rating lego space shuttles: 2019-2022

#31091 Shuttle Transporter (2019)

despite regaining the landing gear this actually feels like a further step down from #31066. it’s unfair to hold a little shuttle like this to the same standard as a minifig shuttle, but on the other hand, the fact that it’s not minifig-scaled but still bigger than the ideas mini-shuttles is itself a mark against it. competent but not much to say past that. 🚀🚀1/2

#60224 Satellite Service Mission (2019)

city 2019 brought in another wave of space sets, this time a near-future theme focused on manned mars missions, and this brought with it future shuttles galore. we begin with this spiritual successor to #60078 utility shuttle, which looked oddly squished. this one solves that problem by being even more squished to the point that it looks intentional, forgoing a cargo bay entirely in favor of stashing the satellite in the back, between the (adjustable) engines. it looks cool, though it also feels like it wants to be a starfighter when it grows up. 🚀🚀🚀

#60226 Mars Research Shuttle (2019)

this is the “proper” shuttle for the mars exploration subtheme, and subjectively speaking, my favorite lego future shuttle. being objective, though, I have to dock some points for a weird quirk it has: there’s seating for two astronauts, but one of the seats is in the cargo bay. what the heck? still, props for a good arrangement of space shuttley bits. interestingly, instead of a satellite, this shuttle carries a little rocket-propelled box, presumably for recovering samples taken by the rover. 🚀🚀🚀🚀

also you can tell exactly when this set was designed because it includes a little not!ingenuity helicopter.

#60227 Lunar Space Station (2019)

so this set is totally inspired by the lunar gateway station that’s supposed to be part of the artemis program and to later serve as sort of an intermediate stop for mars missions, though it’s not really based on it as closely as the 2022 set with the same name (#60349). the key element here though is the little craft, which is a future shuttle in the same vein as #60224, and is... clearly worse, sorry. 🚀🚀

so, lego overwatch was a thing that happened. yeah. I don’t overwatch, but from what I’m told, these two sets are based on a map where one team’s job is to reunite the baby space shuttle with its mother and the other team is trying to stop them. I don’t know why you would try to stop that. it’s mean. anyway we have a matching pair of future shuttles here and I'm rating them together even though they’re separate sets because I don’t want to separate them and also because I don’t know what I’ll say if I have to talk about overwatch twice. the mother can apparently separate into two smaller shuttles and deploy guns or something, I don’t know. 🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇 <- the cavalry is here. and that’s the last remaining thing I know about overwatch.

friendship ended with #7470. now #10283 is my new best friend.

seriously, this comes very close to being a perfect lego space shuttle. it’s got elevons you can control by sneakily rotating one of the engines. the rudder splits for airbraking. the landing gear automatically deploys but specifically doesn’t automatically retract because the real orbiter can’t actually do that. it has a two-story crew cabin. it has accurate doodads inside the cargo bay. of course there’s an updated hubble space telescope that’s also a million times nicer.

#31117 Space Shuttle Adventure (2021)

so aside from #10238 there had recently been a big fancy apollo 11 eagle lander and a big fancy saturn v rocket, and then suddenly lego released this 3-in-1 that can be built as a space shuttle, a rocket, or a lem. there’s no way this wasn’t intentionally the Recent Space Hits set. anyway this one’s a big improvement over #3100. it finally returns the elevons to minifig-scale shuttles, and not only does it have landing gear, but it’s retractable! on a minifig-scale shuttle! the oms pods are also unusually detailed for this size. the only real compromise for the sake of alt-models is the design of the canadarm, which lego space shuttles tend to take a lot of liberties with anyway. very good space shuttle, worthy successor to the best of city. 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀 incidentally this is also part of a subtle “stealth theme” in the creator 3-in-1 range that also includes a rover (#31107), a weird vtol (#31111), and a mech (#31115).

the first space shuttle in the lego friends theme isn’t the top of the minifig-scale class (landing gear and elevons both should have been possible here imo), but it’s definitely a good one, and thanks to the way minidolls are designed, it’s also one of like two lego space shuttles ever that can seat two astronauts side by side. the satellite is unusually tiny for this scale, but in a way that looks intentional, like it’s meant to be a cubesat or something. takes clear inspiration from both city shuttles and #31117, and a worthy successor. and I love the pink. 🚀🚀🚀🚀

#9334 Space & Airport Set (2010)

this is another one of those huge education sets that have a million things in them and the one I’m looking for is a little background smudge. it looks vaguely like a space shuttle I guess.

#10213 Shuttle Adventure (2010)/#10231 Shuttle Expedition (2011)

okay so here’s what happened. during all that business with the near-future space stuff, the switch from town to city happened, and now city vehicles get to be bigger. thus we get this bigger, better minifig-scale space shuttle which clearly takes influence from #7470. the boosters are back and the fuel tank is finally properly colored, and not only is the shuttle better shaped than we’ve seen from city before, it’s a two-seater! marginally closer to reality! hooray!

and apparently it fell apart if you looked at it funny.

thus, in 2011, lego sold what appeared to be literally the exact same set again, but with some modifications to make it more stable (though it’s apparently still not super playable) and also apparently to make the landing gear stick out more. and they changed the astronauts' faces for some reason. look I don’t know. the whole situation is weird. it’s a very nice shuttle in any event. 🚀🚀🚀🚀 good for you, lego, fixing your mistakes.

#3367 Space Shuttle (2011)

lego was committed now, apparently, so also in 2011 we got a new space shuttle. while #10213/#10231 was shooting for realism, this one is more like the early-to-mid-nineties town space shuttles but bigger, which is pretty much exactly what we’ve come to expect from city. lego city finally has access to click-hinge technology, which we see on the cargo bay doors and which also finally supplies this shuttle with elevons, though in the latter case it’s by the method of having hinges blatantly stuck to the top of the wings, looking like an emergency improvisation a la flight of the phoenix. the specially molded aircraft cockpit looks nice, and while it has limited potential for use in non-space-shuttle constructions, we are not here to care about things that aren’t space shuttles. overall: solid. 🚀🚀🚀🚀

#60078 Utility Shuttle (2015)

this is sort of an odd duck. 2015 was one of those years where lego did a full-on city space exploration subtheme, like in 1995, 1999 (bleh), and 2011, but this time they apparently decided they wanted a smaller pricepoint space shuttle. enter the utility shuttle, a weird made-up thing that’s basically a baby space shuttle. it’s really weird because overall this was one of the “realistic” space themes but this is totally a future shuttle complete with the angled fins. and no oms. it’s still fairly solid as future shuttles go but its placement in the range makes me scratch my head. 🚀🚀🚀 also aren’t all space shuttles utility shuttles?

#60080 Spaceport (2015)

here we can see where at least part of the impetus to make the utility shuttle came from: lego presumably wanted to recoup some of the cost of making the new cockpit piece for their new full-sized shuttle. while not as fancy as #10213/#10231, you can see their influence as well as that of #3367, and it comes across as essentially a combined remake taking the best aspects of both. very nice boosters and fuel tank, elevons with no need for the hinges to be stapled on, even properly angled engines. also this is the first proper space shuttle to take advantage of a new curved panel for the cargo bay doors (which was also on the utility shuttle). this is a good space shuttle. 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀

and that’s actually currently the most recent proper space shuttle in lego city! and possibly the last one ever, now that real life space programs have newer and shinier spaceships to recreate. don’t fret, though, there are a couple more future shuttles on the way, and more real space shuttles through other channels.

#21312 Women of NASA (2017)/#21321 International Space Station (2020)

lego ideas is truly the gift that keeps on giving. a popular theme for proposals has been “let’s promote women in stem fields” and 20tauri’s project “women of nasa” was definitely one of the most successful, a set depicting, well, women who’ve been a big deal at nasa. two of them were space shuttle astronauts sally ride and mae jemison, so we got this very cute little space shuttle with all the fixings. this inspired user xcld to propose a new model of the international space station for the shuttle to service, which became another successful project. this second tiny shuttle is actually slightly tweaked from the first one, but as it’s substantially the same design, I decided to rate them together. and highly. 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀

the women of nasa set also happens to give us our second lego hubble space telescope.

#31066 Space Shuttle Explorer (2017)

what did I tell you? just because lego city is done with space shuttles doesn’t mean lego isn’t going to keep making them. that said, it’s hard not to see this one as a step down from the one in #60080. it’s not bad, but it loses the elevons, the second seat, and the landing gear. this is all in service of making it rebuild into two other completely different things, of course, but we’re just here for space shuttles. 🚀🚀🚀1/2
