Consolidated B-24J Liberator by Willard Womack Via Flickr: “The Dragon And His Tail” This is the B-24J flown by the Collings Foundation, in one of its earlier paint scheme. The original, “The Dragon And His Tail”, also a B24J, flew in the 64th Bomb Squadron of the 43rd Bomb Group in the 15th Air Force. During 1943, it operated from Australia, and New Guinea. After the war, it returned home, ending up at Kingman Airfield Az. awaiting salvage. The workers saved it to the very last, hoping that someone would purchases it, in order to save the most unique paint scheme of the war. However, with no purchaser it was melted into an aluminum ingot, along with thousands of others. The B-24 used two different types of nose gun turrets. Those B-24s’ built at the Consolidated Aircraft plant in Fort Worth Texas mounted the nose turret designed and built by Emerson Electric. This is the Emerson turret, which is shaped slightly different, and with more glass, than the Consolidated. All B-24s had the Consolidated turret on the tail, with those built by Ford also having it on the nose. The most noticeable difference is the Consolidated turret has a slanted window. The Emmerson dos not.
