Let's Talk About: Mentopolis and The Scattered Mind
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, reading the takes Tumblr peeps have on what's going on in Mentopolis is kind of raising my expectations on how the show is going to unfold. That said, nothing could have prepared me for how this episode ended. Nothing.
And speaking of not being prepared… Wilton?! Wilton with the character art looking like a wrinkly pair of--
How I wish we could get a bonus episodes of Dimension 20 seasons of just the players reacting to the character artwork. Because much like I would have loved to see how Bob the Drag Queen and Jujubee would react to Nyruth, I would really really like to see Freddie Wong and Mike Trapp react to Wilton as well.
Now onto the episode content itself;
Hank Green's "I think it's time to unlearn that?" Chef's kiss. The whole thing with The Fix being built to be menacing and scary but Hank's innate kindness and softness still shining through? I don't remember if it was Brennan Lee Mulligan or Brian Murphy or Aabria Iyengar who said something about how your tabletop roleplaying character is you but through a stained-glass. I feel like that really applies to Hank and The Fix.
Alex Song-Xia, once again, has impeccable one-liners in this episode. Trapp doubling down on his character's… tenacity? Amazing. Danielle Radford is taking no prisoners in her game-play, and I love all of her facial reactions. All of them. Freddie Wong's choices in game continues to astound me, and you never know where he's going to zag next.
But my second chef's kiss for this episode goes to Siobhan Thompson's "Fucks Expletive." That was some very quick thinking that really fleshed out a part of this world, and one character's background, with just two words. And that's not mentioning all of the in-character choices Siobhan makes that truly, truly elevates this episode as one of the funniest and most enjoyable couple hours of content on the internet.
I can't wait to see what happens next. Because, really, after that ender of a scene, I need to know how it all plays out.

I'm halfway through the premiere of mentopolis and i'm obsessed with the worlbuilding and the philosophical implications of it.
"The Big Guy" aka Elias Hodge is a god for the characters, but also their CEO, and their client. The police and institutions ? That's negative self-talk and low self esteem. Journalists and reporters ? They signal uncomfortable sensory things, but not the uncomfortable mental things. Detectives like Hunch Curio are interested in tropes, patterns, and not in leads. Hyperfixation / the Fix's job is to eliminate distractions violentely, whether it is basic needs or intrusive thoughts.
It's not entirely realistic and it's far from perfect (Donny Urges as an intrusive thoughts who judt wants cake is... far from perfect) but the entire concept is so fascinating. I need so much more rn
Edit : nearly finished the episode and loooove the idea of kids as hobbies and interestd that could blossom, but are repressed in the refuge of Madam Loathing because they are not important . Also the mafia being related to greed and avarice is quite cool.
If I had to guess how this season will go I think the main villain will be a representation of work anxiety or burnout, who killed the employee ? Idk

I am finally getting around to watching Mentopolis (I will watch the other seasons of D20 later, probably once I finish this one) and I just want to say, I love the dynamic between The Fix and Conrad as the world's most intimidating man and the world's saddest boy.

"Madame Loathing-- Madame Self-Loathing. I know the more focus we give you the stronger you get, so I'll make this short. You are seen. And I accept you. I can't focus on you right now, but I do need your help. You serve a purpose; you've protected a lot of children... even though you didn't like them. So, if you can find it within you, can you please help us with the Big Guy right now?"
Madame Loathing looks at you [...] You watch Self-Loathing diminish and become that old woman again, a little bit less monstrous, and she says:
"You think... You think Elias Hodge needs me?"
"I think he needs every part of himself, and you're a part of him. And so am I. I'm glad to know you."
-Alex Song-Xia knocking it out of the park as Conrad Schintz (Conscience) in Mentopolis.

Let's Talk About: Mentopolis and Case Closed
Tumblr media
This is arguably the best Dimension 20 finale of 2023… so far. Sure, Dungeons and Drag Queens gave us one heck of an emotional ending that was elevated by Jujubee's personal stakes in the story. The Ravening War was a fun romp through time that delivered cinematic-quality twists, plot developments, and tension-filled moments in the finale. And Neverafter's finale was more scary serious and needed a lot of processing.
Mentopolis though… With the mix of catharsis and a table of players that really focused their talents on the fun of role-playing… This finale was just so enjoyable. It gave me everything I didn't even know I wanted.
And the whole episode was truly bonkers. The fight, the player decisions… Danielle/Anastasia Tension glugging down some room-temperature vodka after a wild chase, Hank/The Fix setting the mood with some genre-appropriate steam, and Freddie/Dan Fucks making the ultimate in-character choice of distracting the enemy with his diamond-hard balls.
Trapp rolled the most cursed Nat 1 from Dimension 20 history--and still survived! Siobhan found the best coda for the whole adventure.
And Alex… Alex has done something no other Dimension 20 player has ever done for me: they made me cry for four episodes straight. Maybe five. I'll have to go back to what I said in previous talk-abouts. But Alex was very masterful with how they delivered their emotional gut-punches. As well as the physical ones Conrad delivered.
Hank didn't want to get left behind either. His final scene with the reunion? Magnificent. And the "did you know" speech in the fight that wasn't meant to be menacing but still managed to scare the shit out of everyone (including myself who is watching months and months after they finished wrapping)? Inspiring.
I need to see Alex, Hank, and Freddie in future Dimension 20 seasons. I would love for them to be together, but I would love it even more if we see them interact with other Dimension 20 cast members and/or newcomers. I want Hank to come back in a season with Murph and Emily. I want Alex on a season with Aabria as the game master, and maybe with Oscar Montoya as a fellow player. And Freddie… Freddie, I feel, could fit in with any table composition. I want to see his chaos with Zac and Lou's though. Or Zac and Ally's.
And I want Danielle partnering with Siobhan again. Maybe in another Good Society-run season by Aabria. Maybe in a different system run by Jasmine Bhullar. I feel like we only got the tip of the possible shenanigans we could've gotten from the two… Thinking about it now, what if Murph guest DMs a side quest season with Danielle, Siobhan, and Emily?! The possible combinations are endless.
While I fantasize about possible casts for future seasons of Dimension 20, I leave you with a few gems I will treasure from the finale of Mentopolis:
"The greatest pleasure is punching your boss."
"Mr. Fix? Duck!"
And "57. My favorite number."
See y'all next time. In the stars. In the soup. In the dome.
