DAY 25. AUGUST 26.

Sao Miguel, Azores Portugal 🇵🇹

This morning we had to wake up early again. We took our taxi (shoutout to the homie, Luis) to Ribeira dos Caldeirões, where we took a canyoneering tour! On this tour we suited up in wetsuits, harnesses, and helmets and hiked a short distance up a creek. Then we departed from the path to start going down the creek across multiple waterfalls and cliffs. Chelsea and I rappelled down a few of these, and had the opportunity to jump off the others, which ranged from 2 to 7 meters tall! It definitely gave us vibes of kings canyon, jumping off of John Muir rock and the bridge downstream from there.

After the tour, chelsea sweet talked the other couple on our tour to take us with them as they toured that part of the island in search of some coastline and waterfall views. We went to Farol da Ponta do Arnel , which was a cool lighthouse that was supposed to have a huge waterfall, but it was just a trickle because it’s summertime here.

Next, we tagged along to another place, Salto do Farinha. This time we hiked a bit but the water fall was tiny again due to lack of water! We decided to continue on and found a beautiful pool called Poca do Azul and we took a refreshing dip there.

We parted from our Belgian friends and took our taxi with Luis back towards Ponta Delgada, stopping at Caldeira Velha only to find out it was closed. We did get to stop at the Gorreana tea factory though which was cool.

At home we did a few logistical things and cooked up some Chorizo and pasta for dinner. It was a fantastic day.

Since 1883, the Gorreana tea plantation is the oldest, and currently only, tea plantation in Europe. As soon as I've stepped out of the car, the scent of tea leaves was all around me. You can visit the tea factory for free and see how the leaves are dried and packaged. In the end there's a cafeteria where you can taste the tea for free. Also, people can freely visit the plantation. And for the geocaching fans, you can find some #geocache around here. Needless to say I bought a lot of tea. Già solo perché assomiglia al Vietnam è figo. Ma c'è di più: questo è l'unico posto in Europa in cui si coltiva té. E hanno una storia particolare, tipo last man standing. Infatti la riconversione per l'allevamento, i costi dell'elettricità e della mano d'opera li avevano gettati sul lastrico, tanto che i proprietari avevano licenziato tutti i dipendenti perché non li potevano pagare. Ma. Loro hanno continuato a lavorare perché c'era qualcosa di più tra loro che un semplice rapporto di lavoro. Così pur non percependo nulla, come una famiglia, dipendenti e proprietari hanno continuato a credere e a lavorare; ora sono qui: gli unici in Europa. Cosa mi ha insegnato questa storia? Che c'è sempre una squadra dietro il giocatore, un po' come Ronaldo ha dietro fior fior di giocatori. Che se lo si vuole davvero, non c'è sfiga, destino o Dio che tenga. I campioni sono destinati a vincere e di sicuro l'unica tea factory del continente fa parte di questo gruppo, dei campioni.
