The way sprite and I’s tastes in games clash is so funny
Im like ‘this is an experimental puzzle game made in 2002 where you play as an ai exploring their own trauma in a esoteric dream state using hijacked cameras and line of sight based puzzles and a time dialation mechanic. and you have to navigate the game through code readouts but its very good’
And sprite is like ‘this is infinite superdeath gungame where you can kill things forwver :)’

About Valve
They are a corporation, with all it's problems and some boons. However, I find this very funny when you imagine them as a guy who goes into a workshop for a year or two and then emerge putting an item on the table, smiling, and going back into the workshop.
A dozen corporations each put out their FPS games, meant to be the new king of the genre.
Valve, emerging, nomming an apple: "Hey guys, we finally finished Half Life 2. Hope it was worth the wait. Also... Here's Team Fortress 2 and a niche puzzler called Portal. Have fun.", then leave.
Everyone gets the Orange Box and after playing with HL2 and TF2, they just fall in love with Portal. So much so that everyone tries to copy Portal's tone. Everyone makes their hero shooter games more like TF2 with design. Everyone wants to reach the level of AI HL2 had, and then it turns out that HL2's AI is stronger than believed, the level design holds them back.
And then Valve is left in the dust by other aspects, AI, and so on.
Then Valve returns, saying they got "an episode for HL2, new format, have fun". Everyone made episodic formats but THIS sold the deal, being just there, easy to access on Steam! Everyone wants their own Steam and their own episodic game.
Then Valve runs into it's archnemesis-duo: time and the number 3. So they disappear for a while. Everyone forgets about Half Life 3 (I kid: people wait it like a Messiah)... then Valve emerges to the FPS scene.
"Hey guys, here is Portal 2. Now with coop. See you later.", then disappearing again. Portal 2 has only one reference to the old memes, brings new ones, and a surprise show of Nolan North, who is in everything. People want to ask Valve but they are gone again.
Then VR games break out. Everyone makes VR games. Everyone is happy with them, training, trying roller coasters and FPS games and so.
Then Valve slips by, drops The Lab VR, and disappears. Not a single word. The game suddenly enshrines how to control two hands at the same time... And VR leaves Valve in the dust again. Everyone has their gungames and so... And then, suddenly:
"Hey, this is cute. Anyone, everyone, here is Half Life Alyx." They put it on the table, smile, and the moment someone asks "is this HL3?", Valve just disappears behind a passing bus again.
And Alyx is suddenly blowing up because it is like Half Life 2.5+pi.
And people still play Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2 and Portal. Their design still hold up, even if the graphics are dated.
This Valve guy knows something.

First of all, Quinlan the beloved 🙏🏼 I hope it’s ok if I ask some of the oc questions cuz I’d love to get to know him more!
Basics 2 and 3, Personality 8 and 11, Background 1, Relationships 4 and Fun facts 8? Don’t feel like you have to answer them all if it’s too much I just think he’s really cool (*´꒳`*)
-What does their name mean? Why were they named that?
Quinlan means “shapely, fit, strong” Not too meaningful but his Ma thought it would suit him as he grew older, and it does!
-How old are they? When’s their birthday?
He’s 26 when he arrives in Sandrock. His birthday is 10th of Summer!
-What are their manners like? Any habits?
He’s adapted many mannerisms while traveling around but since he stayed at Atara and Vega5 the longest, he is generally polite, friendly and professional. At the same time though, while dealing with certain individuals at those cities he’s also learned to act accordingly when needed, such as being sarcastic, gentle, aggressive, cunning etc. He’ll switch it up when need be.
He has few little habits but his main one would be..singing. You may see him around with headphones popped in, hearing him sing or hum various tunes from the old world. It keeps his mind busy, keeps him distracted from…other things
-What are some items they always carry and why? Do they collect anything?
Tumblr media
(This is an old drawing but-) He always keeps some kind of music player (+backups in case batteries run out) and headphones. A Gungam themed duffel bag; he always used traveling bc he traveled light, this bag was enough. In Sandrock he uses it to carry materials and commission items if he needed to. Mask + goggles of course for Sandstorms (and maybe for a disguise?) Also his red gem earring is a treasured item, it’s part of a pair and his dear friend has the other half.
He has a collection of various books, relics and tech that he keeps in a classified hideout location. Any duplicate items he’ll donate anonymously to the nearest museum/research center the item was found.
-Where were they born? What was their childhood like?
He’s Lucien born! You can find his brief childhood description in a previous ask~
-Who do they look up to? Who do they trust?
In general, he looks up to his older sister Mali,in Sandrock; Justice, Mort and Zeke.
He trusts: Mali, Mint, Claire (Portia oc), his Ma. It’s still up in the air for anyone in Sandrock though, the current situation is big sus. He leaning toward trusting a bit in Justice, Heidi and his outcast crew (Qi, Unsuur, Fang, + sometimes Zeke) He’s ok with trusting X, Jasmine and Pebbles though 👍🏼
-If you had to choose one tarot card to represent them, which would it be?
Hmmm I’m not at all familiar with tarot cards or things like that so I’m gonna skip ^^;

Speeding up and slowing down
It's easy to speed through My Time at Sandrock, especially if you're an experienced player. I thought I'd put some notes down as to when to slow down your game (and conversely, which missions you should finish as quickly as possible). This only covers up through the end of the "Knives Out" update but I'll try to remember to update when more of the story comes out. Spoilers are inevitable, so cutting.
First of all, you'll get a handful of missions that should take you a week max. These are "Welcome to Sandrock" through "Picking Up the Slack". They're introductory stuff, how to build, etc. You'll want to get through this set as fast as possible to take advantage of the free scrap yard pass and the opportunity to mine your own copper/tin.
Once you get through with these and weather your first sandstorm (approximately 2 days after you finish "Picking Up the Slack"), you'll be presented with "The Show Must Go On". Despite Matilda's request to hurry, there's no need to do so. You'll need to upgrade your pickhammer to bronze anyway, and you should do the same for your axe. You'll also need to get either the processor or the grinder, and now is a good time to get both. Take the time to build up your money, levels, workshop reputation, relationships, and maybe get a yard upgrade or two.
For the next bunch, you can't avoid "Farewell Party", which takes place a day or two after you finish "The Show Must Go On". Likewise, you've got a time limit on "Cover My Glass" (2 days) and "Pitching In" (1 day) so just get those done. You'll have a day or two to relax before being presented with "The Old Man and the Tree". There is no rush to get down to the Moisture Farm, and you'll want to be at least level 10-12 before you get down there anyway.
Once you start "The Old Man and the Tree", you'll get "Moisture Farm Blues". This is a mission I always rush because food prices go up here and well... I don't like letting the NPCs starve. This will take a day or two in itself because you need to run the Breach three times, two of which will take considerable stamina.
There's no time limit on the following mission ("The Grass is Greener") and it will overlap with "Operation De-Geeglate" anyway. These two missions can be taken at your leisure. Food prices are back to normal. You'll start getting requests to grow stuff, so slow down and grow stuff. You'll need to research an intermediate worktable anyway, so now is a good time to get some extra machines set up, take some commissions, get some relationships up, and get even more ore/scrap. Get the Civil Recycler researched and built as you'll need it shortly. You'll want to get up to about level 15 anyway before completing this, and it never hurts to get higher. Put some money aside to get some upgraded weapons for the next bit.
"Operation De-Geeglate" turns quickly into "The Belly of the Beast" (unless you want to leave Justice, Mi-an, and Unsuur waiting). After this, you'll be in a mode where water costs more so you'll want to get through the next few missions as quickly as possible.
The next few missions should be more time-consuming than anything else. I'd pick up a commission at least every other day because if you haven't been smelting stuff in your furnaces you'll be smelting copper and bronze on top of making things on your grinder/processor(s). You'll also be running iron scrap in your Civil Recycler (which you'll need to research and build if you didn't prior to this mission) "In Trusses We Trust", "Paradise Lost and Found", "Qi's Gungam Opus", "The Inspector" and "Mint Condition" should be completed as soon as you can. You should also be handed "Keep on Rockin" which has a 7-day time limit, and can be done in parallel with the other bunch of missions.
Once you get "Mint Condition" finished there will be some time to breathe. Prices will go back to normal. You'll automatically get "Practice what you Preach" and then "Recipe for Fun". You don't need to hurry on the sandrunning kiosk for Catori. You'll need to upgrade your assembly station anyway, so take time to go down a few levels at Gecko Station and refurbish some of your copper and tin from the abandoned ruins near the salvage yard, build up your supply of rubber scrap, take some commissions, expand your yard, and upgrade your machines. I usually try to get 2x each of the recycler, grinder, furnace, and processor. You can upgrade in place so no need to make entirely new machines (unless you're aiming to donate an old one to the museum). It's a good time to upgrade your pickhammer, axe, and weapons (if possible) to iron.
After you install the sandrunning kiosk, things get a bit exciting (including the price of water going up again after it just recovered) so you'll have a few missions you want to get done. The main one is "Appetite for Construction" but you'll also have "Sandapalooza", "Where's Mi-an" and "Out of the Past" to contend with, none of which require building.
Once you get "Appetite for Construction" finished, you can breathe again. It'll be a while before you have another mission where you need to rush. You do have one time-limited mission ("The Desks They Are A'Changin"), but you can take your time on "The Missing Leak", "Shipwreck Confidential", "Breakthrough New Goo", "One Small Step for Sandrockers", "Civil Business" (to an extent; it's got a 14-day time limit), "The Kidnapping", "Bucking Bronco" and "Pet Investigations". You'll want to be at level 26 at the very least for "Shipwreck Confidential" and it's better to be higher and/or pick up a lot of healing items. Do the usual restocking supplies/doing commissions/interacting with townsfolk. You might want to upgrade your tailoring machine as you'll need it shortly.
Things speed up again when you start "First Impressions". It in itself can be completed at your leisure. The next three ("Something In The Air", "Leak and Destroy", "Clear the Air") you probably want to complete fairly quickly. They're not as bad as previous missions where prices went up but it'll make things easier rather than later and you don't have people with interesting skin colors (other than maybe your Builder) walking around town.
The good news is that the rest of the missions past "Clear the Air" can be done at a fairly leisurely pace. There will still be some time-limited ones ("Monster Huntin' for Dummies"/"Chasing Elsie") , but you don't have to rush through them unless there's something you have to have. Feel free to pick up stuff from the area around Gecko Ruins, explore the Valley of Whispers and the Badlands, pick up supplies, the usual.
And that's that for the moment. Keep building, keep expanding, keep exploring, keep befriending. Enjoy!
