I'm gonna go on a dumb rant but this means a lot to me because it just hurts so much thinking about it. I feel stupid and silly and immature getting this worked up over it but also entirely justified and valid in my feelings and I need help (more under the readmore)

so I've been reading the manga for Bocchi the Rock after having finished the anime (no spoilers in this rant, don't worry) and even before having started reading it, I had come across all the major 'gay Bocchi' meme panels and i was definitely keeping an eye out for them as i was reading

(also i was reading it at https://bocchitherockmanga.com/ which for reasons i will get into I do NOT recommend AT ALL. all the issues i'm about to talk about aren't there in the mangadex version)

i've gotten through most of the series with no issues whatsoever, until I got to chapter 58. These latest chapters were being scanned by someone new to scanlations as a whole, and in particular bocchi stuff (I won't name names because that's not what this post is about, you can find who to blame just by reading it yourself from anywhere that isn't mangadex)

I was very keenly on the look-out for this panel, because for very obvious reasons it's become a very popular bocchi meme:

...but reading the version i was reading, not only were there very blatant grammar and spelling issues, but when i finally got to the panel-

what the fuck. what the fuck is this bullshit

"I've it's been popular nowadays..." doesn't make any fucking sense and had i not read the other version first i might not have understood what it was trying to say, and all of the text is so horrendously scaled and placed so awfully

but the real issue is in that "fine print":

"I already know the scope of the test, and it seems I'm going to be that one big-breasted popular girl on the exam!"

what.

the.

fuck.

this makes ZERO FUCKING SENSE given the actual illustration, i know bocchi has big boobs in the manga but WHO'S THAT GIRL WITH THE BIG BOOBS, HUH??? WHAT'S HER SIGNIFICANCE???

it doesn't take an expert to realise that what bocchi's saying here doesn't even make any sense if she's not even the one with big boobs in her fantasy of what will happen if she repeats a year

now i always lean on the side of never attributing to malice what can be attributed to stupidity, and i was ready to just assume this was a piss-poor translation

but i found the scanlator making a post on the MangaDex forums about the situation, and in it they said this (reminder that the panel in question comes from chapter 58):

so it was intentional. it was a person actually trying to censor the original intent of the author because they didn't like that there was gay representation.

i'm done. i'm so fucking done with this.

"i have given up on the lame goal of censoring bocchi the rock" yeah that's a little too late pal. the damage this guy has done is still apparent because in almost all of the places online, including the TOP RESULT for searching "bocchi the rock manga", they still use this guy's awful, rushed, and - let's be honest - homophobic scans instead of the new ones that are actually good.

oh and of course only one guy in the thread actually calls out OP for censoring it in the first place, and then another guy backs up OP and that's the end of that.

these things are small, but it feels like being queer is just kinda not possible nowadays. everyone tries to take it away from us and it's inescapable, even in the places we go to in order to get away from all the bullshit and awful stuff happening in the real world.

stuff like this seems minor but it sends a very real message to queer fans of stuff like this:

we can't have anything.

7/23/22 - First 3-Chapter Arc! Chapters 38-40 are Out!

Hello again, everyone! I can't believe that I introduced myself and started this Japanese + scanlation thing only a year ago from today!

Chapters 38, 39, and 40 should be available on Mangadex right now! Please let me know what you all think of it.

Those astute to notice the titles for these chapters might be afraid because of what they’ve seen in the anime. Fear not, there are still a lot more manga chapters to come! (This volume came out in February 2016 and the anime came out around October 2016... Again, it’ll be around two more volumes until we’ll reach post-anime manga content!)

Also, I’ve recently come across some cultural information that might prove interesting for the Extra chapter 27.5 Poco’s First Errand. I’ll add it to the original post that was published on 2/28/22. Please be sure to check it out!

JUST ANOTHER MANGA RECOMMENDATION:

RAISE WA TANIN GA II

(Disclaimer: This is all based on my perception and my understanding of the manga. If there are any factual mistakes, please inform me!)

Genre: Romance, Action, a bit gory and violent

The story follows Somei Yoshino, the granddaughter of a major yakuza group in Osaka. She is sent to Tokyo after being arranged to marry the grandson of the Miyama family, another major yakuza group in order to unite the warring Kanto and Kansai regions.

Little did she know that the man she was to marry, Miyama Kirishima, has a few screws loose in his head, shocking her to a tee. All throughout, Yoshino must power through an unfamiliar Tokyo in the midst of dangerous yakuza, violent fiances and malicious plots against her. But hey, she's from a yakuza family too, and Yoshino doesn't back down from a fight

Plot: Let's see, the premise is pretty generic and broad. I thought it was going to be Nisekoi all over again, just with less romance, more action and violence, and minus the harem (lol jk kirishima has a lot of side chicks). Nevertheless, I liked it. I like how it shows the everyday life of Yoshino living in Tokyo, and I also love whenever there is trouble brewing. The broad plotline is redeemed by the characters anyway (just Yoshino ngl)

Characters: Man. I really love Somei Yoshino. She's freakin badass. Not at first though.

She's actually pretty normal when she's in a normal setting, and can also adapt in whatever situation she's in. That's actually one of her best qualities: the flexibility to just go with whatever is happening and weather through it. Yoshino is first seen as a typical girl, but when Kirishima finally shows his true colors triggering her rage, she easily got back to him.

That's why there is some sense that Yoshino is the only one who can handle Kirishima and his manipulative/masochistic/playboy tendencies. She takes no shit and isn't afraid to do anything, which makes him obsess over love Yoshino even more. Plus she is able to read Kirishima like a book now, even knowing a few of his secrets no matter how he tries to hide it (i.e. his side chicks). Yoshino isn't some weak and clumsy protagonist, she's actually smart; able to match with Kirishima and could handle him whenever he goes apesht.

I dislike Kirishima though. He's dangerous and unpredictable. He can give you a smile one second and then murder you in a bat of an eye. He's pretty interesting though as a character. Yet the fact that he can easily betray Yoshino when he was bored of her is just so scary that it's right for her to want to go home. If he wasn't "in love" with her, he probably had sold her off somewhere. I dont think he'll ever change, he can soften up, but not change. He's insane ngl and I dont want Yoshino to end up with him ://

However bc of yakuza politics which could end up in a gang war if she runs away, Yoshino has no choice but to stay put for now.

Art: Alright, the art is pretty unique. It's not something you typically see in manga and it takes some time to get used to, but in end I liked it! I must also say S++ for the tattooes. Tattooes are a big part of yakuza culture and to draw it perfectly and so beautifully is just 👌 also i have to add plus points for drawing my ideal type on manga, I have a new anime crush now thank you (rest assured its not kirishima)

Overall: I love it! It's heart pumping and I just wanna cheer on the main character!! I want to see more how she handles her whole situation especially when her world has always been this volatile. So check this out if you like a lot of action, interesting characters and yakuza-cenetered manga!! It's in mangadex!

Mangadex went down so I read alot 1/7

Lets review a bunch of isekai and related stuff I binged because mangadex went down. The scale will be a single thumbs up to a single thumbs down in terms of how much I would consider recommending it in general.

Legend

Chapters 1-51 Pretty straight forward in most aspects. For the best. Nothing crazy bad or good happening, making it surprisingly straight forward for an isekai. [Insert isekai startup here] but this time the MC is given a super magic body and the knowledge of ancient magic. Which he promptly uses to create a griffon buddy. Gets a THUMB IN THE UPPER CORNER for just being a nice, believable stay in a world, but I have read some stuff that really has interesting sparks the way this doesnt. MC is brutal at times and General Princess is cute. They make a good pair for each other. Although there are no ecchi situations, that artist really knows how to slide in the lewds, whether its mid combat flourishes or pre chapter artwork.

The Black Create Summoner: Revolt of Reincarnated

All Chapters

Truly is revolting. A resounding THUMBS DOWN. Apparently this was just an advertisement manga, which means that its intentionally incomplete and unsatisfying. Ontop of that, the sketchy artwork was generally rough and got worse to look at the more it went on. [Insert isekai startup here] but this time he has a grimoire that lets him summon stuff he draws. The power isn’t used that much though or in that creative of ways. Characters didn’t really leave an impact except maybe the elf little sister that is stubborn yet knows she is incompotent and recruits a dragon out of stubbornness.

Minotaur’s Sweetheart

Chapters 1-16

So what if a minotaur accidentally seduced the adventurer that was assigned to kill him? This is a good romance manga deserving a THUMBS UP because the pure-hearted minotaur boy and the unmarriageable adventurer girl actually develop a relationship and progress as people. The manga is ultimately about monsters and humans interacting and is fresh due to having a plot that evolves the situation a lot beyond the initial setup of the manga.

Moon-led Journey Across Another World

Chapters 1-64

[Insert isekai startup here] but this time the god of the new world calls the MC ugly and banishes him to the edge of the world to die off. In order to help out the MC, the god of our world (Tsukuyomi) gives him a bit of power. The MC is funny to watch once you realize that he is an incredibly cautious pureboy and expecting every common street thug to potentially end him but in reality he is a god-rivaling cataclysm himself and never realizes. He is so powerful that he recruits the blue haired mist dragon, Tomoe, and accidentally turns her into a weeaboo. Tomoe can read minds and access pocket space with her mist ontop of her sick weeaboo katana skills. She really shines as the most mature person in the story, gaining information that no one else in the story has and carefully withholding it from the MC in order to protect his innocence. She is a DAMN good tomboyish waifu and sarashii is a blessing. Other main girl is yandere spider, Mio, which has shockingly good and well conveyed bouts of emotion. She has an extremely rare “can’t cook at all” joke that is explained due to her “eat literally anything” nature. In terms of plot, the MC hates the god of the world he is in and pretty much plans to do everything she doesn’t want him to. Which means mingling with humans, and eventually, god slaying/usurption. Odd think about this manga is that it’s heavily Japanese-inspired. That may sound odd because its a manga, but generally isekai are most medieval/western skinned than this one which leans in on Japanese mythos. Just look at the god of our world in the manga.

THUMBS UP.

The Unsuccessful yet Academically Unparalleled Sage ~A Cheating S-Rank Sorcerer's Post-Rebirth Adventurer Log~

Chapter 1-10 So lets set up this genre here. This is a part of the “reincarnation” genre, which is a spinoff of isekai. They generally depict a very capable mage who reincarnates themselves into the future of their own world. At which point they realize that although they were pretty strong in their day, they are now practically a god in the deteriorated modern day. This genre will hereby be indicated by [Insert reincarnation startup here]. For this manga in specific, [Insert isekai startup here] but this time the MC could only use lightning magic and was the best at it but failed the gene gacha then [Insert reincarnation startup here] and he fails gene gacha again but is still the walking thunder god. These kinds of manga are always precious when the MC can walk through the world and see the fruits of their past labor. Specifically through Merlin, the MC’s adopted demon daughter who has grown up to be his heritor and bridge human/demon relationships. Truly adorable and heart warming. Lacks a bit of spice from themeing or ongoing plot due to its short length however. THUMB IN THE UPPER CORNER.

Older Elite Knight is cute only in front of me

Chapters 1-17.1

THUMBS UP. This is an oneshota manga where shota is a chad with incredibly good tastes. A really good ecchi manga with a light hearted story featuring Haru(the shota) knight that joins Karen’s(the oneesan) knight crew. As with all good romance manga, the main plot isn’t romance. Knight shenanigins are always happening, with a big (and lewd) bad entering recently. Top tier variation on the lewds, even including a princess loli in on the fun. Must read for all oneshota fans.

Lonely Attack on A Different World

Chapter 1-91

[Insert isekai startup forma de classroom here] but this time the MC gets leftover garbage skills and has to learn to survive. Learning to survive thus makes him the most op and he can magic trick his way out of literally anything. Strong start as the whole classroom first tries to get their footing, but after the starting arc is done this manga starts spinning it’s wheels. The manga is kinda lacking in themes, overarching plot and end goals, so stuff just happens to make this a sort of slice of life trap room escape manga. Magic “just works” in this universe so its not very dramatic when the MC pulls out a new trick out of his bag of million tricks. Just kinda stagnates too much for my liking. THUMB IN THE BOTTOM CORNER.

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer

Chapters 1-34

Rentt Faina, the MC, is a good guy with no talent who aspires to be a legendary adventurer. But then he gets turned into a skeleton, giving the chance to evolve his way to greatness, kinda like in Spider isekai or Dragon isekai. The MC is most like Goblin Slayer in his serious and knowledgeable approach to the world, how characters that know him revere him. End goal so far is just him seeing how far he can evolve as he comes across other vampires and vampire hunters. Really want to see him go to the top. Fuckin great art. Girls drawn perfect. Like the hat on the guild girl, but nothing beats the witch Lorraine. THUMBS UP.

Teihen Ryoushu No Kanchigai Eiyuutan

Chapters 1-13

THUMB IN UPPER CORNER. Pretty funny comedy about a lord of a poor land who wants to be a stereotypical evil lord but can only use healing magic. Therefore he bumbles his way into accepting a heretical cult nun, beast men who hate humans, etc. All the girls are to crazy for him to want to sex them(weak. give the assassin nun your babies). Most interesting parts are aforementioned nun, his fujoshi assistant, and the MC’s willingness to use his power to commit heretical and immoral warcrimes.

The Undead Lord of the Palace of Darkness

Chapters 1-11

Art average, don’t come to this one for spectacle. It’s strength is in the subertfuge that it’s recently-necromanced-back-to-life MC goes through to get his Master killed and to later, probably, evolve into a vampire. MC isn’t evil though, just wants to survive. Main girl on cover was born and raised to hunt vampires but has a compassionate heart. Obviously she goes easy on and relates to MC. Story is still kinda in it’s first arc so the overall trajectory of the story is a bit hard to gauge and not quite satisfying enough by its own right. Probably a thumb up with more chapters but for now THUMB IN THE UPPER CORNER.

The Reincarnated Inferior Magic Swordsman

Chapters 1-38

[Insert isekai startup here] but this time.... uh... THUMB SIDEWAYS. Usually I am patient, but 31 chapters with no goal and just barely plot? Wow. Saving grace is uh... I guess the world of “other isekai people existed but they sucked because they didn’t level uncap like MC” could go somewhere but. I take it back, lowering this one to a THUMB DOWN.

The Invincible Sage in the Second World.

Chapters 1-12

[Insert isekai startup here] but this time a pro mmo player in a game called “Broken Balance Online.” Guess what his class, the sage class, was considered in the game? Not far along enough to really pop off but it isn’t horrible. MC is moderately cautious to a healthy degree which is actually rare in most isekai. THUMB IN BOTTOM LEFT CORNER.

The Dark Queen and I Strike Back

Chapters 1-29.5

Although technically an isekai, no isekai startup here. This a battle manga with a big mystery on the backdrop of a war. That is to say, the MC gets teleported to a world to kill the demons but he ends up defending them from the humans with all he’s got. Of special note is the complete seriousness of this manga that whiplashes into debauchery like tentacles, the above cover, oneshota, and even really dark jokes in some of the omake. That tonal lash effect will be either make or break, and it is a HUGE make for me. I love when a single piece can have both absolute serious scenes and utterly lighthearted and fluffy ones. Or in this case utterly lewd ones. May the average-human-amount-of-perverted MC one day slam some demon lord loli. THUMBS UP.

Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers

Chapters 1-24

THUMB SIDEWAYS. Has the feeling of a nerfed slime isekai. Nerfed in all ways except romance. Art surprisingly good.

Damn you got me when you said Sun is more badass than in the drama you know how dramas nerf the ML from novels anyways or change things where it doesn't do the OG characters justice. I hope she doesn't push him away a lot and misunderstands him like she did early on in the drama I know this isn't a romance story but I do love my action and romance so couldn't help but love them as a couple when watching the drama. Oh that sounds so cute where she blushes when he asks her so they have a

better relationship early on then the drama did and we see them grow closer throughout their time together? Oh tell me all the Cp moments you sold me on this lol I need all the spoilers for them I thought I liked them in the drama but I can tell I'll love them more in the manga version. By the way do you think you can link me to it so I can read it? I thought you meant the character as well as Changge family and friends wanted them to kiss already lol. How different is Sun like he's still an amazing general like in the manga right? I did hear about Sun not knowing she's a girl for a while when is that revealed? Doesn't he fall for her even though he thinks she's a guy? I actually didn't mind too much of Sun saving her a lot isn't she more of a strategist than a fighter? But that might be because I only watched the drama. Does Pusa not like Sun? I'm sure people are wary of him because he was part of the Ashille Tribe. Oh what did the letter say? I remember him writing one in the drama but I assume what he says something different. Oh man this is SO MUCH more CP moments for them than the drama ever did and I can't wait for it. What chapter is it on right now? I hope the hiatus is over soon so I can read even more when I get close to getting caught up. Sorry for sending multiple messages I tried responding to most of what you said but I might've missed some I wish tumblr had a higher character limit.

YES! I can't even say they nerfed his characterization because drama!Sun vs manhua!Sun are two completely different characters. Like I said, still a badass and definitely still an amazing general.

Also, there is no misunderstanding in the manhua like the drama. Simply because the drama sped up how they met. They met in the capital, various times throughout their journal, and finally again when they are standing on opposite sides of the battlefield. In the manhua, Chang Ge and Sun do not meet or know each other until they are on opposite sides of the battlefield.

Like the drama, she loses the final battle and he has her become his military strategist. (My memory gets a little fuzzy at this point). But he doesn't trust her at first and she proved herself (intelligence-wise and saving his butt) so then he's like, thank you for saving me; I now consider you my good brother. Manhua-Sun is very... simple? He is very obvious in his likes and dislikes. If he trusts you, he gives his 100%, if he doesn't then he is not going to pretend to like you.

He finds out her gender after she goes missing. In both the manhua and drama, she ends up at a Taoist temple. So while he was searching for her he encounters Old Man Qin? Was that his name? I honestly can't remember. The interaction goes something like this:

Mujin: We asked around but found no young man fitting that description. Old Man Qin: Oh, maybe you should ask around for a young woman instead. Sun: *spit take* also *blushx100*

I honestly can't remember if he falls for her while still thinking she was a guy. He probably was feeling some type of way but there was no real indication of his feelings during that time. Sun was obviously super embarrassed when he found out that she was a girl but anything beyond that is up in the air. But when he actually sees her, he does admit to Mujin that she's "kinda pretty" is his exact words, I'm pretty sure.

So, the reason I didn't like Sun saving Chang Ge so much isn't because she is more of a military strategist than a fighter... Although, I am pretty sure the drama also made her physically weaker than she is in the manhua. What annoyed me the most was (again, this is me comparing drama!Chang Ge to manhua!Chang Ge) manhua!Chang Ge would have never gotten herself into the situations she got into in the drama. I'm not saying she is intelligent just because the drama/manhua says she is. She comes up with plans and plans behind plans; she would have maneuvered and manipulated herself out of the situation. Girl thinks three steps ahead and if something does not go her way, she is able to adjust her plan accordingly.

Pusa's relationship with Sun is more of "you have an ambiguous relationship with my niece and I am not sure how I feel about that." Anyway, their relationship is hilarious. Pusa's relationship with Chang Ge is hilarious as well. I just love Pusa.

I honestly can't remember what the letter in the manhua said. I think it was something like, "Beautiful Han girl. I like." in horrible handwriting. LOLOL Definitely something just as cheesy.

It's currently on Chapter 61. And yeah, I think the hiatus will be over soon. Bilibili and Teacher Xia Da made an announcement that the manhua was going to get reserialized again late November of 2020 but we haven't gotten an actual date yet. There's also going to be an animation, which I am pretty excited about. I don't care what form it comes at me in, I just want more Chang Ge Xing!

Joou Heika no Isekai Strategy

Chapters 1-18

Its about a girl being slowly mindbroken into being evil ft spiders. Eh. Its no Overlord. THUMB IN BOTTOM CORNER.

Candy & Cigarettes

Chapters 1-20

THUMBS UP. Mangaka really gets it. They are a super saiyan god super saiyan tier lolicon and it shows. This manga WILL turn you into a lolicon. Now about the manga, Miharu is cold blooded. Love all the dumb simple “I HEART KILL” tier shirts she wears. Characters arcs for both the MCs are on point. Story always progressing towards its big goal in good feeling ways. Art is top tier. Very funni americans. What more could you want from a loli assassin x old man cleaner manga?

Tensei Goblin dakedo Shitsumon aru?

Chapters 1-28

Somethings not connecting with this one for me. [Insert isekai startup here] but this time its a goblin who can live as old as a human instead of dying in like 3 days like a normal goblin. Magic is skill exclusive and skills get passed on when someone dies. So obviously a demon lord gives the MC a skill. No interesting skills really outside the time related one. Plot kinda lame because its city building but the goals of the story in building the city aren’t stated(beyond become demon lord) and nothing too interesting happens. Tensura and Death Attribute Magician do everything this attempts but way better. THUMBS DOWN.

Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboeteinai no ka?

Chapters 1-30

Feels like Guilty Crown. Not Code Geass, Guilty Crown specifically. Huge and important difference. Especially with the way the main character’s powers are handled. They are sort of ethereal and the MC is incredibly weak without this god weapon. Good art for boss battles, art is usually photo-realistic backgrounds but drawn characters. Nice world building to really build the dread of saving the world. Nice mystery behind everything as well but ultimately THUMB IN UPPER CORNER. Strong feeling of dumb fun throughout.

Seirei Gensouki

Chapters 1-35

Way too long for me to not feel neither the pulse of the theme nor the pulse of the overarching plot. Everything feels like its been building up and just setting up something world altering potentially. No idea what it is at all. Like to see worlds with multiple isekaiers in them tho. Read some of the doujins by the artist. Nice dr2 one. This manga is totally different though, being a somber story about a hero turned undead that has to go on one more adventure through the world he fought to protect. But he is a total goofball so chiaroscuro ensues. THUMBS UP.

Very similar to Tensura. Really like how this MC is kinda forced into their situation and tries to make the best country they can BUT are constantly being manipulated politcally despite his overwhelming physical power. Fun read. THUMBS UP.

Of course he can’t once he pretends to be the demon lord, pretends to be a vigilante, and then befriends the actual demon lord. Feels good in a slice of life ish way while also having plot. THUMBS UP.

Maou-sama no Machizukuri!: Saikyou no Dungeon wa Kindai Toshi

Chapters 1-29

Lets build this town, demon lords! Actually quite a lot of likable characters in this one. All of the MC’s entourage go through some form of character development too which is commendable. THUMBS UP. Best girl has to be Demon Lord of Wind, Stolas.

Senken no Majutsushi to Yobareta Kenshi

THUMB IN UPPER CORNER. Feels like a reincarnation manga because the world is setback in development and MC is OP in comparison. Also twins are discriminated against in this world because twin demons hurt the goddess in a fight long ago. MC hates the goddess in the vastly religious world. Pretty unique for what it is. Also MC fights with swordmancy which is pretty based.

Shitsugyou Kenja no Nariagari: Kirawareta Sainou wa Sekai Saikyou deshita

Chapters 1-43

Starts off with the [hyper compotent person kicked out of complete idiot hero party] setup, but this aint really about that. It is REALLY about an OP shota learning how to work for a --cute demon lord-- company that isn’t awful like all the human ones. What can I say? Necromancer shota x bastet, the demon lord of lust? THUMBS UP.
