SAMIRA FOUND HERSELF FALLING INTO AN ALL TOO FAMILIAR PATTERN OF RESTLESSNESS ONCE AGAIN. She was exhausted. Yet, try as she might to sleep, to get some rest for the next fight, for whatever responsibility would inevitably fall on her shoulders; the mixture of insomnia and night terrors made sure that her mind remained wide awake. She'd taken to milling about the room, pacing in front of the couch she'd made into her bed, in the hopes that doing something else other than laying there staring at the ceiling could shake the edginess she felt. She'd been trying to make as little noise as possible so as not to awake her roommate, but after a few laps around the small space she turned to find Quinn already standing in the middle of the room with Atlas at his legs.
Her restlessness had become a nightly occurrence and a rather troublesome thorn in her side, in both their sides really. Moving to Quinn's place was supposed to have quelled some of the lingering anxiety and, at the very least, afforded her some comfort in knowing she was much safer there, rather than all alone in the middle of the woods where just about anybody could waltz right up to her home. Instead it had turned into neither of them getting a decent night's sleep, and them quietly conversing until either she finally drifted off or the morning sun light filtered through the windows. Now they both sat on the couch, the sides of their legs pressed against one another, her weight leaning into his side just a bit too heavily as they talked, while she absentmindedly pet Atlas's head resting in her lap.
@sgtdarling sent: ❝ when we’re done, we’ll go wherever you want. ❞
Tumblr media
"Wherever I want? And you're paying for all of it, right? Then I guess I better pick somewhere really nice." It felt good to talk about the future. To talk as if either of them could have a life after all of this was over. That it would be as simple as packing up everything that had happened over the last year into a tidy little square, and leaving it all behind in a suitcase. Never to be opened again. She was smart enough to know that was not how it worked. Trauma was a pervasive, invisible wound that didn't just disappear due to a change of scenery. She knew that and so did he, there was no running away from the demons of the past.
In the back of her mind, she acknowledged that neither of them would likely ever be able to completely return to normal, despite whatever plans they hatched together. But that didn't stop her from entertaining the idea of taking a long vacation away from Hope County. Of clinging to that small shred of hope that maybe there was a chance at life after all this. "I miss the ocean." She admits, fingers rhythmically drifting through Atlas's fur. "So wherever we go there'll have to be a beach, preferably somewhere sunny. Maybe Hawaii? Or even Bali? What about Greece?"

2022 Review + Rezzo 2023
This post is almost a week late because I was trying to take it easy after my Bali meditation + fam vacation trip. This year end trip really made me appreciate the slow life where I was really trying not to overthink and over-plan. (Also, geez, what happened to me? When did I become this sort of person?)
It's only been 2 days into the new year and I'm beginning to feel tired of the super-fast pace of work life again. I must remind myself to take it down a notch, as John Green says. I'm not working in a hospital – nobody will die if my job doesn't get done.
But first, let's recap some things I'm really grateful for in 2022, in no particular order -
Gratitude list 2022
Tumblr media
1. My parents: They are not perfect but they are always doing their best to care for us the ways they know how. I'm learning new things about their outlook in life recently. My mom is an optimist that makes the best out of every sucky unexpected situation because she just wants everyone to feel ok. I think I probably got that from her. My father cares a lot about the world at large. Although we have different views of what "good" is, I appreciate that side of him.
2. National Library Board: Ok nerd. I feel like somehow I'm reading more books than ever this year. And really starting to get back more into physical books. Although I still love Libby for its convenience, sometimes reading on digital devices can be distracting. So I really appreciate having such a great library system in Sg – I can choose either to hang out at a nearby air-conditioned library or just to lie in bed and scroll Libby on my phone. It's the top perk of being Singaporean IMO.
3. Authors: I cannot not mention the people that wrote those books I enjoyed so much from the library. Some of the books that moved me last year:
Jon Yates - Fractured: Why Our Societies Are Coming Apart and How We Put Them Back Together Again.
Brene Brown - Braving Wilderness, Dare to Lead, Atlas of the Heart (also her podcasts have helped me so much last year)
Hank Green - I don't read enough fiction so these YA books were a surprise pleasure for me: An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor
Yanis Varoufakis - Talking to My Daughter About The Economy
4. The 3-Headed-Oracle: We completed 2 more writing challenges this year! I really appreciate the way we kept so consistent with this habit through the process, and got to know how each other thinks. I enjoyed learning how we see the world through different lenses, having their perspectives was really valuable and precious.
5. Workshops attended: Learning new self-awareness, critical thinking and communication skills at 2 in-person workshops which both happened at Common Ground - Facilitating Conversations for Change (by Shiao-yin), and Seeing & Shifting Systems (by Studio Dojo). These courses were so perspective-expanding that I wish more people would have the chance to attend. So I'm also grateful that my company has L&D funds for us to upskill ourselves.
6. Vipassana: Renewing my meditation practice at a 10-day course, and getting to disconnect from the world temporarily. Really amazing to have the opportunity to do that again after more than 6 years, such a privilege. This is my third time doing it but I somehow still gained new understanding and wisdom this time around.
7. XD Summer Offsite: Something about work - Meeting all my XD colleagues in person at our offsite in Prague. Even though this trip was expensive (they flew all of us in SG down) it was also necessary to at least start the process of gaining trust and building connections in the newly re-organized team.
8. Standing up XD Ops: Finally given the opportunity to upstand this new function officially in the group. I also learned that sometimes the right thing to do is to actively ask for things and not just wait for them to drop from the sky. Unsaid expectations and unset boundaries will just cause resentment. This is a huge theme this year for work. Clear is kind.
Intention review 2022
Tumblr media
So what did I say I wanted to do last year? Balance? I regretfully say I did not achieve that. I was too busy balancing other people's priorities while neglecting my own. I was reading and learning a lot more, desperately trying to get more information about why things happen the way they do, trying to get more tools that could help solve the problems I see. As a result, I was feeling quite burnt out at some point, and people around me noticed.
I guess that was what pushed me to sign myself up to do a 10-day silent retreat again. I have to forcefully shut myself away and disconnect from the external world to find out what is happening inside myself.
A lot of things came up for me during my time meditating - the past, the future, imagination of things that has yet to come, assumptions of how things came to be. I have to remind myself, all these are anicca, impermanent. Stories in my mind that arise and will pass away. I am not the same person just 1 millisecond ago, what for carrying this baggage forward? What is more important is the choices I can make in the present moment, which is to sit here and observe my breathe and my body sensations. That's the only true thing.
Knowing all these theoretically is one thing, but the benefit of having these 10 day silent protected time is for us to actually start the process of rewiring our brains and stop the habitual impulse reactions of daily life.
But still, I guess these 10 days are not enough. I was refreshed and ready for the new year, yet, just 2 days in, facing all these unread emails and to-do lists leftover from last year, I'm starting to feel tired again. This won't do.
Intentions 2023
1. Spend more time practicing meditation. From past experience of previous retreats, my self-discipline has not been very strong when it comes to daily sittings. This a new strategy this time is to join a regular group. I've put a recurring event on my calendar to attend a weekly group sitting. Hopefully, this will help me maintain my practice.
2. Help my family be more healthy. In both body and mind. My parents are getting older, and although they are actively doing exercise by themselves, I think they would also benefit from learning Vipassana and begin the reduce their mental burden of growing old (and having the worrisome baggage of 3 single adult children lol). I'm also seeing how my bro is suffering from health problems because of an unhealthy lifestyle. He too could benefit from being more mindful of his habits. It may be a tall order to have them sign up for a 10-day meditation course, but hey, I've done harder things! 3. Turn things down a notch. I know it's counter-intuitive to say I have a deadline, but I've told my boss that I want to leave for my postgrad studies by the next year. So during this timeframe, I'm going to try my best to see what things I can create automated or self-running systems around, and maximize things that can be left undone. In short, how can I make myself dispensable? 4. Continue to serve others and build relationships, but be less "bottom". I used to think that there is a freedom that comes with being invisible and ego-less, and have used that easygoingness to get people to trust me and thus get what I need to be done. But I am starting to learn that doing things this way can be effective earlier in my career, but does not scale when I reached a certain level. Sometimes the right and kind actions are to actively set boundaries, keep clarifying situations, and align expectations. Don't try to be everything for everyone, instead, how can I help others learn how to help each other and help themselves?

Terus kalau emang begitu, sebenarnya gue sedang memperjuangkan apa?
Haaaaaaaahhhhhhh.
Akhirnya gue menemukan dia.

Tumblr media
The oldest of the four "imperial cities" of Morocco (the others are Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat), Fes was the capital of Morocco several times in the past, the last of which ended in 1912, when most of Morocco came under French control and Rabat was chosen to be the capital of the new colony. Today Fes is the third largest city in Morocco after Casablanca and Rabat.
Fes is often referred to as the spiritual capital of Morocco. It was once one of the most important places of scholarship in the world, containing within its walls the bastion of Islamic teaching. The University of Al-Karaouine was founded in 859 AD and is the oldest continuously-operating university in the world.
WHAT TO VISIT
CHOUARA TANNERY
Colorful Moroccan slippers, bags, and jackets are just some of the leather goods available in Fes. But before shopping, be sure to check out the world-famous tanneries to see the traditional dying of animal skins
Tumblr media
The ancient MEDINA
WATER CLOCK
UNIVERSITY
The Kairaouine Mosque is known to be the world’s oldest university and is the second-largest mosque in Morocco. It is one of the most important religious buildings in Fes, and as such, only Muslims are allowed inside.
Explore the SOUKS
The souks are the very soul of any Moroccan city, and the ones in Fes are some of the most impressive. Step back into a medieval time of dusty walled streets, where the only transport is donkey and cart. It’ll be an assault on the senses, with sellers shouting prices and striking hard bargains, aromatic smells coming from every direction, and textile displays in all colors of the rainbow.
NEJJARINE FONDOUK
Right amid Place Nejjarine, surrounded by metalworker workshops, you'll find the Nejjarine Museum in an old fondouk (khan or caravanserai), which has been transformed into a museum exhibiting the diversity of traditional Moroccan wooden arts and crafts
VISIT THE BAB BOUJELOUD (BLUE GATE)
The Bab Boujiloud is the iconic blue gate that marks the entrance to Fes el Bali (Old City). You can also check out the Bab Chorfa, another impressive gate framing the Medina.

DAILY TRIPS FROM FES
MEKNÈS 📍
Only 65 kilometers southwest of Fes, and connected by regular trains, Meknes is a favorite day-tripping destination for visitors to the city.
This imperial city, made the ruling capital by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, is home to a compact medina area that offers a more relaxed sightseeing experience than the crowded medinas of Fes and Marrakesh. This allows for easier viewing of the alleyway architecture.
Tumblr media
Neighboring the medina is Meknes' imperial district, home to the grand Bab al-Monsour, one of the most ornate surviving gateways in North Africa, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, with its fine tile work and stucco-decorated interior.
Tumblr media
Meknes is also the closest city to Volubilis, Morocco's best Roman-era ancient site. The rambling hilltop site, only 32 kilometers north of Meknes, is home to half-toppled temple buildings, still-standing columns along a colonnaded street, and intricate mosaic floors.
If you start early enough from Fes, it's easy to combine both in one day. Daily trip for 25€ each.
2. IFRANE NATIONAL PARK 📍
Ifrane National Park is located in the northcentral part of Morocco.  It is situated in the central part of the Atlas mountain range. The park covers an area of 193.05 square miles (500 sq km).
The mountainous national park is blanketed in many parts with the Atlas cedar trees. Wetlands, high-altitude forests, and endemic habitats are part of what make the national park such a vital protected area.
The altitude of the park ranges from 4,590 to 7,874 (1,300 to 2,400 m) above sea level. The higher mountains are located in the neighboring Toubkal National Park which features the famous Mount Toubkal.
Approximately a tenth of the world’s population of Atlas Cedar is located here in the park. The ecosystem is also home to the endangered Barbary Macaque with approximately 25% of the entire global population found here in Ifrane. Daily trip for 25€ each.
Tumblr media
3. CHEFCHAOUEN 📍
Chefchaouen is a small town in Morocco with a rich history. Nestled in the Rif mountains, this old town is known for its beautiful surroundings and architecture, but what makes it stand out are the striking and varying shades of blue walls – it is one of The Most Colorful Cities Around The World.
Moulay Ali Ben Moussa founded the town of Chefchaouen in 1471. It began as a small fortress to fight the Portuguese invasions of Morocco. The Ghomara tribes, Moriscos, and Jews settled down in it after the Spanish Reconquista in 1492. Later, in 1920, Spain seized the old town, and it became a part of Spanish Morocco. Then, finally, Morocco declared its independence in 1956, and Chechaouen rejoined it once again.
Tumblr media
The Reasons Why The City of Chefchaouen in Morocco is Entirely Blue:
The Jews
The color blue is representative of the sky according to Jewish belief. Jewish communities, therefore paint things blue and use blue-colored fabrics, especially prayer mats.
People believe that the Jewish refugees spread the blue fever to the entire ‘medina’ in 1930. The practice of painting walls blue was introduced by the Jews to stick to their religious practices. However, older residents say that the majority of the buildings within the medina used to be white until fairly recently. They stress that only the Jewish part of the medina used to be painted blue.
The Mosquitoes
A part of the residents believes that the blue shades repel mosquitoes. Their reasoning is that the insects do not like being in the water, although they live near the water. The blue walls almost look like flowing water, and they believe that this aspect keeps away the mosquitoes.
It is certainly possible that residents saw fewer mosquitoes in the Jewish part of the town, and so they decided to attribute it to the color and paint their houses blue as well.
Daily Trip from Fes for 30€ each.

This not only saves money but also allows you to enjoy a more authentic and relaxed experience at your destination. 3. Embrace Hostel Living Hostels are the budget backpacker's best friend. Choose hostels with positive reviews, communal spaces, and kitchen facilities. Not only do they offer affordable accommodation, but they also provide opportunities to meet fellow travelers, share tips, and form new friendships. 4. Bali for Christmas and NYE
Bali has long been known for it's warm weather, friendly locals, dazzling beach clubs and cheap but delicious food. It has been, and still is, a favourite destination for many Australians due to these reasons, and the fact that Bali is very close and the flight is very short.
Since I lived in the Middle East for most of my 20's, it never really crossed my mind to visit Bali on a proper vacation, as Europe was closer, and so that was where I mainly went in my leisure time. I did go once on vacation in 2017 with my parents, and it was nothing short of amazing, but I hadn't visited since then unless it was a short 20 hour layover with the airline I was working for.
This time, I went with my partner and some of his family, so there was quite a big group of us. The first week we stayed at a beautiful resort built in the late 80's called Merusaka, originally called INAYA Putri Bali, and we were there for Christmas. The first week consisted of lots of beach walks, margaritas by the pool, reading, working out, and for Christmas - a big luxurious lunch at the beautiful St Regis Bali. The only complaint any of us had was that air conditioning was not working in our rooms as it should, so we were often sweating in our hotel rooms! However, the resort's staff were always smiling and ready to assist, the pools were clean and a good temperature, the food and drink was all included and had a great variety, and the beach was in close proximity to the resort, so daily walks were very enticing.
Nusa Dua is best for: relaxing at your resort and/or spending your days at the beach, as it isn't too heavy on nightlife or partying (that's not to say that you can't do those things in Nusa Dua).
The second week, we spent at a gorgeous villa in the heart of Canggu, which I'll be making a seperate post about as it amongst the nicest accommodation I've ever stayed at! We stayed directly across from Finns Beach Club, and the biggest beach club in the world (or so they say) Atlas Beach Club, but luckily we couldn't hear the loud music as we slept in our luxurious queen bed. Also, the air conditioning was set to a perfect 18 degrees, so entering the room was the most refreshing and satisfying feeling, and made it so ideal for sleeping. Canggu, like Nusa Dua, is great for beach goers, as well as those who love to party. I'm not quite the party girl anymore (I did most of that in my early-mid 20's), but I appreciated the variety of things to see and do in the beautiful coastal village. I got hooked on coconut water and pampering myself, and didn't drink as much alcohol as I anticipated. However, this was due to the food poisoning, Bali belly, or stomach bug (I still don't know what it was) that I got while I was over there. I never felt so sick - vomiting violently all throughout the night after a week of being nauseous. And that really, was the only downside of my week in Canggu.
Canggu is best for: nightlife, boutique shops, trendy cafes/restaurants, and surf.
In conclusion: my two week holiday to Bali was fulfilling - I got to unwind and relax, get pampered (Bali massages are not to miss), eat great food, learn more about the Balinese culture and people, and just switch off from reality back home.
Next on the blog: I will be talking about my stunning villa in Canggu, which I cannot stop going on about to this day!
