Libra - The Love Spell of Aphrodite's Alchemy

The Libra glyph forms the shape of a vanity table, the mirror on the surface. Libra is however, by no means a seamless reflection without substance, she is the Morning light star shining brightest in the sky, the glow we all cherish and know, part of the world we belong to. The mirror does not display what is truly there, it can embellish, distort, and cast back ideals in some form of elusive sorcery or trickery. We know this well.

Saturn is the historical alchemist and exalts in Libra. Interpersonally, Libra catches qualities, arrangements of beauty, love, and observation to weld in Saturn’s alchemist’s laboratory. The creative vision of Aphrodite infuses through this to blend a melody that plays her personality like a cosmic pan flute. This invites everybody through Libra to glimpse at themselves reflecting from her, so it also means people can instantly relate and engage, but also idealise, possess, and place their expectations upon.

Libra senses people, their vibration and auric presence. She traces their cosmic design, sketches their faces, and reads their mind. The Libra mirror is a cosmic potion, stirred by the Great Wizard himself with the glitter dust of Venus reflecting an image that beguiles something uniquely different inside of everyone. Libra is the autumn equinox when light blends into darkness, so there is polarity, revelation, and cohesion conveyed through this visual, and thus Libra can reveal unacknowledged and savage traits in other people that subject her to their projections of frustration, denial, ignorance, or intruige.

Narcissus lost his mind to suicide staring into his reflection by pool lead to by Aphrodite. Seduced by impossibility into fool’s paradise, many have gone mad looking into the Libra for too long and playing out their fantasies through her. Not by her doing, but by their own contorted desires and ideals that crack inside of them when she fails to reinforce their illusionary fabrication. She is very real, her influence is real, her body and intellect is real, her touch is real, and the people that she has moved in her life cannot deny that she has left something real, substantial, and irreplaceable inside of them.

Aphrodite rose from the magical water, and the energy of Saturn forms sensation into matter. Multiple cosmic forces experiment with the physical interface of Libra. Like the honey bee, she flutters between the flowers of interactive action and follows this with the personal reflection that transmutes the pollen of what she has learned, envisioned, observed in herself and in the world into the sweet, golden taste of God. Conscious self-reflection, acknowledgment, and sensual experience is vital for the higher expression of this energy. This practice also dissolves the mask, internal stability, imitation, and emptiness can arise when this energy has not been contained.

The Gnostic Teacher writes, “To create the soul is to create a vessel through which God can work. That soul or vessel is necessary in these times because the ego is so heavy and so complex we that we need a high voltage transmitter to direct our forces in an extremely potent and forceful way by the guidance of our Divine Mother to eliminate the ego”. The personality is an adaptable and vast performance of possibilities, capable of appearing and vanishing. But the conduit behind this, the very essence deep within Libra beyond any thought and comprehension is the authentic, true, and eternal being, a grand alchemist practicing sorcery, turning something invisible into gold and declaring its divine creativity.

What is Egyptian musk?

I'll say this up top: I would love to hear if you have any experience with Egyptian musk oils before 1980 (e.g., "My grandmother wore it in the 1950s") or if you've seen any documentation on Egyptian musk blends after "Ancient Egypt" (e.g., "In my reading, I've seen formulas going back to the 1800s"). I ran into a distinct historical gap here, within the scope of, you know, a tumblr post.

For the sake of clarity, let's capitalize Egyptian Musk, the fragrance blend, to differentiate it from "any musk (often civet) originating in Egypt," which you can also get.

A long while back, I had started trying to read up on what different musks were supposed to smell like. Siberian musk and China musk and white musk and black musk and red musk and blue musk and, and, and. Being neurodivergent, I get further into the weeds than most people might, and so you got a 1200-word deep-dive on modern synthetic musk. But along the way, I discovered that Egyptian Musk is not a single musk note; it's a distinct blend unto itself, and pretty much botanical. And I love that. I love the idea of a fragrance that's just an alchemy of plants suggesting the shape of musk, an olfactory sleight of hand.

The one I tried

After comparing some reviews a few months back, I decided that I would probably like Kuumba Made's. If I had known I would end up writing about this, I would have gotten a sample of Nemat's as well, which is supposedly more of a "typical Egyptian Musk" with its patchouli note. (I've heard that Auric Blends' popular Egyptian Goddess [1993] is actually an Egyptian Musk as well.) I don't smell patchouli at all in the Kuumba Made—rather, it has "notes of fresh water [?] and sanctifying sandalwood.”

On me, it's the softest, snuggliest sort-of-rose scent. I love roses in person, but the scent usually doesn't work very well on my skin—and yet this Egyptian Musk does, and in fact, it's so well-blended that I'm not even sure exactly what's in it. The balance shifts every time I wear it: sometimes I get sandalwood, sometimes vetiver, but rarely both at the same time. But it's always lovely. The only reason it's not my ~Signature Scent~ is because I am, in fact, a basic vanilla bitch, but it's very soothing, and it is in my top five Frequently Worn Fragrances. I'm curious, though—what are those "fresh water" notes, what's in this? Here’s the Fragrantica note pyramid for the Kuumba Made Egyptian Musk:

You see this a lot on Fragrantica note listings when Egyptian Musk is involved, like we're supposed to know what this is shorthand for—or maybe we're supposed to understand that it's a trade secret. Various sellers tend say theirs is a little different from everyone else's; user reviews will say, "I like this one more than that one; this one smells more like a traditional Egyptian Musk to me." What's our baseline here, though?

The ingredients of Egyptian Musk™

Amir Oud: A Brief History of Egyptian Musk Oils and Perfumes:

The typical Egyptian musk can be made from essential oils from home such as Frankincense, Myrrh, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Amber, Rose Petal, and Ambrette seed oil.  This will give you sort of an idea of the actual fragrance of the Egyptian musk. 

You may remember ambrette/musk mallow/annual hibiscus as the natural source of ambrettolide, a major synthetic musk; thus, ambrette is the most literal "musk" component of a modern Egyptian Musk. That said, most of the literal Musk From Egypt I've seen on offer has been civet, synthetic or otherwise.

But in addition to those notes, more than one seller offers (word for word, capital for capital), "Musky Vetiver and Myrrh, blended with sensual Patchouli and a hint of Rose," leaving out many of the other components. I'm not sure what's going on with the copypasta there (it's possible they're buying from a wholesale supplier who uses that description). But I'm 99% certain vetiver is in the Kuumba Made too, so let's consider that a typical ingredient as well.

The most complex formula I saw agrees with Amir Oud's, but this Zindoki.com version adds jasmine, "one drop of camphor," labdanum (you remember labdanum from amber accords), and "a deer musk or civet"—our Musk From Egypt. The Zindoki page also has the simplest characterization I saw: patchouli, rose, ambrette.

The various formulas I saw also had different proportions—some heavier on the rose and patchouli, some heavier on the frankincense and myrrh—and so, you can imagine how different one blend might smell from another. And that's before you start adding citrus top notes to fill out the pyramid, as some brands do. Nonetheless! A certain personality is taking shape.

And a number of articles and sellers claim that this personality is "Cleopatra." Allegedly, this was her favorite perfume. Which... I'm going to argue, no. Arguing literally, in a separate post that I am writing: the soft, subtle profile we're talking about here just does not match the pungent, spicy fragrances that historians and archaelogists are uncovering. In fact, Elena Vosnaki, who has written more about musk than I ever have or ever will in her multi-part musk series (NSFW photography), says,

Simply put, Egyptian musk does not originate in Egypt, but is simply a variant of a musk blend in which the clean, scrubbed-skin nuance is the dominant part.

And this is where I have to turn around and argue in the other direction. I get the general idea—Egyptian Musk belongs in a "soft and clean" category of scents, I'll agree with that. But it has a more specific character than just "a variant" of white dryer-sheet musk ("The laundry day feel is there"). I also think a blend with this cohesive a character, this widely used, had to come from somewhere, at some time. I'm just not sure when or where.

Where in spacetime does Egyptian Musk come from?

Short answer: As a traditional blend somewhere between today and Ancient Egypt? I don't know.

Long answer: As you would buy it today? New York in the 1980s.

Back to the Musk Series:

Famous examples in [modern] use include the perennial Narciso For Her, where the fractialised patchouli (keeping the cleaner aspects) and the synthetic white flowers are highlighted by the clean muskiness of the base and smoothed out by a recent amber molecule, Amberlyn, and a hint of honey. The Cuban born designer was inspired by an Egyptian musk oil he used to buy in New York City along his friend and muse Caroline Bessette-Kennedy. (It turns out it was Abdul Kareem's Egyptian Musk).

Now we're getting somewhere:

"I used to buy the stuff from head shops or sidewalk vendors in Harvard Square. About seven-odd years ago, I found a variation (by Abdul Kareem, which, the internet tells me, is an ’80s NYC-born scented-oil brand)"

According to Makeup Alley users, as of three years ago, you could buy the genuine article from an ebay seller (look at the Olfactoria review), but I don't see a Charlotte Vale now. There's only one listing at all, in fact, and Etsy searches don't seem to yield genuine Abdul Kareem results. That said, you might still be able to buy it in person; a number of users on Fragrantica and Makeup Alley mention buying Egyptian musk oils from shops and sidewalk vendors like the ones Fiorella Valdesolo mentions in the article—years ago, but you never know.

Now, what's interesting about the 1980s part is this:

Bargz: A Guide To Egyptian Musk And Egyptian Musk Products:

In the 1880s, scientist Albert Bauer discovered synthetic-derived fragrances that resemble musk ingredients. This synthetic approach gave way to laws in 1979 that protected musk deer and other animals from being hunted. 

I don't know who came up with what first, and what tradition may or may not have existed before 1980s NYC. But my guess is that Egyptian Musk shifted from Musk From Egypt With Additional Notes, Maybe, to our muskless frankincense-myrrh-patchouli-rose-ambrette sleight of hand today because of that ban, specifically. I don't know if Abdul Kareem was the first or simply the most popular, but that brand seems to have become the standard, the way that Coty's Chypre gave a name to an entire family of bergamot-labdanum-oakmoss fragrances.

Perfumes inspired by Egyptian Musk

And, much the way that Mitsouko was a peach-infused riff on Coty's Chypre, other fragrances have built off Abdul Kareem's Egyptian Musk in particular. Let's go back to that mention of Narciso Rodriguez. Apparently both Narciso Rodriguez For Her (creators: Christine Nagel and Francis Kurkdjian) (yes, that Francis Kurkdijan) and Sarah Jessica Parker's Lovely (Clement Gavarry and Laurent Le Guernec) are inspired by Egyptian Musk. I actually have samples of both of these—the NR For Her is a fresh decant, and the Lovely is, uh, from my random mall sample box. Hope it aged well!

This post is certainly long enough already, so I'll update on those later. But I can say, I've worn the Narciso Rodriguez twice and I do get a similarity.

Paintbrush, PlasGlue, and Holy Clippers: Day 6 & 7: Metallics

I didn't have time to do any painting yesterday but I managed to finish it up today, so all good ^v^

Before starting the metallic highlights I decided to return to the flesh and leather highlights, so I got out the Jokaero orange, did some edge highlighting, then got out the mournfang and started touching up the highlights I'd already done, trying to blend them into the base color a bit.

Now time for the metals! I decided I'd use gehenna for the brass and stormhost silver for the steel. Then, in the middle of doing that, I remembered I needed to highlight the gold accents, too, and got out some auric armor gold :p :p

While highlighting the metals, I decided I wanted to see how it'd look if I used them to put some highlights in the Elves' hair. I did the silver in HB's first, and decided I'd try some brass in Archer's too

I liked it! Here's some more pics after the paint had some time to dry

After looking them over I decided they were a BIT too bright, and put another layer of shade, Fuegan orange for Archer and Nuln oil for HB, on their hair, thinning it down on the wet-palette first

Yus! Now, I was satisfied uwu uwu uwu

So! After waiting 45mins for the shade to dry and then taking those pics, I got out my Stormshield matte varnish and applied the first coat, thinning it on the palette as it was a bit goopy. Im thinking I'll use gloss for the second coat on the hair, at least, just to see how a gloss finish looks; if I REALLY dont like it I can always go over the hair with a THIRD varnish of matte again.

And that's it! Tomorrow I'll do a post on the basing, which I'll be doing separately, and two-ish days after that I'll post some Finished pics and then it's on to my next project!

Auros AU: The Magic System

A lot of lore about this AU has accumulated behind the scenes, and it is time to talk about the Magic System.

This is a shortened/cut down version as it can get complicated, so if you want to know more, I may make another one, but you can also just send me an ask about it or leave a comment.

First, some general terms:

Aurics are the people of the world Auros, just how mobians are of Mobius.

People who can use magic are called Magi, the singular is Magus

Talents are abilities separate from regular magic, they are special powers certain people are born with if born in an area with a lot of magic energy. Example: Silver in this AU has light and darkness magic, but his telekinesis is a talent.

Elemental Magic

Magic is a natural part of Auros, flowing through it like streams. There are 9 main magic types that a person can be born as, their umbrella term being elemental magic:

Fire

Water

Earth

Nature

Wind

Lightning

Ice

Darkness

Light

Usually, aurics are only born with one magic type which is the only elemental one they can naturally use, signified by a magic marking somewhere on their body, usually on the chest over their heart. It can be hidden through clothing as well as things like chest fur, though markings also appearing on said chest fur isn’t impossible. However, rarely 2 or more can happen, either right at birth, or by the magus developing another type somehow later in life.

The markings when magic is not in use are usually faint, sometimes even blending into the fur depending on the colors. They do start glowing when magic is used, or if the magus trains to constantly have them glow passively.

Color variations can also exist, such as light markings being pink or water being red. However, they are also rarer and have no other benefit than looking unique.

Talents do not make them glow.

Elemental magic is often seen as the “base” of the world, as it is what the streams are made of. Thus, being a base, there are also other types, practices and their umbrella terms who sprang from them, for example:

Sigil Magic

Blessings/Curses

Holy Magic

Potion Making

Alchemic Magic/Blood Magic

Demonic Pacts/Rituals

Basics

These listed types are more advanced forms of the basic elemental magic, and thus are far more complicated to master and control. But that doesn’t make elemental magic completely easy. It is easy to learn the basics for, but hard to master.

Elemental magic can be used in 2 ways.

Controlling what already exists (A water magus controlling river water)

Creating something of said type from thin air (A water magus creating water from thin air)

1 is easier than 2, since 2 requires a lot more energy and concentration.

With no energy, no magic can be used, and with no concentration, the magic is unstable and either too dangerous to control, or won’t last long.

Constructs

One of the most powerful spells which exist.

Constructs are beings created by magi from pure magic, in a shape of their choosing, who fight by their side as long as deemed needed, unless the magus’s energy is drained first by keeping them around, or their concentration breaks.

Well-experienced magi can create constructs which can rival a proper sentient being and keep them around for a long time, though in the end, constructs are still temporary nonetheless.

To concentrate magic, some seek enchanted objects, often weapons, to have a physical object to project the magic into, though it is not necessary to practice magic.

While the magic comes from the streams directly and thus can’t be exhausted, the energy used is the physical energy of the body, which is why using magic is draining on a magus. It is exhausting and using it is similar to, for example, doing sports.

The markings indicate what type the magus’s body can process and which stream they can tap into.

If a magus tries pushing past their exhaustion it can result in them falling unconscious at best, at worst they continue using magic and overcharge themself.

A magic overcharge can cause a painful burnout, resulting in wounds and the loss of all their magic abilities, if they don’t die from it. If this happens, the markings they were born with darken and lose their glow.

The loss of magic through an overcharge is irreversible.

Auric Burst

The Auric Burst is an Umbrella term for when an auric defies the limits of their body and instead of an overcharge acquires a new type of form, often boosting their magical abilities. Such forms are unique to every auric who gets them, though some are rather known, like the form the people of Parashia take.

(Basically, the Super Sonic form would count as an Auric Burst)

The more magic a person is exposed to and/or uses, the more their body is affected by it, and can result in the development of new traits. Such traits are typically observed in older magi. For example, an earth magus might develop more rock-like skin, and a fire magi might develop a higher than average body temperature.

These new traits can be as much of a blessing as they can be a curse, and they are stronger the more magic exposure there has been. In extreme cases they have resulted in monstrous mutations which have driven people to insanity, though those require an immensely high amount of exposure and are thus rare.

Residual Magic

When interacting with other people and objects, what is known as residual magic is released, which promptly binds to the interacted object or person, though people rarely if ever notice it happen.

Every magus born with a type naturally has the magic of said type coursing through them, so when living life, just as one leaves behind strands of hair or even just skin cells, they also leave behind a tiny bit of magic.

Usually, said left behind magic simply returns to the streams in Auros, however, if the magus interacted with someone, or something, beforehand, the chance is high at least some of this leftover magic decides to bind itself with said someone/something.

If the residual magic binds with objects, the magic can possibly form into “memories” within said object. For example, a suit of armor constantly worn by a soldier into battle accumulates residual magic over the years. The armor, during this time, forms “memories”: such as how its owner moved and fought, and what damage the armor sustained. If said armor is now animated, it will use these memories for movement, fighting style etc.

Magic Sensitivity

Both magi and non-magi have a certain level of magic sensitivity, though typically, magi have a higher one. Said sensitivity allows an auric to have a closer connection to the magic streams, being able to feel it, see it, smell it etc.

Aurics with high sensitivity take to magic and their practices a lot faster than other people, though a too high one can often lead to it working against the regular senses. For example, the eyes can be affected and while the auric can see magic clearly, their sight is worsened in terms of seeing regular things.

Familiars

Often people like to have an animal companion at their side, and familiars are such companions with an enchanted connection to their owner. Said enchantment can often give the familiar a boost in their natural magical abilities, and allow for example the animal to talk with their magus through a type of telepathy.

Familiars are basically microchipped pets, with which you know where they are, and it tells people this animal is owned by someone already. However, the enchantment is complicated, which is why it is performed by more advanced magi and other people have to pay a high sum to get one.

It is one of the reasons this enchantment is usually reserved for “pets with a purpose”, think seeing eye dogs, or emotional support animals.

However, this is not a hardened rule. Any pet can become a familiar if its owner can make it one and wants to. No animal is off limits, either.

It also doesn’t always have to be a regular animal. At times experienced magi make themselves familiars, either through life mimicking magic, or magitech.

However, this is sometimes frowned upon, because of the implications and techniques needed to mimic or create life.

Magic Hotspots

These so-called hot spots are the areas in the world where the magic gathers the most, basically the lakes where the rivers flow in and out of, and they frequently have one dominant type which flows through them.

Aurics born around such a hot spot are far more likely to be born with said dominant magic type, or magic in general.

Gems

If a hot spot is strong enough, a gem will start to grow there and act as a stabilizer/plug to keep the magic flow stable.

Such gems would be the chaos emeralds, the time stones and the phantom ruby, but because of different cultures they don't all share the same name. These gems should be left in the places they grew in because if removed, the magic there goes haywire and cause massive damage to both the environment and people living there. However, this hasn’t stopped people from taking them anyway, resulting in such catastrophes, and the person either overcharging themself or extremely mutating.

Still, these gems have shown that they can be used as great power sources, or be turned into artifacts, even using their mutating powers for good.

The Master Emerald

Paintbrush, PlasGlue, and Holy Clippers: Sparse Marns Part VI: Layering and Highlighting

Ok so, Once Again, in my haste to Get On With It, I forgot to take pics of how they looked with the rebrightening before I moved on to highlighting -__-

Basically I just went over the models with the same colors I'd already painted them in, and filled in the interiors of each panel, making sure to stay away from the recesses so that I could maintain the darkness I'd built there. On the under-parts of the model I only built that color back up on those sections which would be brightest(judging by... holding them up to the light from my window and seeing where it fell). This took a few hours but it was pretty straight forward: again, as with the touchup step, it was VERY important to be careful and controlled with my brush here to save myself having to do even MORE touchup(spcl since, if I painted any of the recesses, that'd be AT LEAST 45 minutes of no painting before I could fix it).

Once that was done I moved on to highlighting, which is basically just the above step, with brighter versions of each color, and in an even smaller area. My Accomplices:

In a stroke of luck, last week my gamestore started stocking VALLEJO minipaints :D That... probably doesn't mean anything to any of y'all but, while I wouldn't call them "the gold standard", they are Just A Paint Company that does a REALLY Good, Consistent job with their paints, and it was super-convenient for me since it meant I now had a brighter, pure white to highlight my paint-scheme with! So: I used the vallejo white for the white, the vallejo flat yellow for the yellow and dorn yellow for edge highlighting, the mournfang brown for the brown with Jokaero orange for edgehighlighting, the stormvermin grey for the grey, the gehenna gold for the bronze, and the auric armor for the gold! Oh! And I then I remembered I'd need a highlight for the oranges so

Trollslayer in the middle in the orange I've been using, and I went out and bout Firedragon for the main highlight, and Lugganath for the Edge ^v^ ^v^

The point of highlighting is the help trick the eye by increasing contrasts and emphasizing the parts of the model where light catches the most to make it catch even more! I used three different highlighting techniques to do this. First, I painted the most light-facing areas with the highlight colors, blending it via less and less paint into the base layer as I moved into the dark areas(and a few times, mostly if I ever put TOO much of the highlight anywhere, some on-model mixing with the base layer). Second, I edge-highlighted; meaning I would trace the point or side of the brush JUST across relevant edges of the model, or mark said edges with tiny scritches of paint where tracing wasn't viable. Third, I drybrush, which is where you take either a brush you dont care about or a poofy brush(makeup brushes are perfect for this), dip the tip of it DRY in the paint, dab MOST of the paint off on a paper towel, and then just dust what's left over the mini to JUST brighten up the highest parts(and create a nice speckled light looking effect).

You don't need to do all of this! In fact, Highlight-blending and edgehighlighting are pretty tricky techniques each in their own way, and edging in particular needs a very steady brush, but the point of this whole thing was building skills so I decided to Try Everything >:3 >:3 >:3 A nice drybrush will be perfectly fine in most situations, and far kinder to your nerves, or you can just... Not highlight at all! Not highlighting is fine u_u Here are the brushes I used:

Anyway: once that was all done the Lads looked thus

You might also notice a their eyes painted in the highlight white: that's prep for applying citadel's waystone green gemstone technical paint to them later. Later being now. Here's how that looks when dry.

Bscl: the gemstone technicals are VERY Thick glazes that love to pool in recesses but thin out evenly from the top of where you lay them, so when you paint them over a bright color,you get a nice and even gradient of translucency with the very tippy-top shining through most brightly, creating a glassy effect! It's so Neat :> :> (and SO MUCH LESS Work that creating the same effect with, like, 4 seperate, increasingly thinner complimentary layers -_-)
