Hey Steven, maybe you can help me with something I'm trying to articulate, but I'm not even sure is accurate, just seems like something I've observed, but I could be wrong.
So I've often heard about how the STEM fields are becoming more and more prioritized over the humanities in colleges, and that seems broadly true to me (though there's also other stuff that gets promoted over the humanities like business and law, it feels, though they might qualify as humanities, I don't know), and yet, in my opinion, it seems too broad, cause it seems less STEM and more TE, with the S and M put next to the humanities as fields you shouldn't bother with if you want a profitable career.
Technology and Engineering, it seems to me, are boosted over all else. I don't exactly see people saying get a job as an astronomer or a physicist or a biologist or a mathematician unless it's specifically to "contribute towards society in a profitable way (like, I hear geologists can get employed to help find new sources of fossil fuels, for example)," but meanwhile I hear people say, "just learn to code!" or get a degree in some engineering field or something like that. Basically, a focus on fields that contribute directly to someone making a profit instead of enriching society through the arts or through new discoveries. I don't know if what I said made any sense but I wonder your thoughts on all of it.
(Business I grant you, although a lot of that is due to employers subsidizing MBAs for their white collar workers. However, while Law used to be quite profitable for both parties, it's been in a bit of a demographic crisis for a few years now due to the fact that the number of legal jobs that pay well enough to afford law school tuition have declined massively and the number of people applying to law schools started to nosedive as well. Paul Campos, my colleague at Lawyers, Guns, and Money, has been on that beat for years.)
With regards to STEM, I think it is true that these things are pushed only in so far as they can be harnessed to the generation of profit. Technology and Engineering we agree on; these workers are highly prized by existing industries, they lend themselves well to both start-ups and spin-offs, and their work can be patented in ways that generate profit for both corporations and the university.
However, when it comes to Science, you need to remember that the "S" includes both applied and theoretical sides - and applied sciences look a lot like Technology and Engineering when it comes to industry demand for skilled workers, the potential for start-ups and spin-offs, and the profitability of patents. Think bio-medical, think bio-chemical, think Pharma, think materials and nano-tech and on and on. However, you are quite right when it comes to the theoretical sciences; you do that for the love of the game.
It is true that Mathematics is the most abstract, the most academic, and the hardest to monetize in the ways described above. However, as I learned from my union colleague who was in the Math department (who ironically went on to a career as a union organizer rather than attempt a career as a mathematician), there is one avenue for money-making with a Mathematics degree:
Finance.
I don't know whether this is still as true as when I was in grad school, but it used to be that Wall Street would throw very handsome salaries indeed at anyone with quant skills from any branch of STEM. (In fact, I remember complaints from some Engineering professors that industries that actually make stuff couldn't get enough engineers because they could make more money working for a hedge fund than actually engineering things.)

Let’s talk about life in New Rome
To start off, how many people actually live in the town?
In Son of Neptune, the number of people living in New Rome is said to be about three hundred. Now if we add the two hundred in Camp Jupiter, that leaves approximately 500 demigods. I doubt monsters, nymphs, and satyrs are included in that number, so we could probably round that out to 800 or so.
[The number is significantly lessby the end of Tyrant’s Tomb. Many veterans are said to have died. The legion has lost many demigods. ]
With this in mind, we have to assume that New Rome University is very small, likely between 20-50 students. We know from Percy they offer a four-year course, so that means about a dozen students (or less) are admitted to the college every year.
As far as I can tell, all students get into the university on a scholarship and there is no tuition. This is partly because Hazel seems very casual about admissions into the college and because of Percy’s comments in The Hidden Oracle.
“I’ve been guaranteed admission with a full scholarship to New Rome University, but they’re still requiring me to pass all my high school courses and score well on the SAT. Can you believe that? Not to mention I have to pass the DSTOMP.”
From this comment, I suspect Percy has given privileges equivalent of a legionaire who’s finished their ten-years of service. Basically like "you saved the world so that counts".
It’s unknown if they offer any post-graduate degrees, or if students go to Berkeley after that. I suspect with the close ties between the universities, as mentioned by Annabeth, the latter is more likely. However, demigod post-grad students probably do tutor classes at NRU like at other universities.
Looking at actual real-world universities. It’s more than likely NRU offers a liberal arts degree (Bachelor of Arts). One that is able to be modified for the individual student. This is further proven by the fact there is a music and poetry analysis section in the DSTOMP exam.
Percy mentions some classes for freshmen: English, math and history. My understanding is that’s pretty normal at US colleges (even though it seems redundant). So it really doesn’t give us much information.
It’d say there’s a strong chance all these classes are in Latin (except for the English class, duh) – as we see evidence that Latin is the primary language of New Rome. English would be being just another language in New Rome (unlike Camp Jupiter), as all the signage is in Latin. Also, according to Apollo a dozen languages can be heard while walking through the forum.
So with the assumption that NRU offers an art degree, we know that some of Annabeth’s architecture classes can be studied at the university. But she probably couldn’t graduate with a proper Architecture degree just through NRU – which is why she dual-enrolls into Bekerley.
Considering Roman culture, it’s not surprising their arts course would have architectural leanings. These are the majors/minors/classes I’d say are likely to be offered: Greco-Roman Mythology, Philosophy, Political Science, Law, Mathematics / Engineering / Architecture, Ancient History / Art History (focus on Rome).
Obviously, Percy mentioned possibly studying marine biology or aquaculture. I think it’s important to note that he’s not decided this. It’s possible he hasn’t realised these aren’t options at NRU. But I think he’s smarter than that. So my theory is that he’s planning to transfer at some point but wants to study alongside Annabeth and stay in the safe-haven of New Rome for a while (these seem to be much higher priorities for him!).
The univerity has a big library, a belltower, and very boring dorms (which I think is just tragic because everything else in New Rome is super fancy, why are the dorms boring? Ten years kids live in barracks, they deserve nice dorms...)
Due to the limited number of people at NRU or in town, I suspect much of the university is maintained by the students themselves. As veterans of the legion, they would be perfectly capable of organising much of the operations of the university. Furthermore, I think post-grads might come to the university to teach the occasional class as a guest lecturer. This all allows for the university to offer a wide range of subjects without too many members of staff.
As for getting into NRU, it seems to be pretty damn difficult. Even if you’ve been approved for entry, you still have to score high on the SATs and pass the DSTOMP. Percy mentions that he’s failed to get a high enough SAT score twice, presumably passing on his third try.
So that’s the university, next I'm going to talk about New Rome’s daily life and culture.
One thing that’s very obvious is that New Rome is flush with cash. The entire town is a mini-haven: gold, and marble everywhere. Pristine gardens. You name it – they have it. This makes sense since demigods are often very talented and when you have multiple generations of demigods living in the town, bringing in wealth…
The good news is that the Romans seem to have kept the tradition of the wealthy funding public works: festivals, civil and religious constructions, etc. Examples of this is the colosseum and racing track. This tradition is likely why NRU is able to exist at all. As the wealthy families can spare the extra cash to fund the place – especially with all the students on scholarships.
As far as I can tell, New Rome has very limited technology. According to Hazel this is because demigods tend to make technology go haywire. There are exceptions to this: Reyna, for example, owns a tablet. And we see the legion hire a fleet of SUVs to cross the country. However, daily-life seems to avoid technology. When celebration are on, the Romans decorate their town with multicoloured lanterns (potentially magic-based). Furthermore, there are no cars in the town – only chariots and wagons.
The locals of New Rome eat a mixture of old and new foods. Focaccia bread is mentioned, which is originally a Roman bread that''s still popular in modern times.
They have a thriving coffee culture! With the number of cafes mentioned, I have to assume coffee is very important to them. And it seems to align more closely with Italian coffee-culture rather than the American one.
One thing that is never mentioned is any kind of policing in New Rome. It’s idyllic nature invites the reader to assume there is simply not need – but we know that nepotism and corruption are present in Camp Jupiter. So why not New Rome as well? More than likely, what’s going on is that New Rome uses the same method of policing as Ancient Rome. That being a patron-client relationship (called a “sponsorship” in the books). Basically, wealthy and powerful families act as protection for those who serve them fidelity. So if you mess with a shop that’s own by “Marcus”, Marcus can go to his sponsors, the Lawrences, to get justice.
Anyway, I don’t have any like crazy conclusions or wild theories. Just wanted to put all this stuff into one place.

Why Consider a Masters Degree in Germany? Exploring the Benefits and Opportunities
Tumblr media
Germany is one of the most popular destinations for international students who want to pursue a masters degree. According to the latest statistics, more than 300,000 foreign students were enrolled in German universities in 2020, making up 13.5% of the total student population. But what makes Germany so attractive for higher education? Here are some of the main reasons why you should consider a masters degree in Germany.
High Quality Education
Germany is known for its excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as humanities, arts, and social sciences. German universities offer a wide range of masters programs, from traditional disciplines to interdisciplinary and innovative ones. Many of these programs are taught in English, making them accessible to international students. Moreover, German universities have a strong reputation in the global academic community, with 44 institutions ranked among the top 500 in the world.
Affordable Costs
One of the biggest advantages of studying in Germany is the low cost of tuition. In most public universities, there is no tuition fee for both domestic and international students, except for a small administrative fee per semester. Even in private universities, the tuition fee is usually much lower than in other countries, such as the UK, the US, or Australia. Additionally, the cost of living in Germany is relatively affordable, especially if you choose to live in a student dormitory or a shared apartment. You can also benefit from various discounts and subsidies for public transportation, cultural events, and health insurance.
Cultural Diversity
Germany is a multicultural and cosmopolitan country, with a rich history and culture. By studying in Germany, you can experience the German way of life, as well as learn about other cultures from your fellow students and professors. You can also enjoy the variety of cuisines, festivals, music, and art that Germany has to offer. Furthermore, you can take advantage of the opportunity to travel around Europe, as Germany is well-connected to other countries by train, bus, or plane.
Career Prospects
A masters degree from a German university can boost your career prospects, both in Germany and abroad. Germany has a strong economy, with many leading companies and industries, such as BMW, Siemens, SAP, and Bosch. As a graduate, you can benefit from the high demand for skilled workers, especially in STEM fields. You can also apply for a job seeker visa, which allows you to stay in Germany for up to 18 months after graduation to look for a suitable job. Alternatively, you can pursue a PhD or a research career in one of the many prestigious research institutes in Germany, such as the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society, or the Helmholtz Association.
How to Apply for a Masters Degree in Germany?
If you are interested in pursuing a masters degree in Germany, you will need to meet some requirements, such as:
Having a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized university
Having a sufficient level of proficiency in the language of instruction (German or English)
Having a valid passport and a student visa (if required)
Having a proof of financial resources to cover your living expenses
Having a health insurance coverage
The application process may vary depending on the university and the program you choose, but generally, you will need to submit the following documents:
A completed application form
A copy of your academic transcripts and diplomas
A copy of your language test scores (such as TestDaF, DSH, TOEFL, or IELTS)
A motivation letter and a curriculum vitae
A copy of your passport and visa (if required)
A proof of financial resources and health insurance
The application deadlines may also differ depending on the university and the program, but usually, they are:
July 15 for the winter semester (starting in October)
January 15 for the summer semester (starting in April)
You can find more information about the application process and the available programs on the websites of the German universities or on the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) website.
How to Find the Best German Study Consultants?
If you need help with finding and applying for a masters degree in Germany, you can consult with professional german study consultants who can provide you with guidance and support throughout the process. Some of the services that german study consultants can offer are:
Helping you choose the right program and university for your goals and interests
Helping you prepare and submit your application documents
Helping you apply for a student visa and a residence permit
Helping you find accommodation and transportation in Germany
Helping you adjust to the academic and cultural environment in Germany
Helping you network with other students and professionals in Germany
However, not all german study consultants are reliable and trustworthy. You should be careful when choosing a german study consultant and avoid falling for scams or frauds. Here are some tips on how to find the best german study consultants:
Do your research and compare different german study consultants based on their reputation, experience, credentials, and reviews
Ask for references and testimonials from previous clients and verify their authenticity
Check if the german study consultants are registered and accredited by the relevant authorities, such as the DAAD, the German Embassy, or the Ministry of Education
Ask for a written contract and a clear breakdown of the fees and services that the german study consultants will provide
Avoid paying any upfront fees or deposits before receiving any service or confirmation from the german study consultants
Avoid any german study consultants who make unrealistic or false promises, such as guaranteed admission, scholarships, or jobs
Conclusion
A master's degree in Germany can be a rewarding and beneficial experience for your personal and professional development. Germany offers high quality education, affordable costs, cultural diversity, and career prospects for international students. However, applying for a masters degree in Germany can be a challenging and complex process, which requires careful planning and preparation. If you need assistance and guidance, you can seek help from reputable and professional german study consultants who can help you achieve your academic goals and dreams.

Indian Students Issued Record Number of Student Visas in the US, F-1 Regulations Updated
Tumblr media
Indian students in the United States were issued a total of 1,30,839 F-1 student visas in 2023, witnessing a 14 per cent surge from 2022, says an ApplyBoard report.
The report says study permit trends in the US has indicated that this is the second year in a row, when Indians received more US student visas than students from any other country.
In 2023, the quantity of F1 student visas granted exceeded by 10,000 the total number of visas issued to the leading four East Asian markets collectively.
According to the report's findings, approximately 4,46,000 F-1 student visas were issued by the US in 2023, marking an 8.5% rise from the 4,11,000 visas issued in 2022. This figure represents the largest number of student visas issued in a single year since 2016.
More than 2 lakh Indian students consider pursuing higher education in the US every year. According to the US Embassy, Indian immigrants encompass 20 per cent of the foreign student group who aim to gain the know-how of emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Especially students who desire to study Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses prefer the US as their go-to destination for its quality education, frontline universities, and diverse culture.
What is an F1 visa?
An F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that enables students to enter the US provinces and attend a university or college, high school, elementary school, seminary, language training program, or other academic organisation. Till now, Indian students holding an F-1 visa could avail of up to 12 months of optional practical training (OPT), pre or post-completion of their graduate studies in STEM. They could apply for another year of OPT when seeking a postsecondary degree at a higher level.
However, there were a few challenges related to the postgraduate employment visa and its transformation to a work visa, which the country aims to revamp to attract international students.
How does an F-1 visa attract Indian students to the US?
The US is already a STEM hub, with some of the world’s finest universities with high academic standards and rigorous practical training grooming global learners. However, pursuing an education in the United States is expensive, with prices varying by degree program, location, type of university, and other factors. The tuition cost of a program usually ranges from $32,000 to $60,000 per year. Furthermore, living costs are 241% more expensive than in India, ranging between $10,000 to $18,000 per annum.
In this scenario, an F-1 visa allows students to work beside their full-time academic commitment to earn a living. It permits learners to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the session and up to 40 hours per week during holidays. Moreover, the F-1 visa is valid for up to 5 years, during which a student can switch between academic programs or transfer to a different school by notifying the USCIS.
Tumblr media
F-1 visas also enable students to work off-campus through OPT after completing their academic program. Learners who want to stay longer in the United States and pursue employment can apply for the OPT program and switch their student visa to an H-1B work visa for an initial three-year period. However, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) used to take about 150-210 days (5-7 months) to process Form I-765 for employment authorisation, causing delays and complications.
Revised provisions of an F-1 visa
In September 2022, the USCIS announced a revision of employment authorisation applicable from March 6 to extend a student’s retention period in the US, reduce the backlog, and enhance processing efficiency. In this policy, selected categories of students on F-1 visas who pursue studies in STEM or its allied modules can opt for an additional 24 months extension of their OPT program to find a suitable employment opportunity. Once the extension period ends, they can apply for an H-1B work visa or search for an employer willing to sponsor their work visas.
Moreover, the revised F-1 visa provision focuses on premium processing of employment authorisation. That said, a student on an F-1 visa can apply for an H-1B work visa by filling out Forms I-129, I-140, and I-765 for Employment Authorisation and Form I-907 for Requesting Premium Processing Service. The USCIS will take 15 calendar days (instead of 210) to process the applications from submission, accelerating their review process and reducing turnaround time.
