and the worst thing is that vergil DOES sucks. genuinely
#BUT its in the same that dante sucks. that nero sucks. that dmc as a whole is kinda cringe#but it is also extremely genuine. which cancels the cringe factor entirely.#as STUPID as the characters are theyre ALWAYS treated with respect in the story's theyre in. or if they arent its not at their expense#its cool. its just cool. as its core dmc is cool even if its inherently so fucking stupid#anyway this has been my ''you have to ENGAGE with the story. YES the character's actions are stupid NO theyre NOT a loser.''#as for vergil: hes never been a master planner nor a mastermind. hes just reserved in his words and (shut up) self-motivated#vergil doesnt want to change the world or society. he *doesnt fucking care*. he just wants power for deeply personal reasons#HES ALSO BEEN SHOWN TO BE WRONG IN THE TWO (2) GAMES HES BEEN IN. BC DANTE WON. AND LATER NERO#also hes wrong but NOT a villain. hes legit just dante under different circumstances and with different tastes. THEY ADRESSED THIS IN DMC5#''but dam he needs to atone for the two cities'' nobody cares about the humans in dmc. theyre plot points#theyre not cool enough to be focused on on their own. if they do they need to be as off the balls bonker as the half demons#as far as dmc is concerned. vergil's only crime is being wrong.#and hes so fucking strong. hes sooo strong. hes good looking. he has a well written story and character arc imo. hes extremely iconic#and I love him very much. anyway this has been dam ''vergil is my favorite character of all time'' scalproie thank you all#im gonna go listen to bury the light#tagging later

Fathers Do Cry (DMC Vergil one shot)
Summary: Vergil remembers his last Father's Day with Sparda and doesn't really realise how similar to him he has become.
Tags: Father's Day special / DADGIL! / Vergil acting like a dad to Nero
Author’s note: I woke up this morning suddenly inspired. Doesn't happen very often so enjoy ;) ps: I just love Dadgil!
***
His big blue eyes staring without blinking, the child was observing his father sitting by the fireplace in the parlour. Full of admiration, he was detailing all the features of his serious face, all the details of his confident posture and all the different luxurious fabrics that made his purple finery and as he did, he repeated to himself, wished, prayed, that someday, one day, he would grow up to be just like him.          “Aren’t you going to speak, Vergil?” The father’s powerful voice asked as he finally acknowledged the boy’s presence with a small amused smile, wondering what brilliant thoughts were occupying his eldest son’s sharp mind this time.            “I made this for you, father.” With a solemnity that didn’t suit a five-years-old but that somehow fitted Vergil’s young yet wise spirit and his will to be perfect son in the eyes of Sparda, the boy handed a paper sheet to his father.         “ And what would that be?” The man said as he took his son’s gift. “It’s father’s day so … I made you a poem… or tried to.” The adorable embarrassment tensing the child’s traits in funny grimaces made the father's smile wider but Vergil, suddenly too preoccupied with the blue paint stuck under his fingernails, didn’t notice it as he didn’t notice the paternal pride and the love shining in his eyes.               “I thought your mother wanted you and your brother to make a gift together this year.” “ You know Dante” Vergil sighed. “He has no artistic talent whatsoever. He wanted to make you a wooden sword to play with us.”    “ That’s actually a very good idea.”  Vergil frowned; suddenly worried that Sparda would not like his gift and preferred Dante’s – if he had made one of course. “Except when the sword looks like two twigs glued together. You should have seen this, father. It looked ri.di.cu.lous.” Sparda laughed at his son’s attitude, finding amusement in this sibling rivalry. “Why don’t you read me your poem then?”              “ I learnt it by heart actually. The paper is for you to remember this day by … and also because I wanted to illustrate it. Look.” Vergil approached his father, seized the poem from his big hands and climbed on his lap to show him the delicate aquarelle he had painted around the lines. “Impressive. Did your mother help you with this?” Vergil shook his head. “No, I did it on my own. I used a book I saw in that old man’s house I often go to as a reference.”       “ The old academic that lives down the hill? I thought you found him boring.” Vergil shook his head again, furiously this time and with a serious frown. “That’s Dante. Me, I really like him. He teaches me a lot of things. And he has lots of books. It’s incredible.”
Sparda ruffled his son’s silver hair whose hairdo was always made in order to somehow mimic his, thinking what a promising young boy Vergil was. Maybe more promising than Dante to be honest – though he knew he shouldn’t think that.   But there was something that Vergil had that Dante lacked. Perhaps rationality beyond his age … or some kind of maturity … wisdom maybe? He couldn’t really pinpoint what it was exactly. All he knew is that it was something unique and special, just like his son, something that made Sparda certain that one day his eldest would grow up to be a great man, a man greater than him, a man worthy of the Yamato and capable of handling its burdening power.
“Can I recite my poem now?” Sparda smiled at the sparkle in Vergil’s eyes. “Sure.” The boy quickly took back his previous position in front his father, cleared his throat, put his hands behind his back and stuck out his chest.
Sparda listened to every word, fascinated and amazed by his little one’s talent and profoundly moved by all the love, all the meticulousness and the time he put in each line and in each word. “Oh Vergil. The world is not yet ready for someone like you.” The father said as he let a tear roll down his cheek. “Why are you crying, father?” Vergil worried. “Because fathers cry, my son.”
That day was the last time Vergil truly celebrated Father’s day for a few weeks later he had no father, no one to make poems to, no one to admire by the fireplace. Just a memory that he feared would sooner or later fade but that he would cling to dearly for as long as he could.
“Why don’t we bring flowers to Daddy’s statue in the park today?” Eva asked when Vergil was six, when Vergil was seven, when Vergil was eight only to be welcome by a heavy silence that was no longer hiding brilliant thoughts but a painful sadness. But each time he did as Eva suggested, maybe more for her than for him, maybe because he still loved and admired Sparda even if he had left him, maybe because he thought that his father might see him and smile from wherever he was now, the same way he had smiled when he had read him his poem on his last father’s day.
And that’s certainly why, more than three decades later, he was back in this park, on this very special day with a bouquet of purple peonies he had bought on his way here and a memory that never faded. A memory he could still recite.
"Whether the sun shines or the sky cries,                 Whether the day breaks or the night wakes,       My father always as a rampart stands Protecting my house with his bare hands.
He is strong, he is brave                 And the day he always saves.     A knight in cockroach armor     To scare my terror away."
Vergil scoffed at the lines, at the way they rolled off his tongue, finding them funny and childish and not worthy of a Blake or a Fielding at all unlike what he thought when he wrote them as a child. The over-confidence of youth probably.
“Did you just come up with that?” Vergil turned around to see Nero walking towards him with a smirk. A surprise but not a bad one. “Cause the rhyming sucks a little. I expected more of you.”                “ And I suppose you’re an expert in poetry now?”         “ I may read have read one of your books.” He said as he tapped the pocket of his marine blue coat hiding Vergil's most sacred book with pride. “You still have it I see.”     “Hey! It’s a real page turner! Can’t get my nose out of it.” Vergil had a crooked smile, understanding perfectly what his son meant.
Son? Even a year after this reveal he still couldn’t believe this boy before him, the one he had lived such a terrifying yet incredible adventure with, was his own flesh and blood.
A sigh almost escaped Vergil’s lips. How did he make such a fine young man? Someone so selfless, so generous, so loving when he was nothing like that.              “ What are you doing here, Nero?” He asked, trying not to think more about this.      “ Well it’s father’s day, no? So … I made you something… or tried to.” The embarrassed grimace Nero suddenly made made Vergil’s smile grew larger but Nero, too worried to keep the gift covered with the pieces of newspapers he had taped together, didn’t see it as he didn’t see the paternal pride and the love shining in his father’s blue eyes. The same paternal pride Sparda had displayed when Vergil was a little child with a small paper in his hands.  “Thank you Nero.” The man said as he gently took the present from his son's hands, wondering what it was even though the long shape didn’t leave much place for imagination.
He cautiously unwrapped the thing, already feeling a happiness he hadn’t felt in years warming his heart. And when he saw a katana-like wooden sword that purposely looked like Yamato he couldn’t help but smile and let a tiny drop of water blur his blue eyes. “It was Dante’s idea. Though he might have suggested gluing two sticks together.” Nero said as he scratched his head. “It looks amazing.” Vergil’s honesty was like a knife in Nero’s chest but in a good way. It was as if all the stress and all the stupid fear he had felt while making this toy sword had been stabbed away. He felt relieved, joyful even that his always so stern father was genuinely grateful and seemed to appreciate his gift. “That way, you won’t have to tear my arm apart again cause look, you have two now.” Nero tried to joke but his words just erased the smile on Vergil’s face.
“There is not a single day I don't regret what I did to you.” This was Vergil’s way to say he was sorry. Nero was certain of it. He didn’t need to know his father that well to know it. After all, he was somewhat the same. “Hey, it’s in the past. Plus it grew back, so no harm done.” He winked, trying to ease the atmosphere with a bad pun worthy of Dante even though there was a time he would have ripped Vergil’s chest open for what he had done. And a part of him knew he would never forget and maybe never fully forgive what happened.               But right now he was just happy to have a family, to have a father and to finally be able to celebrate a day he has so long hated.  “ This world doesn’t deserve you, son.” Vergil solemnly declared. He had never called Nero that way and that name felt strange yet beautiful to both of them. It made the son and the father smile in ways they never thought they would smile at each other. “ Damn, are you crying old man? I thought devils never cry.” Nero suddenly harrumphed when he finally noticed the water growing in his father's eyes.                   “ Well, fathers do cry." Vergil declared as he allowed a tear of joy and pride to fall along his pale cheek. The first in a very very long time but one he will never regret or brush away. "Father do cry.” He repeated with a glance at the statue of his father behind him.

DMC Gang Teaching their s/o how to drive
Dante
Uh, yeah he knows how to drive
But... he's not the best teacher
Usually ends up asleep in the back
Cause he trusts you to figure it out
One day though, damn near changed his life
You smashed into a newspaper stand
The impact woke him from his nap
You were holding on to the steering wheel for dear life
Tears welled up in your eyes and he immediately pulled you into his lap
Kicking the door open, hauling both of you out of Morrison's now wrecked car
Dante was more concerned about you
You still hadn't said anything, just letting tears fall down your face
He checked you over, he was silent as well
Pissed at himself for letting his negligence, almost get you killed
The cops showed up, after a kind soul called them
An ambulance got to the scene and checked the pair of you over
While the paramedics looked you over, Dante called Vergil and Nero
The pair made it to the scene in Nico's van
But it wasn't just the two of them, the whole crew came
Kyrie and Lady rushed to your side, Lady shoving the paramedics and cops away from you
Kyrie got you talking, letting you weep onto her shoulder
Dante got a scolding from Vergil and Trish
Something along the lines of, "How could you be so wreckless." And "You knew that was dangerous, Dante."
He wasn't listening tho, he watched you cry into Kyrie's arms, while Lady rubbed your back comfortingly
Once the scene cleared out, it was just you and the crew
Oh! And a confused and angry Morrison
"How the hell.... Dante, you know your paying for this."
Your half-devil finally made his way to you, for once (and during this whole thing) speechless
His head hung, he didn't need Vergil, Trish or Lady to scold him
He was beating himself up over this
You looked up from Kyrie and Lady, throwing yourself into his arms
Crying out "I'm sorry's" and "I should have been more careful's"
He shushed you, burying his face in your shoulder, "Im sorry. I should have been paying more attention."
He silently cried into your neck
After that day, Dante took more care in paying more attention to your driving
Once you got your license though, he still took naps
Or so you thought
The devil man would only be resting
Peeking at you every so often
Vergil
You stood awkwardly in the archway of your shared bedroom
Vergil giving you a (visibly) shocked look
You wanted him to what?
"Verg? Did you hear me?" You shuffled your feet abit, again
He blinked at you
Dumbfounded, flabbergasted, and down right appalled
"You.. You want me to..."
You looked away, abit ashamed
But to your defense, you could and had always walked everywhere in Red Grave
You really didn't need to drive, unless you went to the beach or somewhere out of town
But.... Vergil didn't know how to drive either, he had spent the last 20 something years in hell
And the last thing he thought he would ever be asked to do or teach was FUCKING DRIVE
He shook his head, not saying anything to you
You bit your lip and looked away from him
You misunderstood his head shaking
Then his face flushed, letting out a grumble
"I dont know how to drive."
And in his defense, he just teleports or opens a portal to where he wants to go
You straightened up, "Wh-what?"
Great, you were back at square one
Vergil gave a small cough, "Why do you need to learn how to drive?"
You looked at your feet, "I just wanted to learn..."
In all honesty, Nero had teased you about being an adult, and not knowing how to drive
It made you feel low
Vergil gave a huff, noticing your hesitation
"Who." He stood up
You looked at him, "Ver-"
"Was it Dante? No... he barely knows how to drive..." his eyes flashed
You grabbed his arm, but it didn't stop him
He slashed open a portal, right into the shop
"Who teased (him/her)." It wasn't a question, a demand for the person who insulted his sweetheart
"Vergil. Please stop..."
Everyone in the shop looked at Nero, who had his headphones in
Vergil let out a growl and pushed you behind him
"Teach them how to drive!" He snarled, slicing the headphones off of his son's head
Nero shot up and got ready to fight back, but stopped when he realized what was happening
"Uh... sure... i-"
"Both of us."
Dante burst onto laughter, realizing what Vergil was getting at
Nero looked at Nico, "uh... can we-"
"Oh hell nah!"
At a loss Nero looked at you and his dad
"Well.... uh... i-"
Vergil scoffed, throwing a few summoned swords at his cackling brother
Then he pulled you close, "Tease them about not knowing how to drive again, and you'll feel my wrath."
He took you back home
After setting you on your feet and giving you a kiss on the forehead, he returned to his reading
"So..."
"You have me. No need to drive."
And that was the end of that
Nero
Nero sat in the van in the driver's seat
You in his lap
You insisted that he sit in the passenger seat
But the part-devil placed you in his lap
Now he was scratching his head
"Nero?" You looked at him with big puppy dog eyes
He looked down at you, "Yeah?"
"Do you know what your do-"
Nero waved his gauntlet clad hand
"Of course, I got this."
He, poorly, started to explain the gears, buttons and switches in front of you
"Aight. So. You got the gear shift, I think it's a stick. And the... uh... windshield wipers. And the lights in front, and the brights..."
'Oof,' you thought, 'I could have just asked Dante... and got just about the same experience.'
You drummed your fingertips on the steering wheel
Finally, tired of your boyfriend droning on, you turned the key and started the van
Nero jumped, then patted you on the head, pointing at the 3 pedals at your guys feet
"Well since your in my lap, I'll work the pedals. Just tell me when to speed up and slow down. Ok?"
You nodded, "Alright! Nice and slow though."
From here, using team work, you and Nero made your way around the block
Slow and steady
Then Nero hit the breaks a bit too hard
You nailing your forehead on the steering wheel
"Shit! Nero!" You leaned back rubbing your sore head
"S-sorry! There was a old lady crossing the street..." he mumbled
Then leaned forward a bit, examining your forehead
He sucked his teeth, "Shiiiiit. That looks bad babe...."
"No shit." You barked
You felt your boyfriend flinch at your tone
After the pain passed you patted him on the arm, that was wrapped around you
"Its ok. Good thing you stopped though." You pointed at the old lady still trying to cross the street
Nero nodded, grunting with agreement
"I... I think thats enough driving for the day."
Nero gave another nod, letting you crawl into the passenger seat
He made way back to the garage/shop
Once parked he looked at you
And you gave him a smile
"Thanks. That was pretty fun!"
Nero gave a small laugh, "I suppose it was, save for you bashing your skull on the wheel."
You huffed, poking out your lip, "Not entirely my fault."
V
(Yes, I include him, cause some people like him. And personally I like his character as well)
You and V were cuddling in the living room of your apartment
You leaned into his chest, watching tv, as he read from his book and gently running a hand through your hair
"V." You spoke lifting your head
He gave an acknowledging hum, looking to you from his book
"Can you teach me how to drive?"
He looked at you, his mind drawing a blank
As Vergil, he never drove, hell they barely walked
"Love, I've never driven.... Ever." He told you gently
You looked forward at his chest, searching your mind, trying to figure out who you could ask to teach you how to drive
V cocked his head at you, wondering what was going through your mind
You looked up, eyes shining, "we could learn together! There's plenty of books on driving!"
V's eyes lit up as well, your excitement fueling his
"Oh? Where to we begin then?"
You both sat up, you grabbing your phone and V sitting up with you
"Well the DMV would be a good start. They can give us all the info to study."
"There's a written test?" V asked, he knew he could pass that
You nodded, not looking up from your phone"Yes. And there is a driving segment as well."
V froze and looked down at you, but seeing you so excited, he didn't want to ruin your fun
Later you both got everything from the DMV
And at V's insistence, the library as well
You both spent weeks reading and learning
Even convincing Nico to let you practice and take the driving part of the test, using her van
Eventually when it was time for the tests, you both where prepared
You passed them with flying colors
Ignoring the dangerous tips Nico gave you
When it was V's turn, he passed the written exam
But hesitated when it was time to get into the van
He stood at the driver's door, hand on it
You walked to his side, gently putting your hand in his
"V? You can do it. Just don't think too hard about it."
He looked at you to speak, but you cut him off, sealing his lips with a kiss
Happy, he climbed in
You sat alone in the DMV, anxious
He came back with the instructor minutes later, beaming proudly
"You were correct, my dear. I didn't overthink."
He pulled you into a hug, after you both got your licenses

DMC OC Week Day 2
Yeah I know I'm late shut up
Day 2 stuff that I posted on Twitter this morning and am posting here now. Here's how Sera gets along with (most of) the DMC crew. Relationships are in the order she met them.
Nero
Nero was the first person Sera met in Fortuna after she was…dropped off. They inherently “understood” each other from the start and she looked up to him the same way he looked up to Credo. She joined the Holy Knights alongside him, albeit for different reasons. Despite being younger than him, she acts more mature, but she was also the de facto babysitter for all the younger kids at the orphanage where they grew up, so that’s why.
Kyrie
Sera knew of Kyrie, but really got to know her after her family adopted Nero. She always appreciated Kyrie for being kind and always making sure to include her in things. The time they spent together decreased a bit when Kyrie became a songstress for the Order, but in the end Sera cared for her too much to cut contact like she wanted too. She won't sing with her, but she'll play accompaniment any time.
Credo
Credo was Sera's commanding officer and was strict and firm (and overprotective). The two would butt heads sometimes when the other officers would assign Sera some of the more dangerous patrol routes and he wouldn't let her go. However, once she realized that it was his way of looking out for her, she would relent. Mostly, Sera would seek his advice on how to be a good knight and still asks herself "what would Credo do" in most situations. She was devastated when he died and restarted the Order some time after its fall in his memory, this time as an organization dedicated to the protection of Fortuna rather than worshipping Sparda. Initially, she tried to get Nero to lead it because she knew how close the two were, but he opted not to. In the end, Sera took over the position of Supreme General at the behest of Kyrie, Nero, and the other knights.
Dante
The first time Sera encountered Dante was when he came to Fortuna to stop Sanctus. She didn’t get to see him, but every instinct in her was screaming “danger, danger, stay away”, so she did. When they properly met later, she was too afraid to go near him and the look he gave her wasn’t exactly friendly, so she continued to keep her distance. Time has soothed both their instincts and by the time of DMC5, they get along well enough to work together.
Trish
Sera was more curious about Trish/Gloria when they first met because she gave off the same vibes as the assaults and frosts, but she had a human shape and wasn’t hostile. (She hadn't encountered a demon with a human form before this).Trish however knew exactly who/what Sera was the second they met and decided to keep it to herself. Post-DMC4, Trish takes it upon herself to become the big sister that Sera didn't ask for to get her to loosen up. Sera herself isn't sure how to feel about their current relationship now because Sera is dutiful and conservative and Trish is...not...that.
Lady
Sera’s first thought upon meeting Lady was “do not fuck with this woman” and she was right. Their combat approaches work together the best and they’re often the ones to clear hordes when on jobs. Sera favors death from above, so she's good at staying out of her way. Outside of combat, Lady tends to help Trish tease Sera to get her to loosen up, but the woman is also there to lend an ear on days where Sera’s a little too in her own head. They essentially bond over "our dads suck, but we won't let them define us".
Nico
Sera and Nico are polar opposites which results in the two of them bickering more often than not. Nonetheless, Sera respects her intellect and mechanical ability, especially when she’s using it to help the knights and upgrade Fortuna's defenses. The two can spend hours going over old Order research and experimenting with Sera’s abilities. At some point, Sera started bringing back materials for Nico out of habit and had the knights do the same, so now she doesn’t have to pay for Nico’s services. She is occasionally smug about it.
Vergil
She currently reacts to Vergil the same way she initially reacted to Dante, which isn’t great and it takes everything in her to not vacate the premises when the two of them are together. But that's only sometimes. On days she’s feeling brave, she has to keep herself from arguing with him on Nero’s behalf whenever Vergil does something to upset him. Nero doesn’t want to upset/drive away the few blood relations he has and will uncharacteristically downplay conflict. (Un)fortunately, Sera has her own familial issues and a tendency to project, so she will gladly stand up for her friend when he refuses to fight himself. For his part, Vergil is patient with her and understands where she's coming from, so he lets her go off.
Mundus
He is the devil. We do not speak the name of the devil. If you value your life, D̷̳̲͆Ọ̶̃̆ ̴̢̩̃̏N̶͍̜͝O̴̼̭͘T̴̩̜̀ ̶̜̹̆̄S̶͙̍P̷̳͎͗E̶̖̝̓̇A̷͍̥͊͒Ķ̴͈̔͗ ̶͈̘́T̸͕̫̀H̶̯̑͝Ȅ̴̠̖ ̷̗͗N̶͍͠Á̴̘̲M̴͕̖̓͝E̸̊͜ ̶̟̈Ö̴̧F̸͖̎ ̴̜̓T̷̹͍̓H̵̘͛͆Ě̵̜ ̸̪͚͛͝D̷̫͕̒E̴̟͚̽V̶̫̠̋̃Ȋ̸̢̺͝Ļ̶̈́̎!̸̣̅

My Devil May Cry Game Ratings
Alright so I finally finished playing all the Devil May Cry games (barring DMC2 and DmC), so I wanted to write out my thoughts and reviews of the games in order of my favorite to least favorite. I played the games in the order of 5, 4, 3, then 1.
#1: Devil May Cry 5
Tumblr media
DMC5 was my introduction to the series. I first watched a whole play-through of the game as background while I was working on a research project, but it looked so fun that I bought it on the steam summer sale and I loved it as much as I thought I would. The combat is intricate and fun, and I’m still discovering new tricks and play-styles (I think I’m on my third play-through of the game??). I love V’s character, but on my first play-through I didn’t know the story of the DMC universe, so I was disappointed when he turned back into Vergil. Now that I’ve played through all the games though, I love the story even more and I understand now how V is an important step in Vergil coming to terms with his humanity (also I love Vergil too now). Having played the other games too I can now see all the references this game makes to the previous games as well which is really cool.
Overall 10/10 this is my new favorite game and has beat out Bayonetta as being my favorite game of all time.
#2: Devil May Cry 4
Tumblr media
As previously stated, I’m a huge Bayonetta fan, so you can imagine my excitement at all the parallels between this game and Bayonetta (aesethically, story-wise, etc.). However, DMC4 is definitely not a finished game, so I’m actually glad that Bayonetta basically stole the concepts of DMC4 and made them better.
The start of this game is my favorite out of all the DMC games. I love the scene of Kyrie’s performance in the church while Nero battles demons in the street, and I think this does a really good job of setting the scene for the game. Fortuna is aesthetically beautiful, and the game’s music is fantastic (I’ve had “Out of Darkness”, “The Idol of Time and Space”, and “Shall Never Surrender” on repeat for the past few weeks). Having finished DMC1, I can see now too that Fortuna, Fortuna castle, and the enemies take a lot of inspiration from Mallet Island in DMC1.
Combat wise, I loved playing as both Nero and Dante. After playing DMC5, Nero’s combat felt a bit lacking, but nevertheless I had fun smacking demons around with the buster arm. I adored playing as Dante, and I enjoyed his combat style more than Nero’s. HOWEVER, this brings me to the game’s biggest flaw: while Dante is super fun to play as, his levels are absolutely awful. Instead of creating a new area for Dante to explore while trying to save Nero, the entire 2nd half of the game is spent backtracking through all of the Nero levels. Like seriously Capcom?? I was aware of the backtracking before playing this game but having basically half of the game backtrack through the first half is ridiculous. The areas themselves also felt disconnected. Fortuna, Fortuna Castle, and the jungle all were interesting areas on their own, but it doesn’t make sense going basically from Italy, to a frozen mountaintop, to a jungle, all on a single island.
All in all though, I’d give this game a 7.5/10. While repeated sections were annoying, the combat was fun and I love the aesthetic of the game and its soundtrack. Also Nero and Kyrie’s relationship is adorable.
#3: Devil May Cry 1
Tumblr media
This might come as a surprise, but I enjoyed DMC1 more than DMC3 (but I’ll get to this more in the next section).
First, I’m glad I played all the DMC games in reverse order. When I first picked up DMC1 after completing DMC5, I was shocked with how awful the camera system and general gameplay was, so I put down DMC1 to replay DMC5. However, when I came back to DMC1 after playing all the other games, I had become adjusted to the lack of features in each game, so I no longer felt as annoyed with the camera and gameplay. In fact, I enjoyed the gameplay a lot more than I thought I would. I imagined that the game wouldn’t live up to today’s gaming standards, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the combat. I missed having access to the different playstyles of future games, but this Dante’s gameplay almost felt like a mix between trickster and gunslinger, so his combat style was not as empty as I thought it would be.
Much like DMC4, I also really enjoyed the aesthetic of this game. Having played DMC4 before DMC1, I almost had “reverse nostalgia” for the scarecrow enemies and the castle aesthetic. I also really liked the level designs. While the levels in DMC4 felt disconnected, I could see the areas (castle, canyon, coliseum, pirate ship, etc.) all existing on one island together. In terms of bosses, I wish that there had not been repeat fights. While I loved seeing V’s familiars having a role in this game (again, “reverse nostalgia”), I could’ve done with a couple less Nightmare and Nelo Angelo fights.
In the end, my biggest complaint about this game is that it’s too short. I started this game at 5pm yesterday, and I’ve completed it in under 5 hours. While the game is short, it felt like there was almost no plot until the very end of the game when you fight Nelo Angelo Vergil. I wish they would’ve expanded upon the story and included more information on Sparda and Eva and Dante and Vergil’s childhoods, but I understand that this game was the first in the series and made in 2001.
Overall, I’ll give the game a 7/10. While I can’t imagine myself replaying this game (especially since there’s no other playable characters besides Dante), I had an overall pleasant time playing this game.
#4: Devil May Cry 3
Tumblr media
First, while DMC3 is the last game on this list, I want to clarify that I enjoyed all 4 games, and this game is almost tied with DMC1. However, there are just some choices in the game that made this game a less enjoyable experience for me.
Combat wise, while it took me some time to adjust to only having one style at once, DMC3 has my favorite weapon set out of all the games. I loved played with Cerberus in DMC5, so I was excited to have the opportunity to use this weapon again in DMC3, and the same goes for Beowulf and Kalina Ann. While I didn’t use it that much, I also adored the Nevan weapon, and it seems like a perfect weapon addition to the game series (if only we could’ve seen something similar in DMC5!). I also enjoyed the story of this game. It was nice getting more of a backstory on Dante and Vergil, and Dante definitely grew as a character by the end of the game. It was also nice finally seeing Lady’s backstory. Arkham/Jester annoyed me, and one of my favorite parts of the game is when Vergil basically goes from “I need to begin the all important ritual” to “Okay we need to get rid of this clown ASAP”.
But, what this game makes up for in storytelling, it lacks in general gameplay and aesthetic. The game’s aesthetics almost felt bland, and many areas in Temen-ni-gru were just brown/grey stone. I also wish the early enemy design went outside of the “grim reaper” aesthetic. While I know others have different opinions on the matter, I feel that DMC3′s aesthetic was very one note, and suffers from the opposite problem of DMC4. In terms of gameplay, I felt that most of the item quests did not make sense and were unnecessary. For example, many of the doors require orichalcum to open, but randomly finding a piece of orichalcum on the ground doesn’t make sense story wise. I remember a level specifically where you have to drop down to the library to find a key item, but the library is even before the start of the level.
Compared to this, the item quests and backtracking in DMC1 made sense. For example, finding a key in a room in a castle to use on another door in a castle makes sense. Even weirder item quests, such as finding the trident to open the door, make more sense than DMC3 missions. While I do not know what orichalcum does or what it is, in one of the rooms in DMC1 there is an item with 3 holes in it, and it makes sense that the trident item gained later on would go in this space.
Finally, one of my biggest complaints about this game is the boss battles. Now I might just suck at video games, but it took me way too long to defeat some of the bosses on Devil Hunter. For example, it took me longer to figure out the Vergil fights than it did for me to complete DMC1. Bosses like Beowulf also sucked due to relying on the smaller eye hitbox. In contrast to DMC1 as well, these bosses were at the end of a level, as compared to being a separate mission, so if I wanted to leave and come back later, I’d have to replay the entire mission first.
Overall, I’ll give the game 6/10. Will I replay it? Possibly, I know I can play as Vergil, so it would be fun learning his moveset. However, a game’s aesthetic is almost more important to me than gameplay (that’s just a me thing), so I’m not sure that I would enjoy playing through the levels again due to their lackluster design.
Ending Thoughts
And that’s my rating on (almost) all the DMC games! While some of the gameplay in the earlier games was annoying, I definitely love this series, and I plan on reading the extra novels/mangas outside the game (I’ve already watched the anime). Hell, I’ll probably read some William Blake and the Divine Comedy itself.
Let me know what your ratings are! I’d love to hear everyone else’s lists.

DMC Week 2020: Day 6: You Belong Here
(Here’s another small wholesome piece. I really wish we had more interactions with the entire crew in DMC, but the community provides enough to sate that need for wholesomeness). (All prompts were used for day 6). (Alcohol mention, and one use of a curse word lmao).
Family was never a word that Dante had to use too often in his vocabulary. Decades of separation and neglect seemed to stretch, until he finally found where he belonged; in this drunken celebration with his slightly dysfunctional family.
Word Count: 1,755
Characters: Dante, Vergil, Nero, Kyrie, Trish, Lady, Nico
Read On AO3
The scorching July sun seemed to boil every living being which dared step foot outside, merciless rays beating down upon the Earth. Whoever escaped the confines of their four walls were bound to become crispy at the sheer thought of the sun. There were, however, some fools who tempted fate, and proceeded to have an entire barbeque outside.
The Spardas, alongside the Devil May Cry crew, were said fools.
Of course, no one could deny Kyrie, the kindest, most gentle creature to ever grace the planet, a day outside. Especially during a celebration. Especially on a pregnant Kyrie’s birthday.
It was July tenth, the weather being arid and overly vacant of any breezes. This only made the heat far more excruciating. Kyrie didn’t seem to feel the blazes, her skin absorbing the rays to form a honeyed tan which complimented the amber glimmer in her eyes. Whereas Nero, unfortunately, panted like a rabid dog. His skin seemed to turn scarlet at the mere thought of summer. Evidently, the situation turned even worse for the boy since he had to man the barbeque, grilling burgers, as well as sausages, meanwhile being inevitably covered in helix coils of smoke. His beloved watched him apologetically, whilst he continued to sweat up a storm, beckoning the children to pick up their mouthwatering meals.
Dante sat beside an orchard, the apple trees being a godsend for shade in his time of need. Although the Sparda twin could withstand blazing temperatures, it was only for a short period of time; Not an entire day. Brushing his white, sweat-soaked locks away from his brow, Dante grabbed the neck of the beer bottle, letting the bubbles gently glide down his throat. He basked in the sensation for what seemed a whole eternity, whilst the sound of bickering and giggling children filled his ears. It was blissful, to say the least. To feel like he belonged. To have family.
He had hoped Verge felt the same about this reunion.
Thinking about his twin brother, Dante turned to the blue devil, noting that Vergil’s usual scowl was wiped clean off of his visage. Instead, his face was soft, bereft of any tension. He seemed… happy. Relaxed. It was refreshing to see. Albeit his quiet nature, the elder twin continued to lift the corners of his lips, reacting to the children, as well as Nico’s vulgar comments and Kyrie’s deathly glares at the gunsmith. Trish and Lady were the other pair to cause a ruckus, making Vergil smirk anytime they were told off by Nero for using non-family friendly language at the dinner table.
“Aww shit, we’re out of ketchup.” As a slightly intoxicated Lady let the curse word slip, she squeezed the condiment bottle harder, making it spurt out a less-than elegant bowel movement noise, and a pathetic dollop of tomato sauce. The children fell into hysterics, Nero and Kyrie unsure of whether to reprimand the woman, or giggle alongside the kids.
Dante continued to watch the spectacle, a warmth blooming in his chest.
Vergil was happy. In turn, so was his younger brother.
“So, Verge, enjoying yourself?” Sipping on liquid courage, Dante turned his head to his twin.
“Hmm. It appears as though I am.” The blue devil assumed a somewhat distant stare, turning his gaze towards his busy son at the grill. His eyes softened at the sight of Nero. If there was a trace of bittersweetness in Vergil’s expression, it came and went almost instantly. However, Dante knew him better than anyone, and could recognise his elder brother’s ghosts of guilt and regret quickly.
As a sudden breeze eased the tension of blanketing heat, Dante sighed, and recalled a nostalgia fueled memory.
“Remember when mum and dad brought all of their friends to the manor for a barbeque? We ended up playing with the other kids, whilst the grown-ups got drunk?” The scarlet devil sucked air in through his teeth, the memory almost too painful to relive. Vergil recoiled at the sudden recollection.
“I reminisce about those days often.”
“You were a damn sprightly kid, Verge. Always running off and hiding to read. Me and the others had to search for you, only to find you up on that gnarly tree, chomping on some apple.”
Dante continued with the mental memoir, his lips curling upwards. He could almost hear the voices of the children and Vergil’s adamant refusal to climb down. He could smell the delectable cuisine of his father's famous burnt burgers and his mother’s soft laughter. Even the gentle grass lapping at his ankles was as vivid of a memory as the display of giggling children before him.
“And now…” Dante inhaled deeply, a ghost of a bittersweet smile gracing his lips, “now we’re the ones sitting, getting wasted, whilst the kiddos play.”
“What are you getting at, Dante?” Vergil uncrossed his arms, running his fingers through his hair, a tell-tale sign of either annoyance or discomfort. Dante simply waited to collect his thoughts, the image of past times being too much. In retaliation to the thoughts, he inhaled the scent of sweetened smoke, inching himself to the empty seat beside Vergil. He let out an almost elderly sigh as he landed in the chair before continuing earnestly.
“We made it, Verge. We've come full circle.”
Vergil's reforming thoughtful brow wrinkle made its famous comeback, his mind processing Dante's statement.
So they did come full circle.
Dante was so adamant on having something dear to hold onto, he was finally rewarded with a family. Finally rewarded with what he longed for since he was eight years old. Though it was a screwed up little group with issues that would take a few more decades to sort out, it was his family. Vergil was very much a part of that family. It warmed every cold crevice of the blue devil’s beating heart, the melodic rhythm becoming even prouder.
"Christ, Vergil. You have a son, can you believe it? In fact, you're going to have a grandkid. You're going to be the youngest looking gramps to have ever lived." Dante attempted to pinch his brother’s cheek, earning him an irked scoff, alongside a hearty slap to the back of the head. It seemed as though they returned to their youthful selves, ignoring the wrinkle lines that arose with age, and the exhaustion inflicted violet splodges beneath their eyes.
They were kids again, trying their best to catch up on the lost years of brotherly bickering.
...
The air began to cool off as the evening drifted. Nero was unchained from his duties, sipping a chilled beer, pleased hums and sighs resounding from his chest. Kyrie cuddled into Nero’s side, the both of them entangled behind the table. Viewing the spectacle, Dante turned to Vergil once more.
"I think mum and pops would be proud." The statement came out of the blue, yet did not startle the blue devil. Instead, his visage was graced with a saccharine smile, the type that Dante had rarely seen in the man. In fact, it was only witnessed during their eventful, albeit brief, childhood.
"Hmm… I hope so." Sighing, contentment written all over Vergil’s features, he craned his neck up to the trees, breathing in the tender breeze of the summer evening.
Dante continued to reminisce about his nephew, and the love of Nero’s life. Seeing the shy ‘couple’ back in Fortuna, he never anticipated to witness this decade-long result; A great-nephew. Kyrie seemed to glow as she nuzzled into her beloved’s side, with a five month bump becoming a prominent addition to her frame. It was a wondrous thing to Dante, knowing that their little dysfunctional family was ever-expanding. The fuzzy feelings appeared to bloom at an exponential rate, which the scarlet devil attempted to gulp down with bubbling alcohol.
He was proud of them. Proud of the tiny group. His family.
A boisterous Nico interrupted any thoughts, eclipsing the view of the couple with her presence.
"So, 'nother beer for ya, gents?" She offered to provide more drinks, with Dante gladly accepting and Vergil politely declining. Whilst the Spardas’ intoxication was low, Lady and Trish were completely sloshed. Their joyous dancing was evidence of the fact.
Nico turned to the middle of the garden where the pair were swaying their arms about as if they were attempting to fend off mosquitos.
“Lady is gonna regret all that booze in the morning. Not sure ‘bout Trish though.” As the young gunsmith twirled on her heels to approach Nero and Kyrie, the dancing pair of intoxicated women began to beckon Dante.
“Hey! Give us your iconic MJ dance!” Trish slurred not a single word, Dante noting that she was playing the drunk to accompany Lady.
“C’moooon Mr. Sparda. Please?” Lady, however, slurred every word. It wasn’t often she had the time or the energy to let loose, so the evening was some well deserved alleviation of pent up stress and frustration. In the distance, Kyrie giggled at Lady’s tipsiness, earning the birthday girl an amorous peck on her button nose from Nero.
The scarlet devil stood from his seat whilst giving Nico an impish smirk, before summoning Dr. Faust into his palm. It appeared as though the cowboy hat materialised from countless twinkling coils of demonic energy. Nico returned his mischievous smile with her own, silently fist bumping the air. Nero simply sighed and clicked his tongue, mirroring his father’s own mannerisms of annoyance and exasperation.
“Not again…”
“YES AGAIN! HIT IT, DANTE!” Nico joined in on the two buzzed women on the garden dancefloor. As a natural performer, Dante swished the headpiece upon his crown, assuming a pose that could wow the crowd.
For hours, the party continued, each member of the crew joining in on the song and dance. Even Vergil pranced into the centre, grabbing a wasted Lady to waltz with him. Toasts were made, followed by treasured tears trailing alongside the speeches, each word weighing the world. Their love for each other, and this little makeshift family, could not be altered or demolished in any way possible. For each of these members lost someone close to them. Whether it was a father, a mother, a brother, or their entire livelihood. They ultimately found a group of like-minded individuals to fill the void. Nothing could separate them.
‘You belong here’ a tiny cherished voice uttered in the back of Dante’s mind. For the first time in decades, he was happy. He felt like he belonged.
Hell, he did belong.
And nothing could change the fact.

A discussion on Bayonetta 2
I’ve started replaying this, and I want to talk about how my opinion on it has changed since I tried it out a couple years ago.
I think the game feels like a bunch of people who were fans of Bayonetta 1 wanted to make a sequel game for it, rather than the people who DEVELOPED Bayonetta 1. It lacks self confidence.
I say this because it is waaaay too close in its narrative structure to Bayo 1, to the extent that it seems like they were shy to make it too different. This is to its detriment, because Bayo had that structure for a number of reasons, partly constraints on the team, partly because it was suited to a specific style that the game reinforced at all stages. Bayo 2 does not share that same style yet goes for the same structure.
With the ways the game was expanded, it is based on what the team behind Bayo 1 said that they wanted to include in the game but couldn’t.
This accounts for story elements, including Aesir being the enemy - the Ivatholl group was originally called the Aesir and it’s even probable this god’s presence was an idea Kamiya dreamt up in his lore, not sure.  Jeanne and Bayo are living together which is Kamiya’s fanboy idea for what happened after the game, fantastic. Luka is now an... archaeologist? The game starts off very fanservicy, which I’m fine with.  They go to HELL, which is a place they never got to visit in Bayo 1.  ...The story involves a young Balder and Rosa, elements that Kamiya said he’d want to touch on if he made a sequel. Not necessarily, however, elements that this game expanded on thoroughly.
The game’s most insecure element is involving Loki and calling him “Little one” and having Bayo run around trying to save him. I feel like this was a very half baked idea, and it seems to have gnostic elements to it which Kamiya is VERY much into, but this ends up overriding the more interesting conflict of Bayo going to hell to save Jeanne.
Regarding gameplay - The game seems to have had more development time on those things which were sacrificed for Bayo 1, including environments (which were continuously copy pasted last time due to strict memory limitations) and a number of awesome setpieces. There’s also tons of NPCs in the starting area. It’s just got much more going on with its visual effects too.
.....This seems to have come at the expense of combat. This matches the pattern that Platinum have been taking, in that combat has been neutered so that your offensive capabilities are restricted to some “bigger” attacks you can make. Wicked Weaves were nerfed so that you’re encouraged to use Umbral Climax more. It’s way harder to stun enemies and perform combos on them. Witch Time lasts for less time??? Wicked Weaves are less powerful. The weapons have a lower skill floor, but also have a lower skill ceiling.
The most egregious change, which is what has convinced me they spent far less time on combat the second time around, is that some enemies can have attacks that hit you with next to no warning and opportunity to dodge. Some enemies can also DISAPPEAR while you’re attacking them and they transition into another attack animation - incredibly lazy, something not seen in the first game at all.
This puzzled me because the enemy designer for the game is the same as in the previous game. They must not have given him the opportunity to improve the design, or maybe he lost steam. He said in the developer video that it was his goal to make sure all the enemies had clear attack indicators and could be countered at all times, so what happened to that????
These changes are interesting to compare to the Devil May Cry series. DMC2 was a complete disaster for so many reasons that I don’t think they had the OPPORTUNITY to think about how the first game did things, so let’s ignore that... DMC3, however, OOZED with self confidence and changed the system in many ways for the better. It retconned the story of the first game somewhat, but made an improved narrative around Vergil.  It was also the debut of Yuji Shimomura, the contracted cinematics director who has done all subsequent games for DMC and of course Bayonetta. The game appeared to be hit by massive constraints, like Bayonetta, but they focused on combat first and made sure it was as good as it could be, then on the enemies themselves, then on some of the key cinematics, THEN on the environment. So the environment in DMC3 kinda sucks for the most part but you don’t care because you’re having fun.
....DMC4 was not nearly as self conscious as Bayo 2 about being a good sequel, because it was made by the same director as 3, but it fell into a number of pitfalls around its level design and enemy design. The combat was at its very best, but everything else seemed to be hurt.
DMC5 is a perfect example of what Bayo 2 wanted to be. It’s a fanboy sequel, but it isn’t limited to the narrative structure of the previous games. It ditches the idea of reusing old locations and instead makes new locations that are easy as hell to build. It maintains the excellent combat system of 4 in what I percieve to be its full intended glory (inertia users would disagree), despite having to deal with the new hyper graphics RE2 engine that’s not built for these sorts of games.
There are a couple of drawbacks to the game, like how some enemy attacks are ridiculously hard to avoid, especially with Nero. However enemies overall have more ways to dispatch of them than in 4, which went downhill fast the moment you played as Dante, despite his improvements.
So, I think DMC series followed a natural progression of improving and getting bigger and badder and building on its best parts, while Bayonetta doesn’t seem confident to move away from the first game.
I think that this will only be exacerbated if Bayo 3 turns out to have time travel elements involved, and has a similarly neutered combat system to Bayo 2. There is lots of evidence the game is in Development Hell right now. We don’t know anything about what’s happening with it, and if it’ll even be a nintendo exclusive anymore. Platinum have gone through many changes since Kamiya was a games director.

Relationships in Devil May Cry: Father & Son (spoilers ahead)
I finish playing Devil May Cry V, and there’s something that I found very interesting how Capcom carefully put the relationships between characters (except how things happen that way and suddenly one character have a son, at least Nero and Kyrie relationship is well explain)
We all know that Dante and Nero know each other for long time. Dante knowing that Nero is his nephew, more precisely Vergil’s son (because he don´t mention the word NEPHEW). Dante consciously or unconsciously acts like a father for Nero, a mentor guiding his way to who he is (not saying “what he is” because sounds horrible) how to use his devil power bla bla bla. This last occurs during the events of DMC4 and ends with Dante giving the Yamato (The Family treasure) to Nero like it was some kind of traditional symbology, in other words saying “welcome to the family!“ (father to son).
Tumblr media
Now we move to Devil May Cry 5, putting aside my own mind blow theory about the meaning of title of the game (Devil May Cry V => V also reading as a letter = this game focus in Vergil and his inner thoughts and issues) something that I preferred to write it later or maybe not.
Tumblr media
In this game we encounter the missing Father and the lonely orphan boy (ironically Vergil was also a lonely orphan boy). Dante acts like an intermediary in both sides, in Nero’s side he try not to tell that the guy who is unleashing hell itself is his biological father(protecting Nero from hurt and don’t let him carry any responsibility in killing his old man), and Vergil’s side he’s trying to tell him how much he and their mother cares for him and tried to save him in that  fateful day when the demons attack them. I also want to express that SPARDA WAS A MISSING FATHER TOO (seriously!!! whats wrong with this family?) SPARDA IS ALL TO BLAME.
THE FAMILY ENCOUNTER
Once the 3 are together (Dante, Nero & Vergil) the scene is very tense and awkward, like everyone doesn’t know what to do in this kind of scenario (they only know one thing: FIGHT), nobody dares to speak, Vergil only limit himself to pick up the book. Until Dante (the one who holds the whole truth of both) breaks the awkwardness and jump to attack Vergil (like I said before, they only know one thing: FIGHT). Once Vergil leaves (the awkwardness disappear and Nero start to talk to Dante anciently because he doesn’t understand what’s going on at all) Dante try to give mediocre excuses to Nero of why he can’t go with him bla bla bla (I fell that Nero doesn´t want to be left behind, because he doesn’t want to be abandoned), until Dante lost it (because he is tired to be the one holding the truth and this whole family matter... don´t blame him) and tell Nero the TRUTH and he LEAVES (abandoned him) but this “abandoned” is because DANTE WANTS TO PROTECT NERO from the cruel truth (remember about Nico & Agnus and Lady & Arkham).
Then Nero doesn’t know what to do with that, he is confused, angry with everybody, he feels betrayed. Until he calls Kyrie and tell her his issues in his head and calm him down.
Tumblr media
Then, his devil trigger change, I take this new transformation as Nero accepting his roots and everything at 100%, and making peace with it.
Tumblr media
if you can see, the new devil trigger is blue because (obviously) Vergil biological inheritance and some red in it referring to Dante, like I said in the beginning he was like a mentor for him in DMC4.
“UNTIL THEN“ DISTANCE
Dante (he is the Dr. Phil in devil may cry hahahahahaha) tell Vergil that Nero is his son, Nero arrives they fight (Is the only way this family can understand each other). Then both Vergil and Dante leaves Nero, again he feels abandoned by both type of father, the biological and the mentor (I’m starting to feel sorry for kid)
Tumblr media
and their “UNTIL THEN“ is very interesting.
Dante is very close, telling him he trust Nero’s strength, he touch Nero’s shoulder and bla bla.. VERY CLOSE DISTANCE as a mentor
Tumblr media
And Vergil, is in a FAR DISTANCE but he throw the book (maybe is Vergil’s favorite book considering that V hold it all the time) starting a new connection with him, little by little (baby steps) same ritual as DANTE giving the sword (sorry Nero, Vergil need the sword) something precious to him until he returns for “another match“ (is like a father playing sport with his son)
Tumblr media
This part reminds me that during the DMC4 Nero doesn’t pay attention to books
Tumblr media
Now, after this whole game, Nero started to hold a book, I interpret this as KNOWING HIS FATHER (the things he likes, his personality, etc) because all the way from DMC4 until the end of DMC 5, Nero’s attitude is more like Dante cooky, impulsive, etc.
Tumblr media
And now that Nero know his father and his family he started to act more like Vergil (open the book and see its content).
Also mentioning that now Dante and Vergil are in hell figthting/playing like brother with smile in their faces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When in DMC3, was all ALONE in hell
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION
Fathers in DMC Sucks!!
Sorry for my english, I hope I made myself clear

Let’s talk about DMC5
*So a little disclaimer before I start - I’m a fairly new fan of the DMC series. The first gameplay I’ve ever watched on youtube was DmC: Devil may Cry, and back then I thought it was awesome and really wanted to buy it. I still like it though, since it was what got me into games. But after watching gameplays of all DMC series (unfortunatelly I only have a laptop and it’s not suited for gaming) I got sucked into its glory and now i can proudly call myself a DMC fan. Also, I’ve seen the E3 trailer when it came out, but kinda forgot that DMC5 was a thing because I have to write my bachelor’s degree thesis and it’s been very busy these past 3 months. Then came Christmas and I finally got some time to catch up. Okay, I’m done explaining myself.*
THE CHARACTERS:
DANTE
Tumblr media
Yaaaaaas he’s back! I know som of the fans are not happy with his old look, but to me he looks very good. He’s got that sexy, cocky uncle-type guy that nobody  dares to ask how old he is. He slightly resembles his DMC4 design, but maybe it’s just me.
As for his overall design: I love they went with the cowboy theme again (did you see that tiny demon flowing around him when he uses faust hat? SOOOO CUTE); I’m also pleased with the toned down color palette - this game goes with the more modernised look, so it’s understandable none of the characters wear flashy colours. I mean Dante does look like he’s got only like 3 or 4 identical shirts, and he’s been wearing that coat for a loooooong time (I mean it is $8000 and we all know he must’ve saved for at least 10 years to buy it. Ma’ poor boy ;_______;). I’m not down for his shorter hair, but still it’s incomparably better than Donte’s hair - pretty much everything is better than Donte. I’m a simple girl, I love male characters with longer hair.
Good thing they changed his theme, ‘cause that was horrible. From what I’ve heard in the TGA trailer, it sounds way better. Not sure if this genre suits Dante, though. I thought he was more of a Nothing More/ Łydka Grubasa/ Nocny Kochanek type of guy (two last ones are polish rock? bands with very funny lyrics, I recomend you listen to them).
Here’s an idea: WHAT IF THEY MADE A COUNTRY/HARD ROCK SONG AS HIS THEME??? OR BETTER YET - COUNTRY ROADS METAL COVER!!! OH THAT WOULD BE EVERYTHING!!!
NERO
Tumblr media
My boy Nero... what can I say, I love this version of him. He looks more mature, and more defined (I mean look at his jaw) as opposed to his previous design where he looked like a generic anime boy version of Sparda twins. He felt bleak and not very interesting. And now? My boy’s got a character! Totally love the short hair - I legit believe he looks like Jack Frost after some hard life decisions, but still a badass character - and his coat. Also it’s a lovely little detail that he’s got the same eye color as Dante. His Devil Bringer design looks so much different than before, but with a more realistic touch. *It’s totally Vergil who ripps his arm off, no doubt. Honestly best father of the year*
I’m afraid this will be the end of our beloved KYRIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! screams every second sentence. Hm. wonder what she’ll look like...
Ah, his theme. I cannot stress hard enough how awesome his theme is. I could listen to it for hours (and I have, for about 4h straight when I had to study for one of my kanji tests) and not be sick of it. Ughhhhh it’s just such a banger.
V
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, he’s my favourite one of the three. Honestly, I’m a sucker for a mysterious dark character with tattoos. He looks younger than Nero, so I’m guessing he’s in early 20′s? I think he and maybe Trish were the least altered from their models. And his voice! Ughhhhh so erotic. His VA, whoever he may be (from what I know it’s his first VA job), he is doing it right! I hate poetry but please read me some Blake! I know most of people call him Kylo Ren, but I don’t really see the resemblance; he’s more like you put Byakuya (the later version) and Noctis into one person. Not sure about those sandals tho. Weird flex but what can we do, it’s not like he can fight for himself...
And while we’re at this topic - his familiars are all bosses/enemies from the original game, what’s up with that? I’ve seen countless theories on who V might be, but at this point it’s probably gonna be something nobody thought of and we’ll all lose our shit. *Also, his hair being originally white is some shady shit*
His theme is a banger, too; I only like it slightly less than Devil Trigger. It honestly suits him. Like, V does have a industrial/ etheric/ poetic vibe and it shows in his theme. Some people may think that the metal cover is better (and yes, it does sound very good), but V doesn’t look like he’d listen to this type of music.
On the sidenote: I love how most people thought he had a corset under his coat. I thought it was something like a vest, but now that it was revealed it’s just there to close the coat and he’s practically half naked I’m so down for it. How confident you have to be to wear nothing but a coat, pants AND SANDALS TO A BATTLE!? That’s some Big Dick Energy right there.
And I think that’s it from me. I can’t wait for the premiere and I would gladly play this game if I had a chance.

Devil May Cry 4 SE spoiler free review/rant!
Tumblr media
With all the DMC5 hype, and with all the no-money I have, I went and watched the cutscenes of the new game. Yes, don't judge me, some people just don't have the money to buy it the day it's released. Some people don't even have a ps4 so watching cutscenes is the only alternative if you wanna enjoy the story. This was my case for far too long, when I only owned a ps2 and I was craving for the ps3 I never got. So I'm used to watching cutscenes of the games I knew I wouldn't be able to play at all; and this is no difference, for I have some priorities (cof cof Kingdom Hearts 3 – yes, I'm still saving for it) before throwing my money at Capcom.
SO obviously after watching the cutscenes and getting all the feels and, idk, reminiscing all my love for these characters, I went back to my old file of DMC4 and kept playing. I had been stuck at Mission 11 for a stupid platforming thing that I couldn't wrap my head around it, but somehow, magically, this time I managed (after falling from that wall like 25 times). I'm going to be honest here: I like the DMC franchise for its story, which, ironically, is what most people consider to be the worst aspect of these games. What I try to say is, I suck at playing it. I'm not ashamed of that fact. I play games first for their stories, and then for their gameplay, and my philosophy is that, if I can't enjoy the story because the gameplay is obstructing me, then I'm sorry but that game just isn't for me. That's one of the reasons why I hesitated so much before buying Bloodborne (you can guess: I still haven't finished it). Yes, I suck at DMC4 and 3, and probably the other two as well. I did play the first three, but I never finished them, and I followed their stories thanks to the magic of Youtube. Around that time, when I wanted to have a ps3 and I couldn't, I watched DMC4's cutscenes many times. When it was finally on sale in psn, I didn't think twice: I bought the special edition. So here I was, trying to finish this stupid file on Human difficulty (then again, I'm not ashamed of admitting it) and at last claim the title of "yes, I PLAYED that game!"
Initially, like I said, I've only watched its cutscenes. I was in love with Dante, with Vergil and with Nero. I admired them and their badassness. Slash, punch, wahoo, everything. And I've heard multiple times that DMC3 was a masterpiece and that DMC2 fell flat in almost everything and then that DMC4 is just… an unfinished game. And oh boy, did I feel that as well!
A little introduction for those of you who for some reason don't know anything about Devil May Cry: Dante, the son of the legendary demon Sparda and the human Eva, is a demon hunter. He's cocky, confident and loves taunting his enemies. Vergil is Dante's twin brother: as you can guess, brotherly rivalry (maybe too much rivalry). Nero is the newcomer to DMC4, which triggered many debatable reactions, because fans just love their Dante. Unfortunately for those who don't like Nero, he's the real protagonist of this game. The story revolves around his city, Fortuna; Kyrie, his love interest; and the fact that he's one quarter of a demon, because he descends, too, from Sparda.
So the leader of this occult religious order, Sanctus, worshipper of Sparda, has some god-syndrome and wants to rule the world, opening the hellgates all over the place and kidnapping Kyrie in the process. So it's up to Nero to rescue his (girl)friend, learning some things about himself in the way there. He crosses paths with Dante, who's there because, well, he gotta stop that stupid Sanctus, you know? But Nero confuses his intromissions with an enemy, and their relationship starts off as an opposition. Soon Dante sees something special (even familiar) in this young man, but we'll leave that for another day.
So that's it, that's the premise: you fight your way across the city of Fortuna with Nero and his devilish arm. Halfway through the game(ish) Nero is incapacitated for the time being and it's time to go back to sweet old Dante. Sadly, it's not actually "half" of the game, but just a few missions, and here's where the "unfinished" thing comes into place.
You see, Nero goes forward across the map, and then Dante undoes the same way, going backwards, up until the very first section of the game. And they fight exactly the same demons, the same bosses and go around the same places. Hadn't it been for the fact that Dante plays quite differently than Nero, you wouldn't see a difference between these two routes. And it's frustrating.
Another thing that screams "unfinished" is Mission 19. This is your own very section of boss rushes. The same four bosses that you've encountered with Nero and Dante, you have to fight them yet once more. So it's the same four or five bosses that you fight three THREE THREE times. By this point, you can play against them with your eyes closed.
And this is such a pity! Because the story is good, Nero is a good protagonist to attract younger audience, Dante is at his prime in both personality and abilities, and they even threw some romance into the mix to shake some things up. So why did this have to happen? Well, the devs have admitted they had to release the game in a certain deadline and they had to rush things by end of the cycle, acknowledging that it was incomplete. Due to this, Dante's section of the game feels like a replay of Nero's section, in the lazy kind of way. I can't blame anyone if they complain about this, because it's painfully true.
But still, I can't help but love these characters. I can't help but care for Dante, and his quirky, funny dances; I can't help but cry NOOO whenever Nero wants to save Kyrie. I know Kyrie receives a lot of hate, but it's not her fault the devs decided to make her this useless. I do wish she had a better role than just being the plain damsel in distress. It goes against everything we women have been fighting for these years! Nevertheless, Nero's love for Kyrie is felt, and it’s the main driving force for our main character, so think it this way: without Kyrie, Nero would've been a very plain protagonist, without real motivation.

This time around, the gameplay is faster than before, for the special edition has the "turbo" mode (I recommend it). And not only you can play as Nero/Dante, but also Lady and Trish make their triumphal appearance here, and also – yes, the lord of all special editions, the man everyone was longing to see in action: Vergil. Although, you may've guessed by now, his role in the story is null (except, well… you'll get it) and he only replays all of the missions as if he were Nero/Dante, with no real involvement in the plot, just like it had happened with DMC3 SE. Same happens with Lady and Trish, but hey, at least you can play as Lady! It's the first time she's playable! And she ROCKS!
I know graphics were never so much a thing for the DMC games, but this title still holds a variety of eye-candy visuals that make me rethink how capable the ps3 was. I know that now everything pales in comparison with DMC5 but don't forget, this game dates from 2008, and the remaster is from 2015, and it still holds up to this day! Pretty amazing, to say the least.
Tumblr media
From a technical aspect, this game is a let down because of the unfinished business, but it feels like, it plays like DMC game. And for many years it was the consolation to that DMC reboot they tried to pull off (we don't talk about that game – although personally I like it, but I don't consider it canonical, or at least, I don't consider it part of this franchise at all). Nero's character is growing ever since, with now being the undeniable protagonist in DMC5. His role, his powers and his origins will drive the plot from now on, obviously accompanied by our beloved Dante, taking in the mentor mantle. Who knows, maybe Nero will be our next devil hunter in red cape?
This game is old, and probably nobody is speaking about it, but I couldn't not add my words to the void. DMC4 was one of my favorite stories back in the day, when I couldn't play games and only could watch cutscenes in YouTube. It holds all these nostalgic feelings for me. It was a time when I didn't have money, when I needed a game to relieve stress and I couldn't, and I found so much joy in these characters that I can't not love them. In fact, after playing it, I realized most of the aesthetics I find beautiful come from this game: the concept of angels, the Savior, and hot dudes with white hair. I just can't even.
In conclusion, it's not the best of games. It's very mediocre. It's very short. And it feels incomplete. But characters are loveable, and it opens the door to countless possibilities for the future of the franchise.
And the future is here! Go play DMC5 and then lend me a copy! 😉 Jk. But DMC5's story is good, and I've heard the gameplay is even better, so Capcom returned with everything they got this year. And I'm glad they did.

Devil May Cry V Review: A Pizza Style Boys End
Tumblr media
Well after 11 long years here we are, a sequel to probably one of my favorite franchise in history, Devil May Cry V and what a fantastic sequel it is. Now unlike my last review, the iron for this one is still warm. I know it's been a month but hear me out here, I want to be able to spoil some stuff and not feel to bad since, hey its been a month since the game came out, but if you still haven’t played DMCV then watch out we got some spoilers up ahead.
Alright so before we go into talking about all the things this game did right and wrong, I should probably give some backstory to this almost 20 year old franchise whose last canon game came out 11 years ago, I know another “DMC” came out since then but we don’t talk about DMC Devil May Cry. So Devil May Cry for those who don’t know is the story of one of the sons of the legendary Dark Knight Sparda, whose Sparda? The biggest baddest demon who decided that demons being dicks on Earth isn’t cool, betrayed his kind and fight them back to hell and sealed them in it using his amazing power. For the next 2000 years, he acted as Earth’s guardian and then eventually he met either the most smoking hot or most powerful or both, girl ever named Eva. He married her and had twin sons named Dante and Vergil. Now demons aren't a big fan of Sparda because of the whole betrayal and locking them into hell thing, and no one hates him more then his old boss, the demon king Mundus. So one day Sparda dies, don’t ask how its never been fully explained he just died, and Mundus sees this as the perfect opportunity for some revenge and sends a bunch of demons to kill Sparda’s family, but those demons suck and only succeeded in killing Eva.

So after all that and to speed this up to talking about the actual game, Dante and Vergil leave their destroyed home and go about following two paths, Vergil stylishly lusting for power and Dante being a stylish gun for hire, and eventually a demon hunter. Backstory aside all you really need to remember is style means everything, Sparda was the coolest, Dante and Vergil have two different ideas on how to live life.
Alright so moving on to DMCV, let's finally talk about what I feel is a perfect end to the story of Dante and Vergil. DMCV takes place about ten years after the events of DMC4 and involves Dante getting a job by mysterious new guy going by “V”, V wants Dante to go kick the ass of this new demon named Urizen who is causing all sorts of havoc in Red Grave City, where he has raised this giant demonic plant called a Qliphoth which if it isn’t stopped will lead to the end of the world. So Dante, his friends Lady and Trish, go to Red Grave City, into the Qliphoth to stop Urizen, but he starts taking a long time so V gets nervous and decides to go pick up Nero, one of the main characters of DMC4, who just a few days ago had gotten his arm ripped off, it was a demonic one that had Vergil’s sword in it. I know that sounds insane, but if I explained everything in this game series we would be here for a forty more pages, so let's just move on, things are crazy and V tells Nero that the demon who took his arm is Urizen and the Dante needs his help. Fast forward a few hours, Dante is losing his fight to Urizen, Trish and lady are knocked out, V can’t do shit since all he can do is hobble on his cane and let his demon buddies do his work for him, so Nero tries to help and also doesn’t question why this demon looks nothing like the human shaped figure that took his arm, he loses, Dante loses and things go south really fast. In the end, Nero leaves to train for a month to try and actually beat Urizen, V stays behind to try and slow down the Qliphoth’s spread and Dante is assumed to be dead.

Well now that all that back story has been dealt with, let's move on to gameplay, setting and the fantastic soundtrack. So while not being the first DMC game that you can play more than one character, it is the first base release game that you play as multiply characters, Nero, V and Dante, who spoilers is still totally fine and alive. Each character plays completely differently, making it so that depending on who you are playing in the level offers a completely different experience. Nero controls similar to his DMC 4 counterpart, he has the Red Queen that can be revved up to do longer and fire infused attacks, he also has his Blue Rose which can be charged to do explosive shot. The difference of DMC V Nero and DMC4 Nero, is that he no longer has his Devil Bringer, his arm that was taken, instead he has a bunch of different prosthetics he can call upon called Devil Breakers, offering different abilities like a big electric hand, a rocket fist, the ability to stop time, one that lets you go wild with big crazy attacks and a few others. Other than that, he has the same combos and movement and if you liked playing as Nero in DMC4 you’ll love it here, especially after you beat the game which is the only thing I won’t fully spoil, just know you can do some cool stuff.
Now if I was to do this right, I would start talking about V, but I want to keep the speed of similar characters going so let's talking about the pizza loving devil hunter Dante. Like Nero, Dante is very similar to his DMC4 counterpart, honestly his is the exact same if it wasn’t for the fact his sword changes three times and he gets Sin Devil Trigger. I know you might he saying why spoil this and not Nero, well this was in the trailers and Nero’s thing wasn’t. Seriously it's the same bread and butter Dante had in DMC4, you can switch between his four styles of Trickster, a dashing and teleporting style, Swordmaster, a style that increase the moveset of your devil arms, Gunslinger, a style that lets you do crazy gun tricks, and Royal Guard, a hard style to master but it lets you guard attacks and turn them back on your enemies. He has his main sword Rebellion, which becomes his main sword Devil Sword Dante, he has his guns Ebony and Ivory and Coyote-A and gains more throughout the course of the story as he beats bosses. You have your devil trigger that lets you regain health and do more damage, and through the story you get Sin Devil Trigger that lets you do insane damage but you cannot heal. Listen, if you like Dante and like playing as him, you will love him in this, he controls well and its stylish as hell.
Alright so it's time for the boy I skipped, V, and the reason for that is because he is the newest character and controls completely different from every other DMC character you have been able to play as. V doesn’t actually fight, he kills demons, but he does not fight, his boys Griffin, Shadow and Nightmare fight for him, demon summons who share appearances and names with enemies from the first Devil May Cry. As V you just stand back and let your demons fight for you and when they drop the enemies health you rush in and kill them with you cane. It is this exact gameplay that has people split, unlike Dante and Nero, you are not in the action, you are off in the distance hitting buttons for combos that you don’t have full control for. Personally, I feel that once you get more used to it that it's not so bad, you have certain moves that allow you to keep control of where Griffin and Shadow are and if things get to hectic or those bastards just won’t listen to you you can spend devil trigger to make them to increase damage and fight by themselves. You also can use devil trigger to summon Nightmare and have him just fall onto the battlefield and fuck things up for you and you can also get an ability that lets you jump up and control him. So while V is the most hands off character and some people are not fans of that, I love and will always protect my hands off emo son.
Tumblr media
The last few things to talk about in DMCV, like always style is a factor in fights and the more varied and different your attacks are leads to higher style points and taunting the enemies gives you a ton of style points, which while before was just so you felt cool, with the games new multiplayer elements in which in certain missions you play alongside other players, now other people can know if you are super cool. However unlike previous DMC games, there are no items to be used, no holy waters or stars to heal you or refill your devil trigger meter, however to balance this enemies drop more orbs that fulfil this function and you can find orb packs to break that heal you or refill your devil trigger.
The setting of this game is much less varied compared to previous canon title DMC4, which I feel is better for it, since you have a coherent theme to the whole story. Your setting is the streets, buildings and sewers of Red Grave City, the destroyed areas around the Qliphoth, and the inside of the Qliphoth itself. Personally, I feel like this gives the game a more end of the world feel, as you see drained corpses of the people of Red Grave City and places that looked lived in just a month ago, I know that other DMC games have let you go through cities, but in those the cities where always just abandoned since they couldn’t really have a bunch of corpses on screen while you were styling on demons.
Alright so one of the things I couldn’t wait to talk about, the soundtrack, which is just great. Listen, if you like any of the other DMC soundtracks you will love this game and if you like rock and roll you will love this games soundtrack. Hell, even if you don’t like rock after a while of playing this game you will grow to love it. The soundtrack is also tied to you style meter so as you do better the song gets better while you are fighting by adding more bass, chorus, and increasing the volume, all building up to a full song to match how cool you look as you dodge, taunt and style on these demons. To get a taste of what it will be like when you go full style god,  lookup Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud and Subhuman, those three songs play while you kick ass as Nero, Dante and V and makes you feel so bad ass when you are taunting and beating down demons. Also the songs during the boss fights are also amazing, seriously the way that DMC incorporates music as you fight is masterful and makes you seem cool as hell.
Now I know I have been singing this games praises, but it is not perfect, its close though damn close. One big detractor that might affect you is the voice acting, it’s great sometimes and others it is just a little of sync to what the character is saying and the story, while great, does have a few moments that are weird like how because Nero says quit it, Dante and a newly refreshed Vergil go alright and stop their fight to the death and instead decide to jump into hell and stop and kill the Qliphoth.
So yeah those are my only complaints, I said it was close to perfect and I mean it. This game is the Devil May Cry that we have deserved since DMC4, it controls well, looks beautiful and gives a final send-off to Dante and Vergil, leaving the stage for future games to focus on Nero and Nico and even new casts of characters. Honestly if you enjoyed old DMC games, even DMC Devil May Cry, pick this game up as you need to play it. If you have never played a DMC game before, play the free demo and see if its your speed and if it is, then dive on it and be the stylish demon hunter you were meant to be.
