Hazel and Jack needed space after Hazel’s single flirtation had lead to Jack, in a fit of pique, making out with their landlord. And given who he had made out with, Jack couldn’t stay in their apartment anymore.

Things moved quickly. Hazel filed their notice to move out with the landlord. If reconciliation was to remain an option, she didn’t want him around that woman.

Financially, it meant he didn’t have a choice but to move in with his mother, who had enough room to accommodate him and all the children.

Hazel refused to stay in the building herself, which meant she couldn’t live with her Dad. She also didn’t want to impose on her uncle Jordan again, or on her cousin Justin. Which meant living with her adult son, Rafe.

Jack clearly immediately regretted his choices. He was confused about how he felt about the landlord, but wished to mend fences with Jessica and more importantly with his wife.

“Do you really have to go, Mom?”

“Yes, Dustin. Be good for your father, okay?”

“Promise we’ll see you soon, Mom?”

“I’ll be in touch, Shay. I love you. Your Dad and I need space from each other, not from you. Okay?”

Of course, none of it was okay. Hazel hadn’t felt this lost or confused since she had returned from living on the streets, 7 months pregnant with Rafe and still in high school.

When she and Jack had married, they had talked about the importance of a stable home, for themselves and for their kids. Her parents’ separation had been awful. The hope she had felt when they had decided to get back together had only made her mother’s untimely death that much worse.

“Dustin, you absolutely have to finish your project by tomorrow. Your Mom and my problems are no excuse not to do homework.”

“Maybe if you die, Shay, Mommy and Daddy will be so sad that they’ll get back together.”

“That’s not helpful, Briony.”

“You’re going to get back together, right Daddy?” Shay begged to be told that they would.

“If you do, will Mommy die like Grandma Briony did?”

“That’s really not helpful, Briony. Off to bed, all of you. We’re moving to Granny’s tomorrow.”

The next day, they packed up their belongings and went to Granny’s house.

Ginger was delighted to have Jack and the kids around, although very unhappy about the reason. She had offered for all of them to move in, but Jack and Hazel had wanted some independence.

At least she had the kindness not to comment that this whole thing might not have happened if Jack and Hazel had been living with her in the first place.

Fletcher, Ginger’s husband, was also quite pleased at the idea of having the grandchildren around. Having never had kids of his own, he liked the idea of being a Grampy to Ginger’s Granny.

Hazel arrived at Rafe’s apartment in Ashford City in the middle of the night. 

“I’m sorry. You must have been sleeping.”

“I was just partying at Jess’s. I came home and got ready to sleep when I saw your message. What the hell happened, Mom. That doesn’t sound like Jack at all.”

“I can’t explain it, Rafe. It was so unlike him. So impulsive.”

“I should have stayed and helped you with all the kids. And Grandad? It’s been a lot of stress; people do stupid things when they are stressed.”

“People do stupid things, Rafe. I’m worried about your Grandad - we have friends in the building, but... None of this is easy, but we also have to look out for ourselves first. You have to live your best life anyway. Jack and I will work it out, or we won’t. I’ll try not to crash on your couch too long.”

“Mom, you are welcome as long as you need it. This is your home now.”

Hazel appreciated that her son knew just how much it mattered to her to have a home, but, being a bachelor, he couldn’t understand that her home for the last 10 years had been her husband, Jack.
