The Little Prince
I said after episode 5x04 of FTWD that I wanted to do an analysis of The Little Prince. They keep showing that work on for FTWD. I started reading through the plot line in depth last week and immediately started pulling out important things. I think you’ll all be super excited by what I’ve found. I know I am.
Tumblr media
So The Little Prince is about a boy who crashes his plane in the Sahara desert. While there, he meets another little boy known only as the little prince. The little prince is from another planet and most of the book is him telling his story to the narrator (the one who crashed his plane).
At first, I thought the little prince represented Beth. But the more I looked into it and as the symbolism, the more I felt sure the little prince is actually Daryl. In truth, he has attributes of both, but he’s more Daryl than Beth. You’ll understand as I go along.
So, here goes. The narrator of the story becomes a pilot and his plane crashes in the desert, far from civilization. This is especially important in FTWD because we literally had a plane crash at the beginning of the season. And I talked last week about how I think this plane crash represents Beth being shot.
The narrator has eight days of water and must fix his plane within that time, or he will die of thirst.
That eight is especially important. Not only have we seen a lot of eights, but specifically we saw one behind Beth in WHAWGO, and I've theorized before that it represents the passage of eight years that we've seen recently with the time jumps. Not to mention, Beth equals water and this is about being out of water.
Tumblr media
In FTWD, they have a plane that doesn't run. In the last episode, Dylan suggested that perhaps they could fix the plane. So, in terms of the plot of Fear, you can see the similarities to the story.
While in the desert and trying to fix his plane, the narrator meets the little prince. The prince specifically has golden hair (blonde) a little laugh, and will repeat questions until they are answered. Again, the blond was part of the reason I first thought he represented Beth. He definitely can represent Dylan, who also has blonde hair.
Tumblr media
So over the eight days stranded in the desert, while the narrator attempts to repair his plane, the little prince recounts the story of his life. So check this out:
“The prince tells of his love for a vain and silly rose that began growing on the asteroid's surface some time ago. The rose is given to pretension, exaggerating ailments to gain attention and have the prince care for her. The prince says he nourished the rose and attended her, making a screen or glass globe to protect her from the cold wind, watering her, and keeping off the caterpillars.
Although the prince fell in love with the rose, he also began to feel that she was taking advantage of him and he resolved to leave the planet to explore the rest of the universe. Upon their goodbyes, the rose is serious and apologizes that she failed to show she loved him and that they'd both been silly. She wishes him well and turns down his desire to leave her in the glass globe, saying she will protect herself.
The prince laments that he did not understand how to love his rose while he was with her and should have listened to her kind actions, rather than her vain words.” (Source)
Okay, the rose is described as vain and pretentious, which we know Beth was not. But there was a time that Daryl didn't respect her and thought she was kind of a silly girl. This section is why I think the Little Prince is Daryl. The rose he loved represents Beth. The prince nourished the rose and attended her
Tumblr media
making a screen or glass globe to protect her from the wind and cold (the funeral home)
Tumblr media
watering her. (We see her with water bottles, but I also wonder if this couldn't refer to the moonshine)
Tumblr media
and keeping off the caterpillars.
Tumblr media
(Ladybug, but still.)
I also think it's important that it says she turns down his desire to leave her in the glass globe, saying she will protect herself. We saw all kinds of foreshadows at Grady about Beth having to be on the outside and learn to protect herself. And Rick specifically asked everyone at Grady if they wanted to come with TF. They all refused and decided to stay behind.
Tumblr media
I especially love the line about the prince not knowing how to love his rose while he was with her. How many times has Norman or tptb said that Daryl didn't understand what he felt in S4?
I’ve said many times that what he's learned in the interim, since S5, having lost people like Denise and seeing so many of his family lose their significant others (Glenn, Jesus, most recently Rick) and witnessing other relationships like that of Dwight and Sherry, has helped him to understand what he felt for Beth. Even if he truly didn't understand what he felt back in S4 or what to do about it, I believe he does now. Of course, in his mind, Beth is dead, so it's a moot point.
Next, the story talks about how the prince has visited other planets, each of which was inhabited by a single, irrational, narrow-minded, adult. There's a king with no subjects, who only issues orders that can be followed (such as commanding the sun to set, which it always does. I'm not positive about who this corresponds to in the show, but I'm sort of thinking the Governor. Because of the chess piece, he thought he was the king, but didn't have any true subjects.
Tumblr media
Then there's a narcissistic man who only wants the praise which comes from admiration and being the most admirable person on his planet. I'm kind of thinking Negan.
Tumblr media
There are several others and I'm not sure that I can connect every single one of them to a person on TWD, but they all have interesting characterizations. The point is, Daryl has run into such characters since losing Beth, just like the little prince did after leaving his rose behind.
Then things get super-interesting. The prince encounters a row of rose bushes and realizes the rose he loved wasn't as unique as he'd originally thought. In other words, she wasn't the only rose in the universe. He becomes very sad and feels like she lied to him.
Then he meets a fox. The fox desires to be tamed, and teachers the prince how to tame him. The fox explains that by being tamed, something goes from being ordinary and just like all the others to being special and unique. Of course there are drawbacks as the connection can lead to sadness and longing one apart.
This struck me as very profound because so many of us have talked for so long about how Beth tamed Daryl from his wildness. And in many ways, that’s synonymous with falling in love.
From the fox, the prince learns that his rose was indeed unique and special because she was the object of the prince’s love at the time. He tamed her, and now she was more precious than all the roses he'd seen in the garden. The fox also tells him that important things can only be seen with the heart, not the eyes.
Right after landing on earth, the prince met a snake who said he had the power to return the prince to his home, should he ever wish to go. Hmm. A snake that can reunite separated lovers. Interesting.
Tumblr media
After that, the prince met two people from Earth. One of them what a railway switch man (just reminded me of the railroad tracks we so often see, especially in WHAWGO) and a merchant who invented a pill that eliminated the need to drink (another water reference).
Tumblr media
Then the story returns to the present, where the prince is telling his story to the narrator. It is the eighth day of after the narrator's plane crashed and they’re dying of thirst. The prince has become visibly morose and saddened for his recollections. He wants to return home to see his flower.
Then the prince finds a well, saving them both. So once again we have water saving people from something. But an apartment singular.
Later, the narrator finds the Prince talking to the snake, discussing his return and his desire to see his rose again. He worries because she has been left to fend for herself.
“The prince finds a well, saving the pair. The narrator later finds the prince talking to the snake, discussing his return home and his desire to see his rose again, whom he worries has been left to fend for herself. The prince bids an emotional farewell to the narrator and states that if it looks as though he has died, it is only because his body was too heavy to take with him to his planet.
The prince warns the narrator not to watch him leave, as it will upset him. The narrator, realizing what will happen, refuses to leave the prince's side. The prince consoles the narrator by saying that he only need look at the stars to think of the prince's lovable laughter, and that it will seem as if all the stars are laughing. The prince then walks away from the narrator and allows the snake to bite him, soundlessly falling down.
The next morning, the narrator is unable to find the prince's body. He finally manages to repair his airplane and leave the desert. It is left up to the reader to determine if the prince returned home, or died.” (Source)
So, basically the prince has to die in order to return home. In terms of this being something of a parable or fable, this is obviously a symbol for death. People often talk about death as the person “returning home.” But in terms of Beth, how interesting is this?
The things that jump out to me are that the prince says if it LOOKS like he’s died, not to worry, because he hasn’t. Not only can we apply that to Beth, but to every death fake out we’ve had on the show. It LOOKED like Glenn died, even to the audience, but he didn’t. It LOOKED like Rick died, to TF, but he didn’t.
Tumblr media
And it certainly LOOKED like Beth died, but…
And then there’s the line about his body disappearing. Think about that. HIS BODY FREAKING DISAPPEARED! And they keep showing this book in FTWD as though it’s a symbol or template of some kind.
Now, granted, I think this will definitely apply to FTWD as well as TWD. As I discussed a few days ago, even Madison had a death fake out and maybe this will lead to her character’s return. Of course there’s also all Daniel’s death fake outs to consider. And if Al leaves with the helicopter people, her group may believe her dead as well.
But the point is that this lines up with Beth and Daryl much more precisely than another character on either show. And I find that highly significant. Thoughts?

I do love that in The Walking Dead they now keep in mind i know very little about the show but whenever i see pictures of Norman Reedus’ character all i can think of is
1. I’m still fucking angry about the fact that they literally invented a character that didn’t even fucking exist at all in the comics JUST so they could cast Norman Reedus as someone, and i’m even angrier that fans of the show ate him up so heartily 2.On the other hand, i am still laughing about the fact that they deliberately changed Glenn’s death to make it this made-up character’s fault in some misguided attempt to generate angst and sympathy for him. Good going, Daryl, ya fucking killed Glenn. What an asshole.

Doesn't her wild claims about starting Caryl remind anyone of someone else's claims that she invented Rickyl?! Also I am so over this whole mess! Pretty sure that same person has been in my asks all day. Really all YNB had to do was NOT add her harmful and unnecessary "baby boy vibes" comment but apparently we all interpreted it wrong! (And ftr according to my anon troll, I can't make a parallel to a candlelight dinner two eps apart but Dareus will happen bc Moonlight won best)
This is w3hat i don’t get - WHY did she make the “baby boy vibes” comment in the first place? She claims she was trying to point out it proved Carol was his safe space. - so why then did the baby boy comment start with “BUT”?
I ship Caryl still, BUT.... baby boy vibes.
If it’s a but to what you just said, then it’s obviously in some way negating or contradicting or is in some negative to what comes before “but”.
So if it wasn’t meant to be a reason not to ship Caryl, or ship Caryl less - why say BUT?
Why bring up the baby boy vibes at all? Especially when she’d had a conversation on twitter just 2 weeks earlier how they definitely were not a mom/son relationship, and how offensive it is that people say that but ship B8thyl happily.
I mean I gave Norman a hard time over the mom/kid thing, because it was a stupid thing to say, but at LEAST I knew WHY he said it (he was explaining his acting choice). But I cannot fathom why YNB brought it up or where she was going with it before she was interrupted.
You know what, this is bugging me so I’m going to transcribe exactly what was said:
YNB: “God you guys, yes I do, but let me say this, I am still the number one Caryl shipper but I did notice something in that episode when he says to her “why did you leave?” for the first time I felt like baby boy vibes, I felt little baby vibes...”
CH: “I think that ship’s sailed.. I don’t know if that’s coming back-”
YNB: “How dare you?! Wait a minute Chris Hardwick, I’m not done that’s the first part of my statement. Now the second part of my statement is this, I may be delusional, I might be flying this ship, this flag on this ship by myself  - imma be a Caryl shipper until the day I die. SO I don’t care what happens on the show, in my mind, IN MY MIND, they together making sweet, sweet love.”
Now to me, looking at that fully, with the “baby boy vibes” what is says to me is either she was saying a) the show is making Daryl out to be a kid, so he’s too immature for Carol or b) the show is making their dynamic kid and mom, so they’re probably not going to do it in the show - therefor she still ships, even if it’s not happening on the show.
That’s my interpretation of it. I can’t figure out ANY interpretation that’s her saying YES cos that episode showed how much Carol is Daryl’s safe place.
