Wednesday 15th May - Day 9
Another moving on day today, so off to breakfast to fuel up for the day. Before leaving the UK I thought that I might loose weight on this holiday. That’s not happening! The food is plentiful and tempting and as for exercise it is almost non-existent .. most of our moving around is done by coach. Lots of the locals come to breakfast in the pyjamas provided by the hotel, each hotel seems to provide these, but in some they are just to use for the Onsen, whilst in others they can be used in all communal areas. In previous hotels they have been more stylish, here they are navy blue and look like a communist uniform!
A new bus driver today and we head off towards the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go. The village, mostly cut off until as recently as the 1960’s, is today famous for their traditional style of housing, the Gassho-Zukuri, which means ‘like praying hands’. The reason for the design of the properties is to withstand the weight of heavy snow that is common in the area. There were two properties open that we could look around, we visited the Wada family home, the house has been passed down through the generations since 1573, the family made their wealth in the potassium nitrate business and one of their family became the first Mayor of the village in 1888. The house is the largest property in the village and has 3 floors inside. The lower floor being used for general living and sleeping. A mezzanine floor above is where we could see them cultivating silk worms.
The houses are made without using nails as they would rust so the beams are roped together, this also allows a bit of movement in the high winds. The local government have become involved in the running of the village as it has become more of a tourist attraction since its elevation to World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1990. The roofs of the remaining 55 houses (originally 300 homes)must be reroofed with thatch which is very expensive, it costs between ¥ 1-3million so the villagers work together when the buildings need reroofing. There are no hotels in the village just some home stay opportunities or boarding houses which have paper screen doors .. so next to no privacy.
Next we moved on to Kanazawa, where we will be staying for the next two nights. Before heading to the hotel we went to the Omicho Market, unfortunately a lot of stalls were closed but we got to see some unusual seafood for sale. No photos though as the stall holders are extremely keen to stop any photos being taken! We went for lunch in a small Japanese restaurant in the market, which was recommended by Myumi. Shrimp tempura for Mike, an eel dish for both Bianca & Tracy (a Parkinson’s Lead Nurse from Hertfordshire!) and a Pork dish for me as I was concerned that some shell fish might slip into the dish and leave me bed-bound!
Todays last visit was to the ancient site of a samurai house, a historic house and garden in the Nagamachi district, this area has cobbled streets and canals and is situated in a wealthy district. The house belonged to the wealthy Nomura family who served the Maeda family between the 16-19th centuries. When the social class system came to an end many of these houses were destroyed. This home was saved as it was purchased by a wealthy businessman and is now owned by the city.
After checking in we decided to have a relaxing evening, popped to the seven eleven for a few bits to stop our stomachs rumbling overnight and got the blog up to date.

Osaka Guide: Kuromon Ichiba Market and Sennichimae Kitchenware Street
Discover fresh seafood and produce in Kuromon Ichiba Market and find all the Japanese kitchen tools and tableware you need at Sennichimae kitchenware street in Osaka.
In this Osaka travel guide, we’ll take you to Kurmon Ichiba Market to check out all the fresh seafood and produce Osakans has access to, and Sennichimae Kitchenware Street for all the Japanese kitchen tools and tableware you’re looking for.
We love visiting fresh food markets when we travel in Japan, besides Tsukiji in Tokyo which everyone is aware, most large cities in Japan has thriving traditional food markets (vs. supermarket). We’ve been to the traditional markets in Kanazawa, Takayama, Sapporo, and Naha just to name a few.
Kuromon Ichiba Market 黒門市場
Known as Osaka’s Kitchen, Kurmon Ichiba Market is conveniently located in the center of Osaka. It’s just a few minutes walk from Nipponbashi Station and you can also get there via Osaka Metro’s Namba Station. The JR Namba Station is quite a bit further so make sure you get off at the correct station.
You might wonder why we visit so many traditional markets when we travel around Japan. Frankly speaking, the seafood sections in the US supermarkets are quite tame and boring. We love learning about different seafood and the local or regional specialty ingredients that are in the markets and trying them as a family.
Japan is not a big country but each region has its own specialties and foods that are not easily accessible in other areas of Japan.
Entrance to Kuromon Ichiba Market
History of Kuromon Ichiba Market
The market has 190 years of history and there are over 150 stalls and stores to browse through. The market used to be called Enmeiji Market since it was near the Enmeiji Temple (destroyed in a fire). The temple had black gates (Kuromon in Japanese) and the market took on the nickname.
The market is where both Osakans and restaurants come to get their fresh seafood and produce, and only recently gainly popularity as a tourist hotspot. Ready to go check it out? Let’s go.
Food and Fresh Produce at Kuromon Ichiba Market
The stores in Kuromon Ichiba Market carries everything from Japanese pickled vegetables to mochi, but its main focus is on seafood with almost 30 seafood vendors.
When’s the last time you saw puffer fish/fugu for sale in your local market?
Another thing you might be surprised by is there are over 25 restaurants in the market, and many of the vendors will actually prepare and cook the food you purchased to be enjoyed right there. Can’t get any fresher than that! If you get tired of eating Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki in Osaka, Kuromon is the perfect place to explore your palates.
Seafood at Kurmon Ichiba
There is an abundant number of kinds of seafood to choose from, from freshly halved sea urchin and lobster to many types of sashimi.
Fresh sea urchin/Uni
Too much food to consume on the spot? If you live in Japan, you can buy some of the seafood and have it delivered to your home or office.
One of the larger seafood stores is Kuromon Sanpei, they have a large section of goods and also sliced sashimi ready to go for customers. Kuromon Sanpei is one of those shops where you can buy the seafood and they’ll cook it for you. Other popular stores include tuna specialty shop Kurogin Tuna Store.
Look at this sashimi… drool
Grilled eel/Unagi
Abalone and scallops
Buy and grill on the spot!
Meat and Fresh Produce at Kuromon
Seafood is the main featured product at Kuromon but there are about 8-9 meat and produce specialty stores each. Many of the shops at Kuromon has been there for decades and one of the meat shops with a long history is Manno.
If you are staying at an AirBnb, buy some Japanese beef and make Shabu Shabu for dinner. It’ll be an amazing meal to remember and considerable saving compared to a restaurant.
One of the regional dishes that varies a bit from region to region in Japan is Tsukemono – Japanese pickled vegetables (Read our Tsukemono Guide). If you like tsukemono, try the different varieties you don’t normally see outside of Japan. Some of the vendors will have samples for you to try before buying.
Japanese pickle vegetable tsukemono
Other Shops at Kuromon
Besides fresh produce and seafood, Kuromon market also has shops that sell sweets/mochi, rice, clothing, and flower. If you love food, spend some time in Osaka’s Kitchen and taste the fresh seafood it has to offer.
Sennichimae kitchenware Street 千日前道具屋筋
In Tokyo, you have Kappabashi for all the Japanese kitchen tool and tableware needs. If your travel only takes you to Osaka, don’t worry, you can still go to Sennichimae Kitchenware Street in Osaka. The official name is actually Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shotengai but I will refer it to kitchenware street so it’s easier for you to remember.
Where is Sennichimae Kitchenware Street?
Sennichimae Kitchenware Street is close to Osaka Metro Namba Station and Takashimaya Department store in Namba, however, it could be a bit tricky to find as the sign for the shopping arcade is not very obvious. Look for the street sign below on the metal pole if you’re lost in the alley, or look for the giant red Doguyasuji “道” sign at the end of the arcade.
While Kappabashi located on a large busy street, Sennichimae kitchenware street is mostly a covered shopping arcade. The nice part is that it provides some relief from the sun in the hot Japan summers.
Stores on Sennichimae Kitchenware Street
Sennichimae Kitchenware Street not only offer all types of kitchen gadgets but restaurant supplies as well.
Wooden plates and baskets
Whether you need the perfect seat cushion or bamboo basket, the selections are plentiful.
Interesting furniture and decor for restaurant and home
Need a giant banner or lantern for your restaurant?
They sell “Okonomiyaki Table” (it’s common for houses in Osaka)
Equipment for making Takoyaki and Taiyaki
Sword for cutting tuna in the knife shop
Lacquered goods shop including bowls and chopsticks
Chalkboards and signs for bars
Lastly, there are some stores that carry sampuru (サンプル, fake plastic food). If you’ve always wanted ramen bowls with noodles displayed on your shelf, you don’t want to miss them.
Fake food sampuru!
Tea shop
Thank you for reading our guide to Kuromon Ichiba Market and Sennichimae Kitchenware Street. It doesn’t take too long to browse through these areas so stop by on your visit to Osaka. We’ll see you soon America Village and Shinsaibashi to shop until you drop.

AUGUST  Rob Stark Nueva $$$$ 822 Washington Blvd
As you probably gathered from the name, this Venice cantina is quite new. Located in the old Sunny Spot space on Washington Blvd., Nueva is a Mexican restaurant that serves modern dishes like shakshuka ranchos in a corn tortilla, hamachi and uni ceviche, and tempura sea bass topped with cilantro aioli. And given the legacy of their building’s former tenants, yes, they’re doing brunch. They’re only available for takeout and outdoor seating for now, but with their brightly colored patio, Nueva is already shaping up to be one of the best places in town to drink watermelon shrub margaritas (six feet apart, obvs).
 Champion's Curry Champion's Curry - Little Tokyo $$$$ 136 Central Avenue
Alert the media (wait, isn’t that us?) Champion’s Curry arrives in Little Tokyo on 8/15. After a successful launch in Long Beach, the Japanese curry chain is opening their second U.S. location, and with a bigger space (and designated patio seating), there’s even more room to enjoy their signature Kanazawa-style curry - a thick, savory sauce that can be served on everything from chicken katsu and rice to a bowl of fries.
We checked out Champion’s in Long Beach, read our first thoughts here.
Anoush BBQ Anoush BBQ $$$$ 357 Arden Avenue
In perhaps the greatest crossover episode in history, this Glendale spot combines the distinct flavors of Korean BBQ with Mediterranean cuisine. Galbi and kimchi live on the same menu as lamb chops and basmati rice. Grills are filled with tiger prawns, lule kabobs, and filet mignon. And everything is available for patio dining. Which begs the question - why didn’t we think of this?
 Theia Theia $$$$ 8048 W. 3rd. Street
From tzatziki to house-made pita to full-blown mezze plates, Theía is a new Greek spot on West Third in Beverly Grove that has everything you need to recreate the trip to Mykonos you had planned this summer, including an outdoor patio space.
 Ichijiku Ichijiku $$$$ 5629, 1/2 N Figueroa St
Highland Park’s latest addition is Ichijiku, a neighborhood sushi bar that specializes in nigiri and hand rolls. Owned by the team behind Cafe Birdie and Ma’am Sir, the menu here is pretty compact - you’ll find all the standard cuts of toro, yellowtail, and blue crab, alongside slices of A5 wagyu beef and vegetarian rolls made with roasted red pepper and lotus root. Currently takeout only.
Crudo e Nudo $$$$ 7953 Santa Monica Blvd
Striped bass crudo, sustainably sourced ingredients, and a dash of racial justice? Maybe you really can have it all. Meet Crudo e Nudo, a new coastal Italian raw bar in West Hollywood. Operating out of Employees Only’s patio space on weekends, the focus here is on seafood sourced from local fisherman, like Pacifico striped bass and line-caught ahi. Plus, 10% of all sales goes directly to Black Lives Matter. So maybe order that extra round of crudo?

Lemme Smash Lemme Smash $$$$ 5151 W. Pico Blvd
Lascivious name aside, Lemme Smash is the latest entry into LA’s New Burger Universe. These smashed patties have everything you need when it comes to a burger - crispy-yet-juicy meat, thick buns, melted cheese, and a provocative name, but Lemme Smash also comes with a secret ingredient up their sleeve - cilantro on top. Takeout only.
 Market Tavern Market Tavern $$$$ 6333 W 3rd St #706
Now that international travel is, how you say, off the menu, if you’re in the mood for a traditional Sunday roast, you’re going to look domestically. But luckily, not too far - because Market Tavern opens in Hollywood this week. Located in The Original Farmers Market, this casual British pub serves everything from fish and chips to shepherd’s pie. Oh, and of course, Sunday roasts, and lots of beer. Outdoor patio seating available.
Modern Times Modern Times Beer: Leisuretown $$$$ 549 S Anaheim Blvd
Another day, another hilariously named Modern Times brewery: Joining the ranks of The Dankness Dojo and The House of Perpetual Refreshment is Leisuretown. Located in downtown Anaheim, this 33,000 square-foot behemoth is equipped with a full-scale kitchen, beer garden, mini-mart, and even a pool - which, for the record, is currently not open for swimming (but might be soon?)
march  Aliza J. Sokolow Violet Bistro $$$$ 1121 Glendon Ave
Westwood’s latest addition is Violet, a casual French bistro that also doubles as a culinary school. Everything here is charming and Très French, from the rustic, wooden interiors and a shaded patio out back, to the menu, filled quiche, steak frites, gougères (choux pastries with cheese), and pan-seared whitefish barigoule. The cocktail list follows suit, featuring, uh, French-ish drinks like the Monsieur Pimm and the Bloody Antoinette. Violet is open for lunch and dinner during the week, and does a weekend brunch from 9am-2pm.
Tree of Wishes $$$$ 7469 Melrose Ave
Forget Disneyland, if you really want your dreams to come true, head to Melrose Ave. Operating out of a cozy, West Hollywood-ish space, Tree of Wishes serves all kinds of Mediterranean fare, from meze like hummus and muhammara (a red pepper and walnut spread), to larger mains like branzino and casarecce with roasted eggplants and Kalamata olives. And if you’re like B.O.B. and could really use a wish right now, there’s a literal wishing tree out back. Just write down your hopes and dreams onto a ribbon, tie it to one of its branches, and hope that the forest gods will actually take away your adult acne.
LOVE Organic $$$$ 8205 Santa Monica Blvd
We found love in a hopeless place - which, in this context, means organic, vegan food in West Hollywood. This plant-based restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd. serves a variety of pan-Asian foods, such as Thai “wings” cooked in lemongrass, pad thai, chow mein noodles, and green curry dumplings, as well as an entire menu of fish-less sushi rolls, with ingredients like spicy tofu, seared trumpet mushrooms, and carrot tempura.
 Nomoo $$$$ 7507 Melrose Ave
Life is cyclical - the old replaces the new, Drew Barrymore now books mom roles on television, and the Johnny Rockets on Melrose has been taken over by vegan burgers. Nomoo (get it?), is a new plant-based restaurant that serves Impossible cheeseburgers and “hot chicken” sandwiches made with fermented seitan. Plus, 10% of their monthly profits are donated to an animal rights charity - which should make you feel better about all of the water you wasted taking that 40-minute stress shower last night.
 Krystal Thompson Pearl River Deli $ $ $ $ Chinese  in  Chinatown $$$$ 727 N Broadway #130
After starting as a pop-up, Pearl River Deli made like that tattoo you got while blacked out of broccoli conducting an orchestra (it’s Chopin Broccoli, and it was not funnier at the time) and has gone permanent. Located in a bare-bones space in the Far East Plaza (you might need to wade through the line at Howlin’ Ray’s to find it, F.Y.I.), this order-at-the-counter Chinatown joint is serving Cantonese dishes like char siu over rice, silky shrimp-and-egg scrambles, and Macau pork chops on pineapple buns.
We checked out Pearl River Deli and put it on our Hit List.
 Burgers 99 $ $ $ $ Burgers  in  Hancock Park ,  Hollywood $$$$ 131 South La Brea Ave
With shelves filled with ’90s NBA bobbleheads and Happy Meal toys, this retro smashburger spot hits the nostalgia button hard, and will transport you back to the days when you wore low-cut jeans and got dropped off at the mall in your mom’s Dodge Caravan. Owned and operated by the brothers behind Badmaash, this new burger joint on La Brea keeps it pretty simple - look out for single and double patties, a bacon burger, hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, fries, and milkshakes. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
We checked out Burgers 99 and put it on our Hit List.
La Camarona $$$$ 181 E Glenarm St
If the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words “Mexican seafood” is “I want more of it,” then La Camarona might just be for you. This new all-you-can-eat restaurant in Pasadena focuses on the flavors and cooking styles of the coastal state of Nayarit, which means hot and cold dishes like ceviches, aguachiles, steaks, and whole fried tilapia. Do not eat beforehand.
Pascal Shirley Hermanito $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Tacos ,  Mexican  in  Sawtelle Japantown ,  West LA $$$$ 2024 Sawtelle Blvd
Unlike hanging out with your actual little brother (for the record, this is a joke, Noah), Hermanito is a bar/restaurant where you might actually have some fun. Located on Sawtelle Blvd., this new neighborhood spot has a menu filled with “snaxxx” (their word, not ours) like chicharrones and shrimp sandwiches, and tacos served on Sonoran-style flour tortillas, as well as a variety of mezcal-filled cocktails.
We checked out Hermanito, read our first thoughts here.
El Prince $$$$ 2171 W Florence Ave
El Prince is a new Middle Eastern restaurant in Inglewood, and perhaps the first place we’ve ever covered inside of a Quick Mart. Located amongst rows of produce and cleaning supplies, this all-day Halal spot features plates of shawarma, kofta, and shish taouk (grilled chicken skewers marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, and garlic) served over rice or fries, as well as wraps made to order.

Visit local market during traveling has its own perks. 💛 Omicho Market in Kanazawa amazed me with not only fresh fruit and vegetables but also various fresh seafood (prominently big crabs that can be seen in many stores)! We found infamous sushi restaurant inside the market as well: Yamasan Sushi and Morimori Sushi. We tried to eat in Morimori Sushi Restaurant. IMHO, the sashimi there can compete with sashimi in Tsukiji Fish Market.. melting in my mouth!! And of course we tried crab soup! Then, unlike other markets, Omicho market sell gold leaf wrapped ice cream! Literally gold, made from gold!! This because Kanazawa produces most of Japan's high-quality gold leaf. . Kanazawa, 18 November 2017 morning. It was raining. . #localmarket #market #seafood #seacreatures #crab #omichomarket #kanazawa #japan #travelgram #travel #autumntrip #japantrip #holidays #morningwalk (at Omicho Market Kanazawa)

Kanazawa is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in Japan, and it is a favorite of mine. Known for its rice production and fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, the quality and selection of fine sashimi is outstanding. At a sushi restaurant near the famous Omi-cho market where we found these beauties: fresh abalone, uni, ebi, sake, toro, just to name a few. Each piece is equally delectable, and the best I have had so far. For the quality and contents, it is a great bargain for roughly ¥2500 to ¥3000 per bowl and comes with local rice and miso soup.

autumn in japan - day 1 - kaga onsen.
it seems to have becoming a thing where i am always in japan during autumn, but that’s completely fine because i love it! ehehe.. this short 5 days trip was awesome, reuniting and celebrating our wonderful friendship together again, hopefully we can do this every year~
my trip started off with an overnight flight from kl to tokyo, arrived at narita international airport in the morning, exchanged my jr pass from the ticket office and took narita express to meet my friends at tokyo station.
we then depart from tokyo station to kanazawa station via shinkansen, yay finally long distance bullet train ride, ehehe... and on the way there, the view is really nice with snow cap mountains, paddy fields, small townships, just so beautiful. also bought train bento on board, ehehe.. first time for everything. the bento comes with a proper good quality container which you can bring home, how cool is that...
anyway, i’m glad to be able to catch up among us during the train ride, it has been so many years since the four of us are together! girls time is indeed the best.
kanazawa station is huge and has lots of interesting stuff going on, but we didn’t look around much as we were catching a local train to kaga onsen, felt so excited on this journey. the sky is clear and so blue and just so beautiful and the air is crisp cool, just they way i love. at kaga onsen station, the hotel transport picked us up and finally we arrived at kaga yashio hotel 加賀八汐. this hot spring (onsen) hotel was booked by my lovely japanese friend, i was really happy to be able to stay at a traditional onsen ryokan for a night, onsen is one of my many favorite things about japan, lol...
the room is pretty spacious which can fit four futons comfortably and has a seating area too, there’s also an attached bathroom for convenience. they offer both indoor and outdoor onsen which is great. the hotel was occupied by locals mostly, which is a good thing, the staff are so friendly to us too.
after checking in, we went out again to katsusenshintoku 割鮮 しんとく. this is a local fresh seafood restaurant which has a fish stall at the ground floor and a restaurant on the first floor. you can pick the seafood you like from the fish stall and then they can cook it for you in whichever method you prefer. they even offer delivery service for all the fresh seafood within japan, it’s so cool.
we were really lucky that kobako crab (female snow crab) is in season, a kanazawa specialty. my friend ordered some to ship to her parents and they received it the next day! we also picked the live one for each of us, with squid, nodoguro (a local fish) and baigai (local plum shell fish) to be made into various dishes for dinner later.
we then head to kaga fruitland 加賀フルーツランド , wanting to visit the farms. we arrived around closing time which is too late to visit the farms, but the staff was very kind to offer us some freshly picked apples, which was super juicy, crispy and just so fragrant, definitely the best apples i have ever tasted i think.. and they also offer to sell us a huge bag (about 4 to 5kg worth) of freshly picked apples at only 500 yen, such a steal! we also managed to get lots of shiny maskat grapes which are super sweet and juicy at a steal too. that was apparently the last batch of grapes as the season has ended. i also bought some fruit jelly, which taste awesome, just like the real fruit, as souvenir, the package is just so pretty! and it’s very very reasonably priced. would definitely love to come back again during other fruits season.
after spending some time here and have a great chat with the people and enjoyed the freshly picked apples, we went back to the seafood restaurant for dinner as the sun sets. the view is so pretty from first floor as we are able to see the sea. my friend ordered some local sake for celebration, the taste was okay, i am not a big fan of sake but it’s definitely not bad. food arrived promptly, and there’s so much until our table is full. we had nodoguro sashimi, grilled baigai, baigai sashimi, kobako crab, squid sashimi, squid tempura, grilled squid, nodoguro miso soup and rice. there’s even two type of soy sauce which taste slightly different and brings out different flavors from each seafood. the whole meal was a great experience, definitely the best and the seafood were so fresh and so yummy. i love how the natural taste is preserved with simple cooking style. i enjoyed spending time discovering new seafood and talking to friends and the food is yummylicious.
after such a satisfying meal, we decided to take a short walk along the coast and head to the convenient store at the service station to pick up some snacks for our drinking and chatting session. the convenient store is big and there’s also a souvenir store attached to the service station which sells a lot of local delicacies and snacks. shopping for snacks is always fun and interesting, especially when everything looks good.
we then head back to the hotel by taxi and time for some relaxation! we went to the indoor onsen for a dip, felt so good in the hot mineral water, it just relives all the tiredness and soreness and i always felt refreshed and calm after going to onsen. at our room, we enjoyed all the snacks we bought with some homemade yumeshu from my lovely friend again, the best yumeshu ever, made with love. =) glad to be able to chit chat all night long, ehehe... i really missed the time we spent together, trying new snacks, talking about random stuff and just being close to each other.
such a wonderful first day with many new experiences, i went to bed and had a good rest, really love sleeping in futon during cold weather, the futon just traps all the body heat and it felt so comfortable and cozy.
