Mid South Gravel Recap
The dark clouds of possible precipitation and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) hung over Stillwater, Oklahoma during the Mid South Gravel event this past weekend. While preparations for both filled the minds of racers and sponsors who opted to attend, uncertainty filled the air. On the cusp of a downpour, promoters and attendees came to terms with the situation, accepted its potential consequences and riders raced.

The Race
When looking at the history of the Mid South Gravel (formerly known as Land Run 100), a common characteristic discussed is the weather. While the event has had its dry years, with fast rolling gravel roads, it has also had its wet years. During these wet years, Oklahoma’s gravel roads inevitably turn into a sloppy, muddy mess. This year was a wet year.
Tumblr media
This year also boasted the strongest women’s and men’s field in the history of the event. Former champions, World Tour racers and gravel legends took to the start line in hopes of winning the first monument gravel race on the calendar.
While course conditions surely played a role in the outcome, so did each racers choice in equipment and clothing. Cold and wet weather and broken derailleurs certainly affected the results. In the end, teammates Hannah Finchamp and Payson McElveen  (Orange Seal Off-Road Team) were crowned as the victors of Mid South. BikeFlights.com employees Gordon Wadsworth and Michael Potter also raced and finished fifth and 25th respectively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The clay-rich soil embedded into the gravel roads of Stillwater is no joke. When wet weather arrives this terrain wrecks drivetrains, brakes and drains a racers energy tank. Participants will likely be replacing chains, brake pads, cables, bottom brackets, bar tape and more. The local car washes were certainly busy after the race as riders sprayed down the mud that was layered on frames and tires.
Tumblr media
Hoping to minimize the havoc wreaked by the muddy roads, Salsa Bikes released a brand new bike equipped specifically to handle the conditions at the Mid South. The Stormchaser is a purpose-built aluminum single speed gravel bike with plenty of tire clearance, and it proved its durability by taking its first win in the single speed class over the weekend.
Tumblr media
Mark your calendars because the Mid South will return again on March 12-13, 2021.

The Elephant in the Room
As Mid South approached, the coronavirus crisis ramped up quickly, with advice from government officials changing daily and sometimes also hourly. Organizers consulted with local and state officials about what to do and ultimately decided to proceed with the event for those who wanted to attend. Naturally in such an unprecedented time, controversy ensued with some supporting that decision and some criticizing it. Since we at BikeFlights.com were already there before more severe restrictions ultimately happened, we decided to participate although about half of the 3,000 riders did not. As with most attendees, we did our best to replace direct contact with fist bumps and more personal space.  We respect everyone’s decision and will not be attending any further events until advised that it’s safe to do so by officials. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to limit the spread of the virus and prevent as many unnecessary deaths as possible, and we invite you to do the same. Read our recent Coronavirus-19 statement.
For those who were not able to or who decided not to attend, Mid South offered deferrals for guaranteed entry into the 2021 edition. We also look forward to attending next year and hope we’ll see you there!
