1. Dennis K. via Facebook: It was on your recommendation years ago Maria D over a Guinness in the back of McArthys pub in Dingle after a gig you did with your husband that got me watching Orphan Black. I have loved every episode since. You seemed so passionate about this show and all your colleagues on it. My question is – did you shed a few tears when you realised Siobhans number was up? Maria Doyle Kennedy: Graeme Manson (one of the show’s creators) called me last summer to talk to me about the character’s journey for the final season. He said they had been searching for an “emotional bomb” to propel the story towards a grand finale and that S’s death was what they had thought of. As soon as I heard it, I thought it was exactly the right thing for the show — probably the biggest loss that the core characters could suffer , and something that would make them dig to their very essence in order to survive.
I was also honored that they (Graeme and John) had such respect for my character and for me as a person, that they felt it was important to make that early call.
2. Joshua T. via Facebook: How did the whole “chicken” thing come about? Was that written in from the start of the series or did it come in naturally from you developing the character? Is it something you say in real life? (For the record, the rest of the extraordinary cast has already spilled the beans about that.) MDK: It is something that I say in real life!  Like several other things in the show (my singing in Season 3, Kristian [Donnie]’s Highland fling in Season 5) it came from Graeme and John being present when something happens and saying to themselves “Let’s get that in the show.”
3. Brooke P. via Facebook: First off, thank you for Siobhan. She was my favorite character. A badass until the end. (I took her loss really hard and am still trying to process it) When did you find out about her demise? Did you know she was going to meet her end at the beginning of the season or is that something you found out once you got the script? What was your reaction when you read the script for the first time? MDK: When it came to the read-through for that episode though, I was very nervous. Even though I was aware of what it contained, I was fairly sure I was going to cry. I got through the reading and then was a bit tearful. I was sitting next to Tat who hugged me and told me they loved me, which of course turned the tears to sobs, mortified by my inability to compose my self. I looked up to say, “Sorry about that,” to find the whole room crying. I will never forget it. It was just prior to filming Episode 8 and the first time we all realized that it was really coming to an end.
3. Evelina S. via Facebook: Back in season one your only concern was Kira’s safety, but step by step you’ve forgive Sarah, you’ve accepted her brand new sisters (and brother) and protected them, and now you’ve finally welcomed Delphine, Colin and Adele, how do you feel about this change for Siobhan? MDK: I think for S., finding and reconciling with her own mother changed everything for her. She saw how much of her own actions and rebellion as a younger woman were a response to the disconnect and loss of relationship with her family. She also knows that she won’t be around forever, and so she desperately wants to create a network of love and support and friendship around Sarah and Kira and Felix, so that they are able to care for each other and able to carry on without her when she is no longer there.
4. Kaitlyn J. via Facebook: What was your favorite line to deliver as S? P.S. You were completely brilliant as our lovable but tough clone club matriarch. Really going to miss S in these last couple episodes.
MDK: Thank you so much. I’ve been overwhelmed by the #CloneClub love. I have so many memories of lines, not as they are meant, but of the random things that happened around them…usually that involves me or someone else farting (!) I remember in Season 3 somewhere, Sarah and S were on a Skype call hearing about Rachel’s demands for her safe passage away. A ticket to Taiwan was one of her demands, and I improvised “Taiwan no less,” sounding just like my own mother, and Tat burst out laughing.
5. María F. via Facebook: What was the hardest part of doing this character? Btw love you so much you are incredibly talented and you really made Mrs S one of the most amazing characters on tv!! MDK: Doing the really badass stuff.. the guns, the pinning folks to tables with carving knives… I had to work really hard at that — I’m not a natural gun-wielder. I would watch it again and again on the monitor to make sure I believed it.
6. Karla V. via Facebook: Please tell us one funny story you have on set! MDK: There are many, but my most recent one was when Sarah & S are in the hotel bar in Episode 4 of Season 5 pretending to have a fight in order to con Dr. Perkins. We were trying to keep the drink-throwing to a minimum in order to save costume drying time, so when he thought he had the shot, our director David Wellington shouted “CUT!” but so loudly that Tat’s hand flew into the air and completely soaked me. The entire crew cracked up!
7. @plusplusbrochu via Twitter: How was the feeling when you saw #cloneclub’s reaction after Siobhan’s death? MDK: I was, and still am, totally overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection and comfort from #CloneClub towards me and the rest of the cast, but also towards each other. Truly heartwarming.
8. @lilmistrouble via Twitter: Felix has been inspired by many women but which women inspire you the most? MDK: Oh so many. My mother; my sister Fiona; a special aunt (Veronica); a formidable group of female friends who have gotten me through everything thus far in my life; Tatiana for her extraordinary dedication to and ability at her craft… Some of the other artists… Patti Smith, Andrea Arnold, Frida Kahlo, Julia Margaret Cameron, and two incredible glass artists I have just gotten to know: Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick. I could make this a never-ending list.

Melody Tramonto | 15 years old | Daughter of Apollo | Cabin Seven | TAKEN
↳ T h e  l i f e  o f  M e l o d y  T r a m o n t o —
Alyson Tramonto, Melody’s mother, enlisted in the army after graduating high school and spent her service performing in the military band. Alyson is also a highly disciplined soldier. It was during her time in the Army Band that she attracted the attention of not one god, but two. Ares was drawn to Alyson’s discipline, sensing the potential she could have as a soldier if only she could be put to the test. Apollo, on the other hand was enchanted with her musical talent and her devotion to music. In the end, Alyson proved her love of music was stronger than her desire to be a soldier when she fell in love with Apollo. It wasn’t long before Alyson had Melody. Ares thought Alyson to be a bitter disappointment and a waste of potential.
Melody grew up as an army brat, moving locations every 3-4 years to a different military base with her mother. Being the new kid so often, Melody found solace in her hobbies during times of transition. Musically gifted like her mother, as well as growing up surrounded by professional musicians, Melody became accomplished at both piano and violin. However, Melody found her true passion was in tennis. She practiced daily, hitting against large stretches of walls around the base and developing her skills on her own. When Melody’s mother retired from active duty, they moved to California to be closer to family. Melody’s uncle recognized her potential and spent hours helping her practice. Through hard work and dedication, combined with her natural ability, Melody has ranked as one of the best tennis players in her age group in the country.
Melody never knew she was a demigod, although her family did. Her mother chose not to tell Melody, as she was worried this could put her in danger. She hoped growing up on military bases would provide enough protection to keep her daughter safe. She eventually realized that the constant moving was tough for Melody and their extended family was missing out on Melody growing up. Time was running out before Melody would have to make her way to camp and her mother wanted to give her a childhood before it was inevitably taken from her, as it was for all heroes. Although it was a hard decision for her, Melody’s mother retired from active duty to give her daughter a chance to have a relationship with their extended family and as close to a normal childhood as she could provide before it was time for her to go to camp.
↳ C a m p  J u p i t e r ‘ s  8 – m o n t h l o c k d o w n —
Melody was a recent arrival at Camp Half Blood during the 8-month lockdown. After moving off the military base, more and more strange things kept happening. For the most part, Melody didn’t notice or attributed it to life off of the base. Her family knew better, yet they couldn’t find the words to tell her. Melody’s mother prayed that Apollo might give her an idea on how to break the news to Melody, or give her a clue of when she should send her to camp but he was serving his punishment as a mortal. Another god was listening, however, and Ares saw this as an opportunity to cultivate Melody into the warrior that her mother wasn’t. With Apollo out of the picture, there was nothing stopping him asserting his own influence.
Melody wasn’t concerned about Camp Jupiter. She knew that others were concerned though, and she realized something serious must have been happening. Having never seen the camp for herself, and never knowing anyone from Camp Jupiter, she didn’t understand what everyone else was missing.
↳ P e r s o n a l i t y —
Melody is a very focused and driven girl. When she discovers a passion for something she commits herself to it wholeheartedly. Her dedication to music and tennis are only a few examples of this drive. Sometimes her dedication can be too intense and she doesn’t know when to let things go. Some people call it being strong-willed, others might classify it as being stubborn.
Part of Melody’s stubbornness is her refusal to accept some aspects of her new life as a demigod. She avoids using healing magic as to use it would be to admit that it is real. She likes her mace, since swinging it feels familiar to swinging a tennis racquet. In target practice she prefers a rifle as it grounds her more firmly in the familiar.
Melody is a performer at heart and a bit of a drama queen. She thrives under the spotlight where others might shy away. This has also been a help in her tennis career as crowds don’t distract her. She also rarely suffers from stage fright. However, it is not enough for Melody to be in front of a crowd. She needs to have some sort of response. Applause is something she thrives off of and further fuels her drive to succeed. Being ignored is her own personal form of torture.
Melody is very personable and gets along with a lot of people. She has a hard time forming lasting, meaningful relations though since she is so used to moving from place to place. She doesn’t mind being alone with her music or training for tennis matches.
↳ A b i l i t i e s  a n d  w e a k n e s s e s —
✔ Musically inclined. Some healing magic. Sports medicine. Perfect aim.
‣ Like all Greek demigods, Melody suffers from ADHD (to keep her alert to threats) and, because her brain is hard-wired to read Greek, from dyslexia.
✘ Her underdeveloped healing magic takes time to “recharge” after each use.
↳ T h i n g s  t o  r e m e m b e r —
She is a nationally ranked tennis player in her age group.
She plays the violin and the piano
She hates the sight of blood, but is interested in sports medicine
She wants to become a chiropractor one day.
Her weapon of choice is a mace, and she likens it to swinging a tennis racquet
She isn’t bad at archery, but prefers a rifle during target practice
↳ R e l a t i o n s h i p s —
Sebastian Jones: Melody and Bastian get along pretty well and have bonded over their mutual love of music. Like all siblings, they have their differences as well as their similarities and they are still getting used to the whole idea of being siblings. They are friendly but haven’t really developed much of a deeper relationship than that.
Flora Gonzalez: Melody and Flora have also bonded over a mutual love of music and get together often for impromptu jam sessions. They share a dramatic outlook on life and love to get together and update one another on what’s happening around camp. Flora and Melody instantly got along, and Flora has become one of Melody’s favorite people at Camp Half-Blood.
Isaiah Bradley: As two people who are friendly enough but unused to forming long-lasting relationships, Melody and Isaiah have gotten along extremely well. They have an easy and low-maintenance  friendship. Melody is unaware Isaiah is a pathological liar, but as a naturally skeptical person, it won’t be long before she starts to pick up on it.

MDK: I think she understood that Rachel was a product of the life she had lived and the (lack of) real love she had been shown. I think S began to believe that if she could really get in there, she could affect some change.
10. @ThereGoesMinky via Twitter: If Mrs. S were to give her #CloneClub chickens one piece of parting advice, what would it be? MDK: I am so honured to have been part of something that seems to have meant so much to so many. The ideas of identity and family are very big ones for all of us. Find your tribe. Kick negative ideas and a–holes to the curb. Live with honor and as little judgment of others as you can manage. I hope that although the show is ending, some sense of community and support will continue for each other among #CloneClub. You are a mighty force. X Maria

Color matching struggles
By the end of this internship I am going to have a whole new level of appreciation for glass works, let me tell ya. You’d think that I’d expect that since I am working at a museum that has the third largest collection of glass in the country, but I couldn’t anticipate working so closely on not one, but two glass exhibitions that are coming the Chrysler in the fall.
I’ve created a good amount of promotional material for the Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace exhibition this week, but progress on that is stunted until Diane, Meredith, and Jane all approve of that. So for now, we turn our attention back to our favorite glassmaker of 1920 Paris, René Lalique.
The design team has been working on designing a timeline of Lalique that will lead the visitor into the larger exhibition space, a timeline that has gone though many many edits. It is finally almost done and by the end of the business day today, Desi will send the text off to the printer so they can get started with getting that back to us as soon as possible.
While that is going down, our exhibition fabricator Clark will be repainting all the walls. This week, one of my tasks was to help Desi find a grey to use for background of the labels that is identical to the paint that is going up. Simple right?
This process was incredibly meticulous– if you don’t have the eye or patience for minute details, this would make you want to rip your hair out. Desi printed off a few swatches that were all just a few RGB points off from each other and we placed them next to a plank that was painted the intended grey. As you can see, the difference of one point here and there can create drastic changes in temperatures of the colors. Honestly, what would we do without Desi?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we narrowed it down (I believe we picked R167 G154 B144 but don’t hold me to that), we then took our swatches out to the sample wall and tested it out there. The lighting in there is dimmer and warmer so the appearance of the shades differed and we had to reconsider our selection. Finding the swatch that disappeared with the wall was much harder than I thought it would be.
In the end, Desi and I agreed on the same color so the design team will soon start making labels using that color. For something so small, it took us the better part of an hour to find the perfect shade. At the end of the day, the average visitor is not going to be thinking much about the color of the labels, but it’s the little details that count and most designers live for those little details. I know that I do.

Species at risk: Mormon Metalmark (Apodemia mormo) butterfly depends on buckwheat host plant.
It’s biodiversity decade 2011-2020. What is biodiversity?   Biodiversity is species biodiversity, ecological biodiversity, and genetic biodiversity.
At the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation area, there is a great diversity of ecosystems and habitats. There are native and modified grasslands, native and afforested woodlands, as well as the West Swale wetlands, including the north segment of Chappell Marsh.
Flora and fauna species biodiversity abounds within each of the biomes of the afforestation area mentioned above.
Genetic biodiversity, which encompasses those differentiation within a species. ” All dogs are part of the same species, but their genes can dictate whether they are Chihuahua or a Great Dane. There can be a lot of variation in genes – just think about all the colors, sizes, and shapes that make up the genetic diversity of dogs. NWF”  Consider hybridization of tree species in the afforestation area.
Globally, efforts are underway to protect biodiversity! You, now, can support the national interest in preserving biodiversity by becoming involved locally. For instance, Meewasin Valley Authority is currently conducting a city wide river bank clean up the Meewasin Spring Clean-up Campaign April 22 – May 19, 2017. The South West off leash recreation area is hosting their clean up April 29, 2017 10:00 a.m. to noon.
“About a third of assessed species worldwide are threatened with extinction in the wild. Ecosystem diversity is also vulnerable”NCC.“ The Nature Conservancy of Canada, states that the Canadian Prairies are the “world’s most endangered ecosystem…. temperate grasslands are endangered…[they] are faced with continuing habitat loss, fragmentation and desertification, impacting both biodiversity and local people that rely on healthy grasslands for their livelihood.”NCC.” NCC realizes the plight of temperate grasslands, as do the International Union for the Conservation of Nature the Journal of Ecological Letters and the journal Science magazine all have reported on the dire straits of the prairie grasslands. What will be the domino effect on flora and fauna, on the natural wildlife habitat which relies on native grasslands? Ranging across the prairies, the plains bison, swift fox, greater sage grouse, Baird’s sparrow, Sprague’s pipit and chestnut-collared longspur, for example, are few and far between.
Do you value your naturalized areas?
Are you part of the management of your local heritage?
Do you treasure your woodland, wetland, river, and grassland areas?
How can do you help?
Did you know that “Legacy pollution refers to any pollution that remains from past activities where there is no immediately responsible party who can be held liable for the pollution and compelled to carry out remediation…1) Accept the problem and establish responsibility and leadership. Targeting ”
“It is important to remember that when combined each local effort has the power to change the world. Without such changes, our children may never know the rich biodiversity we experience today.Clean UP. “
Remember to support your local bio-diversity;
International Day of Forests March 21
World Water Day March 22
Earth Day April 22
International Day for Biological Diversity May 22
World Environment Day June 5
National Forest Week is the last full week of September
National Tree Day (Maple Leaf Day) falls on the Wednesday of that week.
Do you have an avid interest in the first arrival of spring’s robin? The pelican? The pasqueflower, or spring crocus? The Meadowlark? These true harbringers of spring rely on your active engagement to protect biodiversity locally in your area!
When opening the Loraas bins lids at the South Saskatchewan River weir it was indeed found  empty?!?!?!  Does this imply that a huge amount of volunteers have been out which is fantastic and the Loraas bin has been emptied, Wow!  Or does it mean that no one has been cleaning around the weir and area, arrggghhh.
Kudos and congratulations to all those volunteers who have filled the Loraas bins at Meewasin Park north to overflowing, what a testament to cleaning up the river, and the shoreline.

Two decades ago, at the first Earth Summit, the vast majority of the world’s nations declared that human actions were dismantling the Earth’s ecosystems, eliminating genes, species and biological traits at an alarming rate. This observation led to the question of how such loss of biological diversity will alter the functioning of ecosystems and their ability to provide society with the goods and services needed to prosper”.Cardinale
