i have mostly been talking about my experiences with other social media platforms elsewhere, but since i just realised for how long i've been doing this by now (i think i got serious about it in november), might as well post an update.
mastodon: decent replacement for my private twitter. great for rambling into the void and keeping up with friends, provided those friends are on there. my public twitter was more for entertainment than communication, and mastodon truly falls flat in that regard. as a result, tumblr has actually become my main replacement for that aspect of twitter.
pros: great filtering system, content warnings and alt text are part of the culture, you can subscribe to hashtags, not much value placed on popularity, decent mobile layout and 3rd party apps
cons: rules differ from server to server, your server's admins can suddenly decide to block the server your friend is on, the default desktop layout kinda sucks, finding any posts about your interests may be impossible, and reply guys are everywhere
cohost: technically has the best set of features to truly recreate the twitter experience, but text can be formatted like on tumblr and there's no character limit. absolute design nightmare and none of my friends are active on there, so i've basically given up on it.
pros: if you want a tumblr-twitter hybrid and don't mind the cons, this sure is the website for you. has "pages" that are like if sideblogs and multiple account management had a baby. it's a single account but each "page" functions like a separate one? hats off tbh
cons: aside from the horrible design, i've heard their terms of service and such were legally concerning. can't verify this.
hive: bad idea. wish i hadn't signed up for it
pillowfort: i've been on there for a long time, but only became active again last year and found it had improved slightly in my absence. progress is very slow because they're entirely user-funded. you know i love it, though: the as-yet missing features are totally worth the wait because they've got something no one else has: communities, like on livejournal or dreamwidth. this will absolutely become my main hangout one day, mostly replacing my private twitter (now mastodon) and the more personal aspects of tumblr.
pros: communities, per-post privacy settings, livejournal-style comments, very chill site culture, looks a bit like ye olde tumblr but less busy, planned features include dashboard filters and multiple account management
cons: doesn't have drafts and a queue yet (but they're coming soon!), activity is still low, memes and shitposts can be found but there's a trend towards more long-form essay content (which is not in itself a bad thing, i'd just like to see both)
in conclusion, i haven't found a 1:1 replacement for anything. ultimately, i'm betting on PF becoming a mix of what my private twitter used to be (a safe space) and how i remember the early days of tumblr (a place to connect with people and have good-faith discussions). present-day tumblr will replace my public twitter as a major source of mindless entertainment, and i'll occasionally check in on mastodon to keep up with one or two friends.
where the majority of fandom will migrate to is anyone's guess. if it were pillowfort, i'd be more inclined to actively participate than just lurk because the site structure seems to genuinely encourage level-headed discussion.

Yep, the bird site is being a steaming pile of shit again
I've been ready to leave Twitter for over a year now, but I haven't, because Everyone is on there. My social media usage is based on the social aspects, so I'm not that picky when it comes to the technical side of the platform, as long as it WORKS. Which Twitter most definitely is not doing.
I have accounts pretty much everywhere. This one, Pillowfort, Mastodon, Instagram, even DreamWidth! And Discord too, of course. So far it looks like the most viable alternative to Twitter on the OFMD fandom is Discord, because at least a lot of Canyonites are being active on several servers.
I miss the good old days of LiveJournal and IRC.

With the knowledge that about 75% of Twitter's staff is leaving rather than deal with a mercurial Musk (and who can blame them), I am curious to know what Twitter will look like in the future.
I don't think Twitter will fully die, at least not immediately. I know there will be glitches and there will be technical issues in the short term. There will probably be outages. There might be continued hullabaloo about the verified check marks, and they might be done away with entirely.
This will likely drive the big names off the platform, if they haven't left already. Plenty of people will do what they did during the 2018 Tumblr porn ban: move to other platforms. I kinda doubt that mastodon or pillowfort will really take off, but they will definitely be alternative options. Hell, even Tumblr as a micro-blogging platform would be a viable option, as we have already seen a lot of returning users and even new folks.
I don't think we can assume the "fall" of Twitter will exactly mirror Tumblr's minor one a few years ago, but I do have theories. Musk will do as much damage as he can legally do without destroying the site entirely, then claim bankruptcy and pawn the site off to some other tech schmuck. He will probably lose a lot of money but he probably won't be ruined by it. Twitter will linger, there will be the stubborn folks who stick around because it still does its job, mostly, and if they manage to keep the FTC off their backs about it, there probably will still be pornographic images a-plenty. Though if they manage to piss off enough people the porn exodus will begin anew.
If Twitter is lucky, it might be bought by someone who's actually willing to do hard work to make the site useable. Once the celebs, politicians, and big name authors are scared off, it might actually be a usable site. There will be a contingent of people who will not leave until the lights are shut off.
Which is the future if Twitter is unlucky. If it makes itself non-profitable, I'd bet dollars to donuts that it goes the way of ff.net: slowly fading away as everyone migrates to better platforms, and then announcing the day they can't keep the servers running.
I see that as a very unlikely future however. Honestly, if Elon actually wanted to "clean up" Twitter and just shut his mouth for two seconds and listened, as far-fetched as that possibility might be, he probably could wait out this backlash, hire some new folks, and just let the site do its thing. Twitter doesn't really have a copy that does what it does. There's not a good enough knock-off yet, and there's certainly not a high-profile site that has the same function.
But really, maybe that's a good thing. Between deranged celebs, insufferable politicians, idiotic "personalities", and millions of ads and advertisers, the site has been awful to navigate for years now. Its trending topics are our morning news. Its scandals shape our lives, unfortunately, and it shouldn't. So much of it is not self-curated but rather algorithmically fed to us to keep us in a state of outrage or despair.
So maybe it should die. But I don't think it will. The scaremongering will disappear as the holidays encroach and we stress about other things, and Twitter will or will not sort its shit out. Musk might get by a lawsuit or two but he'll probably avoid all consequences of fucking over the lives of several thousand people, and I'll probably still go on Twitter for the fanart.
In the meantime, let's sit back and see how long it takes this dumpster fire to fizzle out.

So I read the first book in the Foreigner series for the first time.
here is my notes as I was reading this book and as such, please be warned that some of these notes contain Spoilers of this 600 ish paged book that was published in 1994. (note: I am copy and pasting this from my Pillowfort from July the 31 and yes spoilers are here and swearing)
Book/part 1
The oh shit moment part 1 or as the best quote "God had no more Data"
The oh shit moment part two the panicking part 1
The oh ship shit part 3 the panicking part 2
The ship now is trying to hide the shittening by seeking out an emergency planet
Book/part 2
The natives see a human made UFO, medieval astronomer style. Manadigi is introduced
The humans are now in the planet exploring a bit from the ship for a colony base under the Guild.
A Manadigi seeing the humans making buildings with machines and are spying on the humans.
Humans start looking around at everything they can get there hands on like wild life and Ian finds a native and goes along with in a surrendering kind of way.
Patton Beranto is the father of Ian who really is understandable scared for his son who is with the native who has a radio on him. They are in a cave
Manadigi is with Ian and the latter is a bit tired and stressed. They do have a friendship going on though when they both learn each other's names.
Book/part 3
Bren is introduced as a character of the series after shooting an intruder who was trying to kill him with a gun that was hidden. Banichi is introduced right before Jago his bodyguards. Having to hide the gun that would be illegal to have. Tabini is introduced and bren is much frustrated at the rearrangement of the room. The aveti are particular about the numbers to a superstitious degree and tabini is a described as irreligious by the text. The aveti are described as surprising polite and likes negotiations more despite the option to be violet they could suggest in there euro-asian inspired culture. The assassin also no one filed intent. Tabani was a couple of weeks ago had been with bren and taught him to shoot the gun. Banichi gives him two keys to keep the traps from fucking him up. Bren is also conformed to have brown hair NOT FUCKING BLONDE LIKE THE DAMN COVER OF THE BOOK MAKES IT LOOK LIKE FOR FUCK SAKES, also Jago is fascinated by his hair.
Bren is in the office with Jago outside. The relationships are described as interlocking ones. You don't get an assassination unless you file for intent (could be described as a transcript or check on who ordered the assassination). Brens job is more described as someone who is a translator. Bren your suspicious acting a little something between you and tabini And you are Kind of a nervous wreck. He also under table gets paranoid as all he'll. Asks Jago if she plays cards and she hasn't , numbers numbers obsession everywhere also the mail is still missing. Trust is technically not real  but described more as "webs of associations " . He is made to go to bed, the gun still in bed and him thinking about 21 years ago the war of the landing that caused the treaty happened by tabinis fourth removed predecessor for 200 years and the human station that got them here was still in space. The atevi do not trust humans. References golden eggs in patience even though he never seen a goose.
He is given breakfast by Banichi and mail. He thinks of his mother who was a teacher and has a few sons. Find out he is going to be sent to Malguri to be with Tabini's grandmother into the interior of the continent that no human has gone before. Get sent on a tram after much protesting to the idea before realizing surrendering is a better idea. Nervous despite the fine things but luckily banichi and Jago are going with him, he is panicking though and trying to think of a way to not loose control. Okay tabini's grandma sounds like a power hungry bitch and I haven't even seen her, also filled with a lot or rage , (kind of like the old ladies my mom dealt with on the job sometimes as a nurse) broke her shoulder, arm and four ribs and still kept riding at age 72 and attacked a riding concert manager with a riding crop. The building they go too looks like something that had never been built after the humans arrived and sounds more like a Gothic castle. Maigi and Dijnana are introduced as the servants. Feels trapped in an under technology advanced house on a stormy night.
Woke up with a bit of a fantasy to escape and had four courses of food. Illisidi appears and angry as hell. Cenedi brings her tea (poor bastard) to the angry can wielding old lady. She is so mean to this poor guy. Threw her tea into the fire. and then he got poisoned
Woke up after tea poisoning and found out the tea had a fuck ton of alkaloids. Feeling really frustrated with everything. Starts being paranoid at everything and losing control and trying to come up with ideas about why tabini would send him there.
Dijnana has to deal with a passive aggressive rant from Bren and Banini needs to stop being so damn distant with bren luckily bren dose confront him , unfortunately kind of doesn't get far but has banichi worried. Jago gose talk with him and has a better talk that points out something that sounds like affection.
Gets into a passive aggressive argument with illisdi and is caught to be dragged out side the house by illisdi. They meet a mecheita and he is made to ride one to his displeasure. His is named Babs Got injured while riding. Noting that the animals act like pack hunters. Also remembering an argument from tabini that eating food out of Season was weird. Thinks this might have all been a test on him. (This is becoming more like an kaon like thing to get out of a mind set) bren now feels a bit safer, (also I just love this part as you can tell)
He is with the alien camels and accidentally scares a child who asks for ribbons. Managed to come up with a lie to the tourists about how he got there and the tourists were definitely a breath of fresh air. But then a murder happened and he was dragged back inside. Banichi managed to maybe reveal a link between brens attacker and him while pointing out the assassin license would get fucked over. Bren causes a panic when he accidentally sets off the alarm by opening the window.
Bren apologize to illisidi profusely about the alarm fuck up. Jago got into a fight and finally got the mail he was promised. He gets a interview with a television crew. Gets into a line of thought and conversation with Jago and then gets a letter from Cenedi
Gets downstairs for a meeting with cenedi and panicking. It is bad news tabini did send him there on purpose and for his own reasons and cenedi is a scary mother fucker with the questioning
He captured, great. And they probably know he was the one who fired the gun  lovely. ~Hello interrogation goddammit~. There hoping to turn him into a political tool fucking fantastic. Okay what the fu k did illisidi mean by' joined the the space station'?!
The fuck ship is fucking back fan fucking tactic. Oh and now there is a political panic fucking great now he hast to get out of the malguri Gothic manor hi is in. The babs and others could though get him through.
He is having to be on a hike with illisdi guard. Well fuck the manor explodes and now he freaks out emotionally.
He is still with illisdi is canon's confirmed to be a chaotic neutral or good. Jago, banichi and bren reunited but banich is really badly injured and holy hell is everything fucked.
Well this reads like a nervous breakdown fanfucking tactic. Luckily they are in wigairiin
He did find a plane but had to watch brominandi beat up everyone for the computer.
God what fucking great way to end the story. I fucking love it with tge plans to contact the ship, everyone okay, illisdi being Less of a mean old batch, the polyamory coded shit and being chill for two seconds.
