Friday, 1908 Dear Journal,
Today started early with Mama rousing me and Pa before the sun for Si's wedding. Si, true to form, seemed uninterested, bored even, as we made our way to the church yard.
Despite a soggy autumn, today turned unexpectedly pleasant. Clear skies, a welcome break from the week's thunderstorms. However, I think Ma is stressed, she kept nagging about walking with my skirt up to avoid dragging it through the mud....
The ceremony was small, Only Josephine's parents and Jackson with his fancy wife, bothered to show. I tried my best to focus on Mama's words from yesterday, And I could see why Jackson favored her.
Skinny, porcelain pale, dripping in expensive jewelry....everything I am not. However, as Josephine graced us with her entrance, any inkling of comparison vanished.
Radiance enveloped her, surpassing the boundaries of mere beauty. She embodied something ethereal. A sunlight aura surrounded her, and I found myself akin to a sunflower, unable to avert my gaze.
Even Si seemed genuinely happy, I saw him smile from ear to ear, he clasped her soft delicate hands, and caressed her cheek.
It was a sight to see, physical or emotional affection have never been his forte, not even in our childhood.
He was initially furious with Pa over the prospect of marrying Josephine. I remember his enraged shouts, echoing from the parlor.
Confidentially, Journal, I've noticed his practiced performance of donning the façade of a gentleman and a devoted son, particularly when in Mr. Coombes' presence.
Whether genuine or an act, my earnest prayer is for him to treat Josephine with the respect she deserves. I hold a genuine fondness for her, and I welcome her warmly into our family.
Lucile Harrington

The thunderstorms on Hallow's Eve brought an early chill to Henford. It wasn't bone-chilling cold, but enough to raise goosebumps and warrant longer, woolen skirts. After a day filled with wedding rehearsals, Edith and Josephine lingered behind for a chat, while Daniel returned home to attend to work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One might have expected the soon-to-be-married couple to seize this opportunity to deepen their connection. Instead, Silas remained somewhat distant and took note of Josephine's growing friendship with Lucile. Frequently they absconded the farm duties to stroll among the ancient ruins deep within the Bramblewood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silas couldn't help but roll his eyes as he observed his sister repeating the same behavior she had exhibited countless times with Jackson during their childhood—darting away to befriend visitors who were essentially there for him.

Silas meandered through the house, the weight of his father-in-law's ultimatum pressing on his thoughts. He had initially hoped this marriage would remain a perfunctory arrangement, envisioning Josephine as a mere presence beside him at night and during meals.
But now he realized the truth of it all. "I should have seen this coming," he conceded internally. "Daniel chose me as a last-ditch effort to marry off his daughter since I have the potential to rise above being a simple farmer. "
Tumblr media
Josephine had become a blemish on her father's otherwise pristine reputation, an embarrassment to his affluent name. "No matter," Silas resolved. "For now, my focus must be on concocting something impressive enough to wedge my foot into the industry's door, and what better way to impression a man in high society than keeping his daughter happy."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lost in thought, he ascended to the top floor. Most of the house had been meticulously decorated, save for an empty guest room and a room that appeared to be a spacious nursery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He sneered at the sight and then continued to explore his future bedroom. The room was exquisitely adorned with a large double bed beside a fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what truly delighted him was the private office that Silas would have for himself.
Silas sighed with relief as he entered the enclosed space. It featured a handsome desk next to walls adorned with bookshelves. "Finally," he thought, a glimmer of hope lighting up his mind. Here, he would have an area where he could be alone and free from unwelcome intrusions.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, below on the porch, Edith and Helena meandered away for a leisurely stroll around the farm, leaving Lucile and Josephine to engage on their own. Lucile felt the familiar weight of her shyness creeping upon her, apprehensive about shattering the impeccable facade of poise she had been meticulously taught to uphold. She steeled herself, determined to embody the perfect lady she had always been expected to be. Unbeknownst to her, her teacup rattled nervously against the saucer she held.
"You needn't do that," Josephine's voice, syrupy sweet, broke the silence, taking Lucile by surprise. "O-oh! Whoops!" Lucile stammered, her embarrassment evident. Josephine had briefly been in Lucile's company during their childhood, but they had never had the opportunity to sit down and engage in unhurried conversation.
Tumblr media
Josephine smiled, her warmth putting Lucile at ease. "You need not fret. I adore your dress. Did you make it yourself?"
Lucile smiled back, and an unexpected sense of relaxation washed over her. "Well, yes however It's not nearly as splendid as your exquisite gown."
Josephine chuckled. "Nonsense. I greatly admire the craftsmanship you've put into your dress. In my opinion, creations fashioned by one's own hands are more impressive than any store-bought gown."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soon, the two young women were chatting as if they had been friends since childhood. To her delightful surprise, Lucile discovered that Josephine shared her passion for painting. In turn, Josephine reveled in the conversations with someone as carefree as herself.

The town of Finchwick was alive with excitement as Love Day approached. The warmth of spring had embraced the town, and the sky above was a beautiful canvas of bright blue with fluffy white clouds. The Owners of the shops that lined the square had prepared for the special day by adorning themselves with delicate white, pink ribbons and an abundance of vibrant flowers.
Tumblr media
Helena's heart swelled with anticipation as she thought about the upcoming outing. She couldn't recall the last time the entire family ventured into town together.
Tumblr media
Upon arrival, the Harringtons noticed a gathering of familiar faces, their smiles, and laughter adding to the vibrant atmosphere of Finchwick's town square.
Eddy's eyes widened in surprise as he took in the sight before him – the Gnomes Arms had undergone quite the transformation over the last decade. The rustic saloon he once knew was now replaced by a tall, sleek white building, adorned with proper roofing and pristine window shutters.
Tumblr media
Rose bushes and ivy draped gracefully along the archways, Gone were the candles and oil lanterns of the past, replaced now by tall electrical streetlights.
On the lawn white tea tables were arranged neatly under the shade of charming umbrellas, creating a cozy space for families to sit down and enjoy a leisurely tea time together. The tables encircled a quaint makeshift dance floor, where couples swayed to the music emanating from a nearby phonograph.
Tumblr media
he couldn't help but overhear the excited chatter of his wife and children. His mind was filled with mixed emotions as he pondered the changes happening in their town. Each step he took away from his farm felt like a step into a different era, a time he wasn't sure he was ready for.
Helena spoke cheerfully "Isn't it exciting, Eddy? The Gnomes Arms looks so charming! "
Eddy offered a faint smile, "I reckon it is. I just hope the inside still holds some familiarity."
Tumblr media
As the Harrington family approached the tea table, they spotted a familiar face among the crowd. It was Edith, she greeted them with a warm smile and excitement in her voice, "Good evening, Edward, Helena, My my! you and your children look divine!"
Tumblr media
Daniel strolled over, a warm smile on his face as he joined his wife. He turned to Eddy and Helena, speaking with enthusiasm, "In fact, this moment couldn't be more perfect."
Tumblr media
Edith chimed in, beaming with excitement, "Yes! We have someone we would like you to meet."
Eddy and Helena exchanged curious glances, wondering who their neighbors wanted them to meet. Silas and Lucile stood silent behind their parents looking intrigued.
Edith turned back calling out with a warm smile, "Josephine Dear! Come say hello!"

One serene afternoon, Edith fulfilled her promise to visit the Doyle household, accompanied by her husband Daniel, and their two children. The arrival of the Coombes family brought a sense of warmth to the humble abode.
To Helena's pleasant surprise, Edith presented her with a thoughtful housewarming gift. It was an exquisite infant pram, adorned with delicate silk bedding and plush pillows in a pristine shade of white. The attention to detail showcased the Coombes's refined taste and hinted at their middle-class prosperity.
Tumblr media
Helena, Edith, and their children gathered in the parlor, finding comfort in each other's company. Meanwhile, Eddy guided Daniel to the sturdy kitchen table, ensuring a private space for their conversation away from the prying ears of the women.
Helena cradled Silas in her arms, carefully transferring him into Edith's waiting embrace. A soft smile graced her lips as she introduced her newborn to her.
Edith's eyes sparkled with delight as she peered down at the bundle in her arms. "Oh, isn't he just the sweetest little thing!" she exclaimed, her voice brimming with joy and affection.
Helena nodded, her own smile widening. "Indeed, he is a lively one, always on the move. Takes after his father." she remarked
Tumblr media
Helena carefully lifted Silas from Edith's arms and tenderly settled him into the luxurious pram that adorned the corner of the room. The soft, white bedding cocooned the baby, creating a picture of serenity amidst the flickering glow of the fireplace.
With Silas settled, Helena and Edith, accompanied by Edith's daughter Josephine, gracefully seated themselves on the plush couch, their silhouettes highlighted by the warm, dancing flames.
Meanwhile, Edith's son, Jackson, unable to contain his excitement, began to bob and twirl in a playful dance of his own. His infectious enthusiasm filled the air, joyous energy that seemed to radiate throughout the room.
Tumblr media
The two women exchanged knowing glances, their eyes filled with affectionate amusement.
Helena's voice carried a tone of heartfelt gratitude as she spoke, " "Edith, I cannot express my thanks enough. It was a true blessing for you to be by my side that fateful night. My own mother did not have the chance to prepare me for such challenges, but your presence and guidance brought me strength. And this splendid pram you have bestowed upon us, it is a precious gift indeed."
Tumblr media
Edith graciously replied, "It is truly no trouble at all, Mrs. Harrington. In fact, I find great comfort in knowing that we have good neighbors like yourselves in this secluded part of the town. As you may know, my husband, Daniel, is often away, fully engrossed in designing and constructing the new railway system that will connect our community to the rest of the world. During those times, I am left to my own devices. "
Helena's eyes were fixed attentively on Edith, her curiosity piqued by the mention of the railway system. In the midst of their pleasant conversation, there was a sudden realization that Edith's daughter, Josephine, had quietly slipped away from the parlor.
Tumblr media
Edith's countenance softened, her eyes filled with a mixture of regret and understanding. She gently shook her head, "Please accept my sincerest apologies for Josephine's impoliteness, Mrs. Harrington. You see, she has been rather temperamental lately ever since we commenced her lessons in women's etiquette."
Helena nodded empathetically, a compassionate smile gracing her lips. "I completely understand, Edith. Young girls can have their moods and moments. Josephine and I shall have another opportunity to connect and catch up on one another's company."

In the months that followed, the Harrington household witnessed an unprecedented flurry of activity. The once-quiet farm was now a hive of industry, with workers toiling tirelessly. Most of these laborers were brought in through the Coombes family's connections, a fact that weighed heavily on Eddy's mind. While he contributed what he could, it became increasingly apparent that the scope of the project exceeded what he initially expected.
Tumblr media
From dawn until dusk, workers hammered, sawed, and excavated, transforming Eddy's land. Barns were hoisted, relocated, and reconfigured.
Tumblr media
A grand wooden arch was erected at the farm's entrance, rustic and imposing, crowned by the massive horns of a longhorn bull. Yet, even this striking arch seemed insignificant compared to the towering edifice that was taking shape on his property.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eddy's beloved garden found a new home to the left of the house, near the well, while the outhouse was shifted to the right. Piece by piece, the familiar landmarks of his farm were shuffled aside to make room for the looming mansion.
Tumblr media
The newly constructed farmhouse, coated in a vibrant shade of red, featured white-painted woodwork adorned with ornate arches.
Daniel and all his contractors insisted it was indeed a Farmhouse but Eddy has grown skeptical.
Tumblr media
By mid-autumn, the towering mansion stood as a testament to the whirlwind of change that had swept over the land. In just a few short months, nearly everything had been altered. This new house was a colossus compared to the one Eddy had lovingly crafted with his own hands and everything he had built has been moved and pushed aside.
Tumblr media
The reality of what exactly the term "little" meant in the context of his dealings with Daniel was dawning on him, Eddy knew Daniel loved Josephine despite the mistakes she had made and knew she was bound to get doted on with the new marriage. But this? This was beyond excessive.

Amidst the ongoing construction, the Coombes family faithfully adhered to their weekly tradition of visiting the Harrington farm for tea. These gatherings provided opportunities for the affianced couple to converse, always under the watchful eyes of their families. It also afforded Mr. Coombes the chance to meticulously supervise the advancement of his daughter's future abode.
Tumblr media
both families assembled in their most presentable attire. Construction of the grand house was now complete, and only the final touches remained. Servants, employed by the Coombes family, bustled about ferrying furniture and the daughter's belongings into the impressive farmhouse.
Lucile made a valiant effort to maintain her composure, though her gaze was irresistibly drawn to the vast array of luggage and an eclectic assortment of objects being transported into the house.
Tumblr media
Her thoughts strayed momentarily to Jackson, the memory of their private dance flooding her mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She recalled the sensation of his body pressed against hers, the firm grip of his hands in hers. It was a memory that momentarily eclipsed the introductions and conversations around her, until the hearty laugh of Mr. Coombes punctuated her reverie, pulling her back to reality.
Tumblr media
Her attention shifted to Edith, who smiled serenely in silence as the two men conversed. Then, her eyes fell upon Josephine, radiant and demure, her hands clasped like her mother's. Yet, something seemed amiss. Josephine appeared tense, her gaze fixed straight ahead, seemingly distant from her future husband.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucile's gaze shifted once more, settling on Silas. His eyes seemed to wander away from the beautiful woman before him, almost as though she were merely invisible.
Tumblr media
While everyone else appeared content and oblivious, Lucile couldn't help but sense the awkward tension that hung in the air like a heavy mist.

Life on the bustling farm continued its relentless pace, demanding the utmost attention from the Harrington Family. With two spirited children and the constant pursuit of financial stability, their days were filled to the brim.
Helena found herself constantly on the move, darting from one floor to another, diligently ensuring that her little ones stayed out of mischief. The perpetual battle to maintain a tidy house seemed never-ending. Hungry bellies were a constant reminder, as were the never-ending laundry and the perpetual messes that needed tidying. And if one child caught a glimpse of the other receiving attention, tantrums were quick to follow.
Tumblr media
It was an exhausting endeavor. In an attempt to grant Helena some respite, Eddy had taken to involving Silas in the daily chores around the farm. Although still too young for hands-on tasks, Silas enjoyed spending time with his father, shadowing his every move. Eddy would regale Silas with tales of his work, and during Eddy's gardening sessions, Silas delighted in playing with the soil, his tiny hands happily immersed in the earth.
Tumblr media
Amidst the whirlwind of ceaseless tasks and precious little time for rest, the days seemed to blur together in a frenetic pace. Before Helena and Eddy could catch their breath, a significant milestone arrived: Silas's birthday! Six years had swiftly passed, bringing with them a world of change and growth. And not to be forgotten, little Lucile had also reached the tender age of two.
Tumblr media
In a bid to make Silas's birthday truly special, Helena and Eddy resolved to go all out and host a birthday party for their beloved son. Financial constraints prevented them from indulging in lavish decorations, an extravagant feast, or a pile of presents. However, their love and resourcefulness led them to a heartfelt solution: they would bake a homemade cake for Silas.
Tumblr media
Helena poured her heart into crafting a delectable honey cake, a labor of love that would be the centerpiece of the celebration. She extended a warm invitation to the Coombes household, who eagerly accepted, dressing in their finest attire for the occasion. As the Coombes arrived, laughter and merriment fills the air, and Silas and his friend Jackson reveled in the freedom of running and playing amidst the sprawling beauty of the Harrington property.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silas got the opportunity to have an introduction to Jackson's elusive sister, Josephine. Although Silas had caught glimpses of her during their childhood playdates, she had always remained distant, never engaging in conversation.
Jackson, ever the mischievous friend, attempted to coax Josephine out of her perfectly poised and reserved demeanor by teasing and playfully prodding her. However, his efforts proved futile, as Josephine chose to remain seated quietly at the table, contentedly enjoying a slice of cake.
Tumblr media
While Eddy couldn't afford to purchase a gift for Silas, his resourcefulness and craftsmanship came to the rescue. With scraps of wood and some spare rope lying around, Eddy set to work constructing a wooden swing set for the children to enjoy.
Silas's eyes widened with pure excitement as he laid his eyes on the newly constructed swing set. His joy knew no bounds, and without wasting a moment, he and Jackson eagerly hopped onto the swings, propelling themselves higher and higher into the evening sky.
