daisy to hear. "I'll be alright."
Daisy's chocolate brown eyes soften, the corner of her eyes crinkling cutely. "I love you," she says softly, and (Y/n) smiles.
"I love you too, Sunshine," (Y/n) replies softly.
The group stops as the young man and Natalie look down the hall.
"What the hell happened to Virgil?" the young man beside Natalie asks. "The Roaches get him?"
"Sorry to say," Coulson replies. "Was he a friend?" Coulson asks.
"Acquaintance," the spiky-haired man replies. "He owed me a ton of tokens for this job."
"Job?" Simmons asks.
"Deke!" Natalie says, smacking the young man.
Deke looks at Natalie before her replies, "All he said was that he wanted to hide some people. That's not unheard of. So I was hired to supply the Metrics and swap them out," Deke grabs Daisy's wrist and (Y/n) narrows her eyes, "but you guys don't even have Metrics,  which means you don't have the tokens to cover Virgil's end, so have fun."
(Y/n) wraps an arm around Daisy's waist, and Deke lets go of Daisy's wrist.
"Hey, wait, wait," Daisy says as Deke turns around. "We need your help. We need to find our friends," Daisy goes on
"Your friends?" Deke asks and Natalie glances warningly at him. "Your friends attacked a Kreeper. They're as good as gone. Those blues are bred to kill," Deke looks around, "so, so just - you make your peace with it."
(Y/n) pulls Daisy back a little as Deke looms over her.
"We'll take our chances," Coulson replies, and Deke looks over at him. "Listen, if you could just help us find them and then get to the spacecraft -"
"You mean the Trawler?" Natalie asks, looking surprised. "To do what?" she questions.
"The only pilot I knew was Virgil," Deke add, "and may he rest in peace," Deke shrugs, "apparently. So best of luck to all you guys, but mine's running out."
"Jeez Deke," Natalie smacks the man's arm and (Y/n)'s eyes flare with amusement.
"Well, Deke," Coulson says, "we just wanted pie, and now we don't know where we are or what's going on, and we finally found someone who does, so you're not walking away."
"I really wanted the pie," (Y/n) says wistfully.
Then the group stiffens as they hear Yo-yo screaming in pain.
May moves forward, twists a knob, and Deke rises of the ground, and sticks to the wall.
(Y/n) glances appreciatively at the older agent.
. . .
Daisy cracks through the pad, May, Natalie, Coulson, and (Y/n) standing behind her.
"All set," Daisy says.
"Good job," (Y/n) says, her eyes twinkling lovingly.
"Express train to the bottom of the Lighthouse, no stops," Daisy says, her hand coming up to brush against the inhibitor in her neck.
Natalie, May, and Coulson walk through the doors, and (Y/n) goes to take Daisy's hand, but Daisy steps back.
"Daisy?" (Y/n) asks, looking at her girlfriend questioningly.
"I'm not coming with you," Daisy says.
"Like hell!" (Y/n) says, frowning and glaring at her girlfriend.
"I know you're scared about going home," Coulson says, (Y/n) still fuming.
"No, I'm terrified," Daisy replies. "Look around. Billions of people gone. If there's a chance I'm the cause . . . I can't go."
"We can get through this together," May says.
(Y/n) looks away, a hurt expression crossing her face.
"You don't even have your powers anymore," May goes on.
"It's only a matter of time, and you know it. If there's an emergency or if one of you are in danger, I will need them, and we will find a way," Daisy argues. "If I go through that portal, you know it's the beginning of the end."
"We don't even know you did this," Coulson says, Daisy's eyes welling with tears.
"I was right in the epicenter," Daisy replies.
"I won't let you sacrifice yourself," Coulson says, "because you're scared of what's to come."
"What's to come is the end of everything," Daisy argues, her voice rising.
"If you can change the future here, you can change it back home," May says, gritting her teeth.
"But we know this solution works," Daisy says.
"I. Don't. Care!" (Y/n) shouts, clenched, her eyes filled with tears.
There's a pew noise, and Daisy drops to the ground, the dendrotoxin doing it's work.
Natalie gazes, wide eyed at the brunette lying unconscious on the floor.
(Y/n) tucks the ICER into the waistband of her pants, kneeling down to brush her fingers across Daisy's cheek.
"She's not going to forgive you," May says and (Y/n) glances up at her.
"I'm not leaving her here," (Y/n) picks Daisy up from the ground, and Daisy's head lolls to the side, resting against (Y/n)'s shoulder. "Let's go," (Y/n) says grimly.
. . .
May, Coulson, (Y/n) - who is still carrying Daisy - and Natalie walk down to meet Simmons, Fitz, Mack, Yo-yo, Flint, and Deke.
. . .
"What happened?" Simmons asks, her eyes falling on Daisy's unconscious figure in (Y/n)'s arms.
"She ICE'd her," May replies. "Daisy didn't want to come home."
"I wasn't going to leave her behind," (Y/n) says softly.
"Where's Yo-yo?" Mack asks. "She didn't find you?" he asks.
(Y/n) lies Daisy down on one of the couches on Kasias's lounge, Daisy's head resting in her lap.
"I'm sorry, Sunshine," (Y/n) murmurs. "I know you might not forgive me, but I couldn't leave you behind. Not like this." (Y/n) swallows thickly, blinking back her tears. (Y/n)'s fingers thread through Daisy's hair. "I love you too much to leave you here."
Coulson walks over to (Y/n), his eyes soft, and his voice is gentle, "It's time." He glances down at Daisy resting in (Y/n)'s lap. "Do you want me to take her?"
(Y/n) shakes her head. "No, I've got her."
(Y/n) shifts slightly, holding Daisy in her arms before she stands up.
Coulson stands beside (Y/n).
The rock turns to liquid and everyone - minus Daisy - looks around as they realize that they're in the same place.
(Y/n) lies Daisy down on a table, slips her hand into her pocket, and sets the box in Daisy's jacket pocket.
"Not like you'd want to," (Y/n) murmurs.
"Well that was a hell of a thing," Fitz says and (Y/n) smiles.
"Are you kidding?" Natalie says, looking around. "I'm from the future."
Coulson looks amused, then looks at Yo-yo, Mack, and Simmons. "I'm so glad you guys made it," Coulson says.
"Why are we still in the Lighthouse?" Yo-yo asks.
"Maybe Flint's Monolith didn't work," Mack offers.
Natalie looks around. "It took us to the same place, but in a different time."
Fitz nods at the redhead. "She's right."
"We're home?" Simmons asks.
"Yeah," Fitz says, and all the agents sigh with relief.
. . .
Coulson gives the agents some tasks, and (Y/n) has to remain in the same room as the unconscious Daisy.
(Y/n) opens one of the electrical panels but freezes when she hears a familiar voice.
"You ice'd me," Daisy's words are slurred. She shifts slightly, not noticing the velvet box in her pocket.
"I was . . ." (Y/n) pauses, a pained expression flashing across her face, ". . . kind of hoping you'd forget that part." (Y/n) stops herself before she says 'Sunshine.'
Daisy scoffs before she sits up, looking around at her surroundings. "Sorry to . . ." she falters, ". . . disappoint."
(Y/n) swallows thickly, focusing back on the problem in front of her she could actually fix.
"It looks the same, but we're - we're home, aren't we?" Daisy asks.
"I -" (Y/n)'s voice quavers, "- I couldn't leave you behind."
"Even with all of the risks that -" Daisy begins.
"I don't care," (Y/n) turns around, biting the inside of her cheek. "I need you here."
Daisy tilts her head, softening.
(Y/n) turns back around, fiddling with some of the wires.
There is a spark, and the lights flicker on.
(Y/n) sits herself on the floor, her back to her girlfriend.
Daisy softens even more, and gets to her feet.
(Y/n) jolts as she feels Daisy's arm wrap around her waist.
As Daisy leans into (Y/n)'s side, both women can feel the box (Y/n) had left in her pocket pressing against their sides.
Confused, Daisy reaches a hand in her pocket, pulls out the box.
"What's this?" Daisy asks. She opens the box and finds a pair of rings inside the box.

]Daisy's eyes widen and she stares at (Y/n).
"Marry me?" (Y/n) asks, meeting Daisy's chocolate brown eyes.
"Yes, is that even a question?" Daisy says, capturing (Y/n)'s lips in a kiss, pouring her love into the kiss.
Daisy's hand moves to the back of (Y/n)'s head, deepening the kiss.
Daisy pulls back from the kiss, to find a disheveled (Y/n) blinking back at her, her eyes wide.
(Y/n) shakes her head slightly, takes the sun ring from box and sliding it onto Daisy's ring finger, and Daisy does the same with the moon ring, sliding it onto (Y/n)'s finger.
(Y/n) leans into her new fiance's side, and Daisy smiles softly, her head resting against (Y/n)'s.
"I love you, Sunshine," (Y/n) murmurs.
"I love you, too," Daisy replies, her eyes gleaming happily.
. . .
"Plans are already in motion," Leopold tells Fitz, smoothing the front of his suit.
. . .
(Y/n) charges into the room and she finds a teary-eyed Daisy on her side, strapped to a table, and Fitz sitting in a chair beside her.
"Fitz? What are you doing?" (Y/n) asks.
There is the sound of a gun firing, and (Y/n) looks down, her hand coming up to her stomach.
(Y/n) slides down against the wall, her eyes glazing.
Daisy lets out a strangled, pained cry.
Simmons and Deke - who had somehow appeared a few days before - run into the room, Simmon's eyes falling on (Y/n), and her eyes widen in horror.
Daisy screams as Fitz cuts the inhibitor from her neck as Simmons and Natalie - who had just ran into the room - crouch beside (Y/n).
(Y/n) lets out a pained groan as Simmons presses against the wound.
"Don't worry, Sunshine," Natalie says, and (Y/n) is too dazed to realized what the redhead had said, but Daisy isn't, and her eyes widen. "You'll be okay.
Mack enters the room next, and he takes Fitz down into the holding area.
. . .
Daisy sits by (Y/n)'s side in the MedBay, holding (Y/n)'s hand.
Natalie enters the MedBay, and Daisy fixes her gaze on the redhead.
"Where did you hear the Sunshine thing?" Daisy asks, and the question startles Natalie a little.
"My mom would always talk about how adorable her mothers were," Natalie admits. "She said that one of her moms would call the other Sunshine. I always though it was the sweetest thing.
Daisy's eyes widen with disbelief. She studies Natalie's familiar features, the fiery red hair, the same splash of freckles across her nose, and chocolate brown eyes that matched her own.  "(Y/n) always calls me Sunshine," Daisy whispers. "You're our -"
"Grandaughter," Natalie finishes, her eyes wide.

What Stays and What Fades Away
My first chapter with the amazing @wardsarefunctioning as beta! A thousand thousand thank yous.
Contains awkward flirting and Drunk!Hawke.
Chapter 27: Juliet
It had been a week since Tanner's abrupt departure, and Juliet still felt ill when she thought about the way things had ended. She chafed to be away in Crestwood, where Hawke was doubtless already waiting for them. 
But the Inquisition had become a large organisation, and large organisations seldom moved quickly. While Hawke could travel alone and in relative anonymity, Juliet's expeditions must be scouted, provisioned and planned to the smallest detail. So instead she was stuck here in Skyhold, surrounded by a thousand small reminders of her indiscretion. 
She sat at a table in the hall poring over a pile of documents that never seemed to get smaller: requisitions, reports, requests for the Inquisition's help from all over Southern Thedas. Scout Harding was already on the way to Crestwood, but she had left Juliet a map and pages covered in her small, neat handwriting: the location of the village and fort, a brief history of the place and its flooding during the blight, even a few credible rift sightings. A potential logging site? That would help in rebuilding - 
"Inquisitor?" The messenger gave a quick salute and handed her a roll of paper. "Plans for the mage tower, milady."
The mage tower. She waited until the man was gone before letting out a groan, burying her head in her hands. 
"Pining for your soldier, Freckles?" 
Juliet spun in her chair to glare at Varric. 
"Firstly," she said, "I'm not bloody pining . Secondly, can we pretend just for a minute that I have some kind of private life?" 
The dwarf threw up his hands. "Sorry, Inquisitor," he said, hopping up into the seat next to her. "You're one of the most important figures in Thedas right now. Definitely the most important in Skyhold. Your inner circle has at least three spies, and a mind-reading spirit boy." He patted her on the back. "Keeping secrets is hard."
She stared at him a moment longer, her lips pursed. "Thirdly -" 
"I'll change your names."
"Do not -" 
"And titles."
"Put this -" 
"And location."
"In a book," she finished. "Or I'll throw you to Cassandra."
"Oh, come on Freckles! It's got everything: deception, mistaken identity, star-crossed lovers…"
"I think you're reading a little more into it than actually happened."
"Of course I am. I'm a writer."
Conceding defeat, Juliet looked back to the documents spread out in front of her; the lines on the vellum seemed to blur and dance, Harding's meticulous text reduced to gibberish. She blinked hard, twice, but her eyes refused to cooperate. 
"Why not take a break?" Varric asked and added, too casually, "Take a walk in the garden."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Why the garden, Varric?" 
"Why so suspicious, Freckles?" He grinned, hazel eyes glinting with mischief. "It's a beautiful day. The fresh air will do you good. See how your herbs are growing!" 
"I need to plan this…" she protested weakly. 
"Do you trust yourself to make good plans right now?" 
"Fine." She bundled up the documents, shoving them unceremoniously into a nugskin folder. "I'll go to the garden." In response to Varric's waggling eyebrows, she snapped, "but only because I've got no bloody place better to be."
With a smirk he propped his feet up on the table. "Enjoy the scenery, Inquisitor."
"Thin ice, Tethras," she shot back over her shoulder. 
It was close to midday, and she had to admit that the sunlight on her face and the smell of freshly-turned soil did much to clear her head. The air was fragrant with blooming herbs, all of which somehow seemed to thrive here despite the varying climates from which they had been plucked. She wished she could put down roots so easily.
Male laughter caught her attention; the voice was familiar, if not the sound. Beneath the gazebo a small table and two chairs were set up. Dorian faced the Commander over a chess board, hexagonal in the Northern style. The two men were too engrossed in the game to notice her approach and she took a moment to appreciate Cullen's relaxed posture, his easy demeanour as he rolled his eyes in response to Dorian's gentle ribbing. 
"Why do I even…" He finally saw her and broke off mid-sentence, half rising out of his chair. "Inquisitor."
Dorian flashed a charming smile in her direction before turning his attention back to Cullen. "Leaving, are you?" The mage's voice, much like his skin, was smooth as honey. "Does this mean I win?" 
It was jarring to see the Commander so comfortable in the presence of Dorian, of all people. Despite his wit and charm, or perhaps because of it, he didn't always rub people the right way. Plus he was a Tevinter, and an unapologetic mage. Was there some other reason than magic, then, for Cullen's reticence with her? 
Wary of spoiling the mood, she motioned Cullen to sit and tried to match Dorian's light tone. "Are you two playing nice?" 
"I'm always nice," Dorian lied without skipping a beat. He put his tower down with a decisive thunk and crossed his arms; impressively muscled for a mage, Juliet could never help but notice. If he'd been differently inclined, she was sure she could have put those muscles to good use. "You need to come to terms with my inevitable victory," he declared to Cullen. "You'll feel much better."
"Really?" Cullen pounced, shifting his tower from a black square to a white. "Because I just won," he said with a low chuckle, "and I feel fine."
Dorian raised one perfect eyebrow and smiled, impeccably gracious in defeat. "Don't get smug." He rose from his chair with the fluidity of a cat. "There will be no living with you."
Juliet shifted to let him pass and as she did so, his silken voice reached her in a pitch too low for Cullen to catch. 
"He's all yours, Inquisitor," he purred. "You lucky thing."
She felt her ears burn crimson, unfortunately catching Cullen's eye at the same time. Embarrassment painted a foolish smile across her face and the Commander looked at her with some confusion. 
"I should return to my duties as well…" he said, adding hesitantly, "unless you would care for a game?" 
Me? she nearly said. Did everyone else in Thedas die and nobody told me? Then she remembered the hand that had lingered on hers a moment too long after he helped her onto her horse, and a heat swept through her that had nothing at all to do with embarrassment. 
She maintained her composure enough to give him a tight smile. "Prepare the board, Commander."
Oblivious to the fire that raged inside the woman opposite him, Cullen was conversational as he laid out the carved pieces. "As a child, I played this with my sister. She would get this stuck-up grin whenever she won, which was all the time." He glanced up at her, a rarely seen flash of mischief in his eyes. "My brother and I practiced together for weeks…the look on her facethe day I finally won…" 
Juliet caught a glimpse of the boy he had been in his smirk, before a little frown marred his features. 
"Between serving the templars and the inquisition, I haven't seen them in years," he said regretfully. "I wonder if she still plays."
It was easy to forget that Templars, too, could become separated from their families. She doubted Michael had ever recounted such fond memories of her. But she felt a pang when she thought of Lavinia, and of Alec, whose child must have been born by now. 
"You have siblings?" 
He seemed surprised by her enthusiasm. "Two sisters, and a brother."
"We're the same!" Juliet paused. "I mean, my family. Two boys, and two girls." She shifted, nudging Cullen's foot beneath the table. It went unacknowledged by both of them as they adjusted their postures, but she was aware now of his proximity; she could swear she felt the heat of his knee close to her own. 
"Really?" Leaning forward on his elbows, he graced her with a warm smile. "Michael I know, but…"
Juliet couldn't suppress an eye roll at the mention of her Templar brother. "Alec is the eldest. He's…well, he's unlike Michael. And Lavinia is between Michael and I in age. Terribly frivolous and always has her foot in her mouth, but she means well." Unexpected tears sprang to her eyes as she thought of them; on waking in Haven to the news that she'd been publicly disowned, she hadn't dared to contact them. "Tell me about yours," she said with forced cheerfulness. 
"Mia," he replied with a smile, "is the one I told you of. Branson is my brother, and the youngest is Rosalie."
She wished suddenly, fiercely, that she might some day meet them. "Where are they now?"
"They moved to South Reach after the Blight…" A flash of pain reached Cullen's amber eyes. "I do not write to them as often as I should." Staring at the board, his gaze seemed to come back into focus. "Ah, it's my turn."
"Alright," she said with a grin, "let's see what you've got."
He paused, looking at her for the longest time before shaking his head. Leaning in to make his move, he said softly, "You always seem as if you're laughing at a joke nobody else understands."
"I thought everybody understood," she said lightly. "I'm the joke."
"No." His stare, however glancing, pierced her to the core. "You are far from a joke. You're the reason we are all here."
"And who am I?" she countered. "Someone else would have led. Hawke, if Cassandra could have found her."
"Hawke." His wry smile made a mockery of the idea. 
"Nobody should take themselves too seriously." Pondering a moment, she moved a pawn into the path of his mage. "The more power you have, the lessseriously you should take yourself."
Cullen's gaze raked her. Surely, she thought, he must sense the shifting restlessness his mere proximity woke in her. Finally he shook his head. "Are you sure that doesn't do a disservice to those who choose to follow you?" 
"The opposite." She countered his move. "Power without humility lead to tyranny."
For a moment he looked startled. Then he laughed, shaking his head. "Of all people, I should know that." 
"So you and Dorian…" she began tentatively. 
"Dorian and I…?" Cullen's eyebrows shot up. "I assure you, there's nothing of that sort -" 
"Oh no, I just meant…you seemed to be getting along so well! It's not a friendship I would have expected."
"I ran into him in the library. Varric asked me to find a book for him." At her quizzical look, he chuckled. "I think he's trying to avoid Cassandra."
"I can't say I've ever seen Cassandra in the library."
"No point in taking chances, were his words. Anyway, Dorian…" Considering his next move, he twirled a stone piece in his fingers. Such long, clever fingers…he caught her eyes suddenly and she shut her mouth with a painfully audible snap . "He just seems lost, you know. He's a long way from home."
"Don't let him think you pity him," Juliet advised. "He won't thank you for it."
"It's not pity," he said, surprised. "Sympathy, yes, but I do enjoy his company." He caught her look of puzzlement. "Is that so unusual?" 
"Only," she floundered, searching about for the right words, "because of, you know, what he is."
"What he is?" Cullen's voice held faint disapproval. "I'm not sure I take your meaning."
Oh, Maker, now she'd offended him. "Only that I thought it might make you feel uncomfortable. Threatened, even."
"Threatened?" Cullen sat back in his chair, arms folded as he studied her face. "Why should I feel threatened?" 
Could we build a lesser amulet? she thought desperately.One that would take me back to before this line of conversation began. "You wouldn't be the only one. I know several people are concerned with his presence…" Biting her lip, she trailed off as Cullen drummed his fingers on the chair arm with evident annoyance. 
"I know that some people harbour foolish prejudices," he began, "but I certainly didn't think you would be amongst them, Inquisitor."
"Me?" she answered indignantly. "Why in Thedas would I be prejudiced against Dorian? I'm the same as he is!" 
Cullen gaped. "You are?" 
She couldn't understand his reaction; this was by no means new information for the Commander. "Well, yes. I mean I'm not from Tevinter, but essentially…"
They realised their mistake at the same time. Juliet groaned, covering her face; Cullen rubbed the back of his neck as he grinned sheepishly. "You meant…"
"Yes. And you thought…"
"I did." His grin slipped. "But you're wrong to think Dorian's magic should make me uncomfortable. I mean, you're a mage and I'm not uncomfortable with you."
"You're not?" 
She must have sounded a touch too incredulous, because Cullen looked at her sharply. Then he smiled, staring down at his hands. "I don't know if you've noticed, Inquisitor, but I can be somewhat…awkward…at times."
"No," she answered, laughing. "Really? It had completely escaped my notice."
"If I seem that way around you, please know that it's not because of the fact that you're a mage. It's because, well…"
Juliet's mouth went dry. "Yes?" 
"It's just the way I am," he finished quickly. 
Hope gave way to sharp disappointment. Surprised by the intensity of her reaction, she hid her feelings in contemplating the next move. "Your turn," she said finally. His pawn joined the small crowd of pieces on the tabletop. 
He studied the board, frowning. "You're no stranger to this game."
"My mentor in the Circle, Lydia," she swallowed hard at the memory, "didn't believe in idle hands. Or minds. When the study of magic didn't take up our time she had us learn history, geography, strategy, mathematics…" An opening became apparent and she swiftly dispatched one of his mages. "Chess."
At the mention of her Circle, Cullen's expression became shuttered. "It seems that was time well spent," he said stiffly. "I wish…" He shook his head, apparently clearing some stray thought. "Your move, Inquisitor."
Always Inquisitor. What was it about him - or about her - that drove her to keep needling him? He was too proper, too authoritative. It made her keep trying to crack open that facade of stiff professionalism, even if she felt like a bird hopelessly battering its wings against a window pane. It made her blurt out, even as her rational mind told her it was a terrible idea, "So…tell me about you and Hawke."
Cullen's smile vanished. "How do you…? Never mind," he said, somewhat curtly. "I would rather not." With exaggerated carefulness he finished his move, putting his knight down with the barest tap of stone on stone. Without meeting her eyes, he elaborated, "It was a mistake."
"Oh." A mistake. Her chest suddenly tight, she attempted what she hoped was a smile. "You have regrets?" 
Cullen's answering smile was more of a grimace. "I regret the entire thing. Now, really…I'd prefer if we moved on."
"I'm sorry," she said with forced cheerfulness. "It seems my sister's not the only one capable of putting her foot in it." She saw the opportunity to take his queen, and considered letting it pass; then, with an apologetic smile and a half-shrug, she toppled the piece with her mage. 
"There," Cullen said. "That's Mia's look."
Juliet laughed. "I wasn't aiming for stuck-up, but I suppose I've earned the right to gloat a little."
"It's not over yet," he countered. Thoughtful, he glanced at her through sandy eyelashes. "This may be the longest we've gone without discussing the Inquisition - or related matters. To be honest, I appreciate the distraction."
"I aim to please." Impulsively, she added, "We should spend more time together."
Another misstep in a conversation littered with them. Wasn't Cullen supposed to be the awkward one? But there was no awkwardness in his heavy-lidded gaze. "I would… like that," he said, and his low voice sent a pleasant shiver through her body. She could only smile back inanely, until he shook himself and turned his attention back to the board. 
"We should…finish our game," he stammered. "Right. My turn?" 
They sat in companionable silence. Stone tapped against stone, and the low hum of insects and murmured conversations played around them. Finally Cullen played the only move that was open to him, and it was checkmate. He smiled wryly. 
"I believe this one is yours. Well played." He leaned back, rolling his shoulders in a way that distracted Juliet entirely from her victory. "We shall have to try again some time." Standing, he offered her a small bow. "Inquisitor."
"Juliet," she said. "Please."
"Juliet." It was only her imagination, adding that low, husky timbre to his voice, the flash in his molten gold eyes. It was just her name; there was no reason for it to feel like a caress. 
And yet long after he had taken his leave she sat, fingers playing around her lips as if the memory of a kiss lingered there. 
"Still here?" Dorian startled her from her reverie. He ensconced himself in the chair opposite, fingers steepled and a knowing gleam in his eye. "Do I sense a romance blooming? I would so love to attend a provincial wedding."
"Did you and Varric orchestrate this?" she demanded. 
"Varric?" he said, affronted. "Perish the thought, dear cousin. Our Commander wandered into my library and I took pity on him. He seemed so…" The mage twirled his hand theatricality. "Lost."
"How terribly kind of you to keep him entertained."
"Obviously, darling Juliet, I resent the implication to my very core." Dorian plucked an imaginary piece of lint from his trouser leg, examining it between thumb and forefinger. "But I did rather enjoy the game…and the view."
"You don't find our little garden too provincial?"
"Now, now," he chastised her. "We both know I wasn't talking about the garden. My question remains: are you two delightful creatures going to give all of us, your proud and loving family, the news we wait so impatiently to hear? Or must Varric's prize pool grow ever larger?" 
"Bloody Varric," she muttered. 
"Well?" Dorian crossed an elegant ankle over his leg. 
"I'm going to have to disappoint you."
"Oh." Dorian did, indeed, sound disappointed. "Tell cousin Dorian absolutely everything."
Juliet sighed. I regret the entire thing. Somewhere in the Hinterlands, Tanner would be thinking the same about her. "There's really nothing to tell." She turned her hand palm up; the Anchor pulsed faintly green. "I just don't want to be anyone else's mistake."

Um, Yeah.
Well it's damn near March already. What the hell? Where does the time go?
The whole world is in a huff about COVID-19, and here in Japan too, obviously, but people are in full-on freakout mode. First thing they did was go on a panic-buying-spree of masks, like surgical masks, you know, the ones everyone here wears when it's either flu or hay fever season. So, there's a shortage of masks now. "ONE BOX PER CUSTOMER!!" signs at the shops with any remaining stock. For me, the funniest thing is that masks do not prevent the wearer from catching a virus. The seal around the face is not perfect, so guess what, shit don't work. Unless you strap on a military grade chemical warfare motherfucker of a mask, like with the filter cans and shit? Nope. I mean, even the homepage of the WHO where you can find a coronavirus FAQ says so ("BUT THE WHO IS CONTROLLED BY THE UN AND THEY'RE SECRETLY OUT TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD SO YOU CAN'T TRUST THAT!!!!" yeah yeah yeah. Shame. On. You). But nahhhh who cares about actually using your head and thinking about how viruses spread. See, the masks work (sorta) when worn by people already infected, as they trap most of the fun stuff ejected by a sneeze or a cough. Not all of it. We can still hope for some fun to be shared among the general populace can we not? Ahhh but it's easier to be a total idiot and follow the herd mentality and panic-buy useless shit. Then there was the fiasco with the cruise ship and not letting passengers disembark, and then it turns out a number were let off without having to go through screening, but the Chinese are still being confined to quarters blah blah blah. Jeeezus Fucking Christ EVERYTHING is made in China anyway, from rubber dog shit to the (probably) fake ICs in your military hardware to your beloved smartphones and related devices, shit, even the incessant machine-diarrhea geyser of clone synths too, so what the hell is the big deal about a potentially pandemic-level megavirus every few years? Chinavirus. Next in the ongoing series. Personally, I don't really care where the viruses originate, and to tell the truth, I get a warm feeling inside when people lose their shit over stuff like this, and even warmer when the death toll rises and rises. Can't think of a better species to get a good culling than the old homo sapiens. Heh. Mister Misanthrope at your service! But anyway.....

Found this ancient beast sitting forgotten and forlorn in a closet at work. It's a Luxman 38FD "High Fidelity Stereo Integrated Amplifier" made around 1970 (like me!). It is in near fucking mint condition. HEAVY. AS. FUCK. And the winningest part of the whole thing besides it being destined for the Big Garbage pile and as a result free for the taking? IT WORKS. Oh, and even better...

IT'S A VACUUM TUBE AMP!!! Those are the main tubes, 50CA10, pretty much but not totally unobtanium. Yeah, they fucking glow a warm orangey red, and after a bit you can see blue vapor inside. Well, if you turn off all the lights and take the top cover off. It runs hot as fuck too. I was just shocked the thing worked. It's sitting comfortably atop the desk in the lair, where you'd normally park a printer, with a pair of Yamaha NS-100X speakers on risers above it. Sounds great. There's considerably more noise (hiss?) than a modern amp, but with the volume knob raised to about 10 o'clock, it's already loud enough that the hiss isn't even a consideration anymore, and any louder would be asking for trouble with the neighbors. I can't believe it because the amp is supposed to be a mere 30 watts per channel. I guess 30 watts from vacuum tubes is a hell of a lot different from even triple that from a modern amp. LOUD!!! So yay me.

I was watching this one on the auction for about a month and a half. The opening bid started out at around $1700 but nobody bid, and the auction ended, and one option here on the yahoo auction is for an automatic re-listing with the opening bid discounted by a certain percent. I watched for a while, then just when I'd forgotten about it, it came up in the look-at-me feed and the price was down to a grand so I bid on it and won. I had one of these before and regretted selling it, thus the TI Polar in my arsenal now, but the 61-key TI has THE BEST keys ever. Feels so good to play. Fatar! I thought yeah ok I'll just say see ya to the Polar and call it even. But... Hmm... Wait... One thing led to another and in the end I decided to keep both the viruses and... and...... and...... sell the ION. Say WHAT?!?! After all the work and repairs and maintenance and customizing LEDs and and and and.... Yeah. It's a hell of a synth, no doubt about it, but I think anything with the Alesis logo on it has a very definite shelf-life. The pots are gonna go, a few are acting up already, and those are unobtanium unless you wanna shell out the dosh and buy from syntaur. You can't get NOS pots either. So... After some serious deep-thinking and careful consideration and deliberation I had to say to myself, "self, it's a wonderful machine capable of some great sounds, but it's only 8-voice polyphonic, there are barely any effects to mention, ok sure the mod matrix and plethora of filter models and waveshaping are fantastic, but you know how ridiculously MORE powerful the Virus TI is almost every respect!" And I admitted defeat. To myself. Weird, I know. But there you go. I don't think I know anyone with two Virus TI (or TI2) synths in their collection. Maybe Anthony Rother. I know he has two IONs. 
Ahhhh but this 61-key virus wasn't without problems. Uh, well, OK one BIG problem. The power supply shat itself when I turned it on for the first time. The LCD sorta flashed, there was a brief sign of life with some of the LEDs, but then blip! Nothing. Aaaaargh! Unseat the power cable, reseat it, try again. Nothing, just a high-pitched whine that was getting louder. I put my head up against the front panel, listening for where the whine was coming from, and figured out it was the far right side. That's where the PSU is. Then suddenly the sound changed to a higher pitch that swept downwards over the course of a few seconds, all the while sputtering like it had a downward sawtooth filter on it, then POP! No more sound. When I opened the case up, I immediately remembered that for whatever reason, Access decided to go with a PSU like you'd use with a laptop computer, the big brick-like deals, and that they'd carefully bracketed the brick in so that the eyeglass-socket for the plug lined up with the hole in the rear panel. OK so all I needed to do was find a same-rating PSU and then go about modding the bracket so cosmetically it would look from-the-factory. Incidentally, I contacted Access and asked about parts, but the rep said they don't have any more PSUs for the TI series, only ones for the TI2 series, and that they aren't the same size so when they do the repair, they put a DC jack on the rear panel and the PSU gets left out—goes from internal to external if you catch my drift. Well, no thank you, I do not care for that approach, no sir, I didn't wanna go that route at all. So, thanks to having access to a drill press and diamond-saw dremel tools at work, I made the necessary mods to the bracket, padded it a bit so it would securely hold the new PSU in place, and in the end you can't tell it isn't a factory PSU (from the outside). Yay me, part two.

Not bad, right? You'd never know. But I've told you, so now you know. Oh and the PSU was $22 from a local parts chain (Marutsu). I think Access wants about $50 but I think that includes free shipping anywhere in the world. I'm just glad it's working fine now.
Other goings on... I've sold the Timeline and Space pedals, and used part of the proceeds to pick up a Sony DPS-D7 delay and a DPS-R7 reverb to use in their place. But the D7 had a wonky input knob that actually broke off in my fucking hand the second time I went to use it. That pot is super unobtanium, so I thought I'd just epoxy the broke-off-bit and not worry about separately controlling the input levels for the L and R channels (does anyone even DO that?)... Here's the pot.

Even after it was epoxied back together, it was fucking bent as fuck. Red line shows the angle, blue arrow shows where the epoxy ghetto fix went down. I saw another D7 listed as-is for $10 and nobody bid so I won it, and I had intended to just cannibalize the pot, but it turns out that it has a newer OS and it works fucking fine, so that was kind of a head-scratcher. People are weird. This delay is stupid deep. There's a multi-tap algorithm that has like 40 separately programmable taps, each with its own level, pan, feedback, and all that. The reverb (R7) is just as insane with parameters... Dudes, and dudettes, seriously, you need some deep-sea rated scuba gear to really get to grips with these Sony DPS motherfuckers. DEEEEEEEEEEEP AS FUCK. I've owned these before too. Had the F7 Filter too. That thing had a 40-band vocoder and a multi-part digital drum synth in it!? Man I think the engineers at Sony had access to some GOOD drugs back when they were working on this line of effects processors. Seriously. I mean, I love programming, but even I was intimidated by the sheer amount of programmability in these things. The ones I had before were a bit noisy, but these aren't at all. Strange. Fun shit though. Oh and there's this:

Ah fuck, looks a bit out of focus. That right there is a TOA DE-1000 delay. Rare as shit, and this one is in NEW condition. Insane! I've had this one on my radar for a while. Why? Because it's fucking WEIRD!!!! So the max delay time is 255ms or something really not that long at all, but you've got three to control: Left, Center and Right. Individual times (LEDs) and levels (white sliders), plus global wet/dry and feedback, AND modulation time and depth sliders. SLIDERS!!?? Ok it only has four memory slots, and no MIDI, but you can get up to some good mischief with this thing. Last two goodies to blab about:

Top: SONICWARE ELZ_1. What a weirdo synth. I heard that it's a raspberry pi under the hood but really? Who cares. It can do some off the wall shit. A handful of wacky synth engines, topped off by four effects processors at the end. And it has a speaker. My only complaint is no DIN MIDI, just USB and you have to buy a class compliant dealie. I suppose I should do so before I forget. Sounds pretty damn good though, and it does things that I've not heard other synths do. Built well. Fun to play and fun to program. Runs on batteries. Worth looking into. I was so impressed with this that I backed their next project (a groove box type thing it seems). Bottom: KORG AM8000R. This fucker does some WEIRD SHIT! I had one before (and its delay counterpart, the DL8000R) and for whatever reason didn't hold on to them. I think I was looking for more bread and butter, set it and forget it type effects. This was really cheap and it's in great shape. I don't think so many people know about these. Relatively easy to program, and you can get some really good, usable stuff as well as some super far out WTF stuff. The WARP! knob is good fun too.

Have a listen. It's stuff I recorded from about November through December last year, maybe even the first week of January this year. Live jam format, no master sequencer, wish I was an octopus because two arms and ten fingers just wasn't enough type stuff. All hardware. Fun!
