Part 3

The Titans stared blankly as Mumbo, or rather, Mitchell, comforted Mad Mod. Beast Boy was the first to break their silence, shaking his head to knock his thoughts back in order.

“Whoa whoa whoa! Time out!” the changeling held the fingertips of one hand to the palm of the other. “Since when do you two hang out? Why did you break your own wand? And why are you acting… normal?”

The teen was met with a deep scowl from Mitchell. “Is now really the time for this?”

Beast Boy’s ears drooped and his back stiffened. While he could easily take Mitchell on in his purely human form, something about that look told him not to. He’d never seen the former magician look so serious.

“It kind of is,” Robin argued, stepping forward. “You two have caused us a lot of trouble. If you’ve been plotting something, we have the right to know.”

“We’re not plotting anything,” Mitchell assured, lightly stroking Mod’s hand with his thumb. “He’s actually been trying to help me.”

“Are you sure you want to tell them this?” Mod asked with great worry etched into his already panicked features.

“We’ll have to tell them eventually,” Mitchell sighed.

“Tell us what?” Robin’s eyes narrowed.

“Why I commit crime in the first place.”

The Titans looked at each other, then to Mitchell, waiting for an explanation.

“My hat and wand do more than alter my appearance and grant me magical abilities… they render me insane and compel me to spread chaos with the magic it bestows.”

“If that’s true, why didn’t you say something sooner?” Robin asked, skeptical.

“Because I didn’t want to be thrown in an asylum! Do you know what they do to people in those places?!” Mitchell shuddered. “I’d rather lose my physical health in prison than my physical and mental health in an asylum.”

“I do know,” Robin replied seriously, thinking back on his time under Batman’s wing and their checks on Arkham Asylum. “They can be horribly cruel and inept. That’s why we take precautions and regularly check the conditions of such places. We wouldn’t let anything happen to you.”

“An asylum wouldn’t work for me,” the grey haired man argued. “The insanity is magically induced and I’m perfectly sane when I’m not under the influence of the magic. That’s what Neil is helping me with.”

“An atypical problem calls for an atypical solution,” Neil spoke up, sounding a bit calmer. “I’ve been looking for a way to counteract the insanity with mind control. We’re making progress, but the technique ‘as yet to be perfected.”

“Why do you simply not avoid the magic to begin with?” Starfire asked. “If you are not affected by the magic, would you not then be okay?”

“I don’t have a choice in the matter. The hat keeps coming back to me and making me to wear it. The hat is linked to me and it won’t leave me alone until I die. When that happens, it will find a new host and the cycle will begin again.”

“…What?” Raven asked flatly.

Mitchell sighed.

“I think it’d be best to start from the beginning with this; tell you just what the hat is, where it came from, and how I wound up with it.”

“Please,” Starfire requested.

“Alright. It’s a long story, so settle in.”
