Innocent Chukwuma: You Fulfilled Your Purpose and Died Empty, By Omano Edigheji
Innocent Chukwuma: You Fulfilled Your Purpose and Died Empty, By Omano Edigheji
Inno, in your life, you lived a life of purpose.  In the short time you lived in this world, you clearly identified your life purpose, fulfilled it and died empty, after given it your all. Inno, like Apostle Paul, you fought the good fight. You finished the course and you kept the faith. Your integrity and dedication to humanity were unquestionable. The goal of life is not to die old but to die…

Remembering Chima Ubani - 2005 - 2017
Remembering Chima Ubani – 2005 – 2017
On September 24, 2017, it would be twelve ‘good’ years since my friend Chima Ubani died. I called him my friend, even though I had met him but twelve days earlier in Kaduna, Nigeria,  at a National Parley between the Nigerian Federal Government and Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria because at that Parley we sat close to one another, and it was obvious after a few discussions that I was…

“On May 23, 1986, four young people were killed at the Ahmadu Bello University. I am saying this because somebody has said we are supporting this quit notice. Prof. Ango Abdullahi was the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University. “When those students were killed by the police, he came out and said only four students were killed. That angered Nigerians, particularly Nigerian students, and there were protests. One of the universities where that protest was very successful was the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. “The man who led that protest was the late Chima Ubani. The state did not like that there was a national protest against the killing of students. The government did not arrest people in the North; they did not arrest students who were demonstrating in the West. “The Babangida regime went for Chima Ubani and arraigned him and eight of his colleagues under a military decree that required that they be sentenced to death. I left Lagos and went to Enugu to defend those young men and we got them freed. When they returned to campus, the Vice Chancellor expelled them. Again, I went to court and got them freed. “This story is important because a Hausa Vice Chancellor invited police and they killed four young Hausa people. Nigerian students protested and an Igbo young man led that protest in the East against injustice. There are lawyers in the east, but a Yoruba lawyer from from the west went to free them. June 12: Erubami Lauds Buhari, Seeks Further Action To Strengthen Democracy
Tumblr media
Mr Mashood Erubami, the President, Nigeria Voters Assembly (VOTAS), has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari on the declaration of June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day, calling for more initiatives to strengthen democracy.     Erubami in a statement made available on Wednesday in Ibadan said more action needed to be taken to entrench the principles of June 12.     It would be recalled that the June 12, 1993 presidential election presumed to have been won by the late business mogul, Chief MKO Abiola, was annulled by then military president, Ibrahim Babangida.     Erubami described Buhari’s courage as unsurpassed among successive leaders in the country since the annulment of the June 12 election. “Buhari’s acknowledgement of the importance resident in the day was quite unexpected with late Chief MKO Abiola being a suspected financier of the military coup that ousted him from power in 1985. “This action portrays him as a man of great character and truly remarkable president of the moment who should be commended glowingly for achieving where his predecessors demonstrated very weak leadership,’’ he said. Erubami, who is also the Executive Director, Centre for Human Rights and Ethics in Development, said there was need for the president to do more to strengthen the nation’s democracy and meet the yearnings of Nigerians who risked voting for him.     He said that what endeared Buhari to most Nigerians during his era as head of state was discipline, courage and anti-corruption stance which seemed to have been undermined by the fear of being tagged a despot.     “This is the time that every discernible Nigerian expects him to stand mightily on the toes of corrupt politicians and civil servants and thereafter crush their legs for sanity to reign in Nigeria,”he said.   Erubami, a former President, Campaign for Democracy, said the Democracy Day celebration should not be limited to addresses, exhibitions and merriment, but should encourage `people’s rally’ across states to avail Nigerians opportunity to evaluate government’s programmes.     “Our security agencies assigned with electoral duties must be diligent in ensuring a violence-free atmosphere for elections.     ” They should ensure adequate protection of electoral materials and human rights of voters during and after the elections. “Election stakeholders namely, the political parties, party candidates, INEC, security agencies and the electorate must adhere to guidelines, rules and regulations set out for free, fair, free and credible elections,’’ he said. Erubami said that there was still injustice resident in the annulled June 12, 1993 election, among which was the non-declaration of the real winner of the election. “Truly, June 12 has been declared as Democracy Day and the highest national honour posthumously bestowed on Abiola, complete justice can only be done when the victor is declared as the real winner by Nwosu. “Deserving national honours should be bestowed on other democrats and political activists who waged strident struggle to get June 12 annulment reversed and recognised.     “Among them are late Kudirat Abiola, late Alfred Rewane, late Ken Saro-Wiwa, late Alex Ibru, late Beko Ransome Kuti, late Alao Aka-Bashorun, late Gani Fawehinmi, late Chima Ubani, Anthony Enahoro, Ola Oni and Baba Omojola to mention a few,’’ he said. He recommended that a notable stadium and airport be named after Abiola to complete the honours package. Read the full article

Opinion: Is Organising Protests Now Big Business? - Fredrick Nwabufo
Opinion: Is Organising Protests Now Big Business? – Fredrick Nwabufo
You must understand that some things do not happen naturally here. Protests, in particular, are not organic or “an act of God”, at least not now; there is usually a “mighty hand” in the shadows pulling the strings.
Unlike in the past, when men of good conscience like Gani Fawehinmi, Wole Soyinka, Chima Ubani, Richard Akinnola and Femi Falana, led mass movements against tyranny on principle,…

In a statement issued in Lagos, the Muslim Cleric said that Buhari’s interest lies in the progress for Nigeria and the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) on Wednesday said that it would be in the best interest of Nigeria for President Muhammadu Buhari to win in 2019.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the Muslim Cleric said that Buhari’s interest lies in the progress for Nigeria and the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
Akintola reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the Buhari led administration, saying that it has the political will to fight corruption and to punish offenders.
“Ex-governors and powerful politicians are being sent to jail for the first time in the history of this country. Huge amounts are also being recovered. It is a record performance,” he said.
According to the MURIC director, the organisation’s stand is not about any close relationship or acquaintance, but about the president’s integrity.
“We marvel at his prudence, his simplicity and his altruism. He is simply a living legend. These are the qualities which we cherish in Buhari.
“His political party does not matter to us. Some Nigerians are not being honest. All of us have been complaining for a long time that the problem with Nigeria is leadership. We accused our leaders of greed, avarice and selfishness.
“We have been complaining for long that corrupt leaders always got away with their loot. Nobody ever questioned anyone. But today we have a president to whom transparency, probity and accountability are uppermost.
“Our support for this administration is driven by patriotism and good governance but not based on religion.
“If the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who is a Christian clergy contests election tomorrow we will support him because he shares the same vision with the President.
“Wole Soyinka and Femi Falana are Christians. We will not hesitate to rally behind them tomorrow if they vie for leadership positions.
“We would have given all our energy to support Tai Solarin, Dr. Beko Ransom Kuti, Chima Ubani and Ken Sabro Wiwa who were all Christians had they contested for the post of president in their life time.
“As religious leaders, we are speaking up to guide politicians because things may go wrong if we keep quiet, we will never give up on Nigeria. We will never surrender this country to kleptomaniacs and blood merchants no matter the amount of blackmail.
“This struggle is towards a better future for Nigerian youth, Nigerian children and generations yet unborn. Posterity will judge us,” he said.
The director cited Qur’an 8:25 which condemns docility, encourages Muslims to be proactive and warns that those who fail to speak up when necessary may eventually become victims of the evil even if they are innocent.
He also urged Muslims not to shy away from politics, saying that politics determines whether the roads will be good or not.
“Politics determines whether or not we will have stable power supply, a reliable public transport system and good public health delivery package,” he said.
He lamented that some politicians are earning N29 million monthly while poor workers are not even getting N18,000 minimum wage as and when due.
“The International Monetary Fund revealed in 1999 that one per cent of our population enjoys 85 per cent of the wealth, leaving the remaining 99 per cent of the population to struggle before having access to the remaining 15 per cent of Nigeria’s wealth.
“That is why facilities cannot go round. That is why we have falling school walls. That is why public hospitals are glorified mortuaries.
“The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria said last week that only 350 Nigerians are responsible for more than 80 per cent of the N5.4 trillion debt portfolio of the company,” he further said.
Akintola however advised Muslims to wake up to the challenge of politics, to speak up and be proactive.
“ We charge Muslims to play the role that Allah has instructed them to play and to desist from abdicating their social responsibilities.
“We urge the civil society to stand up to be counted in the struggle to free Nigeria from the clutches of the tiny cabal,” he added.
