Music Safari NYC, continued . . .
[Covers the week of January 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 & 7.]
On January 1, Neal and I got the best seats in the house for The Anderson Brothers' presentation of a few of Irving Berlin's greatest hits.
Tumblr media
That's Molly Ryan, Will Anderson and Peter Anderson. (Or maybe it's Molly, Peter and Will.) It wasn't too late to sing "White Christmas."
On Tuesday (Jan 2), it was Mona's.
Tumblr media
The house band was Jared Engel, Jon Thomas, Josh Dunn (back of head), Aurora, and Tomas Majcherski (not shown above, see below).
Tumblr media
A bunch of great musicians showed up for the second set.
Tumblr media
That's Jared Engel in the foreground, with Matt Munisteri, Aidan Grant (bartender extraordinaire), David Ostwald (if you squint), unknown and unknown looking on.
Tumblr media
Rafael Halvorson-Castillo and Neal Siegal were in for the night.
Jan 3 was a night off . . .
On Thursday, January 4, Paula and I had great seats at Dizzy's for the Mathis Picard Sound Orchestra.
Tumblr media
It was big, big sound - definitely one of the major highlights of this music safari.
Tumblr media
Mathis was joyful. He's been working hard on this, and it showed.
Tumblr media
At his last Dizzy's gig, Mathis got married in the middle of the set, right on stage!
After Mathis, I booked it down to the Village Vanguard to hear the Chris Potter trio.
Tumblr media
He's a great player, but I must confess that the jazz he played was too abstract for my taste.
On Friday, January 5, Neal and I headed over to Barbés to catch VickiKristinaBarcelona.
Tumblr media
VKB is a project by Mamie Minch, Rachelle Garniez and Amanda Homi that reimagines the songs of Tom Waits. I don't know as much as I should about Tom Waits, given how important he seems to be to musicians I admire, but I'm guessing the emphasis is on, "reimagine."
Tumblr media
In a set full of surprises, the most surprising performance of the evening involved Rachelle ringing tuned ceramic hand bells - precisely and skillfully - to play a melody.
Tumblr media
On Saturday, January 6, it was raining and the 1-2-3 subway was not running due to a derailment, so I opted to stay closer to home.
Tumblr media
Neal and I caught yet another set of "Miss Maybell and the Jazz Age Artistes," at the Motto Hotel (by Hilton) on 24th street. That's Charlie Judkins on the keys, Brian Nalepka on bass and Miss Maybell strummin on the old banjo.
Tumblr media
Margaret Batiuchok was dancing up a storm to Miss Maybell. She got this young dancer going . . . very charming!
Tumblr media
On Sunday, January 7, the usual crowd was at The Ear - and the more regular players in the Ear-Regulars. Maestro Kellso on trumpet, the beard of reeds-player Scott Robinson, Matt Munisteri on guitar extrordinaire, and Pat O'Leary on bass (see below).

Crane's Task Force X servitude headcanon masterpost.
[Hiiii since I finished my yearly rewatch of all of the animated Suicide Squad films, I figured this was about time.]
One of the few Squad members to not have a bomb implanted in his neck. Since there was never an official consensus on the roleplay server proper, I took it upon myself as an RP space moderator to lay down some ground rules. As such, that incarnation of Amanda Waller riffs off the 1980's edition, where she was first introduced. That Waller had other ways to manipulate people; in Crane's case, it was the threat of having him shipped to an even worse prison than Arkham or Belle Reve, one where they "cared" enough to forcibly sterilize minorities and the disabled [of which he is both.]
Of the members of his core Suicide Squad team alive at the time of the Anarky-led breakout [see my backstory doc for slightly more info on that], he got along with Katana, Thinker, Firefly, Killer Frost, and Deadshot the best, and has surprisingly attempted to remain in contact with those who were willing.
As mentioned previously, he respected Deadshot greatly. Also had kind of a crush on the guy?
Also bonded with The Fiddler [Isaac Bowin] before he was killed on mission, and Savant [Brian Durlin] before his sentence finished and he went back to working with the Birds of Prey. Bowin moreso because Crane has a soft spot for "naïve idiots". He was actually sad when Bowin died.
Typically not sent on physically strenuous missions towards the end of his 3-year tenure unless somebody really needed a Cantonese translator. Amanda picked him up knowing he was dying but because he'd been out of the public so long underestimated just how quickly his health turned for the worst.
Even then, his experimenting on himself over the years has given him a natural toxin immunity. Quite useful when you're shored up with a bunch of metahumans....and Captain Boomerang, whose cooking is enough to kill. Crane can digest just about anything at this point, but the real question is whether he's willing to.
Was pretty much only valued for his [canon] contortionist abilities and as a last-ditch field psychologist and therapist when Simon LaGrieve wasn't available. Unfortunately he's unreliable as hell unless he likes you, or simply is curious enough to nose around into your business.
Goaded Waller into blowing up Dollhouse/Matilda Mathis while on mission, despite proclaiming he tolerated the girl. This was really just for his own amusement, and to test which of them had bombs. He's just not a fan of hack surgeons.
Hates the TSA even more because of his Suicide Squad tenure. He was definitely one of the more "normal" people on the Squad, and thus flew public when his team had to split up. With the amount of metal in his body, Jonathan lights up like a Christmas tree under a body scanner.
Somehow became even more of a shameless asshole, only this time trading his body for intel and secrets instead of financial/personal security. Has this been an improvement? Who knows. He got pregnant twice, and actually of his own volition this time.
He'll never admit it, but he enjoyed being paid to maul people. Still considers himself very retired though, as he is pushing 70 [in his mid-60's currently] and actively dying. There's just no way he could have kept up with the physical demand of the job for much longer. His everything is kind of giving out.
Actually gained weight during his tenure, as opposed to further starving to death. It helped that Waller gave a shit about her more useful inmates' dietary requirements [i.e., he's mostly tube fed due to the scar tissue and general lack of teeth].

On The Jukebox: George Michael - “Songs From The Last Century”
Tumblr media
[Bit of a left turn for George as this is an album of covers.  Track listing is as follows:
“Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?” (Depression era standard from 1932, best known from cover versions by Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee)
“Roxanne” (originally performed by The Police)
“You’ve Changed” (originally performed by Harry James & His Orchestra although likely inspired by Billie Holiday’s cover version)
“My Baby Just Cares For Me” (originally performed by Eddie Cantor although possibly inspired by Nina Simone’s cover version)
“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (originally performed by Peggy Seeger although likely inspired by Roberta Flack’s cover version)
“Miss Sarajevo” (originally performed by Passengers [aka U2 & Brian Eno] featuring Luciano Pavarotti)
“I Remember You” (originally performed by Jimmy Dorsey)
“Secret Love” (originally performed by Doris Day, possibly inspired by Kathy Kirby’s cover version as that was a big hit in the UK)
“Wild Is The Wind” (originally performed by Johnny Mathis, possibly inspired by Nina Simone’s cover version)
“Where Or When” (originally performed by Ray Heatherton and Mitzi Green in the movie musical “Babes In Arms”.  This song has been covered a lot so it’s hard to pin down exactly what version might have inspired George’s cover)
“It’s All Right With Me” (Instrumental) (Hidden Track) (Like “Where Or When”, this song is a part of the Great American Songbook so it’s hard to tell which version might have inspired George’s cover)]

Who wrote sugar sugar archies

He was also involved in the development of new recording artists, as well as appearing in concert, across the United States. Over the years, Dante has finished producing several videos which include The Association, The Grass Roots, Mark Lindsay, Lou Christie, and Brian Hyland just to name a few.
#Who wrote sugar sugar archies tv
His voice can also be heard on dozens of radio and TV commercials.
#Who wrote sugar sugar archies series
Dante also co-wrote many songs performed by Jay And The Americans and Johnny Mathis, and was musical producer for Disney's TV series The Little Mermaid.ĭante can be heard singing background vocals on numerous hits including the McCoys' "Hang On Sloopy", Tommy James' "Draggin' the Line" and the Manilow hits of the '70's. The song was a takeoff of "Leader of the Pack," sung by the Shangri-Las. Previously, with The Detergents in the mid-'60s, he helped take "Leader of the Laundromat" into the Top Ten. Some of Ron Dante's other production credits include, Cher, Ray Charles, John Denver, Dionne Warwick, Pat Benatar, Paul Schaeffer and of course, The Archies. Barry asked Ron to listen to some of his songs that day and the two went on to turn out some of the biggest hits of the seventies. The other singers on that commercial were Valerie Simpson and Melissa Manchester. Dante met Manilow while both were singing a commercial which Barry had written. Another backup singer, Andy Kim, had a #1 hit in 1974 with a solo song, "Rock Me Gently". Ellie Greenwich and Toni Wine, the female vocalists, enjoyed lengthy careers as a songwriter and session vocalist, respectively. Ron Dante, who sang all the lead vocals, went on to sing other Bubble gum tunes like the Billboard #9 hit "Tracy" (as The Cuff Links) and produced most of Barry Manilow's chart successes in the seventies. The group is also notable for the singers who provided the voices of The Archies, all of whom went on to successful careers. The group also enjoyed another Top 10 hit in 1970, with "Jingle Jangle", before Bubble gum music gave way to Disco. It went to #1 in the Summer of 1969, selling six million copies and knocking The Rolling Stones off the top of the charts in the process. "Sugar Sugar" was an infectious tune built on rich boy-girl harmonies and a catchy instrumental hook played on the xylophone. But it was a song released the next year that won the animated group its biggest success. The first one, "Bang-Shang-A-Lang" was a #22 hit on the Pop charts and got the band off to a good start. The Archies' songs were also issued as singles. Kirshner tapped veteran Pop producer Jeff Barry to assemble the snappy, kid-friendly songs The Archie Show needed. The show's music was supervised by Don Kirshner, the man who put together the music for The Monkees. Each episode featured a song and dance segment performed by the characters. The Archies began their animated lives when The Archie Show debuted on Saturday morning in September of 1968. Why? Because they were cartoon characters. However, despite this success they never did any live performances or touring. Search for: Follow This, That, and the Other on WordPress. The Archies were a Bubblegum Pop group that had a #1 hit, appeared frequently on Saturday morning television, and put out three hit albums. I’m gonna make your life so sweet, yeah yeah yeah Oh sugar, pour a little sugar on it honey Like the summer sunshine pour your sweetness over me When I kissed you, girl, I knew how sweet a kiss could be I just can’t believe the one to love this feeling to I just can’t believe the loveliness of loving you It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969 and remained there for four weeks. The song was initially released in late May 1969, on the Calendar label, but achieved only moderate chart success until it was re-released in mid-July 1969 on the Kirshner label, where it became a massive success by late summer/early fall. The “you are my candy girl” line came from them thinking about what kids that age like (candy). The song falls in the genre of pop music known as “bubblegum music.” Bubblegum music, which was popular in the late 60s and early 70s, had an upbeat sound designed to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers.Īccording to Jeff Barry, he and Andy Kim wrote this song with preschoolers in mind since that was the audience for the Archie TV show. It was originally recorded by the virtual band the Archies, a group that performed on the Saturday morning cartoon show, Archie. “Sugar, Sugar” was a song written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday, the prompt is “sugar/candy.” I’m positive that many of my fellow bloggers will select the same song I have chosen, since it’s all about sugar and candy!

Bills fans have rallied to Knox's support by donating more than $100,000 to the P.U.N.T. Knox is the younger brother of Bills tight end Dawson Knox, who has been excused from the team to be with his family. The Bills held a moment of silence before the game to honor Florida International linebacker Luke Knox, who died on Wednesday. OT Casey Tucker did not return after hurting his right foot in the third quarter.īILLS: S Nick McCloud returned after requiring six stitches to close a gash on his face in the first quarter. CB Michael Ojemudia did not return after hurting his right elbow in the second quarter. Signed by the Bills to a six-year contract in March, the NFL's active leader in sacks (115 1/2) spent part of the pre-game warmups chatting with former teammates.īRONCOS: P Sam Martin was ruled out after hurting his ankle in pregame warmups. He replaced Brian Daboll, who was hired by the New York Giants, and had been Allen's only coordinator over his first four seasons in Buffalo.īills pass-rusher Von Miller got the day off in facing his former team after being traded by the Broncos to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams last season. One reason Allen got the start was the Bills wanted to provide him live action and a chance to get more comfortable working with Dorsey, who was promoted from his quarterbacks coach role this offseason. On his TD pass to Davis, Allen attempted to scramble to his left before stepping back in the pocket and finding his receiver in the left side of the end zone with a step on rookie cornerback Damarri Mathis. The Bills finished with 510 yards and scored touchdowns on each of their first six possessions before Matt Haack punted from midfield with 8:08 remaining. Matt Barkley mopped up for Buffalo, and finished 7 of 8 for 65 yards in the second half. The run is the NFL's second-longest active streak behind the Baltimore Ravens, who have won a league-record 21 straight, and play at Arizona on Sunday.Īfter overseeing a 12-play, 64-yard opening drive that ended with Brandon McManus hitting a 33-yard field goal, Johnson's final three drives of the half combined for 52 yards and three first downs.ĭenver's Brett Rypien finished 22 of 26 for 191 yards and a 1-yard touchdown to Eric Saubert with 10:55 remaining. Zach Moss rounded out the first-half scoring with a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, while Duke Johnson scored on 2- and 8-yard runs in the second half.īuffalo extended its preseason winning streak to 10 games. Keenum threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in a 27-24 win over Indianapolis last week. Backup Case Keenum continued the scoring by closing out the first half overseeing three touchdown drives.Īcquired in a trade with Cleveland this offseason, Keenum bounced back from a sloppy preseason debut by finishing 16 of 18 for 192 yards and perfectly placed 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end O.J. Josh Allen needed just six plays to lead the Bills 70 yards for an opening-drive touchdown before taking a seat in his preseason debut, and Buffalo routed the Denver Broncos' backups 42-15 on Saturday.Īllen completed all three attempts for 45 yards, capped by a 28-yard touchdown to Gabe Davis in showing he and new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey are on the same page.
