(pt1) as to why first kill got cancelled but heartstopper got renewed: first of all, the fact that hearstopper is based off a comic means they know exactly where they are going so they have that base, and if you look at the numbers, it made sense that heartstopper was going to get renewed quickly. it's unfair that first kill got cancelled, i hate how netflix looks at the numbers and decides what is worth keeping, but it is what it is. there is no use comparing the two shows, since-
(pt2)- since they are completely different stories, different genres, they have pretty much nothing in common plot-wise. one is a slice of life romance, the other is a supernatural vampire show (with romance, as all vampire shows have). it's unfair to compare them, or to say that heartstopper only got famous bc the protagonists are mlm and that people hated first kill bc it's wlw. most ppl who didnt watch/like first kill it's bc they dont like vampires or they just didnt like the plot
Hi there anon! Thank you for your message. It’s so fn late where I’m living and I was gonna go to sleep when I saw the news, but I wanted to let this out of my chest. Sorry if I don’t express myself correctly of it doesn’t make sense lmao, I’ll try to write my thoughts as best as I can haha
Sooo I don’t really know much about Heartstopper, just that it’s a wholesome series and the representation they have is so beautiful, I could relate myself to the characters so much bc I have lived similar moments to what they represent in the series. You’re right about that. Yes, they are completely different shows/stories… but do you know what they have in common? They are queer representation. Those shows are made for us, they present the struggles we live everyday as a queer person, the genres of the shows, the vampire thing doesn’t really matter when it comes to queer representation. What it does matter is that that representation is made correctly.
What I am mad about is that there are shows with wlw representation that get canceled right away without renewing, it makes me so mad because I am a woman, I watched and loved First Kill because I relate more to those characters than with the ones with Heartstopper. I am mad because I could see myself in the protagonists of the series… the struggles I have lived as a girl/woman finding myself and realizing I like women too. And I am a bit biased since I’ve been going through this difficult time of accepting myself and seeing First Kill, seeing how despite of being “supernatural” or a “vampire show”, the queer life in the series is so normalized it makes you feel it is normal to be you.
I’m getting a bit side tracked haha, but what I mean and what I’ve seen on twitter too is that we need to compare the shows that Netflix and other companies are making and we’ll see there’s still a preference. Two gay white men as protagonists get renewed while two lesbian protagonists, one black woman, doesn’t get renewed? I am mad about that. Why can’t we get more wlw representation? Girls being girls and simply falling in love without sexualizing them. The series has its own issues but it was a problem from the start, when they decided to give it a small fn budget and no marketing at all. I hadn’t even realized this show existed until I saw it here on tumblr. That also says something, don’t you think? I won’t be getting into more detail bc I am tired but I’ll be sharing a lot on my tumblr so feel free to read the posts I reblog! I just hope one day we could get queer representation for all of us, with no preferences between the community
