No Shadow Without Light - Ch2
Chapter Two: New Friends
Chapter One
Summary: Honoria makes a new friend while her relationship with Sebastian grows more complicated. Quidditch tryouts loom, and the answers to Anne’s curse may lie within reach.
Word count: 1.9k
Warnings: None
Honoria opened her mouth to ask what their defense against the dark arts teacher wanted, but Sebastian turned on his heel and walked on. “Let’s go.”
She had to trot to keep up with his long strides. “Is anything the matter?”
“Tryouts went well, I take it?” Sebastian didn’t look at her, and his voice held that same clipped edge.
“What’s with that tone?” She couldn’t keep the indignation from her own voice.
“What tone?”
Honoria first realized that her new Ravenclaw “friends” were going to be problem when she was on her way to the library. Her arms were laden with several books, and she had almost made it to the library door when the Ravenclaw girls appeared. One was tall and lanky, with dirty blond hair. The other was shorter, round, with hair as black as the animal of her house. Honoria vaguely knew them; they were in the year above her and were the same girls she and Poppy had seen on the Hogwarts Express.
Instead of walking past her, the girls split to walk on each side of Honoria, winging her shoulders with their own as they shoved to get past. The books tumbled from her hands and Honoria stopped with a sigh. She glanced over her shoulder at the girls. The tall one laughed, the shorter one just sneered at her. Saying nothing, Honoria bent down to retrieve her books.
“Are you all right? Here, let me help.”
Honoria didn’t recognize the voice, and looked up to find a pair of bright blue eyes looking at her. They belonged to a Hufflepuff boy Honoria had not met properly, but she recognized his messy blonde curls and freckled cheeks. He was a fellow Hufflepuff in the year above her. Reeves, she’d hear him called.
“Thank you.”
“I’m Oliver, by the way. Oliver Reeves.”
“Honoria Dashwood.”
“Of course,” said Oliver, pink blooming beneath his freckles. “Everyone know the Hero of Hogwarts.”
“Just Honoria is fine.”
“What did you do to get on Millicent and Cynthia’s bad side?” Oliver asked, looking at the retreating Ravenclaws.
“Took a breath, I suppose,” said Honoria with a shrug. “I have too much studying to do to care, to be honest.”
“I’m on my way to the library, too. Shall we?”
Oliver gestured toward the door and fell into step beside her. “Great news about Quidditch this year. Tryouts are next week - are you going?”
“I am, actually. I’ve never played, but I’m rather good on a broom.”
Oliver smiled. “Yes, I think we’ve all heard Imelda’s frustrations at you beating her times last year.”
That earned a grin from Honoria. “Just barely.”
“That’s all it takes.” Oliver pushed open the library door, waiting for Honoria to go through first. “See you later, yeah?”
Honoria only nodded in response as Oliver made his way through the bookshelves. She found a free table that afforded a little privacy. As she spread out her books, she noted the butterflies in her stomach that had accompanied her walk with Oliver. Those left her feeling very confused, indeed.
After a few hours studying for her real classes, Honoria turned her attention to what she had truly come to the library for: ancient magic. In the chaos of Ranrok’s threat last year, she hadn’t been able to pursue whether ancient magic could cure Anne Sallow’s curse. Honoria was certain it could, though not in the way Isidora Morganach might have tried. She had thought about it all summer, and Honoria was convinced that Rookwood had used some kind of corrupted ancient magic from the repository underneath Rookwood castle. In turn, surely the pure ancient magic that she could wield was the key to breaking it.
But figuring out how to do that, without going down the same path as Isidora, was going to be a challenge. She planned to ask the keepers, but at the moment their portraits were empty and she didn’t have time to waste. So she would scour the library, including the restricted section, for even the smallest reference to ancient magic.
A History of Rare Magics looked promising, and Honoria was so intent on the pages she skimmed that she didn’t hear footsteps behind her. Stifling a yelp at the hand on her shoulder, Honoria whirled around to see Sebastian behind her.
“What are you so engrossed in?” He asked, wearing that crooked smile she loved so much.
Honoria put a hand over her heart. “Just some research for history of magic, nothing exciting.”
She had decided early on that she wasn’t going to tell Sebastian what she was working on. It wouldn’t do to get his hopes up and then disappoint him if she couldn’t cure Anne.
He took the words at face value. “If you say so. I’ve just come from double potions. Thought it would be good to get some peace and quiet with a book for a while.”
They went back to Honoria’s table, but the way Sebastian was drumming his fingers on the top of his book suggested he wasn’t really interested in reading.
“Have you heard from Anne at all?” Honoria asked quietly. She still skimmed the pages of the book, looking for words relevant to her search.
“No. She’s written Ominis, so I know that she’s all right. She still doesn’t want to see me.” Honoria’s heart broke at his downtrodden voice.
“I’m sure she needs time, Sebastian. You can’t take back what happened, even if you have learned your lesson.”
“I know that.” Was he angry or sad? She couldn’t tell. “I will figure out how to cure her. Then maybe I can make her understand why I did what I did.”
Honoria barely heard him. Her attention was on the book. There it was. The reference she had been searching for, the one thing that might help her unlock the mystery of Anne’s curse. But she needed to talk to the Keepers.
“Honoria? Are you listening to me?”
Honoria snapped her book shut. “Sorry, Sebastian, I have to go.”
“You’re blowing me off for history of magic?”
“I’m sorry, Sebastian, but it’s important. I’ll talk to you later.”
Honoria could feel his stare boring into her as she gathered her books and rushed for the door.
The map chamber was empty. Honoria tried waiting, calling for the Keepers by name, and knocking on the portrait frames. She even fooled around with the ancient magic wand, hoping they might sense her mischief and come to scold her. Any attention would be welcome if she could just get them to speak with her.
Two hours later, nothing had worked and she risked missing out on dinner in the Great Hall. Heaving a sigh, she made her way up the stairs, all the while thinking of how she might contact the Keepers.
At the Hufflepuff table, she found herself sandwiched between Poppy and Adelaide, while Oliver had managed to sit opposite her with his own seventh year friends. Even from the other end of the Great Hall, she caught Sebastian looking at her, his face unreadable.
He probably thought she didn’t care about Anne anymore. That she had just moved on after dealing with Ranrok. Was he angry that she had yet to find a way to help his sister, that she wasn’t doing more to try and heal the rift between them?
With NEWT classes keeping them busy, it was hard enough finding time for friends. But if she was going to figure out how to use ancient magic to end Anne’s curse, it would take most of her free time. She would just have to hope that when Sebastian knew *why she was so busy, he would forgive her for seeming distant.
Quidditch tryouts were even more hectic than Honoria expected. After the sport had been canceled last year, everyone wanted to play. And though there were 3 chasers needed, the most of any position on the team, she had plenty of competition.
On her way down the pitch, where the other team hopefuls were gathering around the captain, she looked for Oliver. Guilt pricked at her for the thought, but she reminded herself that Sebastian hadn’t spoken to her about… whatever their relationship was. Maybe a summer apart had given him time to realize he didn’t want to be anything more than friends.
Honoria had to admit to herself that maybe she just enjoyed the attention. A kind smile from a handsome boy without thoughts of dying sisters or ancient magic to cast a shadow.
But there was no sign of the blonde curls or blue eyes she sought. Until she reached the rest of the Hufflepuff team, and got her first look at their Quidditch captain. He was all blonde curls and blue eyes and a smile that widened when he saw Honoria appear. Because of course he was.
Tryouts consisted of drills for each of the positions. For chasers, that meant practicing a few passes and making ten shots at the goals. They would be against the team’s current keeper, Captain Reeves, so he could assess their talent first hand.
Honoria scored 7 of the 10 shots she made. The other three were narrow misses, with Oliver only just managing to knock the quaffle away in time. “You’re definitely looking at a spot on the team. A little more practice and you might be unstoppable,” he told her.
Honoria stayed for the rest of the day, scoping out the competition and picking up pointers from those with more experience with the game. It was late in the afternoon when Oliver dismissed them, promising to let them know the results soon.
“Coming back to the common room?” Someone asked him.
He pointed to the wooden box at his feet. “Just need to take the equipment chest back.”
“I’ll give you a hand,” Honoria volunteered. She almost regretted it. She only wanted to be nice.
Oliver flashed her his charming smile, and a flutter of butterflies returned to her stomach. But being around him was easier with the chest between them, carrying it up to Kogawa’s office.
Out of breath, they each sat their end down and straightened. Turning to each other to say thanks, there were now mere inches between them. Startled by the revelation, Oliver and Honoria both froze, looking awkwardly into each other’s eyes.
Oliver finally broke the silence. “I’ll post the roster in the common room tonight. I don’t think it will take long to make my decisions.”
“Right,” said Honoria, stumbling over the word. “Can’t wait.”
“Sorry to interrupt.” Sebastian’s tight voice cut through the air. His jaw was clenched, and he had fixed Oliver with a narrow stare. “Honoria, professor Hecat is asking to see us.”
Oliver was cool in the face of Sebastian’s ire. “We just finished up, actually. See you later, Honoria.”
Honoria scoffed. “Fine. Are you at least going to tell me why we’re being summoned by Professor Hecat?”
“Hecat wants to put on a dueling demonstration for the new first years. Thought we’d be a good choice to show off. We’re to go to her office for the details.”
A duel with Sebastian? Having an excuse to decimate him in front of an audience again was incredibly appealing right now. “Sounds fantastic,” she snapped.

The Novel Neighbor is not just a bookstore. In addition to author events, they host birthday parties, summer camps, bookstore yoga, and adult classes (like continuing ed, but sexier), among other things (sorry Amanda!).

  Chapter III [47:06]
In Which We Move From Books to Books, Talk About Hybridity, and We Finally Meet a Bookseller Who Has Read Harry Potter
Book Description Guaranteed to Get You Reading
Anything meets anything. NOT "It's the next" NOT EVERYTHING IS THE NEXT HUNGER GAMES, Y'ALL. Hybridity.
Holland loved a book that was Comic Con meets The Help. FYI, it's called The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson.
Emma recommends Hawkeye by Matt Friction. It's Buffy meets Veronica Mars. Which apparently is listed on Emma's shelf talker. But, like, who reads those?
Desert Island Pick
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Emma hasn't finished The Secret Garden, but The Little Princess might be Emma's Desert Island pick. That said, she hearts Mandy by Julie Andrews, which is kinda the same thing, so that counts, right?
Station Eleven Picks
Practical: anything from the Did you Know shelf, such as How to Stay Alive in the Woods: A Complete Guide to Food, Shelter and Self-Preservation Anywhere by Bradford Angier
Political: Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard
Wild Pick
The Amazing Adventures of a Nobody and The Kindness Diaries: One Man's Quest to Ignite Goodwill and Transform Lives Around the World by Leon Logothetis
Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama
Bookseller Confession
Holland hated Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff and The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney. Also, she never read Catcher in the Rye, which both Kim and Emma are totally okay with. Emma says you should skip Catcher and read Franny and Zooey.
Shout out to a bookseller who has actually read Harry Potter.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 3/4/2019
Good MORNING  #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Monday 4th March 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT) or Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) OR by purchasing by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
AG: KEEP TIPS COMING – Attorney General Dale Marshall is urging Barbadians not to be quiet on crime and violence, as no corner of the island is off limits to the scourge. He made the plea on Saturday night during a cocktail reception to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Crime Stoppers Barbados at the Southern Palm Beach Club in St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church. Pointing out that the longest journey on the island, from South Point in St Philip to North Point, St Lucy, took under an hour, Marshall contended that all Barbadians were at “risk” and therefore did not have the luxury of saying that crime did not or would not affect their community. Making reference to Bathsheba in his St Joseph constituency, he revealed that the once peaceful village was also reeling from the upsurge of violent crime as “young men are threatening law-abiding neighbours with guns”. “So when you think that what confronts us today is limited only to inner City neighbourhoods like Chapman Lane and the New Orleans, it only takes a Bathsheba bus to get from Town to the East Coast of our country,” Marshall said. (DN)
SHAKE UP COMING – Barbados’ education system is in for a major shake-up. Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw made this promise yesterday as she acknowledged that too many children were leaving school without adequate literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to function effectively in the workplace. She said these shortcomings were manifesting themselves in students from the primary level, yet not enough was done through the years to deal with these problems at that early stage. So the children go through secondary school and leave without these basic deficiencies addressed. “This can no longer go on,” said Bradshaw, as she explained that based on the ministry’s files, this phenomenon was recognised yet little was done in the past decade to effectively address it. The St Michael South East representative declared that under her watch the changes necessary to rectify this trend must begin in order to look after the welfare of the children and Barbados’ future. (DN)
CLEAN UP AT THREE SCHOOLS – New-look surroundings will greet teachers and pupils of the Ann Hill, Irving Wilson and Wilkie Cumberbatch schools when they reopen today. Ann Hill School, on Pine Plantation Road, St Michael, was closed last week for emergency remedial work on the roof and ceiling, while Irving Wilson and Wilkie Cumberbatch schools, also in the Pine, were shut on Friday evening to allow for a clean-up. Yesterday, under the watchful eye of Minister of Environment Trevor Prescod, general manager of the National Conservation Commission (NCC), Keith Neblett, and other NCC officials, heavy-duty equipment was brought in to clear the overgrown bush, which had been causing skin irritation problems for students and teachers. “The Ministry of the Environment, through its agency, the NCC, has entered into a contract with a company in order to get this work done within a short space of time. We have to complete this work by Sunday evening, which is the cleaning of the entire area,” Prescod said.  (DN)
FROM BOTTOM TO BOULEVARD – Move over Waterford Bottom; make way for Waterford Boulevard. The familiar and busy artery into Bridgetown, one of the favourite spots for illegal dumpers, is being given a facelift. And with more improvements to come, Minister of Environment and National Beautification Trevor Prescod said the days of rusting fridges, mattresses and smelly bags of garbage should be over as people viewed the area in a new light. He added he believed the beautified area would be, in itself, enough deterrent to would-be illegal dumpers. “People treat the environment the same way you treat them. I am telling you what we intend to do in Waterford Bottom, you would not see that because we are going to transform it into a boulevard. Nobody would do the things on a boulevard that they would do in a bottom. So Waterford Bottom would be treated according to how people perceive it. “And when we transform it into a boulevard, they would treat it how they normally treat a boulevard.” (DN)
NO MEASLES OUTBREAK IN BARBADOS - Contrary to a report carried elsewhere in the media on Friday, March 1, the public is advised that Barbados is not experiencing an outbreak of measles. According to Senior Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Karen Broome, Barbados has not documented a case of measles since 1990. Outbreaks of measles continue to be reported in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Americas. (BT)
FEELING ‘LEFT BEHIND’ – THE MAJOR GROUP in Barbados representing the disabled is feeling decidedly left behind. This, said president of the Barbados Council for the Disabled, Maria Holder-Small, despite the island’s signing on to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and its ratification of the Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities. The agenda pledges that “no one will be left behind”. Holder-Small said yesterday: “Over the past four years I have been making endless pleas, and so have many of my predecessors, for society to pay attention to the continued exclusion of persons with disabilities. We have seen some successes, but more often than not our inclusion has often been seen as an afterthought. “Our community is indeed saddened when policy-makers continue to make the same mistakes by not creating that inclusion and equality for persons with disabilities. It is even sadder when a building earmarked for the National Disabilities Unit could be simply given to another department, which leaves the present unit still located up two flights of stairs, totally inaccessible to persons with disabilities,” she lamented.  (DN)
GOVERNMENT TO TACKLE POVERTY -  Government is taking steps to identify the most vulnerable in Barbadian society to ensure that they receive the help they need. Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Cynthia Forde, made the announcement on Wednesday as she delivered the feature address at the opening of the National Strategic Consultation on the Social Response to Crime in Barbados. Minister Forde told the audience that her Ministry had been mandated by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley to undertake a household rapid poverty assessment aimed at “gathering information on the living conditions of the poor and vulnerable in society and ranking them according to the most needy, in order to offer them the necessary assistance”. She said this survey would complement other initiatives being undertaken by the Ministry and would also inform the further development of social policies as Government pursued its goal of a society with opportunities for all. The Minister of People Empowerment highlighted two projects within the Ministry targeted at inter-generational poverty. These projects, one funded by the Barbados Government and the other funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Government of China, aim to “identify, stabilize, enable and empower the most vulnerable in society”. Minister Forde stated: “The intent is to ensure that such persons are removed from abject poverty to become self-employed and employers rather than employees.” Noting that “an unprecedented period of change” was taking place in Barbadian society, she said that in response there was a need for mechanisms to be developed, which would engage the perpetrators of crime, regardless of their age, status and gender. The Minister submitted that there was a need for a cohesive, holistic, innovative, integrated approach to the crime challenge in Barbados. She told participants: “For this goal to be realized, the crime preventive measures which you recommend must, of necessity, address not only economic development, but good governance and the rule of law.” The consultation, which aimed to develop an integrated social response plan, brought together representatives from the public and private sectors, the faith-based community, non-governmental organizations, service clubs and the media. (BT))
WANTED: KAREEM O’BRIAN CLARKE – The Royal Barbados Police Force is seeking the assistance of the public in locating a wanted man.  He is 19-year-old Kareem O’Brian Clarke who goes by the alias “Frog”; whose last known address is Johnson Road, Workmans, St. George. He is wanted for questioning in connection with a serious criminal matter. Clarke is approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a dark complexion, and a slim build. He has average eyes, a short bulbous nose, average ears and thick lips and acne on his face. Clarke is advised that he can present himself to the Oistins Police Station, Oistins, Christ Church accompanied by an attorney-at-law of his choice. Any person, who may know the whereabouts of Kareem O’Brian Clarke, is asked to contact the Oistins Police Station at 418-2612 or 418-2606, Police Emergency at 211, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477), or the nearest police station. The public is reminded that it is a serious offence to harbour or assist wanted persons; any person caught committing this offence can be prosecuted. (DN)
BCA BEHIND CAMERON – The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) will definitely be coming to the crease for incumbents Dave Cameron and Emmanuel Nanthan to continue to lead Cricket West Indies (CWI).  BCA president Conde Riley made the revelation in an interview with NATIONSPORT yesterday. Riley also no-balled charges that the BCA didn’t allow Cameron’s presidential opponent Ricky Skerritt and his vice-president running mate, Dr Kishore Shallow, to address its members in the lead-up to the CWI’s electoral nomination process. In defending the BCA’s position, Riley said shortly after receiving the letter from Skerritt and Shallow, a vote was taken at the association’s monthly meeting on February 12 to support Cameron and Nanthan in their bid to be re-elected as president and vice-president, respectively, for another two-year term. “Once the board decided that they were supporting the incumbents, that was it. You can’t come out and go against something that has been agreed on a vote by the full BCA board,” said Riley while making it abundantly clear that it was a board decision and not a personal one. (DN)
HAYLEY MOVES UP TO CAPTAIN – Exciting West Indies’ all-rounder Hayley Matthews has been elevated to the captaincy of the Barbados women’s team for the first time. Matthews, who is the vice-captain of the West Indies side, takes over from the experienced seamer Shakera Selman for the upcoming Regional Women’s Super50 and Twenty20 Blaze tournaments in Guyana, from March 14 to April 4. Apart from Matthews and Selman, there are four other West Indies players in the 14-member squad. They are explosive all-rounder Deandra Dottin, fiery fast bowler Shamilia Connell and the Knight twin sisters, Kycia and Kyshonna, who is making a return after undergoing leg surgery. In an interview yesterday, head coach Ezra Moseley told NATIONSPORT that once the conditions in Guyana were good for cricket and the tournament was not affected by rain, he expected Barbados, with six Windies players, to emerge champions. (DN)
GOLD CUP UPSET - Horse number 1 Celestial Storm produced a stunning upset at odds of 14 to 1 to win the 38th running of the Sandy Lane Gold Cup in front a large crowd at the Garrison Savannah this evening. The 2018 champion jockey Rasheed Hughes who was tasting his first win in the Gold Cup settled the grey five-year-old mare in the centre of the pack behind pacesetters Infrared and Night Prowler. Then the mare produced a blistering turn of foot in the final furlong to overtake the pacesetters stopping the clock in a quick 149.4 to win her first nine-furlong race in the process. Infrared, who had won this year’s Coolmore Home of Champion Stakes defeating Celestial Storm, ran on to be second improving from his third place last year. Winning trainer Roger Parravicino who won the Sandy Spa Sprint with Celestial Storm last year celebrated his first win in the Caribbean's most prestigious race. It was a race Roger would never forget anytime soon as the smart mare was owned by his late father Nick, who passed away last year. The Bills Inc.-owned locally bred Brave Star had his record of seven wins and three second places from ten starts broken when he finished fourth. But this was no disgrace as it was the first time he was running with the top rated horses. Jalon Samuel, the Sandy Lane Gold Cup winning jockey for the last three years, had to settle for third this year with his mount Night Prowler. The forecast paid $89.90, trifecta $581 .10, superfecta 1-4-5-6 $4,368.40. The first prize winner received $133, 750. Trainers Victor Cheeseman and Liz Deane were the most successful on the day winning three races. Eleven different jockeys won on the 11-race card. Next race day will be March 16th. (BT)
LISA IS LIVING HER BEST LIFE – Lisa Ruck loves travelling, teaching and her hometown Barbados. And she is looking to one day combine those loves and create her dream job. She’s a 36-year old bright and bubbly Bajan girl living her absolute best life in Rome for the last eight years.  “I love my job; it’s perfect. I did a short course in teaching English as a second language, so now I teach legal English and business English in Rome. I still do one or two business courses but at my pleasure,” she said proudly. However, when she left Barbados, teaching was not the plan. Interior design was her focus. “I was a primary school teacher in Barbados. And I always wanted to study interior design. I told myself I needed to take the chance now and go before I had more responsibilities and things tying me down. I decided to do a master’s in interior design in Italy,” she explained. And she ended up staying in the country. But Lisa couldn’t stay away from the classroom for long. The passion for teaching was too strong. “I did some internships while I was there in interior design but the market was so saturated. But in Rome there’s such a demand for English speaking teachers, so it made more sense to go back into the classroom. I missed the classroom a lot as well,” she said with a laugh. And she also speaks Italian fluently now.  (DN)

Art F City: This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Have Your Cake & Smash It Too
Video still from Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw’s piece for the show “Cake Hole” at Mrs. We can’t wait to see the context for this!
Welcome to the new normal. We at AFC have noticed a decline in artistic output from Brooklyn’s DIY scene as of late, while commercial galleries and institutions in Manhattan (and a few in Queens) have been gearing-up for battle mode with politically-charged programming. We’re hoping this is because everyone in Brooklyn is too busy thinking about resistance, and not because they’ve fled the country.
Tuesday night, The New School is hosting a talk about female bodies online, and Wednesday, the New Museum is opening a massive Raymond Pettibon show. After checking it out, head down the block to ICP, where curators will be discussing the loaded Perpetual Revolution: The Image and Social Change. More talks will come Thursday, such as the Brooklyn Museum’s call to defend immigrants and the Flux Factory/ABC No Rio potluck/opening/discussion about artists’ mutual aid in times like these. Friday night, take a break from political angst to get lost in the dreamy paintings of Jordan Kasey at Nicelle Beauchene, or the likely dreamier office set E.S.P. TV has staged at Pioneer Works. The weekend brings more great art and opportunities for creative resistance: be sure to check out the Queens Museum’s event to build climate change resistance coalitions between artists and activists.

On Feminism, Our Bodies Online
If you’re a cyberfeminist who’s ever been banned from Instagram, or anyone who has run in the art-school circles of Tumblr, this talk’s for you. Join female net artists for a conversation “on how women wield images of their bodies online as a tool of power and/or as sexual objectification, exploring the question of who is allowed to use their body in this way.” That’s a loaded question, one that’s certainly divided many feminists of different schools of thought. This ought to get juicy.

Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work
Fans of Raymond Pettibon, rejoice! Curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari and Massimiliano Gioni, this will be the first major museum retrospective dedicated to artist who defined so much of punk’s visual culture. For decades, Pettibon has caricatured American culture, from its naive idealism to counterculture rebellions to the fucked-up mess that is today. Hundreds of pieces spanning the artist’s career will be here, as will a fully-illustrated catalog. To any secret admirers out there, that’s a dream Valentine’s Day gift.

Curators' Talk: Perpetual Revolution; The Image and Social Change
ICP’s exhibition Perpetual Revolution: The Image and Social Change has been generating quite a bit of buzz in our circles due to its timely focus on imaging political issues from protests to climate change. Opinions seem to be mixed about the show, but that should make this talk even more compelling. I’m particularly interested in the collection “The Right-Wing Fringe and the 2016 Election.”

Defending Immigrant Rights: A Brooklyn Call to Action
The Brooklyn Museum is partnering with the Brooklyn Community Foundation to present this meeting about the crisis wrought by Trump’s terrible immigration policies. This is probably one of the most important things you could be doing in a museum this week.
With Linda Sarsour, Arab American Association of New York; Murad Awawdeh, New York Immigration Coalition; Carl Lipscombe, Black Alliance for Just Immigration; Lisa Schreibersdorf, Brooklyn Defenders Services; and Nayim Islam, DRUM/Desis Rising Up and Moving. Moderated by Cecilia Clarke, President and CEO of Brooklyn Community Foundation. Panelists represent community-based organizations funded through the foundation’s newly established Immigrant Rights Fund. Presented in collaboration with the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
Flux Factory

Against Competition/Towards Mutual Aid
Legendary L.E.S. punk cultural center ABC No Rio is in exile while their structurally unsound former home is rebuilt. Fortunately, Long Island City’s Flux Factory is hosting events co-presented by the Manhattan institution while it’s temporarily homeless. I can’t think of a better working arrangement for two art spaces to present this show.
The premise of  Against Competition/Towards Mutual Aid is that artists need to work together (in many different senses) rather than competing, as the capitalist system would have us believe. This exhibition is the result of collaborations that involved idea, tool, or skill sharing across disciplines. The opening features a potluck and the panel discussion Artist as Ally.
Artists: Razan AlSalah, Rachel Brown, Lee Brozgol, Kerry Cox, Elizabeth Demaray, Rachel Haberstroh, Robert Hieger, Rachel Hillery, Christopher Lin, Jemila MacEwan, Firoz Mahmud, Liz Naiden, Anatole Hocek, Patrícia Silva, Alex Strada, Julieta Triangular, Moira Williams, Ariel Zakarison, Joanie Fritz Zosike.
This project is organized by ABC No Rio Visual Arts Collective members Vandana Jain, Mike Estabrook, Brian George, and Steven Englander, and Flux Factory Artists-In-Residence Eleni Theodora Zaharopoulos and Christina Freeman.

Raúl De Nieves & Colin Self : The Fool
Raúl De Nieves and Colin Self are two of New York’s best genre and gender bending visual artists. I can only imagine what this performance—a four-part chamber opera—is going to look like. Both artists’ practices flirt with fashion, music, drag, and a variety of media and aesthetics. An opera sounds like the perfect synthesis of all of the above.
Starring Colin Self as the Old Woman, Raúl De Nieves as The Fool and the Dog, Alexandra Drewchin as the Child, and Mehron Abdollmohammadi as the Mother. Organized by Matthew Lyons.

Jordan Kasey: Exoplanet
I’ve been fortunate enough to have spent a lot of time looking at Jordan Kasey’s work. In Baltimore, I’ve lived close to several of her murals, and I’ve always found them haunting. Her paintings have an eerie quality—forms are rendered with a variety of individual spatial logics, meaning figures or objects might pop out from the surface or float in ambiguous planes. They’re the type of painting that remind me why seeing the medium IRL will never be obsolete.
Pioneer Works

E.S.P. TV: WORK
E.S.P. TV, the collaborative mobile television program from Scott Kiernan and Victoria Keddie, is giving Pioneer Works a screen-ready makeover. They’ve relocated all of the art space’s offices and workers to the main gallery, where the organization’s 9-5 work will take place in a film set version of their office. This includes bluescreens and other interventions that sound like the space will feel a bit like a soap opera. Knowing what the nonprofit art world is like, we’re expecting this to be pretty entertaining.

Bjarne Melgaard & Bjørg: The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment
Who knows what to expect from this show? Gavin Brown’s website features a flyer promising a “new streetwear collection” and “sex booths”, along with this video, which compels us to “ESCAPE THE ENDLESS OPTIMISTIC SPIRIT” and CGI porn of Jar-Jar Binks fucking Queen Amidala (or perhaps one of her lookalike bodyguards?) Whatever this exhibition is going to look like, we’re prepared for a healthy dose of Melgaard’s dark comedic sensibility. Maybe some good-old-fashioned gallows humor is just what we need.

Vita Eruhimovitz: Alternative Facts
What a well-named exhibition! The subjectivity of reality has never been a more hot-button issue, and Eruhimovitz’s work fits nicely into the discourse of false promises. Her sculptures and multi-media pieces address synthetic landscapes, idealized lifestyle branding, and pastoral romanticism in consumer culture. Appropriately, in a month when our EPA has been gutted, these fantasies and objects of desire speak “to the beauty of technological advance and toxic waste.”

Cake Hole
The event description here features a surprisingly interesting history of cakes in western civilization from Jennifer Coates. If that’s any indication, a show all about cakes might be as smart as it is fun-sounding. Mostly, we’re looking forward to seeing whatever perpetual AFC favs Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw have cooked up. They never disappoint.

Care as Culture: Artists, Activists and Scientists Build Coalitions to Resist Climate Change
Facilitated through Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ “Peace Table,” this discussion invites artists and activists to share strategies for combating the ever-worsening threat of climate change. This will kick-off with case studies from the field. Now that we basically have to operate on the assumption that the federal government is doing the opposite of preventing the looming disaster, it’s up to us plebes to figure something out.
Presenters include Newton Harrison, The Natural History Museum, Natalie Jeremijenko, and Mary Mattingly. Respondents include Carol Becker, Francesco Fiondella, Allan Frei, Hope Ginsburg, Alicia Grullon, Amy Lipton, Lisa Marshall, Jennifer McGregor, Aviva Rahmani, Jason Smerdon, Stephanie Wakefield, and Marina Zurkow.

A Room Behind A Room: Recent Trends in Video Art
Curated by Lenore Malen, this show surveys diverse approaches to using ever-more accessible digital video techniques. This includes Jun Hee Mun’s experiments with Freeware, and a piece from Ingrid Zhuang (pictured) in which the artist’s severed body navigates a video-gamescape of mutant genetically engineered foods.
Artists: Sarah Lasley, Jung Hee Mun, Alona Weiss, Ingrid Zhuang.
Leslie Heller is also opening two other exhibitions that night: Monika Zarzeczna’s Recent Sculptures in the front gallery and Struck Off Center, curated by Brigitte Mulholland in the workspace. That show includes work by Jeff Fichera, Dan Gratz, Emily Hass, Clinton King, Raphael Zollinger, Vidvuds Zvedris
