Bordertown
Russian shopping tourists are now coming by the busload to a border town in Finland, waiting weeks to make the trip: “It’s about time” The effects of the border’s [re]opening are already visible in Lappeenranta. The number of Russians is nowhere near the record years, but they seem to have purchasing power. Russian shopping tourists returned to Lappeenranta shops. A Sovavto bus from Russia…

Tabloid Ilta-Sanomat broke the news on Thursday evening that the Finnish government has set some legislative wheels in motion on a "drastic" new border law.
The newspaper reports that Interior Minister Mari Rantanen (Finns) has tasked a working group with drafting a new law under the headline 'Countering the Instrumentalization of Immigration and Strengthening Border Security'.
Although the exact details of the draft bill are still to be hammered out, IS quotes a 'key source' as saying that, if passed into law, the measure could see asylum seekers refused entry into Finland at the border checkpoint and ordered to return to Russia.
"It is quite clear that we are now talking about things that are in very strong conflict with the international agreements to which Finland is committed," the source tells IS.
Rantanen has set the working group a deadline of March to present the draft bill, with IS further noting that the government plans to keep the border with Russia closed beyond the current deadline of April.
"We don't sell to Romani people"
Helsingin Sanomat reports on an incident of suspected discrimination at a K-Market store in Kontiolahti, a small town in the east of Finland.
Tamara Nyman, a member of Finland's Roma community, tried to buy an energy drink, but was prevented from doing so by a cashier at the store.
In a video of the incident, the worker can be heard telling Nyman that the retailer has a policy of not selling to Romani people, adding that she has been "told this before".
"It was shocking and really humiliating," Nyman told HS.
A spokesperson for the nationwide chain of K-Market outlets, owned by the retail giant Kesko, said that the group is taking the incident seriously and does not accept discrimination in any form.
"We don't have a full picture of what happened yet, because the matter is still being investigated," Teemu Naumanen said.
Flood warning
Iltalehti writes that there is a flood warning in place in three regions of southern and southeastern Finland.
The combination of heavy rain and melting snow can lead to flash floods in some areas, IL notes, especially if drains become clogged.
There is also a warning for pedestrians in southern and central parts of the country: pavements on Friday will be very slippery because of the water on ice covered surfaces.
The outlook for Friday suggests rain showers for the south and west, while sleet and snow is set to fall in the east and north. Temperatures across the country during the day will hover around zero degrees Celsius, according to IL.

9 - 18 - 26 - 29 - 41 - 48
9. Where do you shop?- Depends what I want to buy, obviously! For food/groceries I usually prefer the two big Finnish chains (I like the S Group better than Kesko (sorry non-Finns, you have no idea what I’m talking about)). As for other stuff, I usually just try to find the best deal price/quality wise. My sports clothing I get from a charity shop because have you seen how much a top or leggings cost in a sports store.
18. Favorite tv show?- My all time favourites will forever be Friends and Merlin. Out of on-going shows I quite like Victoria.
26. How many pillows do you sleep with?- Just one is enough, usually. Depends on how thick it is though.
29.  What’s the worst thing you have ever done?- Letting my (so-called) friend (and pretty much everyone) bully a boy in our class in junior high/secondary school. I didn’t contribute to the actual bullying but I didn’t do anything to stop it either. One particular moment always comes to my mind; I don’t know why I remember this, but once in chemistry class the boy was sitting in front of my friend (who was sitting next to me) and she was throwing tiny pieces of eraser on the boy. I just stared at her dumbfounded because I couldn’t fucking believe she doing that, I mean, we were 15! And I was thinking to myself: Do you think that’s very mature? but I never said anything out loud. I should’ve, because the poor boy had no friends and the last years of basis school were probably hell for him. Me speaking out would not have stopped the bullying, but maybe hearing someone defending him once in a blue moon would’ve meant the world to him. (Perhaps the reason I remember this is because the bullying towards him was rarely this physical, that I know of, but more of the “passive” kind, leaving him out of activities etc.)
41. Top 10 favorite songs- Ah, shit. I know I say I love making lists but this is the one list that is pretty much impossible for me to make. I’m just gonna go with my top 10 faves right now. 1. Tror Du Att Han Bryr Sig -  Benjamin Ingrosso ft. Felix Sandman (I’m obsessed with this song rn)2. Better With You - Jesse McCartney3. Kämpersvik - Mange Olsson4. Noche Sin Día - Il Volo feat. Gente de Zona5. Min Tur - JVN6. Non mi avete fatto niente - Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro7. Svart Bil - Twenty One Two (I’ve had this on reply since November probably)8. Youngblood - 5 Seconds of Summer9. La Cintura - Alvaro Soler10. Svalkar vinden - Den svenska björnstammen
48. Who is your role model?- Ooh. My parents I guess? idk
This took forever and it was surprisingly emotional but I asked for it so thank

A Runaway’s Tale chapter 1
Chapter 1. The plane that was destined to go to Hong Kong was was nearly in the air. Jotaro and the others had seen Anne off, though Jotaro didn't show up until she was on the plane. The young runaway was so happy when she saw him. She looked back at him, planning to do so until the plane was out of sight. The plane flew into the air. Anne was still feeling very happy that Jotaro had came to see the plane depart. It went farther and farther away, Team Joestar was soon out of sight. The girl sat back in her seat as she stopped looking out the window. She remembers how of the team, Joseph and Jotaro had sorta been the nicest to her. Joseph was a grandfather who she had never really had. She'd never forget how good he was to her. Anne respected him and Jotaro on whom she had a crush. She had almost feared she wouldn't get to see him that one final time. She was thinking about her time with the team. Even though it may not have been mutual, she had liked being with them. She's feeling sad that she will most likely not see them again. She was grateful that they had given her money and tickets. What she would do when she is in Hong Kong is not planned out yet. The girl would have to cross that bridge when she gets there. She sorta knew the time length of a trip from India to Hong Kong. Plenty of time for the child to be able to leave herself to her thoughts. Anne sighed thinking to herself "I.. guess I wasn't able to do much to help them in their travels... I guess I was more a hindrance then a help.." She thinks back to the times where she burdened the others. One such moment was the situation with Z.Z., Anne then opens her eyes having closed them in thought. Anne says "Jotaro was right. It's better this way. He and the guys have their own journey. I am afraid that I will only get in the way." She remembers the reason why she left. It's her father he and pretty much always was a very distant man. Though him becoming distant really only happened after her mother left. Anne wondered if the team would've let her stay with them if she filled them in on some details, like why she ran away. Perhaps they would've or maybe not. It no longer mattered now. Her mind drifted back to her father, It was likely that he would not even be at the airport, heck she wondered if he even cared that she was gone. Did he even notice? She sighs "My father... He probably couldn't care less..." She looks down at her lap with a frown as the plane is flying. The young runaway felt happy that there were very few passengers here. She hoped to avoid drawing attention to herself. No one else on the plane is paying her mind, nor she them. Anne didn't mind that as she can keep to her own thoughts this way. She preferred this privacy. She has her hand on her hat that is on her lap. The plane continued on its way to Hong Kong. As time kept on passing, Anne laid back and put her cap on her head. She startled to close her eyes as she then started to fall asleep. Hours had passed upon hours. The plane soon has reached its destination entering Hong Kong airspace. Anne was working up by the pilot's voice over intercom. "We are now entering Hong Kong airspace. We shall be arriving at the airport shortly." The voice says. Anne sits up as she stretches her body, she also yawns as well. She waits for the plane to land. The plane lands down the runway at the airport. Anne feels the plane land. After the pilot tells everyone they can get up, the stewardess helps everyone to leave. Anne's the last one to go. She had no one to really look forward to seeing. Whether her father was there or not, most likely not as there was no way he was even contacted. Anne sighs as the stewardess walks to her. She says "Excuse me, young lady?" Anne snaps out of her thoughts, looking at the Stewardess after lifting the lid of her cap "Hmm?" "The other passengers have left. We need you to leave please." She says politely smiling. "Oh ok. Sorry about that. I got distracted." Anne says. "Would you like me to assist you?" The girl shakes her head "No thank you. I can do it myself." Anne then gets up, she makes her way out of the plane. It was darker outside as she went down the steps. The girl went inside the airport. She looks around at the people who are walking around. Some people notice her, they say nothing though. Anne just decides to walk around, working on a plan for herself. "I'll be alright a beautiful lady like me can always do anything she puts her mind to." She thinks to herself, smiling proudly. People are talking to each other. Families are hugging arrivals who they were waiting for. Anne watched some of these reunions, frowning and wiping away any tears that may form. She soon finds a group of unoccupied seats after walking around. She started to think about what she can do, she still has the money she was given. She didn't know what to do with it though. "Maybe I could use some of it to get myself something to eat." Anne said aloud to herself. Nothing else coming to mind, she gets up. The girl walks around keeping on the look out for a restaurant or something. She had her hands in her pockets. Elsewhere, on another flight that had just landed a boy is sitting a bored look in his face. He had just came back from a exhaustingly annoying excursion in Paris. He sighs, he left the plane with the other passengers when it lands. He politely declined the stewardess offer to help him exit the plane. He walks with a limp, using his cane with a gold handle. He is a boy around Anne's age with black hair and blue eyes, he's wearing a blue blazer that's buttoned and is wearing a white collared shirt underneath, black pants with a black belt and silver buckle underneath the jacket and black shoes with grey socks. He gets into the airport and says "At least now I'm back home in Hong Kong." He decides that he should make his way down to the baggage claim area. He looks around the place as he feels glad to be back, he'd see his aunt and uncle soon. He can't wait to get "that" period of time out of his mind. He was also kinda feeling hungry himself a little bit He says to himself "I wonder where William is?" As he walks towards a cafe he's familiar with, he catches sight of Anne from behind. He wonders if she's with anyone. The boy knows from experiences in his past that no child can really be too safe anywhere. He moves as quick as he can with his limp and cane. Anne hears the sound of the cane but doesn't look. She kinda thinks it may be an older man or something, Anne has a feeling he may be trying to get to her. He keeps coming. She turns around to see him, looking ready to defend herself but sees that it is not some older man but a boy around her age she lets her guard down. The boy stops as she looks at him and he looks at her. She seems kinda pretty to him as he sees her, the runaway girl thinks he looks good too, the boy feels like me made a bad first impression. He bows to her in apology "I'm sorry if I startled you or something Miss. I suppose I was just trying to help you, as well.. No place is too safe.." Anne goes over to him and says "No, no it's ok.. I guess I just thought you were like some older man because of that cane or something." The boy notices his cane and he just laughs it off when she says that and smiles "Hehehe. Yeah I guess. Anyway I suppose it's time that I introduce myself. My name is Jou Keskoe. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Anne smiles at him and thinks he has a nice smile "Hello there my name is Anne. I'm pleased to meet ya too Jou." Jou smiles as he says to her "Are you hungry?" "You bet I am." "Maybe you and I can go to that cafe you were headed to. I happen to like it myself." Jou smiles. Anne says "That sounds cool. I hope that I will be able to pay for us both then." "Don't worry I can pay I have a good amount of money on me." Anne smiles but she wouldn't feel right letting him pay for her. She says to him "Thank you but I'll pay for us both. We just met and I don't want to take advantage of you like that." Jou says "You don't have to worry about that. I'd be happy to pay." Anne thinks for a second and says "How about we both pay together. Split the bill between us." "I'd like that. Thank you." Jou replies. "Don't mention it. That's what friends are for." Anne smiles at him. Jou smiles and nods as Anne holds his hand as they go to the cafe together. Jou himself was kinda surprised that she had offered to pay for the both of them. A lot of his "lady friends" who he had to meet often just expected for him to pay, and they were on similar or slightly higher social standings as he. There's something interesting about Anne he thought to himself. She had thought Jou was pretty interesting too, for some reason she felt very glad that she met the guy. Her first day back in Hong Kong and she had gotten herself a new friend. That's the end of Chapter 1. Please R&R.

Campaigning is in full swing in Finland's parliamentary election, and this time round there are some extremist groupings trying to get elected.
Helsingin Sanomat reports (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on Tuesday that one of them, the far-right blue and black movement, has been banned from Kesko outlets across the country. The paper asked Kesko after it was informed of the ban by Kuppitaa Citymarket in Turku.
The retail giant says it tries to treat all parties equally when they're out campaigning, but it has guidance on corporate responsibility, respecting diversity and advancing equality.
"On that basis we have made a decision that we cannot give permission for the blue and black movement to campaign, as their goals are at odds with the previously-mentioned guidance," said Laura Rissanen, Kesko's regional manager.
"The party has announced that among other goals it is aiming to achieve an ethnically homogenous Finland and the party describes itself as a "white racial identity" movement."
The blue and black movement was formed by individuals expelled from the Finns Party, and describes itself as a "radical and ethnofuturist" organisation. Its colours are taken from the Lapua Movement of the 1930s, a fascist formation that attempted a coup d'etat in 1932.
Vantaa imports garbage from Italy
The energy crunch this winter saw many organisations scrambling to replace fuel they had previously sourced from Russia, before Moscow's attempt at subjugating and occupying Ukraine forced an end to most trade between Finland and its eastern neighbour.
That meant supplies of wood and other biomass to burn in district heating plants ran short, and many companies began to burn household waste instead.
Those incinerators that had always burned waste, like Vantaa's, suddenly found supplies were short and they needed to look further afield. Ilta-Sanomat reports (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that in Vantaa's case, that meant importing waste all the way from Italy.
Vantaan Energia's Kalle Patomeri told Ilta-Sanomat that the other options were unpalatable.
"The alternative would have been burning fossil fuels, such as coal, peat or oil," said Patomeri.
This year Vantaa is purchasing some hundred thousand tonnes of Italian rubbish, and will continue the orders for some years to come — although the amount will change depending on the market situation.
Snowy start to the week
This week southern Finland has had a cruel reminder that winter lasts a long time at these latitudes.
Monday saw a hefty dump of snow across the region, handily timed to follow the introduction of summer time. That is set to continue on Tuesday.
Aamulehti reported (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on a road traffic accident in Pirkkala on Tuesday morning, and warned people in the Tampere region that driving conditions were set to deteriorate over the course of the day.
The worst of the weather is set to blow into the east and the north, according to Maaseudun Tulevaisuus (siirryt toiseen palveluun). But with the weather in Finland, it is wise to expect the unexpected.

What did you spend on cheese this year? Shoppers get to see their own buying data
Lots of retailers use big data to build relationships with customers. But Finnish retail giant S-Group has taken things a step further by giving individual shoppers access to detailed information on their own buying habits.
Featured stories
Rather than just profile and then target customers with specific online and in-store promotions, S-Group has adopted a more open approach and created a platform for customers to access and analyze their personal purchase histories.
Called Omatostot, or My Shopping, the online service is accessible to any of the 80 percent of Finnish households that hold a loyalty card with the retailer.
Instead of merely providing a record of virtual receipts, Omatostot organizes past purchases across hundreds of product categories, allowing the curious consumer to see, for example, how much he or she spends on cheese, vegetables or even protein shakes.
In its first week of operation this month, Omatostot has already been used by almost 40,000 customers. According to Pekka Malmirae, chief customer officer of SOK Media, the corporate arm of S-Group, that’s more interest than many of S-Group’s other digital services have garnered in their first year.
SEE: Special report: Data, AI, IoT: The future of retail (free PDF)
Such engagement shows the appeal of big data when it is presented to consumers in a flexible and easily digestible form. It allows some shoppers to reduce their weekly expenditure, others to eat more healthily, and still others to cut back on food waste, Malmirae tells ZDNet
But he acknowledges that the service benefits the company as well as the shopper.
“By committing to open data, we want to build transparency and trust between us and our customers, and dispel the mystery attached to it,” he says.
Malmirae also sees Omatostot as offering a competitive advantage in an increasingly international marketplace, since it encourages customers to concentrate their shopping in S-Group’s stores to get a more comprehensive record of their consumption habits.
While Omatostot may be innovative, its current success and future potential come down to two factors. The first is the oligopolistic nature of the Finnish grocery market: in a population of 5.54 million, S-Group and its main rival Kesko have, respectively, 3.7 and 3.6 million loyalty cards, so there’s an enormous potential user base for the service.
The second factor is the cooperative business model of S-Group. Every loyalty-card holder is a member of the co-op and receives a certain percentage of money back according to how much they spend. S-Group’s commitment to open data reflects its cooperative ethos, allowing all members to tailor Omatostot to their own priorities.
In fact, the idea for the service has its roots in the MyData community, a loose global collective advocating increased transparency in how people’s data is collected and used.
According to Kai Kuikkaniemi, a core member of MyData and development manager of SOK, Omatostot aligns with the objectives of the community, with S-Group having been involved with the Finnish arm of MyData from the very beginning.
There are plans to develop and personalize Omatostot further over the coming months, such as by allowing individuals to set consumption targets for themselves and their families.
For now, though, with the backing of interest groups and the approval of customers, Omatostot appears to be a positive example of how a retailer can build consumer confidence in a digitalized marketplace where opaqueness often provokes suspicion.
