The disqualification effort against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in the sweeping RICO case against former President Donald Trump and his allies is gaining steam.
Four of the co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case—Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, Cathy Latham and Michael Roman—revealed in Monday court filings that they are filing their own appeals in the rejected bid to remove Willis.
Giuliani is a former Trump attorney, Meadows is the former White House chief of staff, and Latham is a former state Republican leader. Roman is the former Trump aide whose attorney first revealed that Willis was in a personal relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade in January.
They now join Trump, former Georgia GOP Chairman David Shafer and seven other defendants in their bid to challenge Judge Scott McAfee's March ruling.
Earlier this year, McAfee allowed Willis to stay on the case after several defendants took issue with Willis and Wade's "improper" relationship and moved to have her booted from the case over the alleged conflict of interest. Willis and Wade have admitted to the relationship, which they say ended last summer. They argued it had no bearing on the case.
The judge ultimately determined that their relationship did not amount to a conflict of interest but recognized that as long as the two remained on the prosecution, the "appearance of impropriety" would continue to hang over the case. He ruled that either Willis or Wade would have to step down. Wade resigned hours after the ruling.
Although McAfee chose not to disqualify Willis, he granted a request from the co-defendants to have his ruling reconsidered by the Georgia Court of Appeals. Last week, the appeals court agreed to hear the defense's case. A court date has not yet been announced.
Newsweek reached out to Willis via email for comment.
In the appeals application, Trump, Schafer and seven other defendants argued that McAfee's decision to give Willis "the option to simply remove Wade confounds logic and is contrary to Georgia law."
Their application also went a step further, arguing that Willis' disqualification would be "the minimum that must be done to remove the stain of her legally improper and plainly unethical conduct from the remainder of the case" and that the only "truly appropriate remedy" would be an entire dismissal of it.
Willis indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants for their alleged efforts to overturn the results of Georgia's 2020 election last August. Four of those defendants—bail bondsman Scott Hall and former Trump attorneys Sidney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro and Jenna Ellis—have pleaded guilty to charges. Trump and the remaining 14 co-defendants have denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty.
"President Trump looks forward to presenting interlocutory arguments to the Georgia Court of Appeals as to why the case should be dismissed and Fulton County DA Willis should be disqualified for her misconduct in this unjustified, unwarranted political persecution," Trump lawyer Steve Sadow said in a statement responding to the appeals court decision.

Former President Donald J. Trump and 18 others, including Rudolph W. Giuliani and Mark Meadows, face conspiracy charges related to attempts to overturn the state’s results and subvert the will of voters
Former President Donald J. Trump and 18 others, including some of his former lawyers and top aides, have been indicted by an Atlanta grand jury in a sweeping racketeering case focused on Mr. Trump’s efforts to reverse the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. The indictment — handed up after a single, extra-long day of testimony — is an unprecedented challenge of presidential misconduct by a local prosecutor. It brings charges against some of his most prominent advisers, including Rudolph W. Giuliani, his former personal lawyer, and Mark Meadows, who served as White House chief of staff at the time of the election. [...] The investigation was led by Fani T. Willis, the Fulton County district attorney. It focused on five actions taken by Mr. Trump or his allies in the weeks after Election Day, when Joseph R. Biden Jr. narrowly won Georgia. Those actions include phone calls that Mr. Trump made to pressure state officials to overturn the result, as well as harassment of local election workers by Trump supporters, false claims of ballot fraud, a plan by Trump allies to create a slate of bogus electors and a data breach at an elections office in rural Coffee County, Ga. [...] Kenneth Chesebro and John Eastman, architects of the plan to use fake Trump electors to circumvent the popular vote in a number of swing states, were among a number of lawyers who advised Mr. Trump who were indicted. So was Mike Roman, a former Trump campaign aide who helped coordinate the elector scheme. Jeffrey Clark, a former senior official in the Department of Justice who embraced false claims about the election and tried to embroil the department in challenging the Georgia vote, was also indicted. Other lawyers who aided Mr. Trump’s efforts who were indicted include Sidney Powell and Jenna Ellis. A number of Georgia Republicans were also indicted, including David Shafer, the former head of the state party, and Shawn Still, a state senator. Cathy Latham, a party leader in a rural county who served as one of the bogus Trump electors, was also indicted. All 19 defendants are being charged under Georgia’s racketeering statute, and each of them has at least one additional charge. Racketeering laws are often used to prosecute people involved in patterns of illegal activity, and can be useful in targeting both foot soldiers and leaders in a corrupt organization.

Trump Co-Defendant Wins 3-Month Delay in Georgia Case
A Georgia judge on Thursday granted a co-defendant in the Georgia election case that also ensnared former President Donald Trump a three-month delay in his proceedings.
“All aspects of the case” will be halted for Sen. Shawn Still, a Republican, until April 18 because he’s a member of the Georgia General Assembly, the judge wrote on Thursday. But “provisions, including initial reciprocal discovery obligations, remain in place” for the meantime, the brief order said.
“Additional extensions will only be considered upon filing of a particularized motion containing a detailed, fact-based explanation of the need for the extension including the amount of time needed,” wrote Judge Scott McAfee.
In the case, Mr. Still was charged in Fulton County, Georgia, for stating that President Trump had won the state and declaring themselves the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Mr. Still was the secretary of that meeting and is one of only three members of that group who was indicted. He faces seven counts, including the main racketeering charge as well as felony counts of impersonating a public officer, forgery, and attempting to file false documents and false statements and writings, all stemming from the elector meeting.
In arguing that his case should be delayed, Mr. Still wrote to the judge that he needs to perform his duties as a member of the state Legislature.
“All other provisions, including initial reciprocal discovery obligations, remain in place,” his filing said. “Additional extensions will only be considered upon filing of a particularized motion containing a detailed, fact-based explanation of the need for the extension, including the amount of time needed.”
He was not in public office in December 2020 when the Republican electors met. He was elected in 2022 and is serving his first term.
Previously, Mr. Still and two other electors who were charged in the case alongside the former president attempted to move their charges to a federal court but were denied in September 2023. A district judge wrote in several rulings that Mr. Still, Cathy Latham, and David Shafer could not assert that they were acting as federal officials during the time that the electors document in late 2020.
Also in September, a three-person Georgia panel didn’t recommend that Mr. Still be temporarily removed from office while the case is pending, Garrison Douglas, a spokesman for Gov. Brian Kemp, said at the time.
As is required by state law, Mr. Kemp appointed Attorney General Chris Carr, as well as Republican state Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch and Republican state House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration. That group held a closed hearing several months ago to consider whether Mr. Still should be suspended, issuing a confidential recommendation to the Republican governor.
The state constitution requires that the commission recommend and the governor suspend an official if the panel “determines that the indictment relates to and adversely affects the administration of the office of the indicted public official and that the rights and interests of the public are adversely affected thereby.”
Case Derailed?
Mr. Still’s court victory comes as Michael Roman, another co-defendant in the Trump case in Georgia, alleged in bombshell court filings that the chief prosecutor, District Attorney Fani Willis, allegedly engaged in an “improper” relationship with a top prosecutor in the case, Nathan Wade. The filings also accuse Ms. Willis of potentially violating the law when her office allegedly provided more than $650,000 to Mr. Wade’s private law firm and took Ms. Willis on vacations.
The court filing provided few details about the alleged relationship, although neither Mr. Wade nor Ms. Willis have publicly denied the claims. The Epoch Times has contacted both parties for comment.
“Willis and Wade have engaged in a personal relationship both before and after Willis appointed Wade as the special prosecutor in the instant case,” Mr. Roman’s motion stated. “Willis and Wade were romantically involved prior to Willis awarding a contract for legal services with Wade. It is not entirely clear when the relationship began, but it began while Wade was married.”
Pallavi Bailey, a spokeswoman for Ms. Willis, said her office will respond to the claims “through appropriate court filings” in the coming days.
Mr. Wade, meanwhile, was seen at his law office near Atlanta on Thursday and answered at least one question from a New York Post reporter. He was photographed allegedly carrying a pistol in his hand.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-Ga.) this week filed a criminal misconduct complaint against Ms. Willis, a Democrat, after the allegation was made against her and Mr. Wade. The new allegations suggest there is an “unlawful partisan pattern” on behalf of Ms. Willis that may “illegally politicize and weaponize her public office” against the former president and the other co-defendants, Ms. Greene wrote.
As of Friday, Ms. Willis has not publicly responded to the Republican congresswoman’s referral.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

......"Prosecutors investigating the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election results in Georgia have texts and emails that connect members of former President Donald Trump’s legal team to the January 2021 voting system breach in Coffee County, according to a CNN exclusive.
Texts and other evidence collected by investigators in the Georgia criminal probe indicate Trump’s lawyers tried to gain access to Coffee County’s voting systems so Trump’s allies could produce evidence for the unfounded theory that the election was stolen, according to CNN’s sources.
Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, is expected to present her case before a grand jury this week and to seek charges against roughly a dozen individuals, including those involved in the Coffee County voting systems breach.
“Just landed back in DC with the Mayor huge things starting to come together!” an employee from the firm Sullivan Strickler wrote in a group chat on Jan. 1, referring to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was Trump’s personal attorney. The firm was hired by Trump’s legal team to examine voting systems in Coffee County.
“Most immediately, we were just granted access — by written invitation! — to Coffee County’s systems. Yay!” the text reads.
Video footage unearthed last year showed Cathy Latham, a GOP county official who posed as a fake elector for Trump, and two others enter Coffee County’s elections office on Jan. 7, 2021, which was the same day a voting machine was breached there.
A former Trump official testified under oath during last year’s hearings by the House committee investigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, that Trump and others discussed plans to access voting systems in Georgia. At least one meeting happened in the Oval Office with Trump present, on Dec. 18, 2020, the official said.
Six days before Trump’s team gained access to the voting systems, Misty Hampton, who was then a Coffee County local elections official, wrote a “written invitation” that was sent to Trump’s lawyers, according to CNN.
Willis has been investigating whether Trump and his associates attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, where voters picked President Joe Biden by a narrow margin."
