As much as i love the death guard and mortarion, a lot of the actual characters attached to the death guard im not particularly big on. the lords of silence are cool, kadex i have a weird degree of affection for as a pathetic lil comedy fly boy trying his best [despite the dude literally just being there to be a jobber distraction].

the actual major characters of the death guard though? ya got nathaniel garro and typhus and both can be best described as 'implacable plank of wood stoneface loyalist and asshole traitor edition respectively'. arguably its mostly due to a lack of time having been invested into actually developing or delving into these characters [typhus especially] but still these are the death guards two most readily identifiable characters in the warhammer 40k/30k setting. aside from mortarion they're arguably the faces of the death guard, and both of them are treated as if they're more so intrusive in the setting then actually wanted from a writing perspective.

and then what else do the death guard have? mortag i guess, but hes firmly a sideshow and then everyone else are either... asshole traitors who die sudden deaths to show off how serious things are or stonefaced loyalists who die sudden deaths to show off how serious things are. that and mortarion simps desperate for daddys approval, but thats at least incredibly funny and even kinda interesting.

well a daemon prince hes lower on the theoretical food chain then many in the death guard due to being a bit wimpy as far as daemon princes go and more prone to fighting at the back and subterfuge then leading by the front.

MALATHIAN THE HARVESTER:

relatively young great unclean one, he was once just a lil ol plaguebearer but nurgle liked the enthusiasm he had and bumped him up in the hiearchy hence why he kinda looks like a bloated version of one

his defeat by grand master vaurmand centuries past still knaws at him, even if vaurmand died in the process, so he insists on getting involved in mortarions reaper scheme and really any opportunity to kill grey knights because of it

MUNIFICUS THE UNDYING:

is a chaos spawn

probably became a chaos spawn after a particularly bad trip/attempt to reach daemonic ascension man

turned into a writhing mass of chaos spawn tentacles but showed a remarkable capacity for mutation and regeneration so the death guard kept it around as an attack beast effectively

when the time came for the reaper plan mortarion chose munificus as one of the reapers as he predicted a vast increase in its mutation and regeneration capabilities through the process

basically a big ol horrific dog abomination thing of a chaos spawn

in more pain then most chaos spawn because of its mutations and constant regeneration

MORGELLUS THE CORRODED PRINCE:

a nurgle soul grinder daemon engine thats risen to a command of its own thanks to its unusual intelligence

a construction of the 5th plague company poxmongers, the daemon bound inside the soul grinder was infact a daemon prince of the death guard, betrayed by his comrades due to inter legion politics and a desire by poxmonger warpsmiths and dark mechanicum allies to test daemon engine theories

what resulted was morgellus the corroded prince, a monstrously powerful daemon engine that easily broke free of any attempts to control it and retained the intelligence of the daemon prince bound within.

instead of going on a rampage it purged traitorous upstarts and took back command of its warband

morgellus considers itself a new being compared to its old form, technology and corrupted machine spirits intermingled with the old soul essence of the daemon prince. so much so that morgelluses old name has since been forgotten

likes to tinker with technology on its own and thanks to its machine nature it sports a deeper understanding then most on the matter of the dark mechanical arts

a weirdly pleasant thing to talk to that belies its dangerous combat potential

mortarion picked it as one of the reapers out of interest in seeing what it would do and out of need for a suitable vector for morgelluses particular pox strain

CRUCIATUS THE GENEROUS:

"m'lady" he says before spewing pus and laser death everywhere

a dreadblade that hung out with the death guard a lot because 'nurgle lads before slags' or whatever

ironically he earned that name before becoming nurgle infected, as the knight and its pilots when in imperial service were known to be overly considerate of their lesser allies and somewhat self sacrificial for the safety of others

its last pilot and the one who turned it to damnation ended up being abandoned by its own house and allies in a nurgle infested warzone swamp however which drove the pilot to despair and nasty nurgle sickness which quickly overtook the machine itself when the pilot pledged loyalty to nurgle

remerging as a dreadblade its once noble selflessness has been turned to a dark and twisted chivalric pride as it spreads nurgles gifts so that all may share in nurgles healing graces and smites those it deems unworthy or ungrateful of the opportunity.

mortarion made it one of the reapers as a reward for its services and because personally he finds its continuing knightly trappings somewhat annoying so better it go stomp on things he doesnt like.
